here's an explanation of the term "pien kei", aka 「ぴえん系女子」

"pien kei" is a more umbrella term than similarly trending terms for types of people- there are some online who consider jirai kei and ryousangata to be under the pien kei umbrella.

pien girls (anyone can be pien kei, but ill be saying pien girl because that seems to be most common as far as phrases go) are mentally unstable, much like jirai kei girls. however, the exact traits aren't the same entirely as those two. That being said, you can definitely have overlap- some jirai kei, menhera, and ryousangata girls are pien kei, and some arent!

So what are the traits of a pien kei jyoshi? Well, like I said, she's overall unstable. The term "pien" refers to 🥺 this emoji, and the sadness and loneliness it conveys. The name for pien kei came from the fact that pien girls tend to use that term and emoticon a lot, and feel sad and lonely. Pien girls threaten, think about, or attempt self harm or suicide at what seems like minor issues to others. They're also typically the type to act or consider themselves fragile, and sometimes use makeup to convey that more outwardly. Pien girls are also said to be more prone to crying, venting, or "complaining" about things others may deem small. Most pien girls are also very insecure, codependent, and desperate for attention and approval.

A lot of pien kei girls alleged traits are also associated with ryousangata girls- obsessive devotion, parasocial relationships with idols, hosts, etc, and trying desperately to fit in and be considered pretty. It's also common for pien girls to work in Kabukicho, or in related SW fields. However, those things arent required to be pien kei.
