I found some rather interesting unused sprites in Raincode. MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING.
Looking in the files for Raincode I noticed that a few characters have sprites that are never seen in game but the same expression is shown in a cinematic like this Shinigami sprite.
I'm confident that Shinigami never shows this sprite in the whole game but I distinctly remember a cutscene where she flatted herself onto the ground in chapter 1.
So this gives credence to my theory that the developers made all the sprites and story events first but when it came to making dialogue and cutscenes, the devs decided that certain scene worked better as a cinematic with subtitles rather than an ingame text conversation and the sprites that would have been used in that scene did not show up.
I don't know why these sprites are still in the game files if they are never used but whatever. I took what I believe to be all the unused sprites from Raincode and paired them with the scene that they would have been in. I'm confident that I have pulled every unused sprite but if I did miss one someone can correct me on it.
Also, MASSIVE END GAME SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEATEN THE GAME DO NOT CLICK.
Only 4 out of the 11 sprites Karen has are seen in game. It's likely that most if not all of the play was going to be purely shown through ingame dialogue but they made a bunch of illustrations for the story of the play and cutscenes with subtitles. What interests me the most is the second to last sprite as it looks like Karen when her lips touched the poisoned cup and she is about to to vomit blood.

These Priest sprites were likely used for when Yuma tried to talk to him in the abandoned village and the he tried to attack Yuma.

These Yakou sprites might have been intended for the scene where Yuma meets him in the Homunculus Testing Site.

This might be a stretch but I think this Kurumi sprite was to be used in this scene where Yuma shuts off the rain maker machine and Kurumi collapses due to being exposed to sunlight.

That's all the sprites that I believe are never seen in the game. It's pretty cool to leftover content like this and get a feel for how the development of this game went.

Chapter 2 Loading Screen Trivia
Note: Currently, I do not know which of these trivia may be general game trivia or Chapter 2 exclusives (if there is any). And there may be trivia I'm currently missing that I will add later on, if I find any more.
World Detective Organization (WDO) An extra-legal, extra-privileged organization devoted to eradicating the world's unsolved mysteries.
Detective Deed An identification card. These are granted by the World Detective Organization.
Master Detective Among the detectives belonging to the World Detective Organization, this is a detective with a specialized power called Forensic Forte that aids in their investigative activities.
Forensic Forte Those exhibiting innate talent for special powers like clairvoyance or mind-reading are trained by the WDO to develop a supernatural investigative ability called Forensic Forte or simply, Forte.
Amaterasu Corporation Many products are in development, some of which cannot be made public.
Amaterasu Peacekeepers A department of Amaterasu Corporation. They serve as a sort of police force within Kanai Ward.
Kanai Station The only train station in Kanai Ward. It's a magnificent building, but seldom has customers because of the city's isolation.
Kamasaki District Crime generally isn't bad here, unless you venture deeper inside, that is.
Riverbank Due to polluted waters, fish are rarely caught.
Ginma District Security tends to be pretty tight, likely on account of the frequent patronage by Amaterasu Corporation executives and other wealthy individuals.
"Dragon Palace" A popular meat bun shop in Ginma District. They sell at the higher-than-usual price of 500 shien apiece, but the owner insists it's due to superior seasoning.
Kanai Bus System A bus service running throughout Kanai Ward. The bus fee is fixed at 200 shien. Amaterasu Corporation employees ride free.
Kanai Ward Living Condition Perhaps because of the daily rainfall, some people in Kanai Ward don't mind getting wet.
Popular Sports Parkour is popular among the young men of Kamasaki District. New problems have arisen however, what will all the trespassing and running across the top of food stalls.
Treatment of Criminals Criminals captured by the Peacekeepers are sent to detention facilities where they are interrogated until they admit guilt; that is, if they're not disposed of on the spot.
Desuhiko's Beanie Desuhiko's custom-made, designer beanie is waterproof, and cost him several months' pay.
Fubuki's Accessories Fubuki's necklace has a clock motif. The choker is decorated with video playback control symbols.
Aetheria Academy An all-girls school situated on a mountain summit in Kanai Ward. It is 10 minutes away by bus from Kamasaki District. The students are mostly daughters of Amaterasu employees.
Aetheria Academy The prestigious all-girls school boasts not only a highly advanced educational program, but a weighty investment into club activities.
Aetheria Academy Cafeteria Much thought is put toward the caloric content and nutritional value of the menu, making it very popular among the students. This week's special is the "Hamburg Steak Meal."
Pets Because of Kanai Ward's unending rain, indoor pets are popular. At the same time, there is increasing concern of many dogs and cats become feral after being abandoned by irresponsible owners.
Flora in Kanai Ward Because it's difficult to grow plants in the perpetually rainy Kanai Ward, many have been replaced with synthetic counterparts, aside from some roadside trees and flowers in Ginma.
What's Trending at the Academy At Aetheria Academy, the students are raving about "Monomitchi," a game in which a bear cub is raised. It can turn into a variety of different bears, depending on its upbringing.
"Waiting for Gokut" One of the popular plays performed by Aetheria's theater club. The story revolves around the friends of someone named Gokut (GO-koo) waiting for him to return.
"The Culprit is Not Among Us" One of the popular plays performed by Aetheria's theater club. A mystery where 15 trapped men and women are drawn into a string of murders. Unique in that the culprit lurks within the audience.
"Faraway at the Bound of the World" One of the popular plays performed by Aetheria Academy's theater club. An adventure set in a fantasy world, revealed in the climax to be a devasted future earth all along. (No, I didn't make a typo)
"Match: The Intersection of Fate" One of the popular plays performed by Aetheria's theater club. A drama featuring an ensemble cast at a crossroads. Eight unique performances from different points of view, depending on the day.
About Aiko Always cheerful and full of energy, she had many friends. She enjoyed transforming into a completely different person through acting and wanted to try many different roles.
Karen's Weakness She dislikes the sounds and flashes of thunder and lightning, and is quick to hide in her room at the mere hint of rumbling.
Yoshiko's Bag The waist bag used in the theater club belongs to Yoshiko. It's designed by a brand from outside Kanai Ward that Pucci also adores.
Waruna's Secret On the way home from Aetheria Academy, she stops by the riverbank to give milk to stray cats, an activity she hasn't told anyone about.
Kurane's Favorite Tunes She's secretly gotten into heavy metal choir and is looking forward to an upcoming death metal choir release.
Aetheria Academy's Teacher Hana is the name of the teacher Desuhiko disguised himself as. An alumnus of Aetheria Academy, she guides her students with a firm yet gentle style of education.
Omen Detective A Master Detective with the Forte to predict the future. However, the range of the prediction is extremely narrow and limited. This detective was not summoned to Kanai Ward.

Hey guys look! A Karen! This Atheria Academy anime thought burst into my head so, long ago I had some dream where Yuma is dressed like a girl and attend to the academy along with Kurumi and the other girls, and yes Aiko and Karen are alive. Now then here's an outfit reference sheet for Karen, I'll do more of the girls' reference sheet but for now, here's Karen and her outfits, I figure blue maybe her fav color, kinda match the eyes and as for the outfits I went for the kinda classy formal look since Kurumi said she's classy I mean she does seem to be like her family is a millionaire. Anyway she's kind of like one of those rich antagonists who is sorta bratty, but not to bratty? I didn't know, anyways I hope you guys enjoy and stay safe and kawaii.
Bye!

Second place in the poll was the Aetheria Academy girls soooooo #7
Minor spoilers for Chapter 2
Starting off with Kurumi, she is a rookie spy following in the footsteps of her father who was also a spy. They work freelance so anyone can hire their services however steered clear of higher ups in the Amaterasu Alliance. Ever since her dad went missing she’s been on the search for him. She also attends this very prestigious academy called Aetheria Academy which is an all girls school. Here is where you learn to be a proper lady and the like. This school was originally for only nobles but some commoners have been admitted due to showing great promise.
In this school there is a very famous tradition of plays and this is where the girls attending this school get to shine and catch the attend of possible suitors. At the top is usually Aiko, Kurane, Waruna, Yoshiko, and Karen.
Unlike Kurumi, they are just normal noble school girls trying to aim for the top. However in a recent incident Aiko was expelled for “unladylike conduct” and “murder attempt” reported by Karen. No one dared challenge her on this claim because her father was a well known noble in the Amaterasu Alliance. Ever since then Kurane, Waruna, and Yoshiko have become distant seeing how Aiko seemed to be what held them together.
Kurumi, hearing her friend was expelled for such extreme allegations, decided to investigate this while using the skills her father taught her and skills she picked up trying to look for him. Little did she know an Elite Strike Force has infiltrated Alliance territory and was here to deal with a certain Martina
Ok so this took so long because honestly I thought I knew what I wanted to do with these girls but as I was typing this out I realized “oh shit no I don’t” and so I’m sorry to those who was waiting for something in depth and spectacular but got this instead and even this will likely change. If you got any ideas then I would love to hear them!

Hey, it’s been awhile!
I just wanna drop by to give a Kurumi Wendy Redesign!
That’s it, thanks everyone<3
(I’ll most likely drop from the face of the Earth again until I do another Raincode themed drawing since I’m busy for a convention coming up and a personal event!)
Enjoy!!
~~~~
📝 KURUMI REWRITE PLOTHOLE COVERS (feel free to discuss them or add more to them in the comments, and this was written during my dance rehearsals so they may not make sense)
Because of Kurumi’s high intelligence of being able to suspect others due to being knowledgeable about Kurane, Waruna, Yoshiko, and Karen, her reasoning is impressive. Not to mention how Kurumi is Kanai Ward’s informant. Already being an informant would be helpful for the only detective agency in the city.
- Being an informant and also in high school, I can age her up to be a senior (if she wasn’t already), being able to have an internship working under Yakou. This can block the plot hole of why Kurumi often doesn’t appear in classes after chapter 2. Being a senior also allows her to have open periods, to which she can use them to get out of school early. If she also works under Yakou as a “trainee”, she can have more of a deeper connection with the agency as a whole.
- If Kurumi is an intern as well, she usually makes appearances every now and then. Also being focused on school because of exams during the entirety of chapter one can be an excuse as to why she didn’t appear. She also could’ve been able to know how the master detectives are going to Kanai Ward and she would’ve been too shy to face them. Yuma can be the first one she can actually trust and not feel awkward around, since he is a trainee to her.
- This can be beneficial for Yuma, as he could see more about the culture and the city in general thanks to Kurumi. He can also learn from her and train with her.
- Instead of just being in theater club, I feel her being in relations with Theater tech would fit more. Maybe Aiko convinced her to at least be in a similar class to her so she wouldn’t be alone.
(If you want to draw her, Redesigned Kurumi has blonde highlights, I forgot to add them on the full body 😭)
i feel like most of the hate karen gets is solely because of her name like yeah she killed aiko but you'd be hard pressed to find a fan of a kodaka IP that hates a murderer for just murdering. it was obviously a crime of passion that she regrets. it clearly haunts her, from the way yuma describes her. but what can she do at that point? confess? would you do that?
i don't even like her. i'm a hard neutral on her. i just think it's funny how i've seen people actively hate her when the girl didn't do anything especially cruel
.
#raincode takes#mdarc#rain queued#mod guillaume ☔️#mdarc spoilers#karen raincode#ok i have ch2 autism so.#it’s hard to tell what karen really feels about the death of aiko because we only see her alive for ~30-45 minutes if that#and the mystery labyrinth’s manifestations of people can be distorted based on yuma’s perception of the case#so we don’t know if karen actually felt bad enough about murdering aiko to want her to die#but i will say — the face that she was the one to report aiko as dead despite killing her implies some level of guilt#especially considering the murder was second degree. she took over as lead actress yes but that could be to make herself seem less#suspicious
BURSTS IN THRO THE WALL
got any raincode lgbtqia+ headcanons,,
AYO FIX MY DAMN WALL!!! honestly smh... that cost a lot y'know, ROLLS EYES /j
Anyway (I will absolutely forget some people, so if I forgot someone then I'M SORRY!!! Just assume they're gay, cause most people in this game are)
First of all I'm gonna start off with like sexuality headcanons, then afterwards we'll move onto gender ones
THE GAME IS JUST FULL OF BISEXUALS, LIKE DESUHIKO, MARTINA, YAKOU!! Yomi I can also see being bisexual except I also believe he is aromantic (or at least somewhere along those lines) since he said he doesn't love people
Yuma is pan, along with Halara and maybe Shinigami too (I mean did you see how her and fubuki got I'm just saying enemies to lovers arc??) I can also see Vivia except he'd be more on the asexual side of things, like romantically he loves any gender but he doesn't want anything further than that
The lesbians are Guillaume, Fubuki, literally all of Aetheria Academy except for Kurumi and Karen (I can only see those two as straight)
The gays are Seth and Zilch (or well the hitman anyway)
AND THEN THE AROACE KING HIMSELF WOULD BE MAKOTO!!!
Before moving onto gender, I would like to add that Waruna, Yoshiko, Aiko and Kurane were in a poly relationship.
In terms of gender, I haven't thought too much about it, though Halara is 100% non binary (and that's not even a headcanon)
I feel like Seth would be agender, probably with he/they/it pronouns kinda thing. The same can also be said for Makoto probably too.
I saw this post ages ago (I have no clue who made it though) but they said Yuma has all pronouns and is genderfluid AND I LOVE THAT IDEA!!!
Shinigami and Kurumi would be demi-girls, Guillaume would be a trans girl, Yomi just always gives me massive trans energy for some reason so I feel like he would be a trans guy
As for the rest I am not sure though (also this post is far too long I AM SO SORRY I LIKE TO RAMBLE!!!)
Desuhiko Thunderbolt A Master Detective dispatched to the Nocturnal Detective Agency by the World Detective Organization. His goal is to become famous as a mystery-solving superstar detective. He often refers to Trainee Detective Yuma as "rookie."
Desuhiko's Forte is Disguise, the ability to change his voice, appearance, and build, visually and mentally masquerading as the targeted person. The backpack he always carries is required to use this ability.
Seth Burroughs Section chief of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers Investigations team. A mumbling, unhealthy-looking man with a decidedly nervous demeanor. His words are polite, but any underling that makes a mistake is brutally rebuked. He habitually speaks through a megaphone to makeup for his feeble voice.
Yomi indicted him for colluding with the church and the Peacekeepers took him away.
Yomi Hellsmile The director of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers. Despite having the face of a handsome young ma, he is cold-hearted and cruel, finding joy in the misfortune of others, especially from miseries he devised himself. He holds great power within Amaterasu and treats his underlings like expendable tools.
Martina Electro The vice director of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers. A tall, elegant, intelligent, bespectacled woman who ruthlessly crushes the opposition and has no mercy for those who defy her. She's obedient only to Yomi.
Kurumi Wendy A student at Aetheria Academy. Hungry for knowledge, she seeks out anything she wants to know with unwavering tenacity. Thanks to her cheerful demeanor and excellent communication skills, she's quick to get along with people she meets. Having a lifelong fascination with detectives, she couldn't pass up an opportunity to talk with one and shadowed Yuma.
Aiko Kurumi's friend and a member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy who died six months ago. The Peacekeepers declared she committed suicide by jumping off the roof.
Yoshiko A member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy. A beauty whose maturity makes it difficult to think of her as a high school student. She's popular in the theater club and is on par with Waruna and Karen in terms of acting ability. Mild-mannered and quiet, she values the team more than the individual.
Waruna A member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy. She puts on the flashiest and trendiest makeup, which further accents her aggressive personality. Although she intimidates everyone around her, she has no desire to overshadow anyone. She genuinely enjoys acting and being on stage, innately capable of playing any role.
Kurane A member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy. She doesn't talk much and prefers to spend time alone. Because it's difficult for her to express her emotions, no one really knows what she's thinking. But her acting skills place her among the best in the club.
Karen A member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy. She has long, beautiful hair and the elegant aura typical of a lady. She's enthusiastic about acting, possessing a stoic philosophy about it. However, because of that, she tends to be uncooperative and rarely interacts with the other students.
After performing a scene where her character drank poison, she vomited blood and died.
