Creative Practice- New Household Robot
Having never been happy with my initial Household Robot design, I decided to put together another one, based on my other idea to model it on an old iPod Design

The final result was a sequence as follows: 1) Intro shot 2) Zoom in on water tap; one pump/squirt 3) Zoom across to Soap dispenser, one pump/squirt 4) Zoom out back to front view 5) Robot Twists around 6) Zoom in on hand dryer 7) Zooms back and turns back to start part

Although I was much happier with how this looked, I am aware it’s purpose might not be decipherable to anyone other than myself. So I put this into Audition to add some sounds to hopefully add some clarity

Wednesday 30th November, Sound Design: Household Robot
I decided to revisit my household robot project. I had an idea to do it rostrum style with paper cut outs. Here’s how I got on.
First I was gonna need some materials.

for the background I created a house interior that had had a bit of a party the night before and for that I used acrylic paints. To create the robot I used metallic grey card, tissue paper and black card. I used My humble Huion HS611 tablet for the intro frames of animation.

This is the painted background. I don’t think it’s messy enough and I think I could have put more stuff on the wall to make it look less plain.

These are the assets that I ended up using. For the robot I made three different suction parts so I could animate the part where my robot sucks up the cup, which I also made multiple assets for. I ran into a bit of a problem, I didn’t take into account how the cup was gonna fit inside the robot. I made it the right size in respect to the other red solo cups but it was too big to fit in the robot so I had to reduce it’s size as it got sucked up. I think I got away with it because of squash and stretch  but it’s definitely something I’m going to think more carefully about in future.

I think, right off the bat, we should talk about the digital frames. It’s far too slow. I don’t like how slow the zoom in and zoom out is and it’s not smooth at all. The plus side is these parts aren’t the main focus.
I’m overall happy with the way the sound turned out. I think that the hoover sound is perhaps a little obnoxious and the snoring could be a little bit louder maybe but I think the sound all goes together quite well.
I chose the music I did because I wanted something light and funky I guess.

w/c 28th September- Creative Practice Household Robot

This week I brought my idea of a robot to life, after learning about CG rules with Controls etc. in session. The idea is that one tap will release soap for hands, the machine will turn around and spray water, then split in the middle for a jet o f hot air.

Although I am pleased to have a completed a sequence, I don’t think it has run very well, and it would be hard for an outside viewer to guess what it’s supposed to represent. Hopefully I will be able to make it clearer with future amendments and additional details (water, soap, sound)

Creative Practice w/c 24th September Household Robot
This is a two week challenge to create a new “Household Robot” consistent with the ethical concepts and questions posed by the unit.
This robot is to be designed as a kind of answer to particular ethical and moral considerations; e.g. ethical (racism, gender bias, homophobia), sustainability (materials and their effect on the environment) and global concerns (Coronavirus, global warming). For the CG project only Maya is to be used, and it is to have no texture. The character will be composed of two or three core shapes, and should not have any arms or legs. My design ideas included the following:

A machine to suck up kitty litter, and a robot to cancel out silence (uses arms, so not appropriate)

Devices, modelled on the iPod and round ball figures that will provide soap and water and dry hands. This is obviously inspired by the current pandemic, and this is the idea I will go with, as it is most appropriate to the subject matter and most appealing to me personally. Ultimately I have decided to go with the round figure as it is more appealing to me personally.

02/10/20 Tutorial Feedback
Storyboard- Clear camera Language and drawings, however feels a little awkward when Hogarth turns, there is a visual jolt, could be fixed by completing his turn before cutting to the next shot. Also framing feels a little off in ‘behind log’ shot- obviously space is needed below the log for Hogarth to jump onto, but use of space feels awkward. Timing is also obviously a bit slow,
I’m happy that my final board is clear & easy to follow as that was my main priority (& I think using grey tones and clear poses helped with this). I also agree that something feels off about the log shot & hadn’t realised this was due to Hogarth’s turn and my use of space. I think this could be fixed, as Helen said, by adding another frame of Hogarth completing his turn before cutting. Additionally, I could keep the camera slightly tracked in on Hogarth in the log shot, so the frame feels less cluttered, then follow him as he moves, tracking down when he jumps over the log. This way, we stay focused on Hogarth but only show parts of the setting where necessary. So, I may make these changes to perfect the animatic before hand-in, as well as timing the scene properly.
Household robot- Well finished, could be better if the Robot’s ‘body’ had more movement. Also, the bottle could be compressed more vertically (as much as it did horizontally).
After compressing the bottle horizontally, I found that when I tried to do the same vertically it just makes the bottle look like a complete, smaller version of itself. I could have really exaggerated the compression to fix this, however that made the bottle tiny and harder to follow through the rest of the chambers. So, I’m happy with the smaller vertical compression & I think it still looks effective enough for a showreel.
I had the idea to make the robot squash & stretch as its processing the bottle- maybe squeezing its eyes and compressing as it prints the dice or bouncing as it shuts its jaws. However whilst animating I found that I had so many layers and separate components to keep track of that adding movement to the body as well would have really complicated things. But reflecting on this now, I believe I could have done this after turning the animation into a finished composition- where everything is contained in one layer- I could have scaled everything together so they stay in the correct position. When I return to this to remove the bubble I may also experiment with scale to see if I can add a little more movement to the robot as a whole. Otherwise I’m completely satisfied with the final outcome.

Animating Household Robot
To begin animating my robot I imported each part I’d made in photoshop and put them in the correct layer order, then moved them into place. Immediately, I noticed an issue with how I had planned for the bottle to fall into the mouth. When drawing the main shell in Photoshop I made sure to keep the chamber windows transparent, as well as the mouth, so you’d be able to see the bottle as it passes through. However, the bottle also needed to pass over the top of the robot’s ‘head’, so I could neither place the bottle layer below or above the main body layer without something being obscured. To fix this, I went back to photoshop and made a copy of the main body, but cropped out the top of the ‘head’, then exported both sections separately, allowing me to place them on separate layers and have the bottle pass over one and under the other.

I then moved on to animating the bottle using the position tool as I had done in my previous experimentation. I also made it rotate slightly to make the falling action look more realistic, as well as bring it to a horizontal position that can easily be compressed by the crushers. Here is where I ran into my second problem. I had intentionally drawn the crushers longer as they need to extend into the robot, however when they aren’t placed together they stick out from behind the main body (the upper and lower crushers were exempt from this however as they were already hidden by the main body). I thought this could be fixed with masks, but I found that after making a mask I couldn’t change its position on the timeline (I hadn’t realised at the time I could have re-positioned the points of the mask using mask path). My solution for this, was following this tutorial and creating a solid to act as a mask- covering the areas I needed, then hiding it and changing the crushers’ Trkmat to Alpha inverted.

This proved to be very simple, so I repeated the process for other parts like the teeth and D20. I’m really happy I found this technique and it worked perfectly for what I was trying to achieve, however, this required adding many more layers to the project, cluttering the timeline and making it harder to navigate. So in the future, if I need to use AE again I will research masks further, so I know what can and can’t be achieved with them & making sure I don’t have to add extra layers when it is unnecessary.
As the bottle moves into the next chamber I had to decide how to depict it turning into liquid without creating a whole frame by frame animation. I solved this by making the whole chamber a solid colour and adding bubbles to make it look like it was already filled with liquid, then used the opacity tool to make it look at though the bottle dissolves into it. Though this isn’t as visually impactful as my first idea, this did allow me to play with particles in AE, which I’d never done before. I followed part of this tutorial and changed my own bubbles to have a much shorter longevity, so they would disappear before floating out of the chamber.

This was a little difficult to finesse- making sure the bubbles didn’t move too quickly or move out of the chamber area, but I’m pleased with how effective the result looks. However I probably should have used a mask to make sure the bubbles stayed in place, which would have been much simpler & quicker than finding the perfect longevity and birth rate. If I were to use AE again, particles are something I would love to explore further, as there were many options I didn’t experiment with yet.
For the final chamber, I used the rotation and position tool to swing the nozzle and make it move upwards, then, used the position tool to move the D20′s ‘solid’ mask upwards, revealing it as the nozzle moves. In doing so it looks like the nozzle is printing the dice out, as I had hoped for in my preliminary designs.

To finish, I used the speed graph to add ease in and ease out on every movement, as the animation looked quite stiff. Even though this is robotic in nature, doing this make each movement appear more fluid and pleasing to watch (& a little less artificial- suitable for the ‘not quite perfect’ look of my robot’s design).
Then as a final touch I added 2 dials, and with the wiggle expression, made them rotate erratically, to look as though the robot is processing & monitoring its progress. I think this adds a little comedic detail and makes the robot feel more ‘alive’.

Building my robot in Photoshop
Though building my robot using the shape or pen tool in After effects would produce quicker results, I prefer a more illustrative look, with visible imperfections and brushstrokes. Which is why I ultimately decided to draw my robot in Photoshop first, then import it into After effects.

For this to be able to animate, I firstly had to plan which parts of my robot needed to move, then proceeded to draw the completed design, making sure each moveable part was in a separate layer. I also had to make sure that the main shell or ‘body’ of the robot had transparent sections, so that it’s inner workings would be visible. Once I had done this, I exported each layer as a separate, transparent PNG and imported everything into After Effects.

Though this method of working was very time-consuming I’m pleased with my decision- the design looks a little more stylized and with more personality than the sterile shapes I created in my first attempt at using AE. Additionally I think the contrast of having a robot with slight imperfections, but using AE to animate it with perfect, smooth movements, could potentially be quite visually interesting. Furthermore, I was able to add more detail like shading on the body and numbers on the D20 that I don’t know how I’d replicate in AE.
To improve however, I think I could have pushed the illustrative look even further- maybe removed the outlines and really embraced the texture of the brushes I was using in Photoshop. Nevertheless, I’m pleased with the outcome and ready to move on to animating.

Friday 25th September-Friday 2nd October, Household robot
The house hold robot project has definitely been an interesting one. 
We were given the task to create a robot that would be used to solve a problem in the house. I let my idea influence the design I eventually ended up with. I had this idea that it would be a hoover type contraption that would be hoovering something and then it would sneeze and everything it had just hoovered would come back up. So keeping that in mind, I made a start.

I started with some design thumbnails and colour experimentations.

I decided to go with this for the final design (albeit temporarily) I just found that this deign had the most character. The nozzle Looked like a long nose and I liked the overall shape of the robot. 
When I started to animate however I just wasn’t feeling it so I went back and revisited the concept and had another think about the design. I looked on the internet as elephants sneezing as that’s how I imagined It would sneeze and I got inspired.

I think this design is far more successful than the previous as it has more personality and uniqueness than the earlier model and is also more environmentally friendly and compact. The idea is that they suck up the rubbish and then dispose of it by disintegrating the  rubbish before moving on. Because of this change to mechanism I had to change my idea slightly. Instead of having the robot sneeze up a whole load of hoover insides, I’m planning on making them hoover up a crumpled cup and then have then sneeze it out whole again. 
I didn’t get this far for the deadline on Friday but here’s what I was able to do.

I have a lot of issues with this. The main one being how messy it is and the fact that you can clearly see the robot getting bigger. This is mainly because I drew the frames in Firealpacca and didn’t turn on onion skin mode. I think the idea is there but the execution is lacking. Moving forward with this project I plan to completely remake it. I envision a 2D digital animation set out like an advertisement for the robot and then I want to go into a paper craft stop motion animation of the robot actually doing the task it’s designed for.

Household Robot - first animation
I used after effects to animate the pot on top tipping back and forth. I wanted to add a sense of weight and so when it tips back up it does an overshoot. I also animated some flashing buttons on the base and a slider that follows the movement of the watering can.

Household Robot - composition
This is the composition for my animation. I added two plants for the machine to water based on plants I have in my room (On the right a pepper plant and on the left a spider plant). I also added a shaddow and made the base of the robot more 3d by adding in the top because the perspective looked slightly strange. I wanted the background to look like a shelf or a windowsill where the plants might live.
