the gammy is coming up fast, only 2 weeks till registration opens and about 4 months till the actual exam. I am freaking out a little. I don’t have a lot of time to give to studying for it since I’m already 5 units deep at uni this semester. I know I have next march as a back up as well (and if I do yr4 of my degree I’ll also have september 2020 and march 2021 as backups too) but my psychiatrist once heard me say that during a session and stopped me and gave me a stern lecture about how I have to go into the exam adamant that this will be the only time I need to sit it and I can’t go around thinking I have back up times I need to go in whole heartedly, and considering he’s been through med school I’m not about to argue. (this dude also has a son my age who is currently in med by umat pathway access and I kind of almost died when he told me he doesn’t think his son would be in med rn if he had to sit the gamsat, father of the year or what)

also at $500 a pop and like, a severe amount of stress- I really want to try hit a high score on my first time so for the rest of my journey into med I can just chill and focus on volunteering and my GPA and not spending $500 every 6 months to sit the 6 hour (7 if you count the lunch break) “one exam to rule them all” (yeah, a lot of people apparently call it that, I mean it has a fucking lunch break so you can sit and cry for an hour and people prepare for it like it’s an ultramarathon so it’s worthy of that title tbh)

so not only am I stressed about prepping for my 5 exams in 8 weeks, but also finding time to prep for what is actually one of the most important exams of my life (probably the actual most important)

Hi!! Omg this is a late response because I've been working full time and not been online so I really hope it's still useful!! I'm sorry!!I don't necessarily think you need lots of time to study for either the GAMSAT or the UKCAT. I started way later than is recommended for the GAMSAT, I only did a couple weeks and I scored in the top 10% of people that did it. I also only did one week of work on the UKCAT and scored a 725 average. (I didn't have much time to prep for either exam because of actual reasons, I swear it wasn't laziness lol). That's not to say I recommend this approach, you should definitely prepare as much as you can, but don't write them off just based on the time you have. I would choose unis first and look at which exams you need to do after. That's how I approached it. Look at what you want in terms of teaching style, which unis you like, what their requirements are compared to your grades/amount of experience. And then sit entrance exams based on your choice. I'd also apply for at least one of each course type (grad and undergrad), cos their requirements are quite different so if you don't satisfy one you still have a good shot at the other. Hi :) I'm considering doing optom at unsw next year and I was wondering how the job prospects are currently? I've heard that it'll be a saturated job market in the next few years so I'm not if its a worthwhile investment, as I'm from WA and although I'm genuinely interested, a really big factor is the $ ahaha. Also I was wondering what the community life at the uni, since I'm a bit worried I wont make any friends lmaoo? Also how difficult is the workload as compared to year 12? Thanks so much <3

Job Market re: Australia

Hey! Keep in mind, this is what info I’ve been hearing from colleagues as well as some optometrists who are hiring. If you’re from WA, then I would say that you don’t have to worry about saturated job markets if you’re going to return to your home state after graduating. I’ve heard you can get $100K starting salary even relatively close to the city. Melbourne and Sydney though are probably closer to hitting saturation, but they’re capping university take ins next year, so again it could be a completely different ballgame by the time you get out in Sydney and Melbourne. WA though is totally safe, I believe they’re underserviced because there are no optometry schools there. And of course, anywhere that is regional or rural, regardless of state is underserviced, so if you’re cool with moving out to learn a bit more about using your therapeutic skills and ocular disease, then there should be absolutely no problem. Job prospects are only a bit riskier staying with Syd/Melb metro. 

Student Life re: UNSW

Pretty friendly on the whole, I believe that because UNSW is one of the newer universities, even the aura here is a bit more cosmopolitan. We definitely have many international students, and also there are a lot of 1st years who are super bubbly because 1) it’s a new experience and they’re excited and 2) it’s a new environment and they’re apprehensive about making friends. So literally everyone feels the same way and as long as you make a little effort to get to know someone, it’ll be more than reciprocated. Just large cliques of high school friends may be trickier to break, because it’s difficult to broach friendship with someone who’s already 6 years deep in friendship with others and still not interested in making new friends.

But granted, I’m going to say that optometry is hard. Personally I would say, and I’ve also had someone describe to me, that it’s like doing 2 HSC exams every year because of the amount of info that you have to cram into 13 weeks of a semester. I’ve had a guest lecturer who was an ophthalmologist who originally graduated as an optometrist, worked for a while and then did the GAMSAT and post-grad medicine and he told us that optometry was more difficult than the generalist medical degree. I’ve also heard from numerous other people in the field, relatives, and also heard about families with children studying both optometry and medicine saying that optom undergrad is more difficult. This is most likely because the 5 year degree is meant to give you complete training, compared with medicine where you have a 6-7 year undergrad followed by the 3 year hospital training before another 5 years of specialisation. 

Be prepared for hard work and long hours. I said this in a previous ask but at the end of the day, the job that you do as an optometrist requires you to keep an eye out for sight-threatening and life-threatening conditions, as well as to deal with common eye problems day to day, so you need to learn a lot about anatomy and physiology, anatomy of the eye/head/brain and the innervation/blood supply, as well as the diseases that can arise, and how to manage and treat them. Refraction and getting an actual prescription is a skill that needs a lot of practice and refinement too.

Med school interview questions

10/11/17 I’d been asked by several people to write about med school interview questions I’d received, and this is me finally getting around to it as the Multiple-Mini-Interview (MMI) offers for Auckland are slowly starting to roll out! I’ve given general advice and info on how I prepared for interviews, which can be found under the “UMAT/GAMSAT/MED INTERVIEWS” section of the blog. I’ve attended three (omg three) med school interviews, so I’ll just give a run-down on what was asked in each. Do note that these were about one or two years ago now, so my memory’s a bit fuzzy and I’m paraphrasing these hell out of the questions. If you’re really struggling to think of ways to answer some of them, feel free to flick me a msg and I’ll try and recall how I answered. Some of the questions are kinda personal, so if you want yours answered privately, let me know! (I can’t promise that I’ll always reply as I have a busy few weeks ahead of me, and the way I answered the question might not necessarily be the ideal or ‘best’ answer!)

The University of Auckland (MMI) -December 2015

1) Homelessness in Auckland is rising. Why do you think this happens? Is it a health issue? What can be done?

2) Climate change is a huge issue now. What steps can we take (personally and collectively) to lower the effects of climate change? Should doctors care about the issue? Why/ why not?

3) Acting station: You work for a company that produces standardised tests for high school students (similar to ACER for UMAT exams, but it’s totally not ACER hahaha). Your friend who works for a tutoring company asks if she could have a copy of some of the exam questions for the students to study off of. What do you do?

4) You are a pharmacist and a girl comes up to the counter to buy laxatives, which you know are used by some people to lose weight. You recognise the girl, as you’ve seen her come in to buy the same medications multiple times before. What do you do? Do you sell her the medication? 5) Some people see themselves as a more objective person, while others see themselves as more subjective. Where do you see yourself along this spectrum? Where do you think the study of medicine/ pharmacy/ nursing lie along this spectrum? 6) What is a weakness of yours? How do you work to overcome it? 7) When was a time you felt you had been judged unfairly or critically? Australian National University (Panel interview + MMI) -September 2016

At ANU, there was a 15 minute panel interview first, where I was interviewed by the same 2 people. Afterwards there was an MMI of 6 or 8 stations (I can’t remember if there were only 6 or I’ve just forgotten about the other 2), but the stations were about 2 minutes longer than the Auckland MMI ones, and you weren’t given any reading time beforehand.

There were also other specific and odd questions, like

-What do you think of doctors who want to do research instead of practising?

MMI

1) After hearing that you’ve almost graduated, your aunt keeps asking you for medical advice and for you to perform medical examinations on her. What would you do?

2) A couple comes into see you. A woman is in need of treatment from a life-threatening condition, but she does not want it. Her husband continues to push her and ask you to convince her that she needs treatment. What are some of the ethical issues here? Why might the woman not want treatment? What do you do?

3) At this station, I was given some information about how vitamin D (?) levels varied depending on different groups of populations. The information said that Vitamin D (?) levels were significantly associated with the level of physical activity, socio-economic status and some other factors I can’t remember. I was asked to formulate a research question/ hypothesis to investigate this topic. Then I was asked to suggest any other factors that I thought might affect Vitamin D levels.

4) Before entering the room for this station, there was a note on the door saying that this wasn’t an ‘acting station’ that tested my ability to show empathy etc. Rather, it was there to test logical problem solving skills or something. I read that I was going to face an actor who was distressed as he couldn’t find his car keys (or remember where he’d parked his car?). When I went in and talked to him, he kept mentioning that he urgently needed to get home to his son who needed his medication, but couldn’t drive home.

5) FROGS! I entered a room with the interviewer sitting with a board-game in front of them. It was like a puzzle similar to checkers, where you place the little frog pieces in certain positions. A frog jumping over another frog would allow you to remove the frog piece that was jumped, and the aim of the game is to have one frog left or something... The twist was that I already knew the answer to the puzzle (it was written on a card that I was given) and I had to verbally instruct the interviewer on the other side the steps they had to take in order win the game. (Basically testing the ability to read instructions yourself, and also clearly instruct someone else).

6) It’s left my memory :(

The University of Auckland (MMI) -November 2016

1) I was given some statistics from Guy Fawke’s day for the previous year. The general trend was that there was an increase in injuries, hospitalisations, and calls to the fire brigade around Guy Fawke’s. The interviewer asked what I thought about it, and whether I thought fireworks should be banned etc.

2) Acting: You live in a rad apartment with a state of the art gymnasium (now wouldn’t that be nice). Your friend (the actor) is a busy, single dad who can’t afford to sign up to a gym, but he’s trying his best to stay healthy. He knows that the gym can be accessed if you know the combination to the keypad and since he lives super close to you and your building, he asks you for it.

3) A claaaassic one where a member of the team for a group project isn’t pulling their weight. What do you do?

4) What do you think about water fluoridation? How is it beneficial to people’s health? Should it be DHBs or local councils that have the right to decide whether to fluoridate their water?

5) More and more people are buying medications over the internet, instead of via prescription. What are the potential issues this may cause, if any? Why might people be buying meds over the internet?

6) There were a few statements about Maori people written on the question card I got before I entered the room. I was asked if I agreed with any of them. What are some other assumptions about Maori people and their health status that the general public may have?

7) What do you think your communication skills are like? How did you acquire them? How do you think you can improve them? Why is it important? What are different methods of communication? What are the most important aspects of communication?

8) What is one challenge you foresee yourself encountering as a future health professional? How will you deal with this?

so, 75% on that midsem, was not happy about it. 5% away from a HD feels like a total kick in the gonads. The class average was 50% and a lot of people did not pass so I know in my heart it wasn’t my fault that I didn’t get that HD, I was adequately prepared for a HD. maybe I could have been more prepared but I was definitely prepared enough for a HD. I hope the unit head looks at the class average and realises she screwed up. The next test for this unit is still about a month away, so I have time to pick myself up for that one and try figure out what she’s going to throw at us. 

I have two midsems coming up for med micro and molecular bio, one two weeks away and one 3 weeks away. I have a stats assignment due in 2 weeks that I want to get done by the end of this week so I can dedicate the next two weeks to midsem prep instead of stats assignment work. This week is a tute free week but since I’m doing my chem unit externally the next 3 days is full of intensive labs for me (literally 8am-5pm in 4 hour increments with one lunch break, I want to cry) so tonight I’m just working through the lab manual prepping for that. I also have a group oral coming up that’s pissing me off because a few of the group members are being little shits, and I need a HD, it’s on the physiology of SIDS cases and I’m considering just doing the whole thing myself. 

I had a psychiatrists appointment yesterday and he seems more interested in me going to med school than my parents do. He spent about 15 minutes lecturing me on how to mentally prepare myself for the gamsat and make sure that I don’t go into it with a half-ass attitude, he actually believes I can do it, which is weird considering he’s seen me at full had-to-be-hospitalised mental breakdown, like this guy had to admit me into hospital and now he’s sitting here with me genuinely lecturing me and giving me advice about getting into med school and I can see on his face that he legit thinks I have a shot at this, and i’m just like- if my psychiatrist, who went to med school himself and has seen me at my worst, thinks that I can get into med. Then I can fucking get into med.

Overall this is going to be a busy week and I hate chemistry so it’s going to be a busy PAINFUL week but whatever come at me

I know they say first year uni for bio and chem and year 12 for physics but what exactly does the exam usually cover? So would I have to study about the human body,ecology, genetics, plants, evolution, etc. ? And how do I prepare for sections 1 and 2? Thanks in advance! You are such an inspiration :)

Firstly, I’m proud of you for choosing and it’s admirable that you’ve made these long-ish term goals!

I wrote about how I prepared for sections 1 and 2 in my ‘how I studied for the GAMSAT’ post here - although your mileage may vary, so go wild and free and explore your study techniques in the meantime!

For chemistry and physics - basic first year principles you'll need to know (like how to balance equations and how to use equations, what a cell is) but the exam will generally give you the background information. You’ll probably hear this a lot, but the GAMSAT doesn’t test knowledge so much as skill and application of that knowledge.

That becomes particularly apparent in GAMSAT biology, where they’ll often give you background physiology in the passage, but you’ll be expected to interpret the graphs and make predictions and things.
