Big Tech, Big Oil, and private equity firms are among the leading companies that profit from controlling media and technology, accelerating the climate crisis, privatizing public goods and services, and violating human and workers' rights, the International Trade Union Confederation revealed on Monday.

The ITUC has labeled seven major companies as "corporate underminers of democracy" that lobby against government attempts to hold them accountable and are headed by super-rich individuals who fund right-wing political movements and leaders.

"This is about power, who has it, and who sets the agenda," Todd Brogan, director of campaigns and organizing at the ITUC, toldThe Guardian. "We know as trade unionists that unless we're organized, the boss sets the agenda in the workplace, and we know as citizens in our countries that unless we're organized and demanding responsive governments that actually meet the needs of people, it's corporate power that's going to set the agenda."

ITUC chose the seven companies based on preexisting reporting and research, as well as talks with allied groups like the Council of Global Unions and the Reactionary International Research Consortium. The seven companies were "emblematic" of a broader trend, and the confederation said it would continue to add "market-leading" companies to the list.

"While these seven corporations are among the most egregious underminers of democracy, they are hardly alone," ITUC said. "Whether state-owned enterprises in China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia; private sector military contractors; or regulation-busting tech startups, the ITUC and its partners will continue to identify and track corporate underminers of democracy and their links to the far-right."

Amazon topped the list due to its "union busting and low wages on multiple continents, monopoly in e-commerce, egregious carbon emissions through its AWS data centers, corporate tax evasion, and lobbying at national and international level," ITUC wrote.

In the U.S., for example, Amazon has responded to attempts to hold it accountable for labor violations by challenging the constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Board. While its founder Jeff Bezos voices liberal opinions, Amazon's political donations have advanced the right by challenging women's rights and antitrust efforts.

Blackstone is the world's largest private equity firm and private real-estate owner whose CEO, Stephen Schwarzman, has given to right-wing politicians including former U.S. President Donald Trump's 2024 reelection campaign. It funds fossil fuel projects and the destruction of the Amazon and profited from speculating on the housing market after the 2008 financial crash.

The United Nations special papporteur on housing said the company used "its significant resources and political leverage to undermine domestic laws and policies that would in fact improve access to adequate housing."

ExxonMobil made the list largely for its history of funding climate denial and its ongoing lobbying against needed environmental regulations.

"Perhaps the greatest example of Exxon's disinterest in democratic deliberation was its corporate commitment of nearly four decades to conceal from the public its own internal evidence that climate change was real, accelerating, and driven by fossil fuel use while simultaneously financing far-right think tanks in the U.S. and Europe to inject climate scepticism and denialism into the public discourse," ITUC wrote.

Glencore is the world's largest commodities trader and the largest mining company when judged by revenue. Several civil society and Indigenous rights groups have launched campaigns against it over its anti-democratic policies. It has allegedly funded right-wing paramilitaries in Colombia and anti-protest vigilantes in Peru.

"The company's undermining of democracy is not in dispute, as it has in recent years pled guilty to committing bribery, corruption, and market manipulation in countries as varied as Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, and South Sudan," ITUC said

Okay there is a lot of issues going around with “Broganes” rn and i’m going to make a post about it obviously.

I’m going to put my disclaimer here rn so you all can see it before reading the rest of the post:

IT IS FINE TO SEE SHIRO AND KEITH AS HAVING A BROTHERLY BOND IF THIS IS HOW YOU PREFER TO SEE THEM. This does not mean it is okay to attack others who do not see it that way.

I’ll break the issues down here:

A majority of people do not like the term “Broganes”. It is seen as racists and there is a reasoning behind that. It is very disrespectful to take family names that are completely different and mash them together like this. Japanese last names do not work the same way as American or European last names guys. They have a history and honor to them that is different from how European and American ones do. They are fictional characters so it isn’t harming any actually family names honor but this is still something you should really consider and think about when making up phrases such as “broganes” is the cultural context and historical background and meanings of names like these.

Another point on the last names - Keith does not have a canon last name in Voltron: Legendary defenders. Kogane is specifically from the 80s voltron character Akira Kogane who Keith is based after. It is perfectly fine to use this as a HC last name if you see him as Japanese or part Japanese as it is a Japanese last name, if you see him as Korean though it does not work at all.

Using “broganes” in the sense that it is Keith’s “canon” last name you would also have to include Lance as Lance’s 80s base since name was Isamu Kurogane.

If you just use it as a headcanon last name that is perfectly cool!! Just try to think of a different name than broganes

“Shiro you are like a brother to me”

Okay y’all here is where the issue is with the discourse on using this for “broganes”, the “you’re like a sibling to me” have been a media trope for a long time and is used in real life as well. Please stop using it as a way to try and prove they are canonically brothers. If you see it as a platonic scene that’s perfectly fine. Just stop trying to shove it as “proof” down other peoples throats since a lot of people’s sibling relationships really are not like shiro and Keith’s relationship so they just cannot see shiro and keith that way.

My guys, my dudes, my ladies……..animators have something called an art style. Those art styles tend to range from 2 to about 9 different facial structure differences. Studio mir has 4 distinct chin shapes, about 6 distinct eyebrow shapes, and 4ish distinct eye shapes and also eyelash shapes. I will list them all for you (will go more in depth with photo accompaniments on a secondary post for this specific point) so this really isn’t a good basis for a “broganes” argument.

Now as I said at the beginning, it is perfectly okay to see them as brothers! It’s a fun headcanon to have and I personally enjoy good wholesome “adoptive bros” content as well (as i personally hc Keith as Korean) but just keep in mind these little pointers!:

It is just a headcanon, not canon

It is meant to be fun

Some like it some don’t, please respect everyone’s perspective

Many people see “broganes” as racist so try to see if y’all can band together to make another phrase like “platonic Keiro” or “Bro Keiro” so you don’t have to run into Sheith things since you don’t care for sheith, which is perfectly acceptable

Stop using a fun headcanon as a way to try and disprove other peoples feeling on a ship, its a dick move and makes the fun headcanon not so fun anymore

Studios have styles, this isn’t a good basis for “canon” evidence

Stop using it as a way to fight in a ship war, its suppose to be a fun headcanon not a weapon

And for Sheith shippers who get pissed at anyone who likes “broganes”:

It’s a headcanon it’s okay if they see it that way

As long as they aren’t attacking ppl or using it as a way to disprove your ship or trying to make it canon there is no issue for it

If i see you harassing a person who likes “broganes” when they aren’t attacking ppl, using it against your ship, or trying to prove it as “canon” to disprove your ship then I will call you out for it and so will my friends. Anyone that is just having fun with it does not deserve to get shit on for liking it.

Sheith vs Broganes Discourse

Alright, most of my followers can probably tell from my blog where I lie on this issue but as a multishipper I felt the need to explain my POV in the hopes of making people see reality for a moment here. 

As someone that ships both Klance and Sheith I’ve seen the literally firestorm that the fandom has become after s6 dropped. I’ve had to ditch discord servers and block people because people in this fandom still don’t know how to stay in their lanes. 

I’ve written Sheith romantically in love. I’ve written Klance with Shiro and Keith platonically in love as brothers. There’s literally nothing wrong with either and if you feel the need to go into other tags and flame people because they don’t share the same opinion as you then you need to take a step back and remember that you’re literally arguing and baiting actual human beings over fictional fucking characters. 

My personal view is that in canon Sheith is a romantic pairing, regardless of the ‘brother’ line for reasons that I could spend hours writing about. In canon I believe that Klance won’t happen, but that won’t stop me from writing AUs for both of them. Because, believe it or not, at the end of the day, we’re all writing fanfiction whether your pairing is canon or not. Take a moment to remember that before you bitch about queerbaiting and whatever the hell else you antis like to come up with.

Keith saving Shiro multiple times with the knowledge that he too might not make it, isn’t a romantic gesture of courting or professing their intimate love. It’s is a feat of a sibling, who’s lost almost everything he held dear, fighting to protect what is left of his broken family. His ONLY family. 

What’s beautiful about Shiro and Keith’s relationship is NOT about an incestuous teacher-student turned defenders of the universe romantic relationship. 

What’s beautiful about it is the profound bond these two have that links the as brothers- in arms and family. Both of them creating a pact to take care of each other through thick and thin no matter what, be it an orphaned kid or a medically doomed pilot, both prodigies and skilled beyond anyone’s imagination. 

Lovers come and go (as much as I hate to say it, that’s Adam’s symbolism in his and Shiro’s relationship) but the reason why Keith and Shiro always make it back to each other is the same reason Pidge was able to find Matt and her dad; the same reason why Lance and Hunk could make it to their families; the same reason why Allura will forever have a link with her father’s creation.

It’s because family is universal. Familial love can never be broken, bent or diminished. And that’s why Keith and Shiro’s relationship is so beautiful.

And that’s why their relationship will always be a symbol for me and my brothers.

Go ahead and message me hate notes or threaten me or tell me to “respect everyone’s ship”. But there’s a line: and incest crosses it.

Some of you may or may not have come across an IG account called voltronspill. There’s not much on there in terms of actual content, but it popped up in my trending feed and one particular post caught my eye because it filled me apoplectic rage.

It read “Keith is emotionally unstable and mentally unfit to be the Black Paladin. He also has an unhealthy obsession with Shiro, which is disturbing, since they’re brothers.”

I’m not even going to waste time on the Shiro and Keith being brothers part because Josh Hamilton already decimated broganes and left its body in a ditch. I want to address the first sentence, which is the bit that set me off.

I am a neurodivergent person. I have anxiety and depression, both of which I do my best to control through a combination of medication, counselling, and lifestyle. And yet no matter how carefully I control it, I still have bouts of mental and emotional instability; it’s just par for the course when your body doesn’t make the neurotransmitters you need. EDIT: I consider myself to be a hardworking, intelligent adult capable of accomplishing my goals. I know many neurodivergent folks who do phenomenal work every day. So it’s very disheartening to see messages like this being spread, even if the person they’re directed at is fictional. Popular culture and media transmit messages that are absorbed by our brains, consciously or not. END EDIT. The message a post like that sends to ND people on a social media platform is: “If you’re mentally ill, you don’t deserve to aspire to greatness.”

Furthermore, there’s no acknowledgement of why Keith reacts to things the way he does. He has clearly suffered emotional trauma (Mom leaving, Dad dying, being placed in the system, repeatedly losing Shiro). But he’s never learned a “proper way” to cope with it, so he does it in the only way he knows how, which I can say with certainty is how a lot of sad and mad folk start their journey to healing. From there, we learn better ways. Keith is just doing what he needs to survive, and if you’re gonna shit on someone for surviving - fictional or real - you need to throw yourself into the sun.

I only pointed out what the show has canonically implied/showed us. That the only canon relationship these two characters have at the moment is a brotherly one, as stated by Keith on 3 different occasions. And if it were to develop into something more, that would feel a little odd. At least at first.

I did use the word "creepy" but that wasn't the correct word to use. And just because I have the ability to tell when a ship is odd or even very unlikely, that doesn't mean I don't ship them.

Ya' know even if I DIDN'T ship Sheith, who cares? I didn't bring up the topic to attack the ship or put anyone down for liking it, so why would you give two shits about my opinions? Why are you so ready to fight real people who have opposing opinions about the relationships of fictional characters?

Especially when said ships are not even canon?

Even someone does have opposing opinions WHO. GIVES. A. SHIT! We need to all just respect people are going to see things differently and just enjoy the show for what it is! Just sit back and enjoy the path the show takes and if your ship ends up canon enjoy it. But do NOT shit on others for preferring a different ship because you know what? Hi! I don't know if this is necessary or something but I just want say that I'm Asian and prefers using the term Broganes and I don't think it's racist at all. When say I love Broganes I'm not saying they're bloodrelated, rather I love the brotherly bond that exist between Shiro and Keith (I know a lot of people think this way). (1/?)

Wow… hearing this makes me feel conflicted, but also relieved since I’m not the only one tagging it because of a simple, innocent preference. However, I had another person message me before, and they were Asian as well, but they told me to not tag them as “broganes”… but you are Asian yourself and you are telling me that it is okay to tag them as that!!! You’re saying that it’s completely okay and not racist!!!! In this case, what do I do? I tag them as “broganes” for the exact same reason as you!!! They’re obviously not blood-related, but their brotherly bond is evident and I believe that Keith sees Shiro as a brother figure, especially after s6. Keith referred to Shiro as his brother twice, so… even though they’re not related, that’s kind of implying how close their bond is that way. 

It sucks that she/th shippers label anyone who tags “broganes” as antis… it really does. As you’ve said (very well, I might add), I view it the same way you do, with no ill-intent!!!
