I can feel the eyes upon me from the shadowed corners of my bedroom the spots where the lamp doesn’t touch Where nothing good ever stirs I can feel them watching me

The judgmental stares come with dark eyes so that I can’t tell exactly where they are My skin is crawling again and I’m wondering if I’ll ever get some sleep my nightly routine is talking myself down from the ledge again

Sometimes they jump from shadow to shadow and the movement catches the corner of my eye but by the time I turn to look they’re back in the safety of the gloom Sometimes I can hear them if the night is quiet a soft swoosh like laundry on the clothesline

I dream before my eyes ever close Living life like a waking nightmare One where my screaming goes unheard and I’m begging for someone, anyone, to answer back And all I hear is the echo

I don’t need drugs to hallucinate in fact, I take drugs so I don’t do that

OK, the heptalogy of trilogies is now plus one, with Defiance, and I remain amazed by Cherryh's (and Fancher's) ability to spend an entire book in the most in-one's-head rumination and drawing room exposition, and have it stay gripping, right into and out the other side of the exciting action, because the books are all about the talking and (over-)thinking. And the love and man'chi, of course.
