motorcycles and transporting tools and work gear to site.
Any of you ride a motorcycle to your work sites? how do you manage carrying any tools you have?
Im a framer and I'd have to carry a Nail gun, Air hose and powersaw once a week on my mode of transportation, along with my regular handtools, toolbelt, rain gear, lunch.
would it be feasible?
longest commutes ive had for work are around 30-45 min one way mixed between highway and city. our speed limit is 90km/h roughly 50ish mph?
We do have a C-can on all of our sites so I know I can leave my toolbelt and powertools in there for most of the week. but I do rotate between sites once a week or every other week which would necessitate bringing the heavy tools along back home.
thanks for any help.

How to Install an EFI-Ready Mustang Fuel Tank Into A Custom Hot Rod Trunk
Old gas tanks are full of surprises, and those surprises are usually in the form of dirt and wasp nests . That was certainly the case with the tank of our 1941 Lincoln Continental project, despite the fuel-turned-turpentine that had been sitting in it since the mid-1950s. After cutting away the rusted straps that held the tank to the frame, there was no question it was destined for the scrap pile, as it weighed more than 50 pounds. We never planned on reusing it, but that certainly sealed its fate. Instead, we opted to go a more traditional route by installing an early Mustang fuel tank, which has been used in many Kustoms and traditional hot rods for decades.
The reason these tanks are so popular is because of their original application, which is a drop-in style through the trunk floor. Not only does this simplify the conversion, but it also eliminates several key aspects of building a custom car, such as gas-tank repairs, fuel-cell mounts, tank straps, etc. These tanks are available as brand-new reproductions, which means that they are ready to go right out of the box. However, Holley’s Sniper fuel tanks come with a built-in high-pressure in-tank fuel pump, which is perfect for modern EFI systems. The engine in the Lincoln is fuel-injected, so the pump was required, but now the installation is that much easier because all we have to do is run a couple of fuel lines and a power wire for the pump. Done and done.
The installation of the tank required cutting up the floor of the trunk. As with many projects, this was already on the table, because the original floor had not only been cut for access to the fuel-sending unit, but it had also been covered in 3 inches of roofing tar, which was the late-1940s style of sound-deadening. That meant the floor was completely rotten. The original fit and finish of these cars causes severe rot from all the debris and moisture that gets in. There were full, 1-inch gaps between the trunk floor and the vertical walls of the trunk; no wonder they used so much tar and newspaper.
The floor is an odd shape, so we built a framework for the new tank to sit square and flush and then rebuilt the rusted floor around the tank. We cut out the old floor, exposing the original crossmembers that the tank was strapped to. This was our new foundation to build from. We used some strips of 16-gauge sheetmetal and a Woodward Fab sheetmetal brake to form a Z-shaped riser for the tank. The tank will sit inside the center of the riser frame, which will be lined with rivnuts (riveted, threaded inserts), making install and removal a one-person job. The rest of the process involves building a floor around the frame, which can be done a couple of different ways.
The floor skin itself is made from 18-gauge sheet—strong enough to support just about anything you would need to put in the trunk, while also being workable by hand. We roughed out the shape with a plasma torch, then used a few different techniques for bending the metal. Most of this job can be done with handtools, with the exception of the main tank riser, which requires a brake of some kind, as well as a shrinker/stretcher tool to get the curves of the trunk pan just right. You can always make a template for the riser and have it bent at your local sheetmetal supply shop for a few bucks. The shrinker/stretcher could be replaced with some extra cuts and welds, but if you are going to do any sheetmetal work, you should consider picking up a set.
The plumbing for the tank is straightforward, requiring either 3/8-inch hose barbs or, as we used, -6 AN-style fittings for a leak-proof seal. The fuel lines are now inside the vehicle, so we routed them quickly to the underside of the floorpans through a pair of -6 AN bulkhead fittings that we picked up from Summit Racing. The original filler neck ran through the driver-side rear fender, which we have welded up, so we fabricated a new filler neck using some exhaust tubing and a couple of fuel-neck couplers. The new filler neck is in the center of the Continental Kit–mounted rear spare tire.
We spent the better part of two days building the frame and filling in the floorpan. Using mostly handtools and some crafty ingenuity, the new floor looks good, has full functionality, and is a far better fit than the factory floorpans: no more 1-inch gaps!
The trunk was being sectioned, so while the top was removed, we installed the new tank. This can all be done with the body intact as well. First, the tank was located in the trunk and the perimeter marked with a marker.
The original trunk had been covered with roofing tar and burlap in the early 1950s, so the metal just rusted out from under it. We checked the frame clearance based on the marks, and there were no issues.
Next, we trimmed away the rusty, old floorpan with a plasma cutter.
The new tank frame began with a sheet of 16-gauge sheetmetal. We sheered it 9-inch- wide and marked the edges 1.5 inches on either side. This leaves a 6-inch total height.
Using our Woodward Fab sheetmetal brake, we made two brakes, the 1.5-inch flanges in opposing directions, to form a Z shape.
We made four pieces for the tank frame, top, bottom, and two sides.
Each section was clamped to the tank to assemble the frame for a perfect fit to the tank.
The sides were notched so that the frame would be smooth and without any overlapped edges.
The frame was then tack-welded together.
Before we finished welding the frame, it was placed into the trunk to check the fit. The frame was rested onto the front and rear trunk support crossmembers and then fully welded together.
The original floorpan did not fill the gap and was quite rusted. With the tank frame in place, we made a template from a poster board to get the right fit.
The template was placed onto a sheet of 18-gauge sheetmetal and traced out; we made a matching template for the passenger side as well.
The rear-most side of the trunk floor needed a flange, so we added a 1/2-inch-wide flange to the overall shape. The original template line will be the break point for the flange.
In order to help form the flange across the outside curve, we made some slices across the curve using our plasma cutter. This could also be done with a bandsaw, tin snips, or a cut-off wheel.
Because the flange is irregular in shape, using the brake wasn’t an option, so we used a pair of duck-bill pliers to make the first part of the brake.
Then we placed the panel on a flat surface and finished the brake with a body hammer. This is an easy way to bend metal into irregular shapes.
The rear floorpan section required a little bit of massaging for the right fit, which we handled with a shrinker/stretcher.
With the shaping finalized, the rear trunk section dropped right in and welded in place.
We installed the tank frame into the trunk and welded it to the front and rear crossmembers. Then we started on the filler panels for the floor.
The last step of the installation was welding in all of the filler floorpans using a stitch-weld technique in which a series of 1-inch welds are laid down with 3- to 4-inch gaps between each one until the entire seam is fully welded.
We dropped the tank back into the trunk and drilled the new frame to match the pre-dilled mounting holes in the tank.
After the trunk-sectioning was complete, we added a fuel-filler neck through the rear of the trunk. This will be trimmed down so that the filler cap sits in the center of the spare wheel in the Continental kit.

As a cover all cars mechanic sometimes you get to work on some of the more modern vehicles that are new enough to be great running vehicles but any type of warranty has long expired. The Highlander 3.5 Alternator looks daunting but in reality is just an exercise in time, Its pretty easy to change technically and only requires some basic handtools, Any slightly mechanical person can generally replace one in about 3 hours with a bit of patience.
Tools = drip pan, work light, 10mm 3/8 drive socket, 3/8 ratchet, deepwell 14mm socket, shallow 14mm socket, prybar, 12mm deepwell socket, 10mm wrench for battery terminal, variety of pliers for hose clamps, extra 10mm socket for the one you will drop and a tool to remove the belt (1/2 inch or 13mm long wrench will work…..maybe
)
Step one- make sure its actually broken- most battery tester units and or a multi meter can take care of this, there is information all over the internet so I don’t need to tell you how to get this done, Any parts store generally has the ability to test one for you in or out of the car.
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
2. Remove the serpentine belt, I used a 13mm wrench to manipulate the tentioner pully, you rotate it counter clockwise to loosen and remove the belt. turning the tentioner bolt clockwise will loosen the bolt and get you nowhere.
3. remove the plastic on top the engine and the plastic on top of the radiator.
4. take off the radiator hoses (if needed) and make sure to have a drain pan ready to catch the little bit that will come out. the top hose will need removed from the radiator so you can remove the fan assembly.
5. remove the air intake from the top of the radiator that connects to the air intake filter box
5. remove the 3 or 4 10mm bolts from the fan assembly and pull the fan assembly up and rotate it towards the drivers side to get it out of the way, If you don’t remove it there will be no room to take out the uninstalled alternator.
6. remove the alternator positive wire (10mm)
7. Remove the electrical connector from the alternator (squeeze it)
8. Take the 2 or 3 10mm bolts off the exhaust heat-shield and move it to the right (don’t break the o2 sensor wires)
9. Take out the mounting bolts for the Alternator (14mm)
10. Remove the 12 mm nut on the stud on the backside of the Alternator, There is a bracket that connects to the Alternator on the backside (that’s why you move the heat shield)
11. pry out the Alternator a little until you can get a 12 mm socket to that 90 degree bracket on the backside of the alternator and remove that bracket, It has a wire attached to it.
12. rejoice that you have won and pull the alternator out, replace it with a quality new or manufactured unit.
13. reverse process using expletives

Layers, texture, contrast, color and blooming are properties we consider when creating vertical gardens that are more than simply green walls. Vertical Garden Planters are none other than that, using lesser space to grow plants.

If you're going to spend money on a tool, I would buy a good level. It doesn't matter how good your craftsmanship is, if things are a little bit out of plumb everything is more difficult. When I started my apprenticeship, my boss had a rotary porter cable laser level that only really worked in darkness. We used to have to walk around with the remote and point laser exactly where we were working. I only owned a 4 foot level when I built my first deck and I used it in conjunction with a water level. Which is a glorified hose for you young guys. We got the job done but it took four times longer than it would have with the current tools I'm using. The right tool makes all the difference and efficiency is key in this business. You can still get the job done with lesser tools, it's just going take you a little bit longer. #Tools #PowerTools #Level #TheWorld #DewaltTough #Laser #LaserLevelHashtagsToVilla #2FootLevel #LevelingClips #Tile #Installation #TricksOfTheTrade #Tools #TheRightToolForTheJob #SometimesItsWorthSpendingTheMoney #hand tool #Handtools #Levels (at Mountain Lakes, New Jersey)

Fixing air hoses is a part of using them. These fittings are simple enough to teach the greenhorns to repair when they shoot them.
