the demon's been purged from the trash can but it turns out the trash can did not lure the ants inside; rather, they were already inside, and the trash can merely tricked them into foolishly betraying their position (establishing a forward base behind the dishwasher by to the trash can) before they could mount a full invasion.
my kitchen is now fucking spotless. their troops will starve.
however i'm still seeing an average of 3 ants per day running along the edges of the counter connected to the dishwasher, so today i broke out the chemical warfare:
nice-smelling essential oils.
did you know that salt deters ants from crossing an area? put salt along cracks in your home or put a salt barrier around a door and ants will be less likely to get in that way!
on a related note, my kitchen looks like i trapped a demon in my trash can and im trying to keep it contained

your legs quivered as theo positioned himself behind you, his cock sliding back into your cunt with a wet, satisfying sound that seemed to echo through the quiet mansion. "you like it like this, don't you?" theo murmured, his voice low and gravelly. "spread out for me like a fucking feast."
his words sent a thrill down your spine. the thought of someone walking by, catching a glimpse of your entwined bodies, was both terrifying and exhilarating. "what if someone sees us?" you panted, your voice barely a whisper.
"let them," he responded with a low chuckle, his teeth grazing your earlobe. "let them see how much you're mine."
his hands moved to wrap around your wrists, gently but firmly pulling them behind your back and pinning them there. the sudden restraint made your breath hitch, your eyes widening in surprise as you felt your body become even more exposed to the outside world. but instead of fear, you felt a thrilling sense of danger and excitement. theo's hips surged forward, filling you completely, and you bit your lip to stifle a moan.
his rhythm grew faster, his strokes deeper, each one hitting that perfect spot that made your toes curl. the coolness of the glass against your skin was a stark contrast to the heat of his body, making you feel alive in a way you never had before. your eyes squeezed shut as the sensations grew too intense, your breaths coming in short, sharp gasps.
his grip tightened on your wrists, the sound of skin slapping against skin becoming louder with each thrust. you could feel his muscles tensing, his body coiled like a spring ready to unleash its climax. the floorboards of the house squeaked as theo fucked into you in a steady, demanding rhythm that seemed to shake the very foundations of the mansion.
"look at you," he growled, his voice a dark caress that sent shivers down your spine. "so fucking eager for anyone to see you like this. such a little slut, taking it all for me." his words were like a match thrown into a pool of gasoline, igniting a fire within you that you didn't know could burn so brightly. you pushed back against him, urging him to go harder, faster, the thrill of his dirty talk spurring you on.
his breath was ragged in your ear, his tongue tracing the shell of it as he whispered, "you love being watched, don't you? you want them to see how much of a whore you are for me." the word 'whore' sent a bolt of electricity straight to your clit, making your pussy clench around him. you could feel yourself getting wetter, the slickness of your arousal making it easier for him to slide in and out.
you nodded, unable to form words, the admission spilling out of you in a silent scream. theo chuckled again, the vibration of it resonating through your body. "good girl," he murmured, his voice thick with lust. "now, come for me. come on, let go."
his hips hammered into you, the sound of your bodies colliding filling the room. the anticipation was almost too much to bear, the pressure in your core coiling tighter and tighter. and then, with a final, powerful thrust, it snapped. your orgasm crashed over you like a tidal wave, drowning out the world around you. your pussy spasmed around his cock, begging for more as you felt your juices dribble down your thighs.
theo's grip on your wrists tightened even further, his knuckles turning white as he held you in place. "that's it," he groaned, his voice strained with the effort of holding back his own climax. "just like that, baby. you're so fucking beautiful when you come."
you couldn't help but whimper, the sound muffled by the glass as another wave of pleasure rolled through you. his cock felt like it was hitting a spot deep within you that no one else had ever reached, and you felt yourself getting lost in the sensation. your eyes squeezed shut even tighter, your body trembling with the force of your release.
theo's strokes grew erratic, his breaths coming in harsh, staccato bursts. "fuck," he hissed, his movements becoming more frantic. you could feel the tension in his body, the way his muscles strained and tightened. "i'm going to cum," he warned, his voice barely above a whisper.
you nodded, your own breathing ragged and uneven. "cum inside me," you begged, the words slipping from your lips in a breathy moan. the idea of him marking you, claiming you in the most intimate way possible, sent a fresh wave of desire crashing through you.
his response was a feral growl, his hips bucking against you as he lost control. with one final, powerful thrust, he filled you with his warmth, his cum spilling into you as he reached his peak. the feeling of him pulsing inside you was almost too much to handle, sending another orgasm ripping through your body. you felt your walls clench around him, milking him for every last drop. as the intensity of your climaxes began to wane, the cold reality of what just happened seeped back in.

daydreaming about starting a life out in the woods with domestic abby ᡣ𐭩
Tumblr media
land. somewhere to put roots down. no watch shifts. no patrols. nothing we need to survive but each other. somewhere we can be soft and free, with room to breathe. trading one purpose for another. living off the land, still giving abby some sense of purpose and routine.
mountains, with trees so tall you can hear the wind move through them before it reaches you. private, surrounded by nature and wildlife, a view that stretches for miles. the worst part of our day is deciding what trail to hike.
a cabin nestled in pine trees, smoke curling from the chimney, under a starry sky. we’d build it ourselves. she’d do the heavy lifting, shouldering logs with practiced ease, tying beams into place while i hold the ladder steady. laser focused, sweating through her shirt, dirt on her arms, and look in her eye that says ‘i’m doing this for us.’
i’d chalk little heart shaped markings on the beams when abby isn’t looking. we’ll mark the wall with both our initials once it’s up. just scratched into the wood, tiny and permanent. i’d paint the front door. something warm. like amber. or rust. we’d have wide front steps, for when someone gets distracted looking at birds and trips like a golden retriever in combat boots.
she would insist on building us a porch, one that wraps around the house and has a swing. she’d build a greenhouse too, like her dad used to have so we could garden. herbs and vegetables, maybe strawberries. abby’d get really into composting.
there’d be big windows to let the light in, potted plants in the windowsill and small, smooth river stones abby had started collecting. books stacked on both sides of the bed. dog eared copies and little flowers pressed between the pages.
a clawfoot tub big enough for two, that we found at some salvage yard— partially collapsed, half swallowed by ivy. terrified it’d fall through the floor, but after we fix it up i’d take baths in it anyway. abby would sit on the floor and read to me while i soak.
we’d have cats, and a dog so big it looks like it could be part bear, probably named moose or something. drools on everything. we say we hate it but still sneak him food under the table.
a cozy reading corner with mismatched pillows. wind chimes in the doorway. a fire pit for stargazing nights, cool air and distant owl calls. hammocks tied between the trees, our favorite for afternoon naps. sun in our hair, the breeze rocking us to sleep. honey bees and butterflies fluttering through the wildflowers out back.
the kitchen would be the warmest place in the house, second only to our arms around each other. beautiful in the way worn pages of a favorite book are. open shelves lining the walls, uneven and mismatched, but sanded smooth by abby’s hands. a worn notebook full of meal notes, garden plans, and things we wanna try cooking next spring. a big wooden table we carved our initials into.
tons of small, weather worn ceramic mugs with hand painted designs for our coffee in the quiet mornings. lazy kisses as we listen to the forest come alive. the fireplace always flickering. our boots sit beside it in the evenings. sometimes we curl up with a book. sometimes abby sharpens her tools or sits behind me and brushes my hair.
maybe we’d find an old radio one day, that only gets static most of the time, but every now and then it catches a melody. old jazz, a scratchy folk song, and we’d dance barefoot on the wooden floor, laughing at how clumsy we are.
she’s the foundation; solid, protective, built to withstand anything. i’d be the warmth inside those walls, the glow that seeps into every crack, making even the coldest night feel safe.
abby’s always been willing to suffer, what she doesn’t always let herself imagine is joy. she deserves someone who shows her it’s okay to live a slower, intentional life and meets her in the middle. waking up and only needing to keep one person safe. choosing peace, instead of waiting for it to be stolen.

In that post about Joe Wright avoiding bonnets in p&p 2005 for being “too clichéd” (wtf), you said “and the disdain he clearly has for said author which manifests in various ways”. Could you elaborate on that? (asking only out of interest, not disagreement)
Absolutely (the post anon refers to) it's always a pleasure! Though I will say before starting, I'm not bashing 2005 for the sake of it and no one is "wrong" for enjoying it. For me, it's not about fan wars/arguing about which adaptation is best... I just really care about Pride and Prejudice as a novel and I get frustrated when the beautiful, timeless story is distorted!
My main problem with the 2005 adaptation is how much it misrepresents the characters and changes the speech from the snappy, witty dialogue that Jane Austen wrote into something entirely different. Not only do I believe that it does not need updating for C21st audiences (though it might sound a little strange to the modern ear at first, you quickly get used to it) but that dialogue is what really stood out to me and charmed me when I first read it and I don't care for it being rewritten into either something that is either worse than what is found in the novel, or entirely changes the characterisation.
The one that particularly irks me is Darcy's 'bewitched me body and soul' dialogue as, to me, book!Darcy's confession to Elizabeth of when he fell in love with her:
'I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.'
is so beautiful and romantic. Why change that? Additionally, this man is not awkward, he can make romantic speeches, he doesn't need to trip over telling her he loves her. And I've previously discussed here why I think Darcy saying he is bewitched by Elizabeth is out of character.
There are many such cases in the film, but that is amongst the worst to me, perhaps only alongside Darcy's first proposal and how much Lady Catherine's visit and confrontation was watered down (and why did it take place in the middle of the night???).
I suppose he didn't write the script so perhaps I cannot blame him entirely for that... but it goes beyond dialogue, to how the actors were directed and the contempt shown for the period it was set in, which is bizarre when making a period drama.
I think it's quite apparent that JW desperately wanted to make Pride and Prejudice into a Brontësque romance with sweeping landscapes and dramatic weather. I suppose you can argue he did that successfully, but it came entirely at the expense of it being the story that Jane Austen wrote. There are lighthearted, humorous moments too but very few of them feature dialogue actually written by Austen ('what excellent boiled potatoes' springs to mind).
He misunderstood and consequently misrepresented Elizabeth and Darcy's dynamic to the point that they are hardly recognisable to the characters Jane Austen created. 2005!Darcy is so painfully shy and pathetic, that when contrasted with such an impertinent and sarcastic Elizabeth, it just seems like she's bullying a smol bean who struggles in social situations. You cannot emphasise Elizabeth's sassiness while making Darcy such a pathetic specimen, it just doesn't work. She isn't the witty, charming character from the novel anymore.
The period inaccuracy is absolutely baffling in ways beyond costumes, beyond the lack of bonnets and that one scene where one of the sisters is having her corset tied so tightly. For me, the worst offences are:
The bleachers at the Meryton assembly. Not only wildly historically inaccurate but makes Elizabeth look like a gossip and an eavesdropper, rather than an innocent party insulted by a rich snob.
The pig running through Longbourn and generally everything about Longbourn itself. The Bennets are not on the same level of wealth as Darcy and Bingley but they are not some poor farmers, with a scruffy house. Elizabeth is very much of the same class as Darcy.
Chatsworth is absolutely, definitively NOT Pemberley. It is explicitly mentioned in the text as featuring in their tour of the Peaks so consequently it CANNOT be Pemberley. It's far too grand an estate for an untitled gentleman. Darcy is rich but Chatsworth is another level.
I care about this because the landscaping is not at all correct as it's very artificial, whereas Pemberley is renowned for its natural beauty. It might not seem like much but it really is a huge part of why Elizabeth fell for him!
Another reason Chatsworth shouldn't have been used is because Elizabeth seeing a portrait of Darcy and looking into his eyes rather than a bust with holes is crucial, as I explained here.
This is all disappointing but I do feel like I could get over it if the characterisation was adequate. Unfortunately, I barely recognise any of them.
Mr Bennet is not a cute fatherly figure. Him not accompanying them to the Meryton assembly is a plot point to underscore his bone idleness. Yes, his relationship with Elizabeth is very sweet and he loves her a lot... but that does not a good father make!
The total character assassination of Mr Bingley... who is not a clueless himbo. As if Jane Bennet would ever fall for a man like that, or Jane Austen would ever write a character like that (except to be the object of ridiculue).
I do not know in what universe Charlotte Lucas, the pragmatic voice of reason would say 'we are all fools in love.' And the 'I'm 27 years old' monologue is just not something I can ever picture her saying... she wasn't a frightened, timid little creature whatsoever.
Wickham isn't bad enough. What he did to Georgiana is blink and you'll miss it, and when he returns with Lydia, Elizabeth glares at him a bit and that's it? The elopement is also resolved very quickly, there is no real tension with it.
The key story beats are butchered too. Especially the letter, not just in how short it is but in the way Darcy hands it to Elizabeth. I think I remember reading something about how JW couldn't imagine how Darcy would be in the room with her, so he just made it like a dream sequence... aka he put his own creative desires over what's in the novel, when Darcy seeking Elizabeth out to hand it to her is very important. Not least, because it shows the length he's prepared to go to in order to set the record straight as it was breaking social convention for a man to write a letter like that to a woman he wasn't related to or engaged to.
That quote, among others, just shows he had a desire to do things differently and it seems to be because he thinks he can do it 'better.' It's bizarre because why bother adapting a classic which is anchored to its time when you blatantly have disdain for it? It's like doing a war film without army uniforms and guns.
Everything I've read from him, he just seems like a smug film bro that believes that he got it 'right' and people had been Missing The Point the entire until he came along. No, you weren't onto anything new. There are certain things, like bonnets, that tend to be in period dramas. And Jane Austen is very literal with her meanings, for the most part. There isn't a new way to interpret her works.
For a film entitled Pride and Prejudice there isn't a great deal of pride or prejudice... it's really just a poor shy boi, who stands there and fidgets with his gloves while not saying anything, and his girlboss, who uses towels that have been getting wet on the line outside to dry herself after coming in from a rainstorm.

Blue Collar Belly
Hey all! Sorry for being MIA for a bit, but I'm back and certainly haven't forgotten about any of you. I wrote this short story for a close friend, but I ended up wanting to post it here, too. As always, requests and asks are welcome! Enjoy~
Tumblr media
With the job of “safety-man,” Jacob didn’t have a lot to do, but that didn’t mean his task wasn’t important. Him and the crew had been working on this construction site amidst the breezy spring months, and the time was finally upon them where they could listen to the first notes of the cicadas buzzing in the outstretched hand of summer. As all of the guys shifted positions each day, Jacob was stuck with potentially the most boring of them all—holding the ladder steady while someone else did the foundations and construction part of the job.
The position wasn’t all bad, though, as Jacob was able to daydream in Wonderland whilst he coworkers did all of the hard, albeit interesting, work.It was about midday and his senior by about twelve years—John—was at the top of the ladder, working on some lighting issue in the house they were contracted in. As a fresh guy out of high school, the relaxed and carefree Jacob hadn’t been paying much attention to the task at hand, rather looking out a nearby window and thinking about an upcoming vacation he had with his family.
His mind had in fact drifted so far from the ladder that he didn’t notice his grip slowly lessen on the ladder. What’s worse, John started losing his balance without the stability Jacob provided. So, one thing led to another, and a tiny slip caused John to come crashing down—right on top of Jacob
The loud noise snapped Jacob back to attention; he looked up and opened his mouth to shout at John, when both guys went toppling onto the hardwood floor. Somewhat dazed, Jacob tried getting up, but the bulky weight of John prevented that. Then, another feeling clouded the forefront of his brain—something was in his mouth. As a blue-collar boy, Jacob had been raised to eat what was given to him, no matter the flavor. So, an involuntary reaction caused him to swallow hard. When the thing in his mouth wan’t all the way down his throat, Jacob swallowed again, feeling John shift slightly above him.
“Woah, woah! The fuck are you doin’, kid?” John tried to get up, but he seemed to be stopped by something.
Jacob wanted to speak, but the meaty flavor in his mouth was getting in the way, so his body started gulping faster, trying to devour whatever he had managed to fit in his maw so he could answer his superior. One final gulp sent the entirety of John’s hairy arm down his throat, and Jacob finally realized what he had been doing. Someway, somehow, Jacob had engulfed the entirety of John’s forearm and hefty bicep and shoulder into his mouth. What’s worse, he couldn’t stop himself. Be it his body’s involuntary reaction or the habits he had grown up with, Jacob’s lips stretched apart inhumanly far, allowing John’s head to fall into his gullet, caressed by his spongy and desperate tongue. Instinctually, Jacob put both hands on his coworker-turned-meal and began to push him deeper down his throat. For some reason, John tasted delicious, and he didn’t want to stop. His body’s urges took control, and he slurped down the senior’s shoulders and chest with alarming haste and frightening ease. Jacob felt his stomach slowly expand to encompass John’s arm into his stomach chamber, followed by his head and shoulders. He didn’t know how he was doing this, but he couldn’t stop himself even if he wanted to. His body gulped and slurped and swallowed and sucked without any of Jacob’s own input. John’s legs were slurped down like noodles, without any apparent difficulty on Jacob’s part. His belly, which had ripped his shirt open when he was at John’s waist, wobbled and made disgusting, grotesque gurgling noises as John settled inside his gut.
“Oh my—UUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPP—fuck. I’m—BBBBBWWWWAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPP—so sorry bro—sir! I don’t even,” Jacob marveled at what had just happened. He didn’t even think about doing…this. His body just swallowed his coworker for him, and what’s worse, it felt really good. Jacob rubbed a calloused hand over his spherical belly and felt it jostle with the living person trapped inside.
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
A neon green construction vest and orange hard hat ejected out of Jacob’s mouth like a canon. Where John was, he wouldn’t really be needing these any more. Gingerly, Jacob stood up (which was still quite difficult, as he had to carry around the extra weight of his coworker) and gingerly made his way over to the company truck, opting to take his lunch break, even though he had just had quite a big lunch. He wanted to apologize to John, but hey, now that John’s spot was open, Jacob might get a pretty nice promotion. Plus, Jacob was the youngest on the crew, so it was about time that someone threw him a bone—he just didn’t expect it to be a whole skeleton.
Inside the gurgling belly, John could faintly hear the unzipping of Jacob’s lunch box. How the hell could this kid think to eat at a time like this? He could already feel the digestive juices pouring into the stomach chamber, and his skin started tingling. Worse yet, his breathable oxygen was already faint with the worker’s immense and crass belches he let out. For Jacob to be enjoying his lunch like nothing ever happened felt like the ultimate insult. With what little strength John could muster, he began pounding at the fleshy walls of Jacob’s belly, trying fervently to escape.
“Easy now, big guy. UUUURRRPPPPP,” Jacob belched out the side of his mouth, leaking even more oxygen for John. “Look man, I was taught never to turn down a free meal, and it sucks, but that’s just the way life goes. Just let my belly take care of you, and I’ll handle the rest,” Jacob smirked before biting into a peanut butter jelly sandwich his mom had made him that morning. Something told him that this John wasn’t going to be the only guy squirming around in his belly that day.
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
P.S. if you made it this far--Freddie's Feat pt. 3 is going to be my next story, so keep your eyes peeled for that coming soon! ;)

dew during the warmth of spring
tim drake x gn!reader
summary: you wake up at the kent farm with a hangover. after stumbling into conners room, you find your friends. you snack on stale popcorn while having a needed conversation with tim, one where things finally change.
warning: mentions of puke. enjoy :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it was a warm spring.
dew was collecting on the grass beneath you. your eyes cracked open to the sight of a bright blue sky, fluffy white clouds scattered across the canvas. your head was pounding behind your eyes, making everything look brighter than it should. the heat of the rays of the sun spread over you like a blanket, offering warmth even with the coolness of the dewy grass soaking through your clothes.
you aren’t sure why you slept outside. this is awfully peaceful, especially for how you live. a faint taste of copper pushes through your mouth and invades your senses.
you elect to ignore it, rising and using your hands to prop yourself upright. this certainly wasn’t opal city. you swallow thickly, throat dry. something smells. turning your head, you can see the yellow liquid in the grass.
you must’ve gotten drunk. you recognized where you were by turning just slightly farther to see the building. the kent farm in smallville.
you stand to your feet and begin wobbling to the front door. you’re faintly aware that the tractor isn’t on like most mornings that you spend here. pa must not be awake yet. no issues, you know the little farmhouse like the back of your hand.
you carefully trot up the stairs, looking for conners room. the door was painted white, though the paint was chipping. there was a crack down the middle and the paint at the bottom of the door was missing, showing the brown wood underneath. even the wallpaper near the doorframe was yellowed and peeling.
you open the door and step inside, quietly shutting it behind you. you smile fondly at your friends. tim stole the bed, curled up on top of the quilt, facing the wall. the quilt looks similar to some of ma’s patchwork; you’ll have to ask about it later. cassie took the oversized beanbag in the corner of the room, legs stretched in front of her while her head dangles low, blonde hair hiding her face. conner is spread on the floor, the rug barely softening his body from the hardwood beneath.
you wonder where bart is, but you have a faint memory of the night before. you had called jay to come get him as cassie and conner were reaching for the alcohol that ma and pa like to keep hidden from everyone. bart was too young to drink, you all had decided.
now you’re wondering how you ended up outside if the others are up here. you jog your memory. you suddenly remember saying you needed to use the restroom. it’s downstairs, a few doors away from the kitchen. maybe you heard a noise outside and went to check it out and just got sleepy. or, the more likely answer, you threw up and got too lazy to come back inside, so you slept under the stars instead.
you spot a comically large bowl near cassies left leg. you walk closer, carefully treading across the floor. sometimes the floorboards of conners room  would creak when you walked, the foundation of the farmhouse not very stable. it was an old house, after all.
inside the bowl was stale popcorn. you remember that the four of you had planned to stay up late and chat, drink some more and really hang out for the first time in weeks. the popcorn had a tiny dent in it. maybe you going to the bathroom and never returning killed their mood and put them to sleep.
“oops,” you whisper into the silence of the room. nobody stirs.
you take the bowl and approach the bed. tim is far away from the edge that he won’t feel if you sit on it. the mattress dips under your weight as you lower yourself upon it, popping a piece of the stale popcorn into your mouth. it tastes like cardboard, but you can’t find yourself to care, not on an empty stomach.
you eat a few pieces before you feel movements behind you. turning your head, you hold a small smile. tim’s rolled onto his back now, staring at you through barely opened eyes. he groans, pale eyes fluttering shut all over again. you wonder what his light sensitivity is.
“stale popcorn?”
you offer the bowl, a teasing smile settling on your lips. his eyes open, testing the light once again. it’s clear his head is hurting him, though you know he’ll survive. you wonder how many migraines he’s gotten over the years.
“you disgust me.”
you huff in response. you were only being nice, after all. nonetheless, tim slowly sits up and scoots himself beside you. his thigh presses against yours, warm even through both of your guys’ pants. he cringes.
“you’re wet.”
he grabs a few pieces of popcorn from the bowl, testing out the first one. tastes like salty cardboard and scratches his throat as he swallows it practically whole. he deems it good enough and eats the rest he grabbed.
“i slept outside. the grass gets wet in the morning, though i suppose as a gothamite, you wouldn’t know that.”
he protests lightly, though the small smile that hints at his lips melt away all seriousness that they held. you fall into a comfortable silence, watching over your friends. cassies breaths kept blowing her hair away from her face, though the hair would fall back into place for her to blow away once again. conner has drool dripping from the corner of his mouth and down his jaw. he needs to shave. his stubble has spread from his jaw to his chin and upper lip.
slowly, you turn to tim. he’s polished off a few pieces of popcorn and is now rubbing at his temple. the lights must be worsening his headache. after a moment, he returns your gaze.
his eyes are soft, holding fondness and tiredness. he looks as if he could sleep for another few hours. his hair is falling into his face and framing his cheekbones. you loved the new look, longer hair that wisps around him and making him look more mature. he no longer looks like the fourteen year old that he was when the team started.
your fingers reach out to brush his hair away before you can really think about it. his lips part just so and suddenly they’re on yours within the blink of an eye. he’s so warm, his lips making your head feel fuzzy. tim’s lips are chapped and his breath smells like beer when he pulls back for a breath, but you can’t bring yourself to care.
you’d never quite thought of tim like this. well, that isn’t true. you knew he was pretty, prettier than many other people you’d met. he was also very intelligent, and the way he went on rambles had drawn you in from the start. his loser personality was the icing on the cake, though the casualness of him was the topping.
he was casual in the way he loved you. he held your hand sometimes, squeezed it in his own and smiled at you when you looked at him. he kissed your cheek sometimes, though it was always so fast you never really thought about it. you cuddled sometimes, but you did that with all of your teammates after a rough time. you didn’t think it was too special between the both of you, even if he would put his head on your chest to listen to your heartbeat in the night. not even if he would card his hand through your hair or if he would run a hand down your spine.
you’re thinking too much into this. maybe he’s still not completely sober. maybe he just wants some sensation after feeling so empty. that’s certainly how you feel right now; empty stomach,
empty heart, empty mind.
tim senses your unease like it’s his superpower. like reading you is all he has ever known to do.
“you alright?”
you gulp and shake your head. you don’t want to talk about it, and certainly not to him. maybe if you were drunk again. the thought certainly sounded appealing. though, you suppose all you can really do is kiss him again.
you lean in, lips brushing against him again, curious. almost shy. his arms find their way around your neck, his lips pressing harder against yours. you lean in and slowly wrap your arms around his torso, lips melding to his. his fingers play with the hair at the nape of your neck, teeth pulling at your lips. you grow lightheaded and pull away.
he breathes slowly through his nose, eyeing you through his long lashes. you lick your lips, blinking at him. this was agonizing, the silence between you. there was so much to say, though you couldn’t find the words you wished to use. a snore comes from the floor, sounding like the floorboards themselves.
you then sigh. why be a coward, anyways? you’re a superhero, you risk your life every other day. why is confessing your big fat crush on one of your best friends so hard?
you hype yourself up mentally as you lean in to press kisses at his cheek. one near his mouth, one under his eye, one over his cheekbone. tim melts under your touch. he finds himself enjoying this, leaning into you and smiling beside himself. you pull away for a moment, biting your lip, before deciding to utter the words that sit on your tongue.
“i really like you, tim. i have for a while. go out with me?”
—is what you would have said if you had the courage. instead, tim can see you crumbling mentally just by looking in your eyes. you need some assistance.
“wanna come play video games with me sometime, just the two of us? i just bought a new call of duty game.”
his nose presses to your cheek as he leans in. he nuzzles you, lightly rubbing his nose along your face for a moment before tilting his head to peck your cheekbone. you smile, fingers beginning to tap a rhythm into his back. it seems to soothe him as he melts further into you.
“sounds good.”
you murmured in response, having him smile in turn. you lean in to share another kiss, though the both of you jump as a groan sounds from the floor.
“i feel like i got hit by a truck.”
cassie. you and tim smile sheepishly at each other, carefully extracting yourselves from the other. you had forgotten your friends were here.

On magic as being a chore, and why I think that's fine and probably a helpful way to frame it for a lot of people who want to do practical sorcery
On the topic of wards, have you ever had to dig a drainage ditch so water won't accumulate around your house?
Or, put one of those little gates in a doorway so a new puppy can only stay in one area? Or, have you ever put out ant bait?
Hung up a "no solicitors" sign? Built a fence so the chickens can stay over there, and out of the garden? Built a shade cloth over the garden?
Because when you're building a shade cloth over the garden, you're casting a ward against the sun, right. You're binding the puppy and the chickens so they are constrained to certain areas. You're crafting a spirit trap to redirect the water so it won't harm your foundations. Casting a hex most vile upon the ants.
Etc.
But I really do think that in some conversations, wards and protections get framed in a weird Bonnie and Clyde way, where they're assumed to be only for witches living in the Wild West, having witch wars and doing Risky Magic.
I do enjoy the sinister mysticism that can sometimes surround witchcraft. But sorcerous strategy is a big interest of mine, and I think that a very useful way to arrive at useful strategy is to de-mystify the whole operation.
It's just that we've got these weird labels, like hex, bind, banish, ward, protect, conjure; but when you get down to it, you can just be doing the most mundane stuff with your magic.
I can use a shade cloth to ward the garden against the sun. Then, I can string garlic on a red thread to ward against illness.
I can put up a fence to keep the chickens on that side of the back yard, then hang up a magical no solicitors sign because I'm tired of getting knocks at my door.
This is what gets my goat, sometimes, about people saying magic has to feel all wonderful and beautiful and everything. Yes, I love the experience of being productive with a hammer on an early spring morning, but building a fence is tedious. When it comes down to it, it's still just building a fence. Even if I build it with wax and bits of paper instead of wood and nails.
I feel like there is so much magical housekeeping people could be doing, or would greatly benefit from, that people just don't do because it's wrapped up in these sinister-adjacent terms.
I don't think magic is actually hex/bind/banish/ward/protect/conjure. I really do think magic is a lot more like hammer and nails. Needle and thread. Oven and dough. Etc.
Is it a fast cash spell, or are you just going out to search for the eggs your prosperity hens have already laid?
You can have it either way you like; you can frame going out to get physical eggs from mundane hens as a rapid-manifest prosperity spell. Behold, after I cast a spell of going outside for two minutes, I have manifested five eggs, better than any store could provide.
But taking all the mystical stuff and letting it just be mending holes and baking bread and digging drainage ditches I think is helpful.
All in all, I think demystifying the language we couch practical sorcery in can have two helpful results, which are:
It's easier to let yourself do things you want to do, because while it's normal to say "There's no good reason for me to cast protections because there's no reason to think anything will come after me," it's also normal to say, "you know what would be a good investment for this property? A nice privacy fence, it would make entertaining feel more cozy and then we could start fostering puppies."
It's easier to compel yourself to do the things you need to do, because it stops being, "I really want to cast a prosperity spell but I just haven't been in a magical mood," and starts being, "it is my job to water the plants and if I don't they will wither and die. So I'll make myself a nice tea to bolster my resolve and get to it before work."
