25 Are they the kind of person who can’t resist a good song? Can I catch your OC singing to themselves while they do the dishes?

Yes and no. Animated Phoenix is more of a recluse than his other versions when it comes to music. He still loves it and will sing along to the radio every now and then, but only if he’s sure that no-ones there. And if someone stumbles upon him singing, he will stop, stare like a deer in headlights, before leaving.

So, you can catch him singing, but he’ll stop.

26 What flower do you associate your OC with?

Sunflower.

Yes, Animated Flinch has had it bad. His carrier is a warframe and still as terrible as ever, his sire is an ex-Autobot and not in the picture, because of his carrier, and Phoenix still ran away as soon as he could, but despite that, he has grown up to be a somewhat good teenager.

Is he moody? Yea. Closed off? Yes. Scared of finding people who love him and losing them? Yes. Is he scared of his carrier finding him? YES! But despite all that, Phoenix is standing tall. Just like a sunflower stands tall, despite everything nature throws at it.

(The meaning of the sunflower isn’t lost on me either. :3)

2 Who’s your OCs best friend? How did they become best friends?

I don’t know how it happened, but Tachy introduced Keiros to me, we talked, and suddenly they were friends. (It probably helped that they’re cousins.)

Another best friend she has is Rodimus. In my story, he gets transferred to earth, because Galen’s the leading expert on rust related plagues and the like, and Drift orchestrated it all. During one of Rodimus’ walks around the town in his holoform, he stumbled upon this book store, and Nitro hasn’t left him alone ever since.

One could say that she has a certain fascination with this Prime.

8 What hobbies does your OC have? What do they do to unwind?

Talking with the dead.

Her hobby is literally talking with dead Cybertronians by either finding their remaining sparks or entering the All-Spark itself. The way she figured it out was because of an occult earth book, and she just… like… didn’t stop.

She often contacts Unicron just to spite him, but stopped after a while. She still calls up Solus Prime through for either advice, or small talk.

Nitro also likes reading or racing, and often does that to unwind.

30 My OC and your OC are friends. This isn’t a question. I’m not asking. (How do they respond?)

Nitro’s reaction would literally be “New friend? NEW FRIEND!” before dragging off Zenith to her next “Contacting the Dead” session. Seriously, the second you tell her that you want to be friends, you’re friends.

She’s the extrovert who will adopt anything that isn’t by three on a tree. (As long as you aren’t mean to her carrier or brother.)

Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) or why do we go on an adventure 2/2

During my last article, I have tried to show how the production’s story is entwined with the film’s story. I have left you asking a question: what is the purpose of the adventure?

              The movie was created around set pieces. A set piece is a big scene that costs a lot of money and around which the movie is written. It is not unusual in the industry, the Mission Impossible saga was written that way. In the case of Pirates of the Caribbean the set pieces are all the action scenes. Then, all the set pieces are the key moments of a pirate movie: a sword fight, a city under attack, a fight between two boats and a fight around a treasure. But Verbinsky takes a lot of pleasure in making them ridiculous, While Jack's boat is shot with canon fire, they shoot back with forks and other utensils as if the movie was what is left of a pirate movie: there is nothing left to eat only the utensils to do so. Then, because pirates are only about action, the rest of the film shows how they act as they want. Pirates are like artists putting their dream on the big screen.

The film as a whole is a round trip. The characters begin their quest in Port Royal and end it there. But when you think about it, every character is trying to get back what they had: as a round trip they don’t want to move on. As if pirates were still successful in Hollywood. Barbossa’s crew does not go for treasure, they want to put it back. That is why they are seen as the antagonist.  They don’t accomplish what pirates want. I could list it all for two more pages. The purpose of the adventure is the same for every character: to go back to where they were. Jack wants his boat back, Elizabeth wants Port Royal to get peace again, Will wants for Elizabeth to come back and Barbossa wants to live again. They are all fighting against things that are not under their control. This is how Pirates of the Caribbean becomes a tragic tale using all the classic tropes such as the Keiros – doing the right thing at the right time –, for example, Elizabeth saying that she is a Turner to Barbossa.  Barbossa is crossed by the fatum – the Greek word for fate –, gold’s given to the Pearl’s crew as a curse. Then, all the pirates’ plot is transformed into a mix between the most classic of all: a Greek tragedy and a modern and fun type of story.

At its core, the film is an opposition between life and death represented by Jack and Barbossa’s opposition. Jack’s first appearance is on a boat that is sinking, shot going down while Barbossa’s first appearance is always on the edge of the shot going from the left to the right. The first time the audience is introduced to these characters, it is pointed out that Jack can die but not Barbossa. But the whole quest of Barbossa is to live again. The pirate’s purpose, which is to get as much gold as the world can bear, made him neither dead or alive. All Barbossa wants is to eat an apple to live life with his mouth full. Apples are always with Barbossa and when he dies he says “I feel… cold”. It encapsulates all the characters’ dilemma, all he wanted was to feel.

The adventure’s purpose to Barbossa is to feel something, to live. Apples are so important to him that the film creates something impossible when Barbossa drops an apple when he dies. If you look closely at the scene, it is impossible. This impossible apple means that you cannot have it all during your life. The only things that keep us going is desire: the desire to be the richest men alive, then the desire to feel. Jack plays with Barbossa’s desire when he talks to him on the Pearl and the apples are at the center of the shot. Jack is at the left and Barbossa is at the right. Therefore, Jack is alive and Barbossa is dead. The adventure has changed Jack because he lost all he had in a material way and Barbossa becomes something else. For better or for worse, once Barbossa started to taste adventure and moreover life, he could not stop and this greed killed him. He betrayed one of his friends to become a captain. Then if during the movie, Barbossa dies alone Jack makes friends along the way that will save his life. When Barbossa says “I feel… cold” in the treasure cave, it all happens as if the “cold” is a synonym for alone. Perhaps the film just validates the old saying “What matters the most is not the destination but the journey”. You will never know what awaits for you across the sea. If living is a kind of loop, the adventure changes you forever. It is never the same adventure. If the purpose is not the treasure itself that leads you to death you may prefer to get some friends along the way. It might save your life?

INCARCERON Book Review

Incarceron

I have so much hype for Incarceron! If I recall correctly, this was the first book I read by Fisher back when it was new in 2007 or so. I really enjoyed it then, and I have the same feeling now.

Incarceron is fast-paced, mysterious, and kind of creepy. Of course, the first time, I thought it was quite a bit more unsettling than I did this time around, but due to reading things like Stephen King’s The Shining and ’Salem’s Lot, it didn’t quite hit the same “eek” chords.

But some of Fisher’s descriptions in Incarceron are to die for. She does such a fabulous job of creating a strong sense of place, especially when her characters spend a lot of time in the dark. I won’t mention specifics, but it’s incredibly easy to create a story map in your head through Fisher’s words. A+ on that.

Incarceron jumps between two points of view. One in the prison. One out. Eventually, these two points merge. The pacing of each chapter was well-in-hand, not allowing for too much of one POV before switching back to the other. It’s definitely what helped move the book along, keeping that integral string of mystery alive throughout the novel.

Okay, fine, I have one unhappiness with Incarceron. The character, Finn. Compared to the other characters, he’s pretty weak. He doesn’t do as much thinking for himself (which sometimes makes sense in context of his character, but not always,) and he spends more time reacting to things happening to and around him than anything else. It doesn’t take away from the story, really, but it does create a sense of “eh” when Finn gets into trouble or needs saving or situations look dire. Finn only seems to have a personality adjacent to the people he’s surrounded by.

When thinking of core character traits, I think of it like this (and this is a fabulous exercise for building your own characters): Attia? Loyal, stalwart, and observant. Keiro? Brash, selfish, and stubborn. Gildas? Determined, obsessive, and arrogant. Claudia? Calculating, passionate, and willful. Jared? Practical, introspective, and kind. But what about Finn? He’s indecisive, I’ll give him that, but that’s not really a strong character trait. Reading the list above, it should be pretty obvious what each character is generally like, how they might react to each other, and how they might respond to stress.

Finn’s relatively weak characterization is no reason to leave Incarceron on the shelf though! It’s confusing and unique and, honestly, just a lot of fun. Even as a YA novel, it skirts many issues such as human nature, good versus evil, loyalty versus ambition, and the oldie-but-goodie: Do our memories make us who we are?

If you’re looking for a steampunk-ish fantasy adventure, Incarceron is the book for you!

Because I have no memory of reading (perhaps just finishing) Incarceron’s sequel, Sapphique, I’ll be reading it next to finish off the series and finally get some closure! See you next time!

Kyran was named by her mother Elke, with a bit of input from her sister Brynn. She keeps her birthname.

3. What does their name mean?

Kyran means ‘little dark one’ or ‘dark haired’. The name came with the fact that she was so opposite to her sister in coloring. 

4. Why did you choose that name for your apprentice?

Going through a list of girl names til one stuck? Then changed the spelling just a bit.

5. Do they have any nicknames or favorite pet names?

Ky is the most common, and she used to be called Kyshuga (play on the word for little sister and Kyran’s name) by her sister Brynn.

He had a set of headphones on near silent volume while reading to drown out the sounds of the busy hotel around him. The book was one of his favorite series to read, a fantasy book.

Loki had made the mistake of getting comfortable on the couch like he had, because the music he was listening to put him to sleep. He had a finger in the book so he wouldn't lose his place, but that's not the problem.

The problem was that he fell asleep where everyone could see him, and that meant his ears and tail were exposed. Even now, those ears twitched while Loki slept.

Okay there is a lot of issues going around with “Broganes” rn and i’m going to make a post about it obviously.

I’m going to put my disclaimer here rn so you all can see it before reading the rest of the post:

IT IS FINE TO SEE SHIRO AND KEITH AS HAVING A BROTHERLY BOND IF THIS IS HOW YOU PREFER TO SEE THEM. This does not mean it is okay to attack others who do not see it that way.

I’ll break the issues down here:

A majority of people do not like the term “Broganes”. It is seen as racists and there is a reasoning behind that. It is very disrespectful to take family names that are completely different and mash them together like this. Japanese last names do not work the same way as American or European last names guys. They have a history and honor to them that is different from how European and American ones do. They are fictional characters so it isn’t harming any actually family names honor but this is still something you should really consider and think about when making up phrases such as “broganes” is the cultural context and historical background and meanings of names like these.

Another point on the last names - Keith does not have a canon last name in Voltron: Legendary defenders. Kogane is specifically from the 80s voltron character Akira Kogane who Keith is based after. It is perfectly fine to use this as a HC last name if you see him as Japanese or part Japanese as it is a Japanese last name, if you see him as Korean though it does not work at all.

Using “broganes” in the sense that it is Keith’s “canon” last name you would also have to include Lance as Lance’s 80s base since name was Isamu Kurogane.

If you just use it as a headcanon last name that is perfectly cool!! Just try to think of a different name than broganes

“Shiro you are like a brother to me”

Okay y’all here is where the issue is with the discourse on using this for “broganes”, the “you’re like a sibling to me” have been a media trope for a long time and is used in real life as well. Please stop using it as a way to try and prove they are canonically brothers. If you see it as a platonic scene that’s perfectly fine. Just stop trying to shove it as “proof” down other peoples throats since a lot of people’s sibling relationships really are not like shiro and Keith’s relationship so they just cannot see shiro and keith that way.

“Shiro and Keith look alike so they have to be related!” “Shiro and Keith’s dad look alike so it means Shiro and Keith have to be related!”

My guys, my dudes, my ladies……..animators have something called an art style. Those art styles tend to range from 2 to about 9 different facial structure differences. Studio mir has 4 distinct chin shapes, about 6 distinct eyebrow shapes, and 4ish distinct eye shapes and also eyelash shapes. I will list them all for you (will go more in depth with photo accompaniments on a secondary post for this specific point) so this really isn’t a good basis for a “broganes” argument.

“I understand it isn’t canon but i love the idea of them actually being related somehow (be it brothers or cousins) but i know it is just a headcanon and that’s okay!”

“If you respect the fact that I see them as brothers I will respect the fact that you do not see them this way”

Now as I said at the beginning, it is perfectly okay to see them as brothers! It’s a fun headcanon to have and I personally enjoy good wholesome “adoptive bros” content as well (as i personally hc Keith as Korean) but just keep in mind these little pointers!:

It is just a headcanon, not canon

It is meant to be fun

Some like it some don’t, please respect everyone’s perspective

Many people see “broganes” as racist so try to see if y’all can band together to make another phrase like “platonic Keiro” or “Bro Keiro” so you don’t have to run into Sheith things since you don’t care for sheith, which is perfectly acceptable

Stop using a fun headcanon as a way to try and disprove other peoples feeling on a ship, its a dick move and makes the fun headcanon not so fun anymore

Studios have styles, this isn’t a good basis for “canon” evidence

Stop using it as a way to fight in a ship war, its suppose to be a fun headcanon not a weapon

And for Sheith shippers who get pissed at anyone who likes “broganes”:

It’s a headcanon it’s okay if they see it that way

As long as they aren’t attacking ppl or using it as a way to disprove your ship or trying to make it canon there is no issue for it

If i see you harassing a person who likes “broganes” when they aren’t attacking ppl, using it against your ship, or trying to prove it as “canon” to disprove your ship then I will call you out for it and so will my friends. Anyone that is just having fun with it does not deserve to get shit on for liking it.

Inktober Day 30: “The Remade Man” (Steampunk)

Scene is a (really) vague minor spoiler for the YA novel duology, Incarceron.

Even if it was overall irrelevant to the plot, this was one of my favorite scenes and it was pretty memorable for me as a kid even when I forgot practically the rest of the book lol. I didn’t even like Keiro and, I mean, when you think about it, he wasn’t really important to the main story, but I guess this was just one of my earlier exposures to the concept that even characters with nasty personalities have reasons for how they act.
