J. K. Rowling vs David Tennant: where is the truth and where the lies?

Probably everyone have read something about an unpopular opinion posted by J. K. Rowling on Twitter (cough, I mean X), where she decided to go after David Tennant. She claimed that during an interview Tennant was talking about whinging f**kers who need to just shut up. These whinging f**kers who he is referring to are women who’s rights are being oppressed, according to J. K. Rowling.

Unfortunately, Tennant didn't say anything against oppressed and abused women. Actually, Rowling is *again* pursuing her personal crusade claiming female-only = no trans-women. Tennant, after accepting an award, took the microphone and gave a speech about the state of LGBTQ+ rights in the UK, and the sad need for awards like the one he received (he was honored at the British LGBT Awards with Celebrity Ally award).

During the speech, Tennant also targeted UK Minister for Women and Equalities, Kemi Badenoch, who had previously said she would exclude trans-women from single-sex areas. Tennant said:

“I suppose if I’m honest I’m a little depressed by the fact that acknowledging that everyone has the right to be who they want to be and live their life how they want to live it as long as they’re not hurting anyone else should merit any kind of special or award or special mention because it’s common sense, isn’t it?” Tennant said in his speech. “It’s human decency. We shouldn’t live in a world where that is worth remarking on. However until we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn’t exist anymore — I don’t wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up — whilst we do live in this world I am honoured to receive this.”

Tennant’s speech started a war of words with Badenoch, who later took to social media to say she would not shut up as the actor suggested. She went on to call Tennant “a rich, lefty, white male celebrity so blinded by ideology he can’t see the optics of attacking the only Black woman in government by calling publicly for my existence to end.”

Which, again, is a... Ehm... Lie, since Tennant didn't attack Minister Badenoch for her ethnicity or threatened her life. Tennant speech was critical of her position regarding trans rights and not her personal life. Tennant was calling out government bigots for their political opinions regarding social issues and not attacking anyone on personal basis and NEVER - NEVER said anything about institutional racism (which Minister Badenoch herself claimed it's not a problem in UK) and violence against women (both cis and trans) not being major problems.

In a separate red carpet interview on the awards ceremony, Tennant was asked to say something to the trans youth. He responded to don't feel judged or unloved, because transphobic politicians are just a little minority: “It's a tiny bunch of little whinging f**kers who are on the wrong side of history, and they’ll all go away soon.”

Rowling and conservative politicians are strumentalizing LGBTQ+ awareness contents to make the community and it's allies look like evil terrorists (“gender Taliban”) and therefore pursuing their anti-trans goals while also belittling abuse perpetrated on women in religious states and systemic racism. Since violence against women is overwhelmingly committed by cisgender men, why are the Tories blaming LGBTQ+ community and it's allies?

Gal Gadot isn't a bad actress anymore than JK Rowling is a bad writer. Like it or not, she is the definitive Wonder Woman. Shut up, yes she is. You can meme "Kal-El, no" all you want, but it's very telling that you have to mock that one throwaway line in isolation. That's all you have, because she gave an earnest and nuanced performance in the 2017 film that still holds up as the gold standard for portrayals of the character. In the same vein as "he's not Batman if you can't imagine him comforting a frightened child," she's not Wonder Woman if you can't imagine her fawning over a baby. Gadot perfectly embodied the combination of stoic regalness and warm compassion that is Diana. It was one of those iconic portrayals of a comicbook character that stick in my head on an almost subconscious level. Every time I read a Wonder Woman comic, I always hear her voice. She is to Wonder Woman what Mark Hamill is to the Joker and what Kevin Conroy was to Batman.

It has not escaped my notice that the numerous Gal Gadot "bad acting" compilations never show clips from the first Wonder Woman movie. It's always the aforementioned "Kal-El, no" line from the clunky mess that was Justice Leage, a scene of her yelling through a windshield at Pedro Pascal in the panned Wonder Woman sequel, a silly line from Death on the Nile and, most recently, clips from the notoriously awful Snow White remake.

Is she really a bad actor if you have to nitpick three throwaway lines from two bad movies and one movie no one watched? I know you didn't watch Death on the Nile. That clip was in the trailer. Are we really back to blaming actresses when a movie is bad? Have we learned nothing from Kristen Stewart?

You don't have to like her or ever support a movie with her in it again, but it is childish and reactionary to retroactively decide everything a problematic person ever did was garbage, even if it was near-universally praised at the time. Bad politics =/= bad acting/writing. You liked Harry Potter when you were ten, and you liked Wonder Woman when you saw it in 2017. I remember your tumblr posts.

Also, I'm probably not supposed to say this, but her politics aren't even that bad. She seems to be a very centre liberal two state solution type, always acknowledging Palestinians in her appeals to peace. She only served the IDF in a civilian capacity as a fitness instructor and has condemned their killing of Palestinian civilians. Bare minimum, for sure, but the fact that she's even acknowledging that these atrocities have taken place is more than what most Zionist-leaning celebrities are doing. It certainly landed her in some hot water in Israel, where even the mildest criticism of the IDF is viewed as basically treason.

I obviously don't agree with her politics as a member of team river to the sea, but she is decidedly NOT calling for genocide. We need to know who the actual enemies are and not waste our time barking up the wrong trees. You aren't being woke by screaming about problematic celebrities. You are being distracted.

Some posts ago you mentioned something about not supporting JK Rowling, because of her transphobia.

I've heard the argument about not giving her money to spread her hate numerous times, but which organisations is she supporting that cause such harm? (I've read something about influencing the UK bill that passed but also having connections /influence to the US radfem /tradfem movement). But I can't find any sources on that.

Is this the problem you have with her (supporting hateful organisations if that is true) or just her general stance and posts?

I've said it for years and I'll say it again... JKR will do anything to stay "relevant" even if it's burn herself to the ground. Now mind you, she is still laughing all the way to the bank bc people still buy her merch and shit which is beyond me... but she is so desperate to have her name in the media she'll say or do anything. 2. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are extremely well-liked. A lot of people are more attached to them in their roles as they are to the actual characters in the books.

So I’ve just come back from browsing a tumblr search for “jk rowling” out of idle curiosity (whether it’s actually true that she hasn’t tweeted anything since her online harassment of Imane Khelif—and fun fact, as far as I can tell, that’s still true!)

But in doing so, I found bot post after bot post of utter nonsense tagged as “i stand with jk rowling” with related tags, including “radfem” and “lgb”:

Okay, I’m gonna stop you right there and ask you to take a step back. JK Rowling has been confirmed to be a terf, racist, and general horrible human being for a long time now. Trying to “um actually” me in a post that was encouraging the fandom to keep making what they like and ignoring the creator by making everyone of her hated tropes fanon is not helping anyone or yourself.

I’m of the opinion that drarry functions as a ship so long as Draco himself gets the character development he so obviously was deprived of. (I’m also of the opinion that that CD needs to be beaten into his skull brutally before his true self can even come out but I digress)

To reiterate my point for people who seem to ignore it: JK Rowling hates drarry not because it’s “not healthy” but because of what it represents, which is a legitimate gay relationship between her protagonist and a character she beat into the ground.

Flawed characters are interesting because they are flawed.

A relationship is interesting in a story because of the potential that it brings to the story.

So again: make your trans characters, make your poc Harry and Hermione, make your marauders drip the rainbow (forgot to include them last time whoops), because the garbage human being who made our childhoods is mad about it.
