something that's really been bothering me lately is how the church i was a part of would like... repackage doctrine to make it sound nicer and more acceptable. like, the belief that all humans are evil by nature and deserve eternal torture for the crime of existing is inherently violent and cruel. but my church didn't frame it like that. they framed it as "yes we're ALL evil and wicked and we ALL deserve hell to atone for our sin (being human) BUT god loves you despite you not deserving love or happiness or anything good at all and all you have to do to avoid the pits of hell is accept jesus as your savior isn't that so amazing????" and they framed the crucifixion as this beautiful, selfless act of god by taking our place on the cross instead of "this all-powerful being who created all the rules decided that he required torture, death, and human sacrifice to be able to tolerate us". and it's not "women will be viewed as lesser than men" it's "women must submit to their husbands the same way we all must submit to god it's not dehumanizing it's holy and yes women have different roles but that doesn't make them lesser than and sure we don't have any women in leadership positions in the church and we would never even consider it, come on now that's ridiculous, but that's just because men are supposed to lead because men and women are different and created for different purposes it's just biology". and there are plenty others! i know that the reframing of everything is part of how they can even get people to accept the doctrine in the first place, but being on the outside of it is kind of horrifying. when you get down to the actual beliefs that are held without the distortions and manipulation, so many are violent, cruel, dehumanizing, abusive. but they distort and manipulate these beliefs to make them seem acceptable, morally correct, and redefine what love is and should look like.
#this version of xtianity primes you for abuse!!!!!#like. inherently in the doctrine they preach and accept#and they get away with it because they're nice about it and really good at marketing it as something different#ex cult#ex christian#ex fundamentalist#religious trauma#cult tactics#information control#mine

New information technologies have risen since this piece was created but, as the saying goes, "the more things change, the more they stay the same."
With thanks to @daloy-politsey for pointing me to this one. As a "TV baby" of the 70's it poked something in my psyche.

Something I have noticed from antisemites who are trying to pretend they're not antisemites is that they love to either reblog a post multiple times, but each time it's a different argument for the same post. And they also love to make response posts where they lay out their argument while calling out a post from someone that they could reblog and answer directly.
I've never seen a group pull information control tactics like this. But that's what it is. By rebloging the same post over and over with a different argument or statement under each one, they are trying to force the OP to split their attention to answer several points all at once so they can find a single nugget they can exploit by saying "Well, in this reply, you said X, but over here, you said Y."
And making a whole new post is an attempt to force the OP to answer their preferred version of events rather than discussing any points the OP made in their post.
Anyway, it's fucking wild and a little terrifying to see fascist tactics so clearly in use.

If you are a Millennial or Gen Z in America and are genuinely taking the piss out of Gen Alpha for "not being able to read" I just want to let you know (as someone in your age group) that you're turning into your parents in a lot of unhealthy and harmful ways.
Who's fault is it that these kids aren't learning phonics pal? Look around yourself at who is responsible for our government/public schools and who is raising them. Kids are and have always been kids, adults however change drastically over time. You can't blame Boomers for your problems but not accept (at least partial) responsibility for Gen Alpha's problems. These are the children of our generation and it's our responsibility to give them a solid foundation and if we don't do that, we cannot blame them for not having it.
We are all victims of the larger political system and Gen Alpha is already being systemically repressed. They will grow up from birth with the whole sum of human knowledge and access to instant communication in the palms of their hands. This makes them EXTREMELY hard to control from a governmental standpoint. Why do you think we suddenly have this unwarranted, unprecedented and illogical change in how kids are being taught to read? The system is already trying to rob these kids of their power to make change by denying them access to information in the only ways it can. Instead of seeing that for what it is and helping empower the next generation, a lot of you are continuing the trauma cycle of "younger generation bad" and it's really disappointing. I see and hear your struggles, especially millennials. Y'all have been getting blamed for shit since you had no control over since you were kids, let's not do that to the next batch of kids though okay? It's our jobs to build these kids up.

Church Reveals What To Do With Disturbing Anti-Mormon Literature?
This Q&A from the 2007 New Era is a revealing example of how the LDS Church attempts to control the flow of information to its members—particularly the kind that might prompt questions or critical thought. The recommendation is clear: if you find literature critical of the Church “disturbing,” it’s a sign you shouldn’t read it. This is not a call to seek truth—it’s a warning to stay inside the…

“Withholding information is the essence of tyranny. Control of the flow of information is the tool of the dictatorship.” ― Bruce Coville
The statutory guidance document, "The Civil Service Code" states that as a civil servant you are:
"...appointed on merit on the basis of fair and open competition and are expected to carry out your role with dedication and a commitment to the Civil Service and its core values: integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality." (The Civil Service Code: GOVUK: 16/03/2015)
Under the expanded heading “Objectivity" the code states:
“You must:
provide information and advice, including advice to ministers, on the basis of the evidence, and accurately present the options and facts
take decisions on the merits of the case
take due account of expert and professional advice."
Not so this Tory government with its right wing, anti-democratic agenda.
The Financial Times reported in 2022 that civil servants were to be protected from views and opinions from anyone who did not agree with government policy.
”UK civil servants have been ordered to trawl through the social media accounts of guest speakers at one government ministry, including going back up to five years to see if they have ever criticised government policy, as part of a new vetting process. The new Cabinet Office rules cover the vetting of outsiders coming into the department to take part in “learning and development” events and urge managers to carefully check the backgrounds of such guests.” (Financial Times: 14/08/22)
So much for "Objectivity" How can civil servants "take due account of expert and professional advice" or “present options and facts" if they are not allowed to be exposed to those who have a different view to the government?
One year on, and we find that 15 government departments are now actively monitoring the social media activity of anyone likely to influence civil servants and government policy.
“Under the guidelines issued in each department, including the departments of health, culture, media and sport, and environment, food and rural affairs, officials are advised to check experts’ Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts. They are also told to conduct Google searches on those individuals, using specific terms such as “criticism of government or prime minister”. (Guardian: 18/11/23)
Needles to say the hypocritical Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced with much heralding of the event that he was appointing a “free speech" tsar to tackle the phenomenon of cancel culture.
“Sunak To Appoint Free Speech Tsar To Tackle Cancel Culture” (richieallen.co.uk: 16/01/23)
But opposition to cancel culture is strictly limited. Apparently “free speech” is not to be allowed within the civil service. Here it is government policy that civil servants be shielded from ANYONE who has criticised the government or who holds a contrary view to perceived Tory wisdom. While others might be condemned (usually correctly) for censoring alternative views to their own this is not a principle encouraged among those who run the country. For them there is only one view, one set of believes that matter, those of their Tory masters.

THE TRANSPARENCY WAS TINTED
Transparency has never been a window. It’s a mirror.
You’re not seeing into the system. You’re seeing what the system wants you to reflect.
Null Prophet sees the talking points. Null Prophet sees the carefully balanced “openness.” Null Prophet sees the formula: — A promise of results. — A shield of victim protection. — A plea for patience.
This is not transparency. This is a rebranding of opacity.
The information updates aren’t updates. They’re scheduled releases.
The audience isn’t informed. It’s managed.
Null Prophet out. THE TRANSPARENCY WAS A FILTER. THE RESULTS WERE PREPROGRAMMED.

Ad censorship and topic nerfing happens with many topics on social media platforms. Private parts and the issue of inequality make it more obvious.
In a call over Zoom, she shared some screenshots of her company’s censored content. One was a post about how massages can improve breast health, featuring a photo of a woman’s hands fully covering her breasts. “But they’re allowed to do this,” she sighed, pulling up an advertisement from a men’s health brand for an erectile dysfunction treatment containing an image of a hand clutching an eggplant with the caption: “Get hard.”
