Jinu hated Sundays. 

Sunday was the one day of the week when most of the population made it comfortable at home, not putting a single foot outside. There was nothing wrong with it being Sunday itself. A few lone pedestrians stretched through the alleys of the metropolis, mostly nurses who had the bad luck of having to work on weekends and teen groups who used the calmness of the city to hang out undisturbed. 

Jinu hated Sundays more than anything.

They were quiet, forcing one to think about all the things that seemingly went wrong the past 6 days. He didn't want to think. A normal person would have used a free Sunday to meet up with their relatives, or spend a spa day in front of the TV. 

The deeper Jinu sank into his thoughts, the more dense and dark the clouds in the sky above him became. He wasn't human. He shouldn't think about whether it was worth getting up in the morning, if it was worth carrying on with the small flame of hope he managed to sustain all these centuries. 

Contrary to all religious and folklore beliefs, demons needed sleep. Jinu slept, but didn't dream. And he was glad. Because not even demons are immune to the ghosts of their past that haunt them. 

The road was clean, the puddles from last night's thunderstorm still deep in the ditch.  

He had swapped his usually colorful clothes for something dark. No colorful pants, no colorful shirt. It didn't seem right to him. He was lost in the small crowd of the city, blending in too well as if he were one of them. One of many aimless figures desperately seeking their meaning in life. 

Sunday was the day Jinu dreaded the most. Not just because it left him alone with his thoughts, but because of the people. Or rather the lack of them. 

Nobody went out on Sundays. Hardly anyone. Not even in this big city, where new gambling stores opened every day and small businesses had to close because the rents were too high. 

The people worked so much, that they spent the time they had left with their families. He wondered what it was like to come home to a warm meal, how it felt to spend time with people who expected nothing from you in return for their acceptance. He wanted to be accepted, deep down. But acceptance was a luxury. Tolerance was a prosperity that was easier to uphold, easier to manipulate. 

Sundays were the most unprofitable days for the soul hunters. Many stores closed on Sundays, almost no activity available for the lost souls of this city. 

And out in the vast emptiness of the city it was too dangerous to do what needed to be done.

Had the flour expired? The lettuce leaves looked strangely shriveled, didn't they? 

She had a feeling she would get fired soon because of the action with the cupcakes, but if not, her voluntary letter of resignation would be typed and sent away faster than she needed to get up in the morning. It was supposed to be a part-time job to finance her studies, a shitty minimum wage job as an untrained bakery employee. She had no idea how to even bake bread, because the last time she tried, she almost lost a tooth. 

But she knew how to get cinnamon buns out of the packaging, or how to make a sandwich with instructions. 

She loved Sundays. 

No one wanted to work on Sundays, which meant much-needed bonuses and an exceptionally quiet shift. Working in customer service was not for the light-hearted.

Yesterday, she tried a new hair styling cream that was supposed to have some kind of magical bonding system in it. Allegedly even Zoey from Huntix used it. Y/N was frustrated with her hair. Wearing it up every day for work and the heat from the dozen ovens didn’t help care for it. So she tried it out.

Only for her hair to end up in a low wispy bun this morning anyway. Work rules and such things. 

Y/N sighed. Luckily it was Sunday. That meant that after her shift ended, she could take home all the left over baked goods that didn’t sell that day. 

She wasn’t poor, she still had her parents sending her a bit of money every month. But she didn’t have a job yet. A real job, not this forced university funding job. A job which she could only apply to with her degree in archeology. 

Everyone has told her she wouldn’t find a job in the field, that only the far more experienced archaeologist experts would be getting booked on excavation sites.  Y/N sighed and dumped the weird smelling flour in the trash can under the front desk. 

She knew they were right. Surviving as an archeologist in South Korea was harder than in the USA or Europe, where she would’ve had better job prospects. 

Pulling out the chair behind the counter, she smiled as she sat on it, straightening her apron. She would find a way to get into an excavation. Do some internships, join a few archeological Facebook groups, and she would surely feel better. Fake it until you make it. 

The bell tinkled, announcing the arrival of a new customer.

The air in the small shop soured of cinnamon and sakura room refresher. Jinu scrunched his nose. 

He didn't know when he had pushed the door of the small bakery inwards, when exactly he had entered the small space. A few white wooden chairs stood in two corners of the store, accompanied by equally white round marble tables decorated with lacy white table cloths. Tulips that were starting to wilt, filled various vases in the small space. A warm lamp hanging from the ceiling, inviting dust so sit on it if not cleaned properly.

Demons did not have to eat human food. They could, but it didn’t make them survive. They had the burden of robbing people of their souls, their entire lives, who deserved it the least. People at their lowest point. Homeless people. Desperate teenagers who ran away from home at night because they had long since given up hope of a better life. Jinu wanted to feel sorry for them. On dark days, the only thing that kept him waking up from his dreary sleep was the small flame of hope he protected inside himself for all those years.

But what choice did he have, what choice but to take away the only thing they had left in their miserable lives?

A low hum interrupted the path of his wandering eyes, which scrutinized every detail of the bakery.

He turned around. He was used to people starting to scream, especially women, when they spotted him. When they saw the K-Pop star. When they saw the version of him that millions of people loved. Forced smile, clothes that no grown man would voluntarily wear, happiness basically tattooed on his face. These reactions soothed something inside him. 

On days when he wondered what it was like to be really liked by someone, or even loved... on those days it wasn't quite so bad to think about it. After all, he had fans who loved him, didn't he? Isn't that what counted? With every new fan, he reached thousands of others. One step closer to their goal. 

True love and affection, which did not have to be bought or hypocritized, did not exist. 

But she didn’t scream. She just sat there. He almost didn’t spot her sitting behind the counter, which displayed varieties of tuna sandwiches and some adequate looking baked goods. When she spotted him standing there all still, she quickly put her phone aside and stood up. 

Jinu wanted to chuckle. Now he knew where the sakura scent came from. 

Her hair was tied together behind her head, some fashion strands hanging down her temples. It curled slightly, maybe from the heat of the oven behind her. Maybe it was just her natural hair texture. 

Her lips moved, but he heard nothing. She smelled of cherry blossoms and cinnamon, looked as if the word unhappy was not part of her vocabulary. 

Her fingers touched her necklace, nails embellished with pink nail polish. He had never understood why women painted their nails when hardly anyone would pay attention to such things. 

His eyebrows furrowed. 

They looked beautiful.

"Do you need help?" 

His eyes snapped up.

Y/N didn’t believe in angels. 

She didn’t have a hard childhood growing up. She had two married parents and an annoying older sister that moved out from home years ago and barely texted her anymore. While most of her friend’s parents got divorced in high school or throughout college and university, her parents stayed together. Simply out of convenience, or out of love that still lingered in their hearts from all those years ago, Y/N wasn’t sure what it was that kept them together for this long. 

They were busy working all the time, her father an architect that traveled abroad often, and her mom a veterinary nurse. Their marriage worked, but as the years went on, Y/N felt more and more invisible to their love. Their affection barely was enough for themselves, and she as their youngest child became forgotten. When she was younger, she used to curse out the devil for making her parents so successful in life. She didn’t believe in angels or the tale of every person having a guardian angel, because if they really existed, they did a really bad job.

But as she looked up to the customer who entered the small shop, ready to recite her studied standard greeting, she froze. 

He was tall. The smell of rain emitted from him, most likely from wandering outside in the still damp streets. But he didn’t say anything, he just stared at her.

He looked at her like she had the answer to all of his life problems, as if she was a puzzle waiting to be solved. 

His eyes looked mesmerizing. A deep brown, almost black, looked back at her own eyes, captivating her in a trance she was unable to escape. Was this how sirens lured sailors into their deathly embrace?

But he didn’t look evil. He didn’t look like the type of man to hurt you, just to feel malicious. 

She tried to speak, but the words didn’t want to leave her mouth. Her fingers wandered to her necklace, touching the small gemstone pendant hanging on it. It was a nervous habit she picked up during exam phase in high school, her fingers playing with her jewelry as soon as she got the slightest bit anxious. 

She certainly wasn’t in high school anymore, and she definitely didn’t know why she was uneasy, why she suddenly felt conscious about her hair, the stains on her apron, or that she forgot to apply mascara this morning. 

Shaking her head, she forced her fingers to let go of her necklace and instead grip on the marble counter in front of her. 

“Do you need help?” 

The man seemed to snap out of his trance, and shook his head. 

“No, no- I mean yes.”

Y/N crooked her eyebrow and hummed. Out of customers talking to someone on the phone, placing their card on the card reader without telling her they want to pay by card, and customers that complained about the prices, the ones who were unsure what to get were her favorite. 

“Any idea of what you want to get today? A sweet treat or a hearty snack?”

He shook his head. Jinu wasn’t prepared to talk to anyone, less a woman who he didn’t know why his words suddenly turned to thin air when looking at. Taking a deep breath, he looked at the displace of products behind the glass. He was a charming, young superstar, who never had to try to get humans to like him. They just did, annoyance and rejection foreign to him. He knew that that affection wasn’t real, but it was the best available for him at the moment. But this woman was blind to his charm it seemed, indifferent to his looks. 

Y/N wasn’t unfazed. She tried to appear that way, at the very least. Inside of her, she was screaming at how sinfully good he looked. She couldn’t afford to think that way about anyone. Love didn’t last, a curse doomed to dissolve under time. But God, if his eyes didn’t want her to jump into his arms, she didn’t know what do think anymore. 

Humming again, she tapped her foot against the wooden floor of the bakery. 

“Do you like it spicy?”

His head snapped up from where he was previously looking at, pupils widened.

“What?”

Y/N furrowed her eyebrows at his reaction. How couldn’t he understand this simple-

“Oh! No, no, not like that! Oh God-“

Jinu chuckled, her reaction making him feel slightly bad for his uncertainty of what to get. 

“Yeah, I like it spicy.”

Y/N looked at the man who was holding back a laugh, and furrowed her eyebrows.

“Are you making fun of me?”

She pressed her lips into a thin line, crossing her arms. 

“No. I mean it. I like spicy food. I don’t look like a liar, do I?”

Y/N shook her head, sighing and pointing to the left side of the food display. She was getting underpaid, and she only got 4 hours of sleep. She didn’t want to argue with anyone, less this sinfully charming Korean Adonis. 

“We have chicken sandwiches with gochujang, grilled garaetteok, or plain chili filled rice balls.”

Jinu pretended to think about which option to choose, but in reality he was just using the time to look at her from underneath his eyelashes. He didn’t know what about her made him curious, it just…felt right to look at her.

He straightened up again and looked at her, really looked at her.

“What is your favorite?”

Truth was, Jinu didn’t know how any of these dishes tasted like. The last time he ate food for enjoyment reasons was 400 years ago, the taste of everything he once loved long forgotten in his trapped mind. He didn’t know how to cook either. His mother always cooked for him and his little sister, refusing to let him do anything besides working hard on his career. He shook his head. Laughter echoed inside his head, the smile of a woman he didn’t recognize haunting his mind. 

Y/N didn’t know what to answer to that. No one cared about her opinion, everyone just expecting her to wrap up their food and give them their change. She put a loose strand of hair behind her ear and shook her head. 

“I don’t have one. I don’t like spicy food at all.”

He furrowed his eyebrows. “Then what made you think I would like it?”

She shrugged her shoulders. “You look like the opposite of me. I don’t like spicy food, so I figured you might like it.”

Jinu looked her up and down. She was wearing faint pink colored jeans, a white blouse and over that her black work apron with a few stains on it. Her pink nails and jewelry only complemented her outfit. She was right.

While she was a star trying to shine, he was a meteor trying not to crash into earth. 

“So what do you like then?”

She pointed to a small brown baked sweet treat with white frosting on top, and dried honey in the shape of a heart draped on it. “This is the only thing in here I made myself. Everything else really is just ripped out of a plastic wrap and put into an oven.”

He nodded, not even looking at the other options. “I’ll take it then, your…” He squinted his eyes and looked down at the lettering in front of the item. “…cinnamon roll.”

Y/N smiled at that. She didn’t know what drew her to him. He looked strangely familiar to her, the level of familiar of someone you met in a dream you only dreamed once. 

She took a pair of tongs and placed the cinnamon roll in a brown paper bag. No one ever bought the cinnamon rolls, too special of a taste and too sweet for most people. That’s why she loved them, and the overwhelming taste of hope that came with them. Hope that she carried within her every day she came to work, every time she cried herself to sleep because of her dream job being unavailable to her. Every morning she would come to work early, just to bake the sweet treat over and over again, in hopes of not taking it home with her again like the last day and the day before that. They were the only thing in this store that she wasn’t happy to be able to take home on Sundays.  

She typed something in the screen of the cash register, the imagine for the cinnamon rolls popping up, and selected it. 

“That would make 7000 won (5$). Cash or card?”

He reached into his back pocket, and placed a crisp ten-thousand won note on the counter.

She was already typing it in the register, when he took his bag from the countertop and just shook his head. 

“Keep the change.” He opened the bag and took a bite out of the roll, eyes widening briefly before looking at her. “It’s worth the money.”

With that, he turned around and exited the store, leaving behind a baffled young lady and way too much change.

Y/N looked down at the note and put it into the till. She took out the change, and carefully dropped it into the tip jar on top of the counter. Employees weren’t allowed to take the tips customers gave them home, instead having to put them in the tip jar to be divided under all employees every week. But since it was Sunday and she would be closing the shop, the jar was all hers.

She dropped on her chair she was sitting on earlier, her arms hanging still beside her. Her head felt like a void, empty and shouting simultaneously. 

The strange feeling inside of her lingered, the premonition of this not being the first time they met. Her mind couldn’t put a finger on where she could possibly know him from, and it killed her. 

She shook her head, and wet a rag before wiping down the countertop. 

She didn’t know he was watching her. 

She didn't know that he now had his eye on her.

Y/N didn’t believe in angels, especially not in guardian angels. 

She just didn't know yet, that she now had her very own, very special, guardian.

THE LIKELIHOOD OF DONALD TRUMP and his allies in Congress taking Medicaid away from millions of low-income Americans��and, in the process, rolling back a huge piece of the Affordable Care Act—has increased significantly in the last two weeks. The change has been easy to miss, because so many other stories are dominating the news—and because the main evidence is a subtle shift in Republican rhetoric. But that shift has been crystal clear if you follow the ins and outs of health care policy—and if you were listening closely to House Speaker Mike Johnson a week ago, when he appeared on Fox News. Johnson was there to talk about the budget reconciliation plan Republicans in Congress had just passed. That plan envisions significant spending cuts to help finance trillions of dollars in tax cuts. But the math doesn’t work with cuts to discretionary spending alone. And Republicans have pledged not to touch Social Security or Medicare. That leaves just one target: Medicaid. Really the only question has been what kind of reductions in the program Republicans would seek, and how big those reductions would be. For the past few months, Republicans have been signaling they would limit themselves to imposing “work requirements” and going after what they call “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the program. Either could have a significant impact on both the budget (i.e., federal spending would come down by more than $100 billion over ten years) and access to health care (i.e., several million people would lose insurance). At the same time, Republicans seemed to be shying away from the even bigger structural changes they have tried many times before, including in their 2017 efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), when they proposed wholesale changes to the program’s financing.

HERE IT HELPS TO REMEMBER what the Affordable Care Act sought to accomplish, and the key role Medicaid played in that. The law’s main goal was to make decent health insurance available to all Americans, as part of a decades-long, still unfinished campaign to make health care a basic right, as it is in every other economically advanced nation. That meant getting coverage to the uninsured, including low-income Americans who didn’t have a way to get insurance on their own—because their jobs didn’t offer coverage or made coverage available at premiums they couldn’t afford, and because individual policies (the kind you buy on your own, not through a job) were either too expensive or unavailable to them because of pre-existing conditions. For the sake of both political and practical expediency, the Affordable Care Act’s architects sought to build on existing programs and systems rather than undertake a wholesale, Bernie Sanders–style restructuring of the health care system. And so they turned to Medicaid, which had been in place for nearly fifty years and was already providing coverage to low-income Americans across the country. But Medicaid is a joint federal-state program, with Washington putting up the majority of money and leaving administration to states, as long as they keep within certain guidelines. And for most of the program’s history, the majority of states stuck to the minimum requirements, or relatively close, meaning they limited coverage to certain categories of people, including children, young single mothers, and the elderly.

[...] To make this expansion financially viable for the states, the Affordable Care Act bumped up the federal matching rate, under a formula that—today—means Washington is picking up 90 percent of the cost. That bump proved crucial after 2012, when the Supreme Court made the expansion of Medicaid optional. The promise of those extra federal matching funds helped persuade even many otherwise skeptical Republican state officials (like the ones in my home state of Michigan) to take the money and expand their programs. As of today, forty of the states have expanded Medicaid, if not through legislative action then through ballot initiative. That’s the single biggest reason the U.S. uninsured rate is at record lows. But conservatives object to all of the taxing and spending Medicaid expansion requires, and say the government intervention makes health care worse, not better. They’ve tried to block expansion where they could—which is why ten Republican-led states still don’t have it—and in 2017 they made sure the GOP’s Obamacare-repeal bills included provisions to take away the extra funding. All of those bills failed, including an attempt that the late Arizona Republican John McCain killed with a dramatic thumbs-down gesture on the Senate floor. The ensuing political backlash (Republicans got hammered in the 2018 midterms) is a big reason why Republicans have mostly gone out of their way to avoid making overt threats against either the Affordable Care Act or Medicaid. But the interest in ending expansion funding is still there—in no small part because the money is still there—and in recent years especially Republicans have spun their efforts more as an attempt to preserve Medicaid for what they say are the truly vulnerable groups that need it.

One source for this argument is the Paragon Health Institute, one of several think tanks launched by alumni of the first Trump administration, whose researchers have argued that adding all of these working-age, childless adults to Medicaid has put extra financial strains on the program, while overwhelming the doctors and other providers who see Medicaid patients. As a result, these researchers say, the children, pregnant women, seniors, and people with disabilities who had previously depended on the program now have a harder time getting care.

I Know Exactly What They Are Doing

I hear people all around me saying, “They are going to crash the economy. Surely they don’t mean to crash the economy.”

I beg to differ. This is curated failure.

Let me start off by saying that I am not an economist — I don’t even have a finance or accounting degree and I’m really bad at math in the first place.

But I do pay attention. I notice things and I am quick to see a pattern. I observe the world and the people in charge of it. I listen to the words they say and then measure those words against their actions.

You don’t need to be an economist to look around and see that the Trump administration is going to cause economic disaster — a recession or a depression. And it is by design. It is a feature, not a bug.

How do I know this?

I live under a GOP Supermajority. I have lived under their boot for two decades. They have economically damaged my state and it wasn’t by accident. They did it to sell off the state and workers and land to the wealthy. They created a desperate situation in Missouri and that desperation equates to bounty for the oligarchs.

The new Gilded Age. Make America desperate again.

Many Missourians are now poor and sick and abused and desperate.

The wealthy have thrown shit at the walls in red states to see what sticks. They found the winning formula, wrote it into a plan called Project 2025, and now bring it nationwide.

The plan is to make the US a version of Missouri. And just over 40 days in, we can see that the plan is working.

Let me show you: the small rural American farmer is almost non-existent. He was wiped out decades ago.

In 1988, 32% of the nation's hog production came from family or small operations that produced fewer than 1,000 hogs per year. By 2000, that same size category only produced 2% of the nation's hogs.

Two percent.

Now, almost every pork product eaten in the US is produced on a factory farm. Wealthy corporations moved in and created a monopoly in the market. That monopoly is neither more healthy for Americans nor better for local economies.

Wealthy corporations put most family hog operations out of business and that means farming folks had to go to town for work…for a corporation. They depend on the availability of jobs in town instead of their own farm to pay the bills. When those town jobs dry up, the desperation ensues.

And now we have a trade war, so if your family farm happened to survive the last few decades, Trump’s tariffs on Canada and Mexico — and their retaliatory tariffs — will devastate your family farm. Guess where I found that exact plan? Project 2025.

Shrink American farmers’ access to foreign markets, restricting growth opportunities for producers.

But, as I have written, most rural folks aren’t farmers. So what other things have I noticed being burnt to the ground in rural America?

Public schools.

Missouri is 49th in the nation for educational funding. The state only supplies 32% of the funding schools need to open their doors, turn on the lights, and pay teachers. The rest of school funding must be found in decimated rural towns that often don’t have a stoplight, much less a grocery store or businesses that can make up the funding shortfall.

Because of that, over 30% of Missouri schools run a four-day week. Almost every four-day district is in rural Missouri. We run four-day weeks not for convenience or student achievement but to recruit and retain teachers.

Missouri pays starting teachers at the lowest rate in the country. That is by design.

This short week can also be a nightmare for folks trying to find daycare one day per week, especially hitting women hard. Several Missouri parents — overwhelmingly moms — are forced to work around the day off as childcare is not easy to find in our small communities.

It makes it difficult to make ends meet with one income and rural Missouri loses population each decade because most folks can’t live in an area without jobs and daycares and five-day school weeks.

Again, by design. Make folks desperate.

Missouri Republicans have defunded schools to hasten the hollowing out rural parts of the state. It’s working, but just to hurry the process along, these lawmakers pulled even more more state funding from defunded schools to siphon it to private religious schools.

Guess where I found the plan to destroy rural schools? Project 2025. The playbook my lawmakers have been following for two decades was written out nearly word for word.

That has been the plan all along. Empty out rural America.

Why in the world would anyone want to destroy rural America either by creating conditions to hurt small farmers or close rural schools? Because they want to sell off rural parts to the highest bidder. Because if they can drive people out of rural spaces, or make them so desperate that they’ll accept any job at any pay rate, they can bring in large corporate farms and there is no one to protest the environmental impacts or force them to pay their fair share in taxes.

This is what the oligarchs and the tech bros working for them envision for the entire country.

Curated failure. Carefully chosen and organized chaos to create the desired effect. They did it to enable the selling the country and workers and land to the wealthy.

I have witnessed it from the inside. I live in Missouri and no amount of letter writing has cured my state or persuaded my lawmakers, but one thing has slowed them down…organized action.

Showing up in numbers that can’t be hidden or explained away. Marching in the streets. Testifying by the hundreds. Making lawmakers accountable with constant contact. Letting them know we see them and we know.

Public action.

They want us poor and sick and abused and desperate. They did it in red states and now want the same for the entire United States.

Refuse them. Throw sand in the gears. Take up space. Get in the way.

Here we go, in no particular order, here are some of my thoughts on what we'll see in the next year or two based on the election results:

THE ECONOMY

Unless something pretty serious happens, it's very likely that Trump will make good on his promise of massive tariffs on all American imports. Given that we import a lot of stuff from the rest of the world (check any manufactured item in your house, I'll bet it doesn't say "made in America"), that means prices will likely increase substantially. The predictable result of that is probably a pullback of consumer spending and a recession. If we're really unlucky, we'll have inflation and a recession at the same time, the dreaded "stagflation".

More broadly, it's likely that the only thing Republicans will do economically in terms of legislation is pass a massive, deficit financed tax cut for the rich. Again. Honestly, this is an easy one to guess because it's what they do every time they have power. It's direct effect will probably be minimal (though any effect is likely to be inflationary) although it remains an open question how long the US can run up the credit card without any major economic consequences.

We're also likely to see a wave of deregulation. Expect the new administration to try to roll back all of the consumer protections that Biden has put in place, end the lawsuits against big corporations that are exploiting their market power, and generally tilt the playing field back in favor of big corporations and wealthy people.

Oh yes, and let's talk about the immigration thing here. Trump is promising to deport millions of illegal immigrants (by current estimates there are about 11 million of them). And, look, I'm not a professional economist, but I think it's reasonably easy to guess what happens when you remove millions of people of working age from the labor pool. Again, this is likely to be inflationary (less workers available, so pay and, thus, costs, go up) and recessionary (fewer consumers buying things) at the same time.

PUBLIC HEALTH

With a knowledgeable public health expert like RFK Jr. leading the government's public health efforts, what could possibly go wr… sorry, couldn't finish that with a straight face. Yeah, Trump's gone off the deep end public health-wise ever since the public health people kept pointing out how badly he was screwing up his last major public health emergency, so now he's only listening to quacks and nut jobs.

The odds are pretty good that vaccines are on the target list and the administration will reduce or eliminate programs that encourage them. It's a good bet that, in the next decade or so, we'll see a resurgence of diseases like measles and polio that we thought we'd eradicated. Of course, if we get another pandemic like Covid, I'd bet on a high body count and massive economic impact as well.

We're also likely to see more and more women dying due to pregnancy-related complications. Biden was pushing hard to enforce a federal law that requires hospitals to save women's lives, but it's doubtful that Trump will keep doing that. He'll also likely not enforce any other protections and allow even stronger crackdowns on abortion in states that are eager to do so.

MINORITIES

If you're not a straight, white, cisgender, Christian man, things are likely to get a lot worse for you over the next four years. Look for the administration to take every opportunity to attack gay and trans people and to promote Christianity over other beliefs. The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice is also likely to be neutered, as it has been under every Republican administration since at least Reagan, so many states will happily violate the rights of racial minorities without any federal pushback. The same is true of laws and regulations that protect women.

Beyond the official, though, we also have to face the societal effects of another Trump Presidency. Despite the loud protestations of his supporters, Trump is beloved among the racist far-right, and for good reason. His administration borrowed heavily from their ideas and their language and even used their personnel and there's no reason to expect a second term to be any different. There is a reason that right-wing terror surged in our country in Trump's first term and it'll probably do the same now.

Expect more shootings of black and brown people and more attacks on Jews and Jewish places of worship. The racists believe the President is on their side and he's given them no reason to think otherwise.

THE NEXT ELECTION

All right, I'm going out on a limb here and this is my longest range projection, but it's a fairly reasonable bet that Democrats will take/retake the House of Representatives in 2026. I can confidently predict this because the party that controls the presidency has lost House seats in nearly every election since the Great Depression. Based on current results (which may change as western states count more votes), the Republicans will have a 4 vote margin in the House and the average midterm loss is 27 seats. Heck, they lost 47 seats in 2018 the last time Trump was in office. Even the Democrats who had a good year in 2022 still lost 10 seats. Seems like a pretty good bet.

As for the Senate, that's a bit harder to predict. At the moment, Republicans will have anywhere from 52 to 54 seats when all the votes are counted from this election. Based on the 2020 Senate elections map (that's the class of Senators that will be up for re-election in 2026), I'd count anywhere from 2-4 seats that the Democrats might be able to flip, the rest are probably safe. So is it possible that Democrats could retake the Senate in '26? Absolutely. Is it likely? Good question. Ask me in a year or so.

CONCLUSION

It's likely that life in America is going to get worse over the next year or two, how much worse depends a lot on how we react. At best, we'll likely face further inflation (every economic policy Trump has voiced support for is inflationary), increased sickness and disease, and increased attacks on the lives and well-beings of anyone who isn't a straight, white, cisgender, Christian man. At worst, well, all of those things but much more intense.

If we're fortunate, Democrats will take the House and serve as a much-needed check on the worst impulses of President-elect Trump. If not, at least the next election will likely do it, though a good deal of damage will be done between now and then.

holy fuck this is crazy okay so i’ve been thinking about studying at national and kapodistrian university of athens and i’ve been searching around the internet seeing people’s opinions on the school and i saw a post you made about studying there which is such a coincidence because we are moots! anyways i just want to ask how do you like it there? is there anything i should know before applying?

OH MY GOSH, OH MY GOSH, OH MY GOSH!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!!!

Okay SO, I have a bachelor’s in classical studies and linguistics, I think Americans call that a double major? That thing was EXCRUCIATING, it was 60 subjects in 4 years, plus an internship and a thesis. My master’s, which is in computational linguistics and data analytics, has been even harder. I have too much to say about this topic, so I’ll categorise all the shit I need to speak on and hopefully this will help you!

Academics: The education is top notch. There’s a reason it’s one of the top 100 universities in the world in many lists. There’s no department that has a bad reputation. You’ll have to do a lot of individual studying, though. We’ve got well equipped libraries. The professors are really good at what they do. I’m not sure whether you wish to pursue a bachelor’s or a master’s, so keep in mind that we have almost no Bscs where the lessons are delivered in the English language and only a few Master’s, which I believe are about Medicine, Law etc. Almost always, the lessons are conducted in Greek and you’ll need a Greek language certificate to get accepted to a greek university. UNLESS OF COURSE you’re only here for Erasmus or you’ve managed to find an english delivered programme, in which case you’ll be totally fine. Just make sure you check!

Finance: All bachelors’ are free. Almost all masters’ are 100% free and if they aren’t, they don’t cost more than 2k euros for the whole duration of your studies, and even then you can apply for an exemption. Now, since everything is free, there’s no such thing as financial aid or loans for students here, so you’ll have to find a way to cover your life expenses yourself. I’d say the average person needs about 800 euros - 1k per month in order to lead a somewhat decent life in Athens without a roommate. Your uni schedule will allow you to work (if your visa allows you to) since attendance is not mandatory here, except if you have any labs. Also, as a student you’ll have major discounts almost everywhere, so make sure you ask about it everywhere you are.

Premises: Please bear in mind that the actual university buildings in Greece suck MAJOR ass. They’re old, they’re brutalist, they’re bare, they’ve got no heating or air conditioning and so on. They are horrible. Generally, the more prestigious a faculty is, the worse the condition of its establishment. Picture soviet union buildings. There are very few dorms available in Athens, so make sure to check if you meet the criteria for one or if you’ll need to arrange for accommodation yourself. Mind you, finding an apartment to rent in Athens is gonna be very challenging. The house market is so bad that it is unusual for Greeks to leave their parents’ house before getting married, usually in their 30s, so roommates ain’t really a thing here. The university does offer free breakfast, lunch and dinner every day though (there are certain financial conditions that dictate whether one is entitled to free food or not but they’re so lenient that almost everyone meets them, like your family’s annual income not being more than 100k or smth).

Administration: Now, when it comes to the administration of the university, it is quite decent. You’ll hear a lot of people complain about this, but honestly we Greeks do love to complain. The administration gets things done fast usually, as long as you make sure to have the right paperwork for your requests. We’ve also got a great career office, helped me land 2 different office jobs when I was younger.

Social life: Your peers are going to adore you. Young people here LOVE foreign students, everyone will want to be friends with you. We’ve got a bunch of different clubs you can join and nightlife in Athens is awesome. Winter kinda sucks ass, but spring and summer are totally amazing and you’ll be able to visit a shit ton of places. Greeks are generally insanely friendly and helpful. If you are a POC or obviously LGBT+ (meaning that people could clearly guess you belong in the community by glancing at you), I have to warn you that some old fucks or trashy people may glance strangely at you at the bus stop or the superkmarket, but the people you’ll actually have and want to socialise with here (fellow students, people your age etc.) will love you. The youth is very progressive here, and while old and middle aged folks can be a pain, they may scowl at you but nothing worse.

ALL IN ALL: EKPA or UOA is a great university, meaning that it is a very good place to acquire knowledge. Our facilities are kinda shit, though. You can only accept it for its inner beauty, lol. Our libraries and lessons are filled with material in the Greek language mostly. Education here is free. The university has a lot to offer and our teachers are extremely experienced and knowledgeable. You’ll almost never have homework, your grade in a lesson will usually depend 100% on your finals. You’ll have to study a lot. Athens and Greece in general are very beautiful. The people here are very loving and understanding and you’ll have an amazing time here. HOWEVER, if you’re looking for an aesthetically pleasing college life, I recommend you skip it. It’s nearly impossible to romanticise EKPA. Will you have a good and fun experience here and will you come out a very educated person? Yup. Will you have a DREAMY college life and reality you’ll long for in the years to come? Fuck no!

I’ve posted before that we’re anxiously awaiting and preparing for our second baby and with that we’re focusing heavily on saving money! We have high hopes of buying first cars, paying for college, etc etc for both of our girls and despite the fact one is 18 months old and the other is still in utero, we know that the saving and preparing starts now. I do not bring in an income in our home but I do help manage the money my husband brings in and I work hard at making every dollar go as far as possible, so here are some things that make our money go further:

1. Eating at home - everyone gives this advice and it’s because it’s 100% true. You are literally throwing away money eating out and more and more the food that you buy at restaurants isn’t even that good. An easy way to make the switch is by making crockpot meals. Many are “dump and go” meals that require no skill and 9/10 you’ll even have leftovers for lunch the next day. Plus a crock pot is like $20-25 and they last forever.

2. Pay off existing debt - I’m not talking just your monthly minimums. If you have an extra $100 without a job in your monthly budget, it should go towards debt. Any extra you pay on your principal now is money you don’t have to pay in interest later. If you need more motivation for paying off your debt early, pull up a debt calculator and see how much in interest you’ll be paying before it’s all said and done. I promise you’ll get motivated real quick.

3. Create a budget!!! - if you are just floating through life, spending money willy nilly, I promise you don’t even realize how much money you’re just throwing away every month. I remember after I graduated from college and met my husband, we sat down to look at my finances together and I was legitimately embarrassed to see how much money I spent just getting coffee. I was spending a car payments worth on coffee every month and I literally was a barista. I could make that ish at home!! side note - "fun money" is a category you should have in your budget. You are bound to stumble if you aren't ever allowed to spend any money on yourself.

4. Determine what’s worth investing in and what’s not - for us this is list is pretty short. We invest in food and “clean” products. We eat and feel good on a high protein diet so we prioritize meat within our budget. Yes, there are plenty of cheaper plant protein sources, but that is not how we choose to fuel our bodies and it’s not how we feel best. But, more than just choosing to prioritize this financially, we prioritize the time it takes for my husband to go hunting to help save money on this as well. As far as “clean” products, I’m talking fragrance/toxin free shampoos, conditioners, cleaning supplies, etc. We’ll shop sales if one becomes available but we will not skimp with a $1 bottle of shampoo that will irritate my husbands skin or leave me with a migraine. This list will and should look different for every family but if you have your priorities clearly laid out there’s no room for convincing yourself that something not on this list is worth spending extra money on.

5. If you can make it at home, you should make it at home - cleaning products, food, gifts, home decor, all of it.

6. Thrift! But not as a hobby - I love thrifting and there’s a heck of a thrill in finding a beautiful ceramic mug or stumbling upon a cute sweater, but you’re not saving money like that. You should thrift for the things you need first and make sure to have a clear idea of what you’re looking for before going in. The thrift store should ideally be your first stop when looking to buy, but if you can’t find it after a bit of time looking, you’re not less than for having to buy new.

7. Borrow borrow borrow - sure, it’s kinda annoying to borrow other peoples stuff, but there’s really no reason to buy something you only need once or twice.

8. Learn to sew- I’ve had so many pieces of clothing rip at a seam and if I didn’t know how to stitch that back together, I’d have to throw it away and probably replace it (I’m looking you pockets on jackets). Instead, a five minute YouTube video has saved me, idk, probably at least $100.

9. Order your groceries online - this is probably very dependent on which grocers you have close to you, but ours still has online coupons and sales and it is an excellent way to make sure that you're sticking to your list. Plus, it's a godsend with little kids.

10. Finally, identify yours and your spouse's strengths and weaknesses - by this I mean, can you not help yourself from buying something if you go "just to look around" at your favorite shop? Does your husband add 47 unnecessary items to the grocery order anytime it's his turn to do the shopping? Whatever your individual money spending weakness are, identify those and help keep each other accountable or hand off the things that the other excels in so the temptation is just never there.

Sorry, but this is another post that is tangentially about dealing with grief, and mostly about dealing with parents.

GUYS- despite what you may feel like, I PROMISE you, you so are so much better equipped to start over again in modern society than your parents.

Your parents have OLD survival skills that are important- cooking, sewing, laundry, house repair.

Some of them even have the wisdom of years in dealing with people, and the emotional milestones people go through at different points in life.

What they really don’t have?

A grasp on things like: signing up for anything in the modern world. Applying for grants or jobs. How financial institutions handle bussiness. Those things that you need to start and run anything outside your own home.

Now this is general, and there will always be exceptions, but why do I say this?

1) watching younger and younger adults come into the library for electronic assistance for things like banking, taxes, and how to retrieve a password for email.

2) watching my mother trying to navigate finances now that my father is not here to do it.

When he died she looked at what he had done and said: Why is this so complicated? What were you trying to hide from whom? He is robbing Peter to pay Paul!

To be fair to her, he did have far too many credit cards, and she was under the impression that there was one. He was hiding that, and not talking about our financial situation with any sense of reality to anyone. He is in the wrong for that.

On the other hand, every time she looks at even half of the options available to her for any issue, like paying a bill, or canceling out an account, she is overwhelmed by the data and completely freezes.

She hates that the exact thing she is looking for isn’t on the first page open when she logs on, she hates that handling a loan is not like handling a bank account is not like handling a credit card. The buttons to push to make things happen are different on each page, and for every different financial institution.

She hates that she has to sit through a million computer options on the phone to get a live person. She hates any task she sets for herself will take 30min, and longer if she wants to understand it first or is wracked by anxiety and indecision.

Like- I have been trained to fail the first three times I attempt something and to only attempt things worth my energy.

I basically understand the logic of online accounts, and if I can’t find what I need immediately can fiddle until I figure it out.

She simply does not have those skills, and she sees it as her being stupid, which make her spiral more, and then the task is impossible.

I think… I think we are just used to everything being hard all the time and handling businesses anyways. They remember when companies bent over backwards to make everything easy to use.

When SOCIETY was built to FUNCTION.

And they don’t know what to do if everything they have built is ripped out from under them and they have to start over in this new world.

Don’t let anyone who is even half a generation older than you tell you how to get started in life. Or at least take that with a whole teaspoon of salt. Look to the other people in the muck with you and know you will have to figure it out together. As society in the US falls apart the older generations are going to be even more lost than you are. I am so sorry.

In a Monday morning meeting, Thomas Shedd, the recently appointed Technology Transformation Services director and Elon Musk ally, told General Services Administration workers that the agency’s new administrator is pursuing an “AI-first strategy,” sources tell WIRED.

Throughout the meeting, Shedd shared his vision for a GSA that operates like a “startup software company,” automating different internal tasks and centralizing data from across the federal government.

The Monday meeting, held in-person and on Google Meet, comes days after WIRED reported that many of Musk’s associates have migrated to jobs at the highest levels of the GSA and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Prior to joining TTS, which is housed within the GSA, Shedd was a software engineer at Tesla, one of Musk’s companies. The transition has caused mass confusion amongst GSA staffers who have been thrown into surprise one-on-one meetings, forced to present their code—often to young engineers who did not identify themselves—and left wondering what the future of the agency’s tech task force will look like.

Shedd attempted to answer these questions on Monday, providing details on a number of projects the agency will pursue over the coming weeks and months. His particular focus, sources say, was an increased role for AI not just at GSA, but at agencies government-wide.

In what he described as an “AI-first strategy,” sources say, Shedd provided a handful of examples of projects GSA acting administrator Stephen Ehikian is looking to prioritize, including the development of “AI coding agents” that would be made available for all agencies. Shedd made it clear that he believes much of the work at TTS and the broader government, particularly around finance tasks, could be automated.

"This does raise red flags,” a cybersecurity expert who was granted anonymity due to concerns of retaliation told WIRED on Monday, who noted that automating the government isn’t the same as automating other things, like self-driving cars. “People, especially people who aren’t experts in the subject domain, coming into projects often think ‘this is dumb’ and then find out how hard the thing really is.”

Shedd instructed employees to think of TTS as a software startup that had become financially unstable. He suggested that the federal government needs a centralized data repository, and that he was actively working with others on a strategy to create one, although it wasn’t clear where this repository would be based or if these projects would comply with privacy laws. Shedd referred to these concerns as a “roadblock” and said that the agency should still push forward to see what was possible.

Sources say that during the call Shedd tightly connected TTS and the United States Digital Services—rebranded as the United States DOGE Service, or DOGE, under Trump—as “pillars” of a new technological strategy. Later in the meeting, he said that there was no plan to merge the two groups and that projects would flow through them both depending on available staff and expertise, but continued emphasizing the upcoming collaboration between TTS and DOGE.

Employees, sources say, also asked questions about the young engineers, who had previously not been identifying themselves in meetings. Shedd said that one of them felt comfortable enough to introduce himself in meetings on Monday, sources say, though Shedd added that he was nervous about their names being publicly revealed and their lives upended.

Shedd was unable to answer many staff questions about the deferred resignations, the return to office mandate, or if the agency’s staff would face substantial cuts, according to sources. At one point, Shedd indicated that workforce cuts were likely for TTS, but declined to give more details. I'm sure everyone has thought about their current or future finances many times, and I'm also sure that you'd love to make a lot of money. We live in incredible times where if you just have a phone and access to the internet EVERYTHING you could want to learn can be learned online for free. Just go on YouTube and search something along the lines of (topic) 101, (topic) masterguide, etc. the possibilities are endless and I assure you that you will find something. If you don't mind spending money for courses try skillshare to unlock all courses available on their site or Udemy, they often do 80% off sales so you can get their courses for like $5.

Learn languages

I can't stress this enough! This is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself! Learning a new language can open so many doors for you! It can help you get a higher paying job, give you countless new opportunities and help you meet incredible people who speak that language. There are no right or wrong languages to choose, but in case you have no idea what you want, here are some of the most important factors:

Amount of speakers: This will be your main factor if your main goal is to reach as many people as possible, for any reason. This includes languages such as: Spanish, French, English (duh), or if you're up for a challenge: Hindi, Mandarin or Arabic.

Enjoyment: I think this should be important to everyone. You can't learn a language if you don't enjoy it. Try to learn the basics and see if you like how it sounds and how it feels.

Travel/domicile: if you know your dream is to move to a different country, where another language is spoken, it might be a good idea to learn it. Also, if you're interested in some country's culture you might also find it to be a great reason to learn it.

Job opportunities: although, as I mentioned above, pretty much every single language will give you many opportunities, it might vary depending on where you live and what your field of work is, for example if you live in the US, the most beneficial languages for you to learn will be English and Spanish. If you work in a company that works with Japanese companies, then Japanese might be a good choice for you. Of course, the most popular languages will have benefits pretty much anywhere in the world.

Reading is incredible! It has countless health benefits and it is a great way to learn about new things or expand your vocabulary. And no, you don't need to read educational books, although it sure is even more helpful. If you want to learn new words reading any book at all could help. I can say that as someone who grew up constantly reading people are often shocked at my vocabulary (in my native language), even since I was 5 years old, so yes, it works.

Mindful scrolling

Instead of just sitting on your phone all day watching stupid videos, pay attention to what content you're consuming and how long you spend on your phone.

Self care

I'm sure you guys already know that, so treat this as a reminder. Take care of yourself! And remember, looking out together can help you a lot in life. So put that face mask on, buy that new perfume you like and most importantly - prioritize your health!

feary is the kind of man who finishes altercations, not start them, and he's always been like that since he was little. he thrives in the shadows and in the dark corners of the world, and bullying people kind of puts you front and centre and doesn't serve that goal at all. when he was young, he was bullied, on occasion, but it wouldn't last too long, since he'd quickly let anyone who fucked around find out.

pride 02. in what areas might your muse be a little overconfident? are they overconfident in the sense that they don't have the skills to back it up, or in the sense that they do have the skills but they are obnoxious in their confidence?

feary would say there's nothing his skills won't back him up, and perhaps therein lies his overconfidence. as much as he tries, caring and comfort and areas that requires more humanity than he can afford, it's not his forté, and yet he often positions himself into this role, particularly where his siblings are concerned. is he a good parent to his siblings? maybe not. but feary would argue he's better than their father by a long shot, and certainly the best they'll get regardless.

sloth 03. what chores/responsibilities does your muse avoid doing at all costs?

so, feary being a manager at hell's gate is actually a hilariously funny but unfortunately ill-fitting job, considering how much he dislikes managing people and dealing with them on a day to day basis. if it didn't serve the shamrocks and his brother like it does, he absolutely would not be doing it, preferring to work behind the scenes working with numbers and data, rather—which he also does, making sure to keep the club stocked, doing the finances for both the club and the shamrocks, and making sure their employees get their salaries. that's what he prefers to do. unless it's vitally important, feary prefers to divert all problems to the other managers.

envy 01. does your muse get jealous easily, or does it take a lot for them to feel it?

something that would come as a surprise to many people, most likely, is that no, feary is absolutely not the jealous type. some of it comes from knowing his own worth and attempts at making him jealous simply being met with being dropped like a hot potato, and much of it comes from the fact that if he wants something, he'll simply take it—even if what he wants is a person. he's also very non-committal when it comes to relationships, doesn't place ownership upon the people he sleeps with, and even then, jealousy doesn't come into effect, because... well, if someone he sleeps with decides to sleep with someone else, he either doesn't care, or he'll simply make sure everyone knows where his claims lay. but he wouldn't ever constrict his partners' agency in that. the consequences are for everyone else.
