How to Build a Small Solar Power System - Low-tech Magazine
Readers have told me they like to build small-scale photovoltaic installations like those that power Low-tech Magazine’s website and office. However, they don’t know where to start and what components to buy. This guide brings all the information together: what you need, how to wire everything, what your design choices are, where to put solar panels, how to fix them in place (or not), how to split power and install measuring instruments. It deals with solar energy systems that charge batteries and simpler configurations that provide direct solar power. Conventional solar PV installations are installed on a rooftop or in a field. They convert the low voltage direct current (DC) power produced by solar panels into high voltage alternate (AC) power for use by main appliances and rely on the power grid during the night and in bad weather. None of this holds for the small-scale systems we build in this manual. They are completely independent of the power grid, run entirely on low voltage power, and are not powering a whole household or city but rather a room, a collection of devices, or a specific device. Small-scale solar is decentralized power production taken to its extremes. Most of the work in building a small-scale solar system is deciding the size of the components and the building of the supporting structure for the solar panel. Wiring is pretty straightforward unless you want a sophisticated control panel. You only need a limited set of tools: a wire stripper, some screwdrivers (including small ones), and a wood saw are the only essentials. A soldering iron, pliers, and a multimeter are handy, but you can do without them.

Howling Banshee (Prestige Class)
Tumblr media
(Howling Banshee by LordVishenka)
(This was by far the easiest aspect shrine to convert to PF1; they're defined as nimble terror troops that use 40k's ill-treated morale rules. Dexterity-based intimidate class. Done.)
Howling banshees are the other aspect shrine of the Asuryani focused on melee combat, along with the striking scorpions. In many ways they are opposites; where striking scorpions favor stealth and power, howling banshees storm into battle as a screaming wall of blades and noise. They are designed to terrify their enemies and strike hard and fast, crippling the foes of the Asuryani before they can even react.
Notably, gender in Asuryani society is fluid and tied to the role one is in rather than ascribed to some physical quality. All howling banshees are women; this is not because they only admit women, but because to be a howling banshee is to be a woman. Striking scorpions, similarly, all use he/him pronouns.
Role: Howling banshees are the terror troops and nimble warriors, capable of weaving through combat to spread fear and bloodshed. Alignment: Like most aspect shrines, howling banshees abhor chaos and so are rarely chaotic. HD: d10
Prerequisites
Race: Must have the Elf subtype Stats: Dex 15 Skills: Intimidate 5 Feats: Weapon Finesse, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Asuryani) Other: Must be inducted into a howling banshee shrine.
Skills
A howling banshee gets 2+Int mod skills per level. A howling banshee’s class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Climb (Str), Intimidate (Cha), Sense Motive (Wis), and Swim (Str)
Tumblr media
Weapon and Armor Proficiency
A howling banshee is proficient with light and medium armor.
Banshee Mask
A howling banshee is gifted a banshee mask, a grotesque tool of terror holy to the Asuryani. This weapon is specially crafted for her; all other creatures treat it as having the broken condition, and it If the weapon already has the broken condition, it does not work at all for anyone else trying to use it. This weapon can only be sold for scrap (it’s worth 4d10 gp when sold).
Banshee’s Wail (Ex)
When a howling banshee deals slashing damage with a melee weapon, she may make an intimidate check to demoralize her target as a free action. If she is successful, the target is shaken for a number of rounds equal to the damage dealt. If her attack was a critical hit, the target is additionally frightened for one round.
First to the Fight (Ex)
A howling banshee adds her charisma modifier to her Initiative, at a minimum of +0.
Intimidating Finesse (Ex)
At level 2, a howling banshee adds her dexterity modifier to her intimidate checks in addition to her charisma modifier. This bonus does not stack with the bonus granted by the feat Intimidating Prowess.
Backflip (Ex)
At level 2, a howling banshee is exceedingly nimble and agile. She ignores the penalty to jumping without a running start and halves the DC to make high jumps.
Graceful Avoidance (Ex)
Creatures with the shaken condition cannot make attacks of opportunity against howling banshees of level 3 or greater.
Piercing Strikes (Ex)
A level 4 howling banshee’s blows are perfectly timed to take advantage of the cowering of fearful enemies. When attacking a shaken enemy, she may apply her dexterity modifier to damage rolls when making a melee attack with light weapons and weapons with the finesse special quality. She also adds her dexterity bonus to trip, disarm, and reposition checks in addition to her strength bonus against such enemies. This bonus does not stack with the Agile Maneuvers. feat
Banshee Blade
At level 5, a howling banshee becomes an exarch, a respected and feared member of their aspect shrine who has lost herself to the craft and is gifted a +3 Thundering banshee blade. This weapon is specially crafted for her; all other creatures treat it as having the broken condition, and it If the weapon already has the broken condition, it does not work at all for anyone else trying to use it. This weapon can only be sold for scrap (it’s worth 4d10 gp when sold).
-
Banshee Mask Technological Item Price: 10,000gp Weight: 4lbs Slot: Head The wielder of this mask gains a +5 bonus to intimidate checks. Additionally, as a standard action the wielder may make an earsplitting shriek, dealing 5d6 sonic damage to one target within 60ft, will save for half. The save is equal to 8+the wielder’s ranks in Intimidate.
Banshee Blade Exotic Weapon Price: 100gp Type: Two-handed Melee Proficiency: Exotic Weapon (Asuryani) Damage: 1d8/1d10 Critical: x3 Range: Melee Type: S Weight: 6lbs Special: Finesse, Reach The banshee blade is an eldritch curved weapon that was designed specifically for the fighting style of the howling banshees. It is uniquely precise among polearms and incredibly difficult to find, granted only to the most powerful of Asuryani warriors.

Tesla’s Genius: Direct Current Without a Commutator!
Tumblr media
In 1888, Tesla made waves by patenting his alternating current (AC) system, which proved far superior to Thomas Edison’s direct current (DC) for long-distance power transmission. The real kicker? He did it without a commutator. This clunky mechanical device was used to reverse the current direction to make DC flow in one direction, but it was notoriously unreliable, prone to wear, and inefficient. Tesla sidestepped this by using high-frequency AC and a rotating magnetic field to generate a more reliable current without the mechanical hassle. After revolutionizing AC with his commutator-free approach, Nikola Tesla wasn’t ready to rest on his laurels. He turned his attention to a new challenge that many physicists of his day thought was impossible: creating direct current (DC) without using a commutator. As always, Tesla wasn’t concerned with traditional boundaries; he was determined to push the limits of what was thought possible.
Tesla’s Ingenious Method
In 1889, Tesla took things even further with a groundbreaking idea. He proposed a method to produce DC without using a commutator. He described how he “sifted” the alternating current into different branches of the circuit. Here’s how he did it:
1. Sifting the Current: Tesla used the concept of directing the AC waves so that the positive and negative halves of the wave were separated. He set up the circuit so that AC waves of one sign (positive or negative) would pass through one branch, while the waves of the opposite sign would go through another. This separation allowed him to create smooth, continuous DC from the AC input.
2. Electrical and Electromagnetic Methods: Tesla proposed two main methods for achieving this. One involved using electrical devices like batteries to create a counteracting electromotive force, which would oppose the AC waves and help separate them. The other method used electromagnetic fields to create active opposition within the circuit, guiding the AC waves into different branches.
3. Magnetic Method: Another method Tesla described used strong permanent magnets and soft iron or steel laminations. By carefully calculating the amount of magnetic metal, Tesla created a setup where the magnetic field interacted with the AC in such a way that allowed continuous currents to be extracted.
Historical Context
Here’s an important note: While Tesla did indeed demonstrate a method for converting AC to DC without a commutator, it’s crucial to understand the broader historical context. Rectification methods—both mechanical and electronic—developed independently over time and were not solely based on Tesla’s innovations. It wasn’t until more than a decade later that practical AC-to-DC conversion technologies, such as vacuum tubes and silicon diodes, became mainstream.
Tesla’s approach did, however, lay the groundwork for modern power electronics by eliminating the need for mechanical parts, making DC conversion more efficient and durable. The principles he introduced continue to influence technologies we use today, from phone chargers to large-scale industrial power systems.
So, the next time you plug in your phone or marvel at the sleek electronics in your home, remember that Tesla’s 1889 breakthrough was a significant step forward. It’s just another example of how Nikola Tesla was light-years ahead of his time!

MITEE Mouse II (1987) by Dave Otten, MIT. "The IEE World Micromouse Championship in London saw 13 micromice competing. The winner was Dave Otten who managed to win both first and second prize with Mitee Mouse I and Mitee Mouse II." – Micromouse History, UKMARS.
"Figures 1 and 2 show the basic chassis and drive components of MITEE Mouse II. One drive wheel is located on either side of the mouse near the center of mass, much like a wheel chair. Each wheel is mounted on the shaft of a DC motor along with an incremental encoder to sense position. Casters at the front and back of the mouse provide additional support. NiCd batteries mounted adjacent to the motors provide power for the mouse. A printed circuit board mounted above the chassis contains a microprocessor for control and two H-bridge switching converters to drive the DC motors. All control of the mouse is through the two drive wheels. The differential speed between the two wheels is used to steer the mouse, and changes in the common-mode component of the speed provides for forward acceleration and braking. Ultimately the position of each wheel determines the position and heading of the mouse in the maze. Fast, accurate, and stable control of each wheel is therefore a clear requisite of a high performance robot." – Feedback Controller Design for Servo Systems with Dominant Mechanical Resonances, by David M. Otten et al.

Can a halogen headlight be converted to LED?
Technically, yes, but there are some key issues with legality, safety, and performance. Here’s what you need to know:
🔧 How the conversion works Plug and Play (PnP) LED bulbs
Fit into halogen sockets (H1, H4, H7, 9005, etc.).
Built-in driver to convert 12V DC to LED voltage.
Example: “Halogen to LED” bulb kit.
⚠️ Key Disadvantages and Risks Issue Importance
🗲 Illegal in most areas Non-compliant LED bulbs in halogen housings scatter light excessively → glare other drivers. This violates DOT/FMVSS 108 (US) and ECE (Europe) standards. ☢ Poor beam pattern Halogen housings have reflectors designed to the shape/size of the halogen filament. No adjustable light pattern LEDs emit light differently → produce dark spots/scattering (“moth effect”). 🚨 Safety Hazard: Due to the uneven beam, your visibility is reduced and the risk of dazzling oncoming vehicles → accidents is increased. 🔌 CanBus Error: Modern cars detect low LED power draw as "bulb burnt out" and trigger a dashboard warning. Resistor may be required. 📛 Inspection Failure: Most states/provinces will fail your vehicle inspection for non-compliant lamps.
🔬 Technical Challenges Heat Dissipation: LEDs require heat sinks, which are too long/fans too large (may not fit in a sealed housing).
Bulb Orientation: LEDs require precise rotational alignment (many bulbs do not adjust well).
Vibration Damage: Improperly secured LEDs may fail prematurely.
✅ Safer, legal alternatives Solution Pros Cons
🔦 High-performance halogen lamps (Philips X-tremeVision, OSRAM Night Breaker) Legal, plug-and-play, 20-30% brighter, shorter life (400-600 hours) 💡 OEM LED/Projector lamp conversion Replaces complete headlight assembly → Legal, beam pattern optimized Expensive ($500-$2000+ per pair) ⚙️ Professional projector lamp conversion Custom HID/LED projector lamps installed into housing Expensive ($130-$800+), requires expertise
⚖️ Decision checklist
Before conversion: Check local laws (must be DOT/ECE compliant).
Ask your insurance company if conversion will affect insurance.
Test beam pattern: Install LED lamps in a dark garage - do not drive if beam cutoff is blurry or uneven.
Consider warranty - aftermarket LEDs may void your headlight warranty.
💎 KEY ADVICE
Avoid plug-and-play LED bulbs in halogen housings. Recommended choices: High-output halogens for economical performance.
Full factory LED assemblies for superior performance.
If pursuing a custom upgrade, have it professionally retrofitted.
🌟 Bottom line: While physically possible, inferior LED bulbs in halogen housings compromise safety and legality. Prioritize compliant solutions to avoid fines, incidents, or inspection failures. If you proceed, use only reputable brands (e.g. Philips, SNGL) with a proper fan/heatsink design and turn your headlights down to reduce glare.

Are solar power systems prone to cyberattacks?
“Like any technological revolution, digitalisation presents incredible opportunity, for example, energy system cost savings of €160 billion per year,”
“It also comes with new challenges, like cybersecurity. We didn’t need anti-virus protection for a typewriter - but we do need it for our laptops. As a responsible, forward-looking sector, we have mapped the cybersecurity challenge, and we’re rising to meet it with clear, comprehensive solutions.”
The report, written by risk management organisation DNV.
Europe’s move away from an energy system dependent on a few high-impact targets to a more decentralised system offers clear energy security benefits, the report states. Ukraine has learnt this in a particularly brutal way, following repeated cyberattacks on its power grid by Russia.
But to realise these benefits, cybersecurity laws, which focus on old, centralised infrastructure, need to be updated, the experts say. New legislation must address the specific security needs of distributed energy sources, like smaller rooftop solar installations.
Though on a much smaller scale than the strikes on other parts of the energy sector, the solar sector has faced attacks and interference, too.
In 2023, a group of Romanian solar customers modified mandatory inverter settings - which convert DC electricity generated by panels into the AC electricity used by homes - to disable the voltage-active power function.
This function is required by the grid operators to reduce active power at high grid voltage, in order to keep the power system running efficiently and safely.
Modifying this grid support function enabled the customers to make more money by not limiting their solar systems during high-voltage events, potentially jeopardising grid integrity as a result.
In a more pernicious incident, pro-Russian hacktivist group Just Evil stole credentials for 22 client sites in Lithuania and posted them on the Dark Web last year. This opened up access to the management portal of these solar sites, although access was not used to carry out further attacks on that occasion.
Analysing risk, the report found that these large utility-scale solar installations are more secure, since they are often managed by experienced utilities and covered by the EU’s Network and Information Security (NIS2) Directive.
Small-scale solar systems, meanwhile, which are often rooftop installations on people’s homes or businesses, lack strict cyber rules. They are connected to the clouds of manufacturers, installers, or service providers.
And while the impact of compromising a single installation is low, when grouped together for power system efficiency, they become virtual power plants of significant scale.

Hey Ariel. I just realized something. I don't think I've ever seen you share YOUR idea for your own X-Men series. The closest I've seen is your idea for an animated series on The New Mutants. Not sure if you have one, but if you do. What is it like? What will make it stand out from others?
I would like to give the X-Men a chance to explore their potential for the slice of life and comedy angles, with a touch of urban fantasy, light sci fi, romance and horror, and would call this encarnation The Magnificent X-Men, homaging the movies The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven, in an animesque style reminiscent of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, Nimona, Elemental, Entergalactic, the Spider-Verse movies and My Adventures with Superman, and a tone and narrative progression and tone similar to the DC Webtoon's Batman: Wayne Family Adventures and Vixen: NYC.
The timescale and timeline would avoid convolutedness by having characters who, in the comics, were originally clones or alternate timeline children to be children born in the main series timeline born and raised by previous characters that while mentioned as important, are not the main characters of the narrative, exploring the idea that as a group, the X-Men have a history that goes back to the 60s, where there were founding figures, partisan dissidences, characters went to college, graduated, retired from the battlefield to get married and raise children, or died while fighting for mutant rights.
The school setting would be upgraded from high school to University where people come not only to learn control of their powers, but also study and get grades to learn a trade to live.
Students come from a variety of backgrounds: there are not only mutants, but humans, aliens and robots.
The team line-up would combine Claremont and Davis Excalibur with Jason Aaron' Amazing X-Men: Nightcrawler would be the field team leader, and his teamates would be Cerise, Piotr Rasputin (Colossus), Illyana Rasputin (Magik), Rachel Grey Summers (Phoenix), Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), Hank McCoy (Beast) Ororo Munroe (Storm), Logan Howlett (Wolverine), Jean Paul Beaubier (Northstar), Angelica Jones (Firestar), Bobby Drake (Iceman), Brian Braddock (Captain Britain) and Meggan Pucceanu.
Jean Grey (the first Phoenix) and Scott Summers (Cyclops) are retired from superhero life and live in Canada, making grassroots activism work for the world wide progress of mutant rights, but come visit their former teamates and their daughter Rachel from time to time.
As the main settings, the X-Men and many mutants have relocated to South Africa and Australia, countries they constantly alternate between by crossing the Indian Ocean trough flight or sea, working both as University Teachers and Superheroes.
Embracing solarpunk, the protagonists would live simple functional lives in sync with the beauty of nature, in cozy enviroments with plants all over the place, presenting a commentary on how to grow a brighter future for everyone instead of submitting to gloom.
The architecture of their homes would be colorful, retro futuristic, standing side by side with ancient ruins, surrounded by nature without antagonizing it, but incorporating it as part of the city life, and airplanes and boats would be the main source of transport, rather than asfalted roads with fossil fueled cars and buses (think of Talespin's Cape Suzette).
The main historical mark of the universe is the Jaspers Warp, a conflict that was an important storyline from the Captain Britain comics, called A Crooked World, when the reality warping villain Mad Jim Jaspers crossed dimensions and converted England into a distopic society where anyone who was perceived as having superpowers was imprisoned in camps and civilians who tried to protect then were imprisoned and killed. In the comics, this was concentrated to England, but in the show, keeping relevant to recent events, it would involve both the whole UK and the United States that has a whole history of persecuting mutants and humans that dared to ally with mutants.
The older sibling of Brian Braddock, Jaime Braddock, was revealed to be a villain and mutant with similar reality warping powers, whose main flaw was egotism and selfshiness, so it would be fitting to combine Jaime Braddock and Mad Jim Jaspers into the leaders of the main antagonistic forces who the heroes had to defeat to work in building a better world.
And this would be the main setting and theme: reconstruction after surviving what was basically the end of an unfair world as we knew, and move on into something better, rather than go back to what was before.
Along with comedic supervillains that provide lighter conflict during the slice of life episodes, the main antagonists to bring stakes would be groups of people who are part of US political groups, the Purifiers and the Friends of Humanity, searching for a way to gain access to the remnants of world ending super weapons, like the infamous Fury created by Mad Jim Jaspers, and use them to rule the world.
They are the ones who never let go of the so called "glory days" when they had privileges and minorities "hadn't so many rights", and are so hung up on having a War to win that they’ll wreck the world all over again, which the X-Men have to fight so as not to stop progress and allow the people of Earth to move forward.
