Begin Again
I have had this in my drafts for 16 months. Regardless of writing it is an important song in Haylor lore and one I love so it took time. Taylor has said she started Begin Again in March 2011, that takes out every public theory for who the 'nice guy is'. Personally I hear it as Harry, but granted it is started long before they were seen at the Kids Choice.
The music video
I'll start by saying the video is directed by the same person as Everything Has Changed (released later 6 June 2013), which has footage of Paris in the classroom scene. For any other Taylor ship, especially if she was dating the guy at the time, I could say so they are about about the same person. The end. But the rules are different for Haylor so settle in for 1000+ more words.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Begin Again video was shot in Paris on 30 September 2012 and released 23 October 2012 - that is a crazy turn around for a Taylor video. Taylor's schedule (see 2012) was packed for Red's release too, she had a fan event in Nashville on the 29th and press in London on the 5th October. But she still crammed in this video for a slow song as a second lead single. Harry randomly appeared in LA on the 1st October then both in London. The first photo of them together was on the 7th October. So just as Haylor started dating begin again became what seemed a late decision single.
On the video, the black version of Harry's car in 2012 is in it:

And the Begin Again & Willow similarity:

Paris
Paris is special to both Harry and Taylor. Taylor has this weird quote from Pop Crush where it reads like she didn't finish a sentence, "it's just the city...???"
“Like, a love letter to Paris. ’Cause it’s just the city and this story line of somebody moving on and finding yourself again. … I think we’ve all had that day where we just decide to wander around and think about things.”
In 2022 the video Director said it was set in Paris because his wife was due to have their baby. OK... but why that director if the video was shot in a 4 day weekend gap for release in 4 weeks time.
And Taylor has made Paris the whole aesthetic of the song, she performed it in Paris, at the CMA awards she also gave it a French intro and set and it is the taymoji set, except for "I Can Fly!" A reference to CBBH and of course a later Harry 1D song. Again, this is enough for other ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When was it written
To People Country in December 2012 Taylor said:
The first inspiration came in the European leg of the Speak Now tour (that’s March 2011)
She picked it up and put it down several times, it took a long time to write, and
The muse is a composite character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The European leg of Speak Now was short:
March 6 - 12, 2011 Belgium, Netherlands, Oslo and Germany
March 15, 2011 Milan Italy (she wrote a song)
On 16 March she visited Neuschwanstein Castle which later appeared in the Bejewelled Music Video. She wrote about this and said "my life is so beautiful right now" arriving in Paris in the Lover Journal.
March 17, 2011 Paris France, the first time she played the Soul Sister mash up.
March 19, 2011 Madrid Spain, and
March 22 - 30, 2011 England & Ireland. This included Wednesday 23 March when she wore a white dress and high heels, later that day she played a Radio 2 concert at Abbey Rd which included the mash up of Soul Sister with Fearless. Harry was also in London.
Said she wrote songs in Milan and Ireland. 8 months before March 2011 is when she broke up with John Mayer. She dated Jake for 7 weeks ending in December, only 3 months before she started Begin Again.
Taylor has spoken about Begin Again a few times, on 17 October 2012 at the VH1 Story Tellers event she said it is about being yourself after a break up. She is incredibly hesitant talking about it in the Red Track by Track (11 mins below) she says it is about a first date after a bad break up and being open to being OK:
youtube
However she has also said she put the song down and picked it up several times. It is about recovering from a relationship with someone who is withholding and makes her feel less than. In the lead up to Red's release Taylor Nation shared this throw back of Taylor recording in Bluebird Studios Nashville, which is where Begin Again, Red & Starlight were recorded. It is generally though she is playing Begin Again here because she is playing Cadd9 chord which features in Begin Again. With her fringe cut and being in Nashville means this was likely taken around her birthday when she posted this photo of red shoes. As we know it was started 9 months sooner this was recording or work on it (and Red). Red and Begin Again also have the same credits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
March 2011
Harry was in England when the Speak Now Tour was in Europe. Taylor also started playing Harry's X-factor audition song in the Paris show onward. They also both played the O2 the same week. I'll leave this there, but have a post on that.
Lyrics
Took a deep breath in the mirror He didn't like it when I wore high heels But I do
Taylor highlighted the high heels in the People Country post and told a story of going to meet friends and deciding to wear heels. The heels may be literal, Jake is short, however I think real or not they are a metaphor for feeling she is allowed to not make herself smaller. After dating older guys who put her down she’s standing tall.
Turn the lock and put my headphones on He always said he didn't get this song But I do, I do
I love the put my headphones on, it continues the story of getting to walk out to see friends on her own, and the metaphor holds for shutting out her ex’s negative thoughts. Love. A nice call back to WANGBT’s line about indie record.
Walked in expecting you'd be late But you got here early and you stand and swave I walk to you
This line reminds me of Harry, he’s known for his manners. Her expectations have been lowered by previous disappointments, she expects tardiness or indifference. But the new person surprises her by being present and kind. It’s a soft, healing contrast.
You pull my chair out and help me in And you don't know how nice that is But I do
Simple gestures chivalrous, thoughtful take on deep meaning because they were absent in the past. The line “you don’t know how nice that is” reminds me of the dinner scene in the ATW10MV
And you throw your head back laughing Like a little kid I think it's strange that you think I'm funny, 'cause He never did
This laugh line also brings Harry to mind. This moment is disarming and tender. Laughter, especially childlike laughter, represents trust and ease. She’s startled by the idea that someone might genuinely enjoy her company. There’s a quiet mourning in the comparison, but also awe.
I've been spending the last eight months Thinking all love ever does Is break and burn, and end But on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again
8 months before March 2011 is June 2010, the guy that broke and burned love is John Mayer.
This chorus is the emotional heart of the song. The phrase “break and burn, and end” is weary, rhythmic, almost ritualistic, like she’s repeated it to herself many times. The final line simple and small marks a shift. Love doesn’t return in fanfare, but in quiet moments over coffee. It begins again with stillness and care.
You said you never met one girl who had As many James Taylor records as you But I do
Now they’re finding shared ground music again, this time not a point of tension, but connection. James Taylor is gentle, classic, nostalgic perfectly fitting the tone of new beginnings.
Harry likes James Taylor too, in 2015 he tweeted James Taylor Lyrics to Mexico:
Tumblr media
We tell stories and you don't know why I'm coming off a little shy But I do
I feel like the Two Ghosts line “Telling those stories we already told” is a call back to this.
She’s emotionally guarded, and he doesn’t yet realize why. This verse suggests she hasn’t told him about the heartbreak but she carries it. “But I do” is now tinged with quiet sadness and vulnerability.
And we walked down the block, to my car And I almost brought him up
This part of the video has Harry’s car in white, and..
But you start to talk about the movies That your family watches every single Christmas And I want to talk about that
This part also makes me think of Harry, she recorded part of the song on her birthday just before Christmas.
And for the first time What's past is past
The song is not really about getting over the not nice guy more than the nice guy, the end is finally being OK with moving on.

In a cozy café in Amsterdam, with plush sofas and warm lighting, a group of people sit around talking, laughing, and playing board games. But something noticeable is missing. There is not a single phone in sight. It's one of a regular series of community events held by the burgeoning Offline Club, where members pay around $8.00 to leave their phone in a lock box at the door and spend the next few hours unplugged. Demand is growing rapidly. What started as a local initiative is quickly turning into a global movement with regular events hosted in cafés, churches, and town halls selling out fast across the UK, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
2025 marks the turning point when people will try to spend less time on screens and to reclaim meaningful in-person connections.
Yondr, founded in the US, partners with comedy clubs, arenas, clubs, and schools to organize phone-free events. Jack White, Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, John Mayer, Madonna, and Adele have all implemented cell phone bans at their concerts so they could stop looking out at a sea of blinking smartphones, and to help the audience to connect by disconnecting.
Meetup, the global platform that enables over 60 million people to use the internet to get off the internet and meet up in the real world, had a 19 percent rise in registrations in 2023. The latest Meetup Measurement Report showed that the number one reason people use the platform is to find meaningful connections in person, a 50 percent rise over previous years. “Friends” is the most popular search term for events, and “Book Club” is back in the top 10.
We are reaching toward things that knit us back into the social fabric of local life. According to new research in the UK from the National Lottery Community Fund, half of UK adults intend to participate in local volunteering activities, both formally and informally in 2024. Over 70 percent say it's important to them to feel part of their local community.
The growing demand for real-world interactions is emerging from a confluence of societal challenges, namely the increasing awareness of the adverse effects of spending way too much time on screens, and the loneliness epidemic. Recent research by Gallup showed that 80 percent of young people under the age of 18 report feeling lonely, with 22 percent saying they have no real friends. Zero. Twelve percent of adults admitted to having no close friends in 2021, compared to just 3 percent 30 years ago. In these stats is a collective cry of loneliness. People don't just want followers anymore; they want real friendships.
But 2025 could mark the turning point of this deep friendship recession. It is the year when a rising number of people swap screen time for real-world interactions.
Today, there is a deep sense of loss or longing, across generations, for a time before constant connectivity, apps, and algorithms. That sentiment is called anemoia, the nostalgia for a time or a place one has never known.
Take the recent rise in popularity of vinyl records, Polaroid cameras, board games, and even mixtapes. According to the Recording Industry Association of American, 43.2 million EPs/LPs were sold last year, up from less than a million in 2006. From classic card games to board sets such as Monopoly and Cluedo, the compound annual growth for the board gaming market is over 9 percent. The Polaroid market is expected to double over the next seven years from $2.93 billion in 2024 to over $5.72 billion in 2031. Or the surprising resurgence of independent booksellers enjoying their sixth consecutive year of growth—a revival meeting the demand for real recommendations from real people. As of 2023, there are 2,185 independent bookstores in the United States and 1,072 in the UK.
There is a clear pining for a pre-dating-app era, with younger generations moving away from the endless swiping and “ghosting.” According to the 2023 Statista survey, millennials make up 61 percent of dating app users, whereas Gen-Z comes in at only 26 percent. Dating apps like Bumble have introduced local IRL events, including tennis tournaments, cooking or spin classes, and cocktail nights, marketed on the promise to “meet up, chat, and make moves in person.”
2025 is when people start to reclaim the communal experiences and deeper connections that have been lost in our lives. It marks a critical societal turning point where people prioritize real-world connections over the deluge we face on our digital devices. To reconnect by disconnecting.

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – Some of the biggest names in pop, rock and country are coming together to raise funds for victims of the Palisades and Eaton wildfires and assist with the recovery.
A benefit concert, FireAid, will take place on Jan. 30 on two stages, one at Intuit Dome and the other at The Kia Forum, organizers announced on Thursday.
More than 15 music acts have been announced so far, including Billie Eilish and Finneas, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gracie Abrams, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Jelly Roll, Joni Mitchell, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lil Baby, P!nk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rod Stewart, Sting, Stephen Stills, Stevie Nicks, Tate McRae, and performing together for the first time, Dave Matthews and John Mayer.
Additional artists will be announced in the coming days.
This special event is being produced by Shelli, Irving, and the Azoff family in conjunction with Live Nation and AEG Presents. Proceeds will be directed to a new nonprofit that supports displaced families, helps rebuild infrastructure, and improves fire prevention technologies and strategies to ensure Los Angeles is better prepared for wildfires in the future.
Tickets go on sale Wednesday, January 22. Tap here for FireAid ticket information.
Tumblr media
Fans across the globe will be able to make contributions to the cause, as FireAid will be broadcast and streamed live on Apple Music and the Apple TV app, Max, iHeartRadio, KTLA+, Netflix/Tudom, Paramount+, Prime Video and the Amazon Music Channel on Twitch, SiriusXM, exclusively on “LIFE with John Mayer,” Spotify, SoundCloud, Veeps, and YouTube, and at select AMC Theatre locations in 70 US markets. iHeartRadio will serve as the national audio partner to FireAid, using its more than 860 radio stations, its digital platforms and the iHeartRadio app.
KTLA is a broadcast and streaming partner of FireAid. KTLA Vice President and General Manager Janene Drafs said the station reached out to its partners at Intuit Dome in the early stages of planning for the concert to see how we could help.
“They immediately welcomed KTLA into the conversation. From the beginning, they knew this concert needed to be about more than just the music; it also had to share the stories of the personal loss and of the heroic efforts of our First Responders,” said Drafs. “As a local news organization, we are both humbled and honored to provide footage from the fire lines and share some of the significant stories we have reported with the organizers of FireAid.  Those images captured by KTLA will be integrated into this unprecedented streaming event.”

Rising country artist Nick Cain unveils his latest single, “That’s What The Whiskey’s For.” The track blends the heartfelt storytelling of country music with the raw energy of classic bar jukebox rock, offering a relatable respite from life’s daily stresses. “That’s What The Whiskey’s For” is now available to stream and download on all major platforms. “That’s What The Whiskey’s For” is a feel-good country anthem meant to lift spirits and spark a connection, featuring Nick Cain’s gritty vocals and soaring, twangy guitars. Written by Nick Cain, Zac Maloy (member of hit songwriting team 4 Horsemen Music), and Drew Lawrence, the single was recorded at Gnome Recording Studios in Nashville under the expert guidance of Grammy-winning producer Brandon Bell (Joni Mitchell, Zac Brown Band, Brandi Carlile, Dierks Bentley). Featuring Nashville’s top musicians—including Academy of Country Music’s 2023 Acoustic Guitar Player of the Year Tim Galloway (Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Little Big Town) and Shaun Richardson (Béla Fleck) on guitars, Phil Anthony on bass, and Drew Lawrence on keys—the song captures the vibrant, dynamic sound that has become Cain’s hallmark. “This song was really just meant to be a fun tune about taking a pause from the stress of real life,” Cain explains. “It’s one I truly enjoy performing live—it’s uplifting and easy for people to connect with.” Nick Cain’s music is deeply rooted in personal experience, self-discovery, and authenticity, reflecting the multi-faceted journey of his life. At 39 years old, after attending the Watershed Music Festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre, Cain felt a spark of inspiration that changed the course of his life. Armed with a guitar and determination, he began writing songs and performing, quickly gaining confidence and skill. The pandemic provided an opportunity to fully focus on his passion, leading to collaborations with industry professionals like celebrity vocal coach Roger Love (John Mayer, Gwen Stefani, The Beach Boys) and songwriter Drew Lawrence (Christina Perri, The Backstreet Boys, Lea Michele). “That’s What The Whiskey’s For” follows the October 2024 release of “Blue Collars, White Claws, and Red Cups,” which kicked off this exciting new phase of Cain’s career. Cain’s live performances span a wide variety of settings, from fairs and festivals to corporate events, private parties, and live music venues. Beyond his roles as a blue-collar tradesman, country artist, and sawmill owner, Cain’s entrepreneurial spirit has seen him own multiple restaurants—including the award-winning Brix 25 in Gig Harbor, which earned Restaurant of the Year—run a car dealership, and work as a real estate developer. Currently, Cain owns and operates a live music venue where he enjoys showcasing other musicians, as well as a spice company and a restaurant/bar in Mexico. He’s also an accomplished operator of heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, and loaders, and has even built a mobile stage capable of providing a complete concert experience, including sound, lights, and band support. With a lineup of upcoming singles and performances planned for the year ahead, Nick Cain is ready to make his mark on the country music scene. For updates on his music and tour dates, follow him on Instagram @NickCainMusic and visit NickCainMusic.com. Read the full article

A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip…

Quarter Notes: Blurbs & Briefs from Sound Bites
- In this edition: Taylor Swift; Kansas; David Gilmour; and John Mayer, Stephen Stills & Neil Young
SWIFTIES FOR HARRIS: Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris for the presidency, a nod that came after the vice president debated the Republican nominee.
“I think (Harris) is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift said in her statement - signed Childless Cat Lady and posted on social media.
BILLY GREER IS NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE: Bassist Billy Greer has left Kansas, the band he joined in 1985, and was replaced by Dan McGowan.
“I am committed to doing justice to the band’s incredible legacy, and I am so grateful for this unbelievable opportunity,” McGowan said in a statement.
OH, BY THE WAY, WHIICH ONE’S GREEN: David Gilmour thinks so-called dynamic ticket pricing, in which artists - most recently Oasis, but also Bruce Springsteen and others - rip off their fans by allowing ticketing companies to jack prices during times of high demand is bunk.
“Oasis should put a price on tickets and stick to it,” the former Pink Floydian said in comments carried by Guitar magazine.
STILLS, YOUNG & MAYER: John Mayer will join Stephen Stills and Neil Young at the latter’s Harvest Moon concert benefitting Painted Turtle and the Bridge School. Read Sound Bites’ previous coverage of the Oct. 5 event here.

round up // AUGUST 23
Tumblr media
Well, it’s been a month. In August, I…
Quit a job
Started a new job
Went to the emergency room for two unplanned surgeries to remove my gallbladder
Celebrated a birthday
Yeesh, I’m exhausted just thinking about it, though not nearly as exhausted as I was just after surgery. My recovery has been steady, but it’s also been slow, which means little victories have included eating solid food and going a full day without napping. With that energy level, you can bet how I spent my short waking hours: watching a lot of movies! (I also read two books—I had some time!) My viewing in the two weeks at the hospital and recovering at home was a combo of Turner Classic Movies’ annual Summer Under the Stars celebration (with 24 hours of programming dedicated to classic movie stars like Stella Stevens, Jackie Cooper, and Greer Garson) and of comfort food faves (including ‘90s action flicks, ’00s rom-coms, and…Mary Kate and Ashley movies). You can see everything I watched in those two weeks on Letterboxd because between the sleepiness and pain meds, I needed a way to remember what was going on. I’m not sure what it says about me, but the idea of staying overnight in the hospital for the first time became a lot easier once I realized their cable packaged included TCM…
It’s also been four years. Yes, August marks both my birthday and the birthday of these Round Ups. In the last four years, I’ve rounded up…
6 stage shows
10 museums
14 concerts and events
15 series of Saturday Night Live sketches
20 podcasts
21 books
46 musical selections
49 TV shows
52 collections of articles, social media fun, and new movie trailers
421 movies
Yes, I’m excited just thinking about all those Crowd and Critic selections, though my pace going forward will slow some. Going through so many life events in just a few weeks makes you take stock of how you’re spending your time and energy, and my motto is becoming, “If it ain’t easy, it better be worth it.” If I hate cooking, why do I make myself do it every week? And if writing a Round Up with 20 picks is challenging to squeeze in every month, then it’s time to make adjustments. Author Ingrid Fetell Lee summarized this philosophy well (and provided some practical suggestions) in her blog post “12 Ways to Be Gentle With Yourself” this month. In that spirit, Round Ups are becoming more exclusive as two Top Fives. Keep reading to see which movies, concert, book, album, and articles earned coveted this month's coveted spots...
August Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
1. Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
I could summarize the plot of this big dumb shark movie, but Bill Hader said it best on SNL:
Tumblr media
Since the trailer surprisingly didn’t give most of the best moments away, I’ll remain coy and just say I spent a lot of Jason Statham’s newest charisma-fest laughing out loud. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
Tumblr media
2. Jonas Brothers: The Tour
68 songs! 5 albums! 1 night! As I have recommended Jonas content no fewer than four times in the last 4 years of these Round Ups, you should not be surprised to see this here. Like in 2019, I turned into an embarrassing fangirl freak at this show, singing along with every single song (though finding I really need to beef up on few Happiness Begins tracks) and shaking my sister with excitement every 15 minutes. (I think she was vibrating at the same energy? It's also possible she's just learned it's better to smile and nod when I'm like this.) The boys’ showmanship and knack for shelling out bops do not disappoint.
Tumblr media
3. Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld (2023)
A jaded comedy writer (basically Tina Fey) for a late night sketch show (basically Saturday Night Live) discovers a spark with a singer-songwriter rock star hosting an episode (basically John Mayer). So yes…this is an extreme overlap of my interests. Like SNL, this novel does at times lean into saucier and cruder content than I prefer, but the descriptions of the TV show’s behind-the-scenes process and of the relationship between a celebrity and a normie felt so authentic I had to Google Sittenfeld to see if these were based on her own experiences. The best part? A third of the book is a series of email exchanges in the style of You’ve Got Mail. Again, I told you it’s an extreme Venn diagram of my interests!
Tumblr media
4. You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023)
I mostly avoided Adam Sandler until 2020—somehow I’d only seen Happy Gilmore and Bedtime Stories before the pandemic. But since May of that year, I’ve watched 17 of them, and it’s time I finally just admit I’m an unironic fan of his, and now of his daughters, too! Bat Mitzvah is the update to Sixteen Candles we didn’t know we needed, and one of its pleasant surprises is Sandler is happy to stand back and watch his daughters shine (as Taylor Swift would say). His supporting role is the perfect choice for a comedy designed to launch his daughters’ Sunny and Sadie’s careers as leads, and Alison Peck’s sincere, funny script describes the pre-teen girl experience honestly. While there’s plenty of overlap with Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., it’s not a rehash, which makes the pair a perfect double feature. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10
Tumblr media
5. The Rocketeer (1991)
This action-adventure lives in the world we only imagine 1940s Hollywood to be, one where you could date an Errol Flynn-esque movie star (Timothy Dalton) after he notices you on set, one where you could accidentally find a rocket designed by Howard Hughes, and one where Bonnie and Clyde-style drive-by shoot-outs are everyday occurrences. With Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, and a dash of the spirit of Indiana Jones, my only regret is I didn’t watch this years ago. Crowd: 10/10 // Critic: 8/10
More August Crowd-Pleasers: Elvis goes gaga in Hawaii for Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), a musical comedy both corny and winning; Arnold Schwarzenegger goes ham on militants who kidnap his daughter in Commando (1985), an action flick both corny and thrilling; Michael J. Fox is a former child star who discovers a future child star in the comedy Life With Mikey (1993), the kind of family movie we don’t get enough of today; Sally Hawkins tells the true story of an amateur historian who discovered the remains of The Lost King (2022) Richard III in a drama with a fantastical twist; Paramount+ continues to abuse my nostalgia, but I continue to let them because Carly and Freddie are finally together in the third (and best) season of the iCarly reboot; like every Muny production, Sister Act was a blast on stage
August Critic Picks
Tumblr media
1. Carole-thon!
Fun fact: Every Carole Lombard movie I’ve watched since starting this Round Up has become a monthly recommendation—why stop now? Lombard was TCM’s star of the day on August 18th, and it only took one viewing to realize I wanted to marathon everything on my DVR. Most of these titles are short and sweet screwball rom-coms, which means you can knock out quite a few of these in just an afternoon:
No Man of Her Own (1932) - Lombard falls for a con man (real-life future husband Clark Gable)—could she be the one to set him straight?
The Gay Bride (1934) - Lombard marries a gangster for his money, but her true love might be his second-in-command
Lady by Choice (1934) - Burlesque dancer Lombard “adopts” a mother for some positive PR, but she ends up getting more than she bargained for
Hands Across the Table (1935) - Lombard is a manicurist seeking a rich husband, but Manic Pixie Dream Boy Fred MacMurray throws a wrench in that plan
The Princess Comes Across (1936) - Lombard is a con woman pretending to be a princess on an ocean liner, but her plans get tangled with another person's secrets (MacMurray)
True Confession (1937) - Lombard is a compulsive liar married to a compulsive truth-telling lawyer (MacMurray again) defending her for a murder she didn’t commit
Swing High, Swing Low (1937) - Lombard and MacMurry (for the last time) are musicians caught in a romantic, bi-continental melodrama
Fools for Scandal (1938) - The cutest little rom-com about a hotheaded American actress falling in love with an affable European fellow this side of Notting Hill!
In Name Only (1939) - Lombard and Cary Grant fight for their relationship even though his bitter wife won’t allow for a divorce
Tumblr media
2. Executive Suite (1954)
1950s Glengarry Glen Ross! William Holden, Barbara Stanwyck, June Allyson, Fredric March, Walter Pidgeon, and Shelley Winters vie for the seat at the head of the executive table when the president suddenly dies, and together they create a summum bonum of character dramas. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
3. No Secrets by Carly Simon (1972)
I know I’m the actual last person on Earth to realize the greatness of this album from a career that, among many accomplishments, paved the way for songwriters like Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. “You’re So Vain” is a banger with no less bite than 50 years ago, and the record is filled with gems start-to-finish.
Tumblr media
4. Edge of Darkness (1943)
TCM’s August 5th star Errol Flynn and their August 28th star Ann Sheridan are fighting for their small fishing village, their families, and their love against brutal Nazi occupiers. I couldn't find comprehensive resources to clarify how much of this action-thriller is historically accurate (the novel it’s based on doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page!), but this gritty story of Norwegian resistance captures a similar spirit to some of the best World War II films, equal parts Indiana Jones and Casablanca. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
Tumblr media
5. Good Reads
#BillionGirlSummer:
"It's #BillionGirlSummer: Taylor, Beyoncé and Barbie Made for One Epic Trifecta,” NPR.com (2023)
“Talking With ‘Swiftie Dads’ at a Taylor Swift Concert,” GQ.com (2023)
“Nearly 1 Out of 4 of ‘Barbie’ Viewers Hadn’t Gone to the Movies Since COVID,” IndieWire.com (2023)
Hollywood appears to be meeting a long-overdue reckoning:
“The Binge Purge,” vulture.com (2023)
"Anonymous Strike Diary: ‘Our Souls Were Cracking … but Then the AMPTP F***ed Up,’” HollywoodReporter.com (2023)
“Orange Is the New Black Signalled the Rot Inside the Streaming Economy,” NewYorker.com (2023)
“Mandy Moore Says She Once Got a Check for a Penny for This Is Us Streaming Residuals,” HollywoodReporter.com (2023)

“The Instrumentalist,” NYBooks.com (2022)
“The Bradley Cooper “Jewface” Controversy Isn’t Really About That Nose,” slate.com (2023)
And a grab bag of worthwhile thoughts, interviews, and news:
“Reese Witherspoon Is Starting a New Chapter,” HarpersBazaar.com (2023)
“To Help Cool a Hot Planet, the Whitest of White Coats,” NYTimes.com (2023)
“Beyoncé, Tumblr, and ‘Harlem Shake’: Revisiting Pop’s Most Pivotal Year,” TheDailyBeast.com (2023)
“Elon Musk’s Shadow Rule,” NewYorker.com (2023)
“Why You Rarely Believe Celebrity Apologies on Social Media,” BBC.com (2023)
More August Critic Picks: The kid-and-his-dog dramedy about one of the goodest doggos who ever did live, Tough Guy (1936), hits you right in the heart; Errol Flynn thrills again in a search for sunken treasure that might claim his soul in Mara Maru (1952)
Also in August…
The world’s slowest Best Picture Project continues with 1942’s Mrs. Miniver, a genuinely moving piece of war propaganda. Read my Crowd and Critic reviews.
Until September wraps, you can follow what I’m watching creating lists for on Letterboxd. In August, I updated my rankings of 2023 product movie rankings and Christopher Nolan films by Dead Wife Energy, and I also found some weird overlaps between the August releases Blue Beetle and Meg 2 (warning: spoilers!).

October 2016
Oct 1st - Taylor takes pictures with fans in Nashville. (x)
Tumblr media
Oct 4th - Demi Lovato criticises Taylor in their Glamour magazine cover interview. (x)
To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it’s not real…. It’s not realistic. And I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down, that’s not women’s empowerment.
Demi defends themself on Twitter after the interview is published, saying they're 'not apologizing for saying what everyone wants to say.' (x)
Taylor's partnership with AT&T is announced, including her Super Saturday Night pre-Super Bowl performance which will take place on Feb 4th 2017 in Houston. (x)
Joe is in London attending the IWC Schaffhausen Dinner in Honour of the BFI. (x)
Tumblr media
Oct 5th - Taylor FaceTimes with Cara and Dakota Johnson, who are both in LA, for Dakota's birthday. (x)
Oct 9th - Paul Sidoti (Taylor's guitarist) posts a photo of guitars in a rehearsal studio with the caption, 'Back in the saddle again.. #formula1' (x)
Tumblr media
Oct 11th - Cara is seen leaving Cornelia Street. (x)
Taylor, Cara, Dakota and Suki Waterhouse meet at the Waverly Inn in the West Village at around 11pm. (x)
Oct 12th - Taylor attends a private Kings of Leon concert at Le Poisson Rouge in New York, along with Lorde, Lily Aldridge, Lily Donaldson, Cara, Suki, Martha, Dakota, Zoë Kravitz and Naomi Campbell. (x) They then go to the Bowery Hotel for the afterparty. (x)
The group is then papped leaving the Bowery Hotel and arriving at the Lovers of Today bar. Joe arrives at Lovers of Today with Lily D, Martha, and Martha's boyfriend Jason McDonald, while Taylor, Dakota, Cara and Zoë arrive moments later. (x) Given that Joe has a connection to the lead singer Caleb Followill (via his Billy Lynn costar Garrett), and arrived at the bar with others who were definitely at the concert and afterparty, it seems almost certain that he was at those events too. No media picks up on his presence at the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oct 13th - Taylor goes out for dinner with Dakota and Cara in New York. (x) She then attends an Eliot Sumner concert at the Bowery Ballroom (not to be confused with the Bowery Hotel), along with Karlie, Suki, Lily D, Dakota, Cara, Zoë and Serena Williams. (x)
Tumblr media
Taylor is wearing a temporary golden tattoo on her neck.
Tumblr media
Oct 14th - Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk premieres at the New York Film Festival. (x) Joe walks the red carpet and does some promo. (x)
Eliotte, Kamilah and Melanie, three of Taylor's backup singers, are hanging out and probably rehearsing for the upcoming concert at F1. (x)
Oct 15th - Joe does some more promo with the rest of the Billy Lynn cast in New York. (x)
Tumblr media
Taylor is in LA for a few days between the 13th and 16th recording Delicate (her golden neck tattoo is visible). (x)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oct 16th - Lily D and Suki post videos of Olivia to their social media from Cornelia Street. (x) (x)
Oct 17th - Cara is seen leaving Cornelia Street. (x)
Oct 18th - Taylor is in rehearsals in Nashville for her upcoming F1 concert. Her golden neck tattoo is gone. (x) (x)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oct 20th - Little Big Town releases Better Man as the lead single from their eighth studio album. (x) (The song was written by Taylor but this fact is not publicised upon the song's initial release.)
Oct 21st - Taylor posts an Instagram story from her bed. She has a cold and Meredith is making a racket and keeping her awake ahead of her concert in Texas the next day. (x)
Oct 22nd - Taylor files a counter-suit against radio DJ David Mueller, who is suing her because he lost his job after groping her at a 2013 meet and greet. By counter-suing him for assault and battery, she hopes to 'serve as an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts.' (x)
Taylor performs her only concert of 2016 at the US F1 Grand Prix in Austin, Texas (saving the US Grand Prix from going bust in the process). She plays TIWYCF on piano, her first time performing the song live. (x) She has a cold and has to pause the show to blow her nose. (x) (While promoting Billy Lynn in Taiwan a few weeks later, Joe also has a cold.)
Tumblr media
Oct 23rd - Taylor goes to Drake's 30th birthday party at Delilah restaurant in LA. Karlie, Zoë, Jari Haile, Kennedy Rayé, Halston Sage and the Haim sisters are there, as well as John Mayer and Katy Perry. (x) Taylor and Halston both have stick-on gold star tattoos on their chests. (x)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oct 24th - Taylor commemorates the tenth anniversary of her first album with an Instagram post. (x)
Given that Taylor does not leave LA until the 28th but is not papped anywhere, it is possible that she uses her time there to work on I Did Something Bad at Conway Studios with Max and Shellback. (x) The Making Of clips for the song show that it was recorded sometime after Taylor's haircut on the 24th Sep. (Don't Blame Me was not recorded until some point after December 13th, as she wears the J necklace in the Making Of clips and we know that was a 27th birthday present. (x)) However, it isn't possible to precisely date these clips.
Oct 25th - Katy Perry attends Kanye's concert in LA and posts a video on her Instagram story dancing along to the Famous lyric about Taylor. (x)
Oct 27th - There are rumours that Taylor and Drake are dating, following her appearance at his birthday party, but these are shut down, presumably by Tree. (x) (x)
Oct 28th - Calvin drops the music video for My Way. Some think it contains several references to Taylor. (x)
Karlie wishes Drake a belated happy birthday by posting an Instagram picture of herself and Taylor at his party. (x)
Tumblr media
In the evening Taylor's plane goes from LA to NYC, and then from NYC to London. However, she stays completely under the radar and is not spotted anywhere in London. (x) At the time some people theorise that this means she's seeing Tom again, but in hindsight she almost certainly went to see Joe.
Oct 31st - Taylor's plane returns to the US from London. (x)
Taylor has a small Halloween party at her Cornelia Street townhouse. Guests include Gigi, Martha, Lily D, Camila, Kennedy Rayé and Emmie Gundler. Taylor dresses up as Deadpool and wears Ryan Reynolds' actual costume from the movie. (x)
Tumblr media
Camila talks about the party a year later on Jimmy Fallon and mentions that at one point 'two attractive guys' arrived, prompting Camila to run to the bathroom and change out of her grandma costume. (x) (x) Apparently one of the guys was dressed as Spiderman. (x) If so that was probably Joe, since that's his favourite superhero. (x) Also probably a couples' costume, since Deadpool and Spiderman have a bromance going on in the comics. However, I couldn't find any original interviews where Camila mentions a Spiderman being at the party (I know she mentioned the party in some radio interviews which have since disappeared from the internet so maybe it was one of them).
Anyways, it's very likely that the guys attending what was otherwise a girl's night/Kennedy Rayé's birthday were Joe and a friend, especially since the next day Taylor's private jet made a seemingly random round trip to London and back. Presumably this trip was to drop Joe (and possibly his friend) back in London, in time for Joe to fly from the UK to Taiwan and China for Billy Lynn promo. (x) (x)
