So uhh first, why did Xilog went to clone himself? Was he just bored and felt like it one day, and if 2018X had been a successful clone would he have liked him or gone absent mother either way because 2018X is annoying as hell or something?

so uh thats a funny story i kinda havent fleshed this out a lot but the rough draft is essentially: xilog kinda has a huge issue with godhood, immortality and existing beyond time and space because in his early days he met mortals and befriended them and as you can probably guess he outlived those close to him and this kind of happens over and over for him as he outlives his mortal friends and even those that are immortal but bound to a universe (which dont last forever. eventually their time is up and they collapse in on themselves giving rise to new realities and what not) yada yada idk but basically the current AU he resides in he already intervened to keep his loved ones alive forever (the other chaos gods aka dazzle, tikal, chaos, sonic by proxy) but he knows it wont last forever so at some point (i guess some time after sonic adventure 2 takes place as that is where the present of the AU takes place) he created 2018x probably in hopes of finally having someone to care about even when this universe ends basically finally not being a lonely fuck anymore but blah blah blah you know what happened he goofed and ended up with something he didnt want blah blah blah...

Xilog sort of acts as sonics mentor and also kinda is his honorary uncle i guess? he likes the kid mostly but sonic can be REALLY annoying especially because during the AUs sonic 2 up to sonic adventure arcs he couldnt control his chaos kinesis (thats what i call channeling chaos energy and controlling it) properly and tended to go berserk if he went super/hyper (aka fleetway super). only after sonic adventure and interacting with tikal and also chaos and the fate of the world weighing on sonics shoulders did he manage to finally get his shit together and go normal super without trying to kill everyone :D post SA1 sonic and xilog get along a lot better cause sonic isnt as immature anymore and doesnt need to be babysat whenever he goes super lol. i mean sonic is still kinda an asshole sometimes and generally pretty unlikable (going by his SA1 characterisation mostly cause im a sucker for SA1 haha) but yknow at least he doesnt give xiggy a ton of work anymore

the hyper thing i mentioned is basically sonic going from demi god to full god at some point in the AU and shedding his mortal body so to say he kinda has something similar to dazzle going on where he can appear "more normal" and not be the light at all times but he is constantly invincible and immortal like the rest of the chaos gods once that happens. which is like hundreds of years in the future...

Hi yago! I read your tags! And I just wanted to take a moment to say: it is good that you're drawing things you both like and don't like! I know it's a bit discouraging, especially when you want to make weirder or more cartoony things, but part of building your art style is finding out what you dislike, just as much as finding out what you do like.

I love seeing your experiments. I love seeing how other artists think, and grapple with shapes and expressions and points of view. I realized recently I don't sketch very often? I don't draw a lot just for the sake of playing around. I normally draw as a means to a larger piece, and watching your sketches always makes me want to try to sketch more often myself.

Goodness, this turned into a ramble. Whoops.

In short: I'm sorry you're struggling with your art style! But I love seeing your thoughts, and I think your thoughts are stepping stones to something greater. I hope you continue having fun experimenting, and playing around with your art.

and i very much agree with everything you said. it's not a bad thing if you like some drawings less than the other, every one of them still helps to move you forward in way. even though it sucks when a drawing is not as cool as you hoped it would be x) we learn from our mistakes and stuff! not that a bad drawing is a mistake, but you know what i mean. every experience is a learning opportunity! sometimes it just takes a bit of time to realize that you're moving in a different direction. and it takes time to change course as well.

i dont think it's bad that im drawing things more "realistically" or at least with more uhm, normal proportions idk. generally it's a norm for artists to have many different styles they can switch between, and both realistic and cartoony styles are part of me and my skill pool. i just sometimes forget that i can do more than one thing and get hang up on stuff, and it feels like im trapped in one style even though I really am not.

about the sketches actually! yknow i noticed some time ago that i developed a habit of coloring every sketch i do? and it's not a bad thing, but it's certainly odd, and it used to upset me if i couldn't color something, it felt unfinished and not good enough. and I've been slowly trying to break out of this habit and sketch more and try to... loosen up? i guess? maybe to lower my standards or expectations for myself, something like that. it's very hard still but i can say im definitely enjoying drawing a lot more right now!

and im really happy that my sketches make you want to sketch too, i definitely know the feeling of seeing a drawing and just wanting to draw something yourself, so its very flattering :3

I love you all in the SMG4 Tumblr community so much. Y'all are absolutely epic and amazing and so creative and just. chill.

I've always been so nervous about joining set fandoms/fandom communities, cuz usually the community is huge and overwhelming, toxic, scary, crazy, and the idea of being in those communities and interacting with people in those communities and being in there not just to post a dingle fanart from it and dip, but to help be a big part of the community and whatnot sounded... overwhelming.

Then I slowly began getting super hyperfixated on SMG4, much more than I usually am, leading me to post more about it. Fanart, things I notice, goofy theories... more than just me saying a couple things i like about it, posting a fanart, then moving onto something else.

I started kinda just exploring the SMG4 tags and gradually, I began recognizing most of the people in this community more and more -- recognizing art styles, etc. I noticed how small a community it was.

And it was a mostly chill community. I wasn't really seeing much drama or questionable things, maybe some criticisms about the show or theories or whatever, but nobody was at each others throats. Plus, the fan OCs were super neat.

I had begun posting more and more SMG4 content, drawing fanart, their OCs, and the fact people were so just... chill and welcoming about it was so nice. It wasn't nearly as scary -- we are all just vibing here. Most of the artists you look up to will probably see your work, and give it attention too.

It feels super strange to be considered an SMG4 Tumblr artist, having people literally enjoying the things I make and making things for me when they make things for SMG4 fanartists... its honestly super surreal. But so so exciting and euphoric.

Cuz yall are so awesome!! Yall make my day so bright. Yall are the best.

I'll be honest, when I first was slowly being a part of the SMG4 community -- sometime right after summer vacation began -- I had been dealing with some petty but difficult irl person issues.

I don't want to get into it too much, but I had basically messed up in a pretty bad way (enough to make me feel bad the moment I did it, but not enough that we couldn't move on and mature from it), and the people involved were hurt worse than I thought they were, and instead of trying to talk it out they resorted lying about being my friends for months before school ended, and over summer break, tried to cancel one of my Scratch account and drag my followers there into drama that they had no business being in, for the simple reason being "you don't deserve all that fame".

Despite their attempt at trying to cancel me not really working out very well, it very much affected me negatively and made me very very scared about using Scratch again. I still post projects there sometimes, but i felt weird when i do it. I felt like those people were watching my every move, waiting to try and drag me down again. It felt so strange and scary to feel like the people I once cared so deeply about are breathing down my neck, waiting for me to make another wrong move and add it to their proof of why I'm an awful person.

It sucks ass.

The SMG4 community here on Tumblr, despite none of you knowing I was going through anything at all, you all helped a lot. Just existing.

Being a welcoming community that I feel safe to be silly and normal in.

I've never been the best at expressing appreciation, but let me just say:

I think of you all so highly and I never want you to change.

HI I AM BACK! I noticed the first time but after seeing your tag about old art it's made me curious if it's an overall style change or a stylistic choice (also please don't take this negatively I am simply wondering with open arms.)

In some of the art, you draw Sabo's hair really fluffy and wavy, and then in others it's drawn more rigid and pointy, while still trying to look curly? More pointy than the other, I mean.

I went back to look at the sketch you posted earlier and noticed that same effect on Sabo's hair but even more pronounced, to the point where at first glance I would have assumed it was Ace and not Sabo. But you also have a distinct way of doing Ace's hair that is not like that (like Sabo's) so it's left me really curious if drawing Sabo like that is meant as a way to make them more similar (at least more than the fluffy hair was?) Or if it's the result of an art style that's changed over time.

Or! If you don't feel like answering those individually then I would love if you'd give this one a shot when you have time: What is your art process like when drawing Sabo's hair and how does (if it does!) it differ from anyone else you draw?

Julianne is a gift giving and quality time kind of lover. She likes cooking and baking and buying stuff for Sam bc she's scared that anything else wouldn't translate well enough as "love". She's been conditioned to think that. Yknow. Her words are empty and she forgets a lot of things but she doesn't forget her friends' favorite food, flowers, music, etc. She also does her best to engage with their interests bc she feels like shes burdened Everyone with hers. Her needed love lamguage is emotional. To be reassured that she's loving correctly or she's a good person. The jackal in the closet is watching her.

Sam is more of an acts of service and quality time person than anything. She just doesn't feel love as intensely as others in the way its normally felt but it is there. She's consistently making an effort to be reliable and be caring towards people even if it is fake or even if she herself becomes a commodity. She's become detatched from the emotional aspect of love that she can only say she loves you if she uses her hands somewhere. So it's a bit unfair to Julianne when they start dating. She knows Julianne needs emotional support and love but she just can't give it to her as easily bc it will appear fake.

I like to think physical touch is a nice middle ground for them both. I think Sam would be a lot more physical with closer, intimate relationships in a lot more ways. Julianne is Touch Starved. She hasn't been hugged in ages she Needs it. I think it's the thought of Being There that they both want. That it's not empty inside. Plus those two need sleep. Sam works fucking retail. if id been asked rhis question ages ago, i would say that it is definitely easier to draw someone facing left (like 3/4th view). it’s actually easier for me to draw someone facing forward nowadays, but i do struggle less drawing at fairly normal angles ^^

3. What ideas come from when you were little

im not sure how to answer this question… plus my memory is quite bad. when i was little i mainly drew things i liked haha ^^ (sonic for example). ig the original TSM comic is a better example of the ideas i had when i was little? my lengthy explanation is listed below!

for context, TSM (The Shapehead Monsters) is a webcomic i’ve been developing for several years now. the characters can be found here, and my tags for it can be found here and here (<- tag for the 2017 reboot art specifically). TSM takes place an undetermined but very long time into the future, where Earth has surpassed the lifespan of humans. here, humanoid insects known as Shapehead Monsters can be found. the plot follows Susie Square, a temperamental but kind girl on the search for her family’s killer, and her best friend/crush Cecilia Circle, a cool and collected vagabond who has a penchant for getting into tricky situations. as Susie tries to solve her family’s murder, she and Cecilia uncover more about their world than they could have ever imagined.

the above context is true for the current state of TSM, which is vastly different to the original plot of the first TSM comic i did back in 2011 (i dont have pictures on me so you will have to imagine). the 2011 comic didnt even start with susie & cecilia, it was just a sketchpad comic centered around two girls who had a crush on the same guy. from what i remember, they were shapeshifting catgirls? this plot was probably most definitely inspired by anime (i grew up watching keroro gunso lol). the girls (& by extension the guy) didnt have any names iirc. eventually, these girls wage war on each other by creating these fucked up bug creatures (indirect kaiju reference) to kill each other but they end up falling in love. the first shapehead monster (susie) is derived from these two monsters, and then the comic shifts focus to susie & her mishaps at school. tbh these were probably based on how i felt as a weird kid back when i was younger. love triangle never happened tho

susie ALSO gets into a weird love triangle at school (sean & jake who do not exist in proper TSM canon LOL) & also has like an evil twin at some point named winter (for some reason i renamed susie to summer here but then went back to susie later unprompted)??? it was really fuckinf weird. i was just fucking around drawing these little bug things back then. i mean i still am LOL but yknow. i think i got the whole shapehead thing from the sketchpad itself, it had a geometric square pattern n i just saw that & went with it.

by the way, the 2017 "reboot" as i call it was supposed to be a reboot of the og 2011 comic, except the original plot was the plot of a show that susie & cecilia were acting in (it was supposed to be a rom-com in which they fall in love despite playing each other's rival in the show). i honestly don't know where this came from, but by 2020 i had rehauled the entire thing & came up with a proper starting narrative ^^
