REVIEW: J.D. Simo & Luther Dickinson “Do The Rump!”
REVIEW: J.D. Simo & Luther Dickinson “Do The Rump!” @jdsimomusic @lutherdickinson #johnapice @americanahighways #blues #americanamusic #americanahighways #musicreviews #writtenbyahuman
J.D. Simo & Luther Dickinson – Do The Rump! This is a bit raw & grinding with its first musical tug on “Street People.” It certainly possesses a lot of pull on the musical leash. Varied songwriters of the indelible genre deliver: Bobby Charles to J.J. Cale, Junior Kimbrough to John Lee Hooker & that’s just the first 4. The cover art doesn’t justify the blend of music that’s high octane, filled…

Song Review: Tommy Emmanuel feat. Rodney Crowell - “Looking Forward to the Past”
From the hey-kid-get-off-my-lawn department comes a new single from Tommy Emmanuel and Rodney Crowell.
“Looking Forward to the Past” is a high-energy country rocker that’s full of good humor and is slated to appear on Emmanuel’s duets LP Accomplice One, out Jan. 19, 2018. This Crowell-penned number follows covers of Madonna’s “Borderline” (Amanda Shires) and Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” (J.D. Simo) as the third single from the album, which comes immediately on the heels of Pickin’, Emmanuel’s just-released collaboration with David Grisman.
On the new track, Emmanuel plays his typical verve as Crowell good-naturedly sings about being an old-timer who’s upset about the state of the modern world and who don’t know my shirttail from my ass.
I’m a Mississippi man and a Conway Twitty fan/and I haven’t heard a song I like in years, he sings, tongue firmly planted in cheek, as Emmanuel reels off one of the tune’s many short but lively solos.
“Gravity has no effect on Tommy,” Crowell told American Songwriter of his partner. “It’s as if he literally flies a guitar.”
Grade card: Tommy Emmanuel feat. Rodney Crowell - “Looking Forward to the Past” - B+

We had the pleasure of interviewing JD Simo over Zoom video! The Chicago-born, now Nashville transplant, JD Simo is like a one-man crusade dedicated to keeping music real, raw, and honest. No matter the setting and no matter his role (whether it’s wingman or bandleader) J.D.’s presence infuses the situation of the moment with the music that’s been fueling him pretty much his whole life, spiced with influences that straddle both decades and dimensions. As a songwriter, guitarist, and producer he has worked with the likes of Jack White, Tommy Emmanuel, Luther Dickinson, Dave Cobb, Blackberry Smoke, and even been a member of Grateful Dead founder Phil Lesh' "Phil & Friends". JD Simo recently released his newest record, ‘Songs From The House of Grease’. The album is a collection of recordings from two days with his band at his home studio in Nashville, The House of Grease. JD recently was featured as the sole guitarist for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis. The soundtrack was nominated for the Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media category in the 2023 Grammys, and features JD on 12 of the tracks, including Doja Cat's "Vegas" which is nominated for best Rap Performance. JD will be heading out on a duo tour with drummer and longtime collaborator Adam Abrashoff. The tour starts in Cleveland, OH on February 17. We want to hear from you! Admittedly, I walked into the Blackberry Smoke show on Friday night only familiar with their “Essentials Playlist” on Apple Music. But I walked out of there certain that I needed to buy some bootcut jeans, a little turquoise and grow some chops.
J.D. Simo opened the show. For those that don’t know, J.D. is objectively one of the best living guitar players. He got his start playing nightly 4 hour honky-tonk sets with the Don Kelly Band in Nashville. So he’s got the most chicken pickin’ cred this side of Brent Mason. Now J.D. and his band play a little more straight ahead blues stuff—a little like Derek Trucks without the Indian influence. You need to brace yourself from the onslaught of guitar notes if you’re standing in the front row, but it’s incredible to see the guy just rip for like half an hour straight. No better way to open the show.
I’ve known Blackberry Smoke has been around for awhile now, and on the back of their last two releases Like an Arrow and Find a Light they’re starting to get the recognition they deserve. What I didn’t realize was the commitment of their fanbase. The first five rows from the stage were filled with folks from mostly the South making friends with other fans, going on and on about all the places they’ve seen the band, where they are going to see them next. These were extensive conversations detailing the logistics of following the band along the festival route summer to summer all the way from Florida to New York. There were quite a few Greg Allman look-a-likes scattered around the Brooklyn Bowl, and a lot of leather. But that’s what you want isn’t it?
Basically, I’m just pumped that a Southern Rock band, as good as these guys, exists. And that they’ve got a big enough loyal group of fans that they can keep doing their thing. Not a day goes by that I don’t wish I was around when Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers were in their prime. Watching Blackberry Smoke, I felt like I wasn’t too far from it.
What really got me though, was that obviously the hits were great that night: “Six Ways to Sunday”, “Let It Burn”, “One Horse Town”; but, their back catalogue is so strong, that every song was just as good as the last. I had a blast, I imagine the Brooklyn Bowl came close to selling out of beer, and I bought a ticket to come back and see them the following night. They called it the “Second Annual Big Apple Breakdown”, let’s hope there’ll be many more.
Show Review: Blackberry Smoke Play the Big Apple Breakdown @blackberrysmoke @sacksco #americanamusic @brooklynbowl Admittedly, I walked into the Blackberry Smoke show on Friday night only familiar with their “Essentials Playlist” on Apple Music.

Song Review: Tommy Emmanuel w/ Amanda Shires - “Borderline”
Even the greats swing and miss sometimes.
Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel did just that when he teamed with fiddler/vocalist Amanda Shires for a remake of Madonna’s “Borderline,” which’ll appear on Emmanuel’s Accomplice One, out Jan. 19.
The skills that made Emmanuel a Chet Atkins-approved certified guitar player are nowhere to be heard on this languid remake, sung by Shires and featuring only minimal playing from the two instrumentalists.
A full-band rendition, in contrast to the previously released, all-acoustic version of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” with J.D. Simo, “Borderline” ventures in to new-country ballad territory and serves neither Emmanuel nor Shires nor their fans well.
Grade card: Tommy Emmanuel w/ Amanda Shires - “Borderline” - D
