My ideal vld fix-it is Lance and Hunk having "two birds on a wire" style blind faith vs unhealthy mistrust parallel arcs, where Lance trusts the wrong person and not himself to the point of actively ignoring the warning signs he sees vs Hunk who trusts himself but doesnt trust others to the point of going full Nancy Drew and going behind his teams back, and this causes a chasm in their friendship which would have been more focused upon in earlier seasons (and then they kiss <3)

A study on Lance's underrated role on the team. Pt 6.

Hunk pt 2

Last time we were talking about how Hunk would usually don't let teasing or hurtful words in moments of stress affect him. That doesn't mean Lance will not jump to his defense too.

In the Journey within, Lance says the famous "just drift out by yourself, Mr. Lone Wolf". At this point Lance had not really made any new kind of jab to Keith, and like we mentioned before he was taking Keith's orders very seriously but then really goes to the yugular in this episode and its only after Keith insults both Allura and Hunk.

There are some other small moments this episode that I wanted to mention.

Like Lance focusing on holding Hunk when they get launched in space.

And how he very much refuses to leave a teammate alone, no matter if that teammate asked them to run. He actually sounds confused by Hunk's request.

Lance's protectiveness can also be seen towards Hunk in the way he refused to harm or fight him even when the later was brainwashed and trying to hurt him. In their fight Lance never actually does more than just push Hunk far from him.

And will also support Hunk when he says no, even when its a direct order from Keith.

Like when Hunk refuses to take Kaltenecker with him and Lance arranges it so he can have nice road trip companions.

It is quite cute how Lance is the first person Hunk shows his shenanigans with the mice.

Overall, while sadly Lance and Hunk didnt have that many significant moments or more development for their friendship, we can see their mutual trust and ease around each other. And how Hunk feels comfortable enough with Lance to follow his plans, seek him for advice and be at the end of Lance's own brand of protectiveness.

As the legs, they work well together, often being paired up in missions and usually being the ones to cover the teams front and back when they go on foot.

Shiro

Starting with Shiro, now we have a curious case in that, sadly, we dont have a lot of moments with Shiro and more with Kuron, but since Lance always thought Kuron was Shiro i'm not going to split them.

In the first episode, one of the first things we are told about Shiro is how he is, in Lance's words "a legend" between pilots and his personal hero.

He expresses bewilderment at the Garrison's treatment of Shiro.

And saving him becomes a proper motivator for them to infiltrate after they discover he is there.

Later, when Shiro thanks them for helping in his rescue, Lance glances for a moment at Shiro's new arm, then smiles softly and follows the handshake.

And lastly, Lance is the one who refers to Shiro as their leader even before Allura assigned him to Black.

These little interactions through the first episode are meant to tell us how much Lance admires Shiro and how high he thinks of him.

This does change how they interact but that doesnt erase the fact that Lance still tries to care for him in his own way.

When they capture Sendak and try to see into their memories the paladins gather around to wait, Shiro being the most interested for obvious reasons but it takes too long and one by one all the paladins start to leave. Coran and Lance being the last ones.

Shiro decides to stay and Lance asks him to let them all know if something happens looking a bit concerned before leaving.

Gonna leave it here but what follows is also quite interesting.

It does make me sad that we dont have as many moments with Shiro and Hunk but what we have it's worth mentioning

keith: gay as hell but hasnt exactly processed or accepted it (just knows hes scared of women) (for many reasons), transgender (will respond to anything besides feminine pronouns n such), most likely did his own piercings dont ask how or why, allura is the only woman thus far hes comfortable with because she reminds him of a certain someone, allura and him r huge gossips, jack of all trades but really does not know what hes good at like he doesnt know a thing about himself (one time lance challenged him to try out his sniper bc they got into an argument and keith was surprisingly good at it, he was evidently more confused than lance somehow?) (think that one family guy audio where s liek "how r u doing that" "i dunno ;;; O_O"), if you ask him ANYTHING about himself he will most likely just say "yeah i dont rememebr" or "I dont know", often talks very old school and "retro" (in lance's words), surprisingly a decent cook/baker, not as good as hunk of course but can keep up, despite this it was revealed in a conversation with hunk that keith was eating glass among other inedible things while going crazy in the desert (his feral era <3), can diy explosives among other things and no one acknowledges it because it scares them, this boy is very autistic, audhd in fact, im right and you all know it allura: lesbian but doesnt realize it just yet, would probably love the idea of neo/xenopronouns she'd find them whimsical, surprisingly prefers moths over butterflies (mainly after a talk she and keith had one night), huge gossip and loves romance but not in a "i need to date a man" way but "i want to play cupid" (think mabel from gravity falls) (she did have a phase of being boy crazy but that quickly went away when she was brought out of stasis), she loves dressing up but mainly dresses down and more casually because she doesnt go out as much thanks to altea going kaput and all that, she adores gardening and likes to make dyes and such from her flowers, huge diy queen (TRUSTT) she can sew and all that, probably real crafty, keith and allura are close friends and both extremely out of touch with normal human people, she frequently asks him for advice due to their closeness and they just make eachother worse /aff, unironically used wicked in a sentence and was very proud of it (lance almost threw keith out of an airlock for this one), not the best cook but tries her best and is fairly confident with her skills (vicecore if you play alchemy stars) (keith almost banned her from the kitchen) (they agreed on supervised kitchen hours)

pidge: aroace and agender, literally a chronically online cosplayer tech nerd, probably has been cancelled multiple times to the point where matthew had to take every piece of tech they had in the house, has doxxed people before, obsessed with vocaloid and anime, wants to get piercings really bad but their parents wont let them, uses any pronouns and if you ask for their gender they will change their answer everytime or answer with something silly like "the void", their favorite person is Hunk but beyond that prefers robots and tech as their companions, keith is their favorite victim of pranks (save him), the only one who isnt scared of keith even a little bit, evil scientist coded, too smart for their own good, not very socially smart and misses social cues but doesnt really care, very picky about the food they consume, iconic 13-14 year old who is a bit too excited at the prospect of having an excuse to build weapons

someone, either lance or keith, makes a mental or verbal comment about how weird it is that the black lion is *this* conflicted between choosing literally anyone else over ZARKON--- a guy who has enslaved more than half the universe. who has wiped out trillions of species and sucked the life from dozens of planets and solar systems. how he doesnt really know if he can trust the lions judgement at *all* if the head of voltron is willing to listen to zarkon of all people.

in se 2 ep 13 allura doesnt get that stupidly random ability to absorb haggars attacks for exactly this episode and this episode alone. instead they destroy the komar in a more reasonable way. like dodging one of haggars attacks and having her accidentally damage it, actually damaging it themselves (bomb, just hitting it, etc), or by the lions. theres a fucking battle going on like a couple yards away. aint no way no stray fire isnt hitting that machinery.

zarkon actually fucking dies in that explosion because come the fuck on get real. for this reason this battle occurs much later in the timelaline than it does in the show. haggar and the druids still operate like hes alive, just very wounded, but it's just to keep the empire from crumbling until they can contact lotor.

keith does not leave for the blades. at all. he finds out about his heritage through them but he stays with voltron as the RED lion bc theres NO MUSICAL LIONS IN THIS FUCKING HOUSE. he still goes to the quantum abyss with krolia but it wasnt as a blade member, it was for a high stakes coop mission gone wrong. shiro was recovered by this point so they still operate with only 4 lions for the few weeks they think he was gone for.

allura still presses the idea of a replacement, much to keiths upset, but they dont try anyone in the castje because theyre all already piloting a lion or the castle. can you tell im being salty

voltron as a concept becomes less popular than the voltron Lions, as voltron doesmt make an appearance for many months.

i just need to point out how funny it is that lotor needs to surround himself with a posse of strong women bc otherwise hes useless

and again keith is still defacto leader as the right hand. he still pushes them after lotor when they cant handle it--but not because theyre in new lions. theyre all still shaken up from the fight with zarkon, esp keith. hunks the one who isnt moving fast enough when being fired at. allura isnt just fucking off with the blue lion so theyre all atill able to fight pretry well, it goes fast but they cant form voltron so he gets disappointed and leaves

their sensors being fucked with is really what causes the downfall. keith rushes ahead in red and disrupts the communication. pidge takes a hit and hunk goes back, lance staying with keith to comvince him to turn back.

Kosmo I was just thinking,,, paladins and phone cases. Lance the bi king that he is has a clear plastic one,,,, but with his whole life shoved in the back. We're talking ID, credit cards, social security no, expired blockbuster card,,, the whole shebang. Keith does't have a phonecase at all and is missing a whole corner piece from his phone and the front glass is entirely shattered.Shiro has a flip case with a piece of paper with his contact details incase it gets lost, and constantly tells keith about the benefits of having 360° protection. Hunk has one with a squishy pusheen like cat on the back. and then i feel like Pidge would have a 2000s flip phone with just Coleen and Sam's no. because she "doesnt trust google".

Coran doesn't have a phone and Allura's is one of the glittery ones you get from Claire's

literally all of this so true kdjsksj but also i feel like pidge would probably just make their own little device instead of a phone bc they're a genius like that <3 and coran might not have a phone at first but imo he would be the type that gets one just bc he wants to be included on the group chat they all have :) he loves finding all kinds of funky cases so he's always changing it to something new!! much like allura, except for her, it's more like every so often she'll just walk past a shop window and a new pretty phone case will catch her eye and she can't help herself <3

lance went out of his way to reach keith that day

he needed affirmation and he /trusted/ keith with that

he knew that if he went to him he would feel better

and that feels natural for them. keith doesnt find it weird that lance found him he greets him normally like he expected him (before he looks at him that is lmao)

keith knows about lance's insecurities he was the only one we've seen talk it over with lance and he did such a better job than in season 3

he basically mentioned every single thing lance felt insecure about

we're gonna do it with the lance that's /the paladin of the red lion/ : lance felt insecure about his place in the team and keith basically told him that he is the red paladin

the lance that's got my back : keith shows how much he trusts him even with his own life

and the lance who /knows exactly who he is/ : parallels to lance's "im just a boy from cuba" keith tells him he is more than that

/and what he's got to offer/ : lance constantly feels like he can't offer anything to the team that he is the 7th wheel which parallels with the 2nd season as well as when he said "i dont have anything to offer"

keith knows he didnt say enough that day when lance came to him and he made it right

we know keith is the loner he likes being alone yet at a time that he maybe felt like he wanted to be my himself he easily accepted lance to enjoy it with him

a conversation that would originally start with banter maybe keith making fun of lance's clothes ended up to be one of the deepest conversations between them which shows how much growth they had

they trust each other so much

lance could have gone to hunk about this, his best friend, but he went to keith because he trusts he will help even knowing that keith isnt that great with words

both pairs had deep conversations about their fears and their dreams while watching the sunset

even the filming of it was similar just look at this (the hunk and shay pics arent perfect but i couldnt find better ones)

the went from rivals that would antagonise each other with the first opportunity (keith asking lance what he is wearing, we expect him to make fun of lance he doesnt) , to teammates who trusted each other in the battlefield (the lance who's got my back), to friends (lance seeks keith out keith isnt even surprised to see him there)

Pidge pt 2

Continuing Pidge's part, we already talked about Lance being protective of his team, and the soft spot he has for Pidge.

It's something we can see in the space mall episode. Where Pidge starts scolding Lance about not looking for the scaultrite only to then get distracted by a videogame.

Interestingly, she relies on Lance to tell her if the price is a lot and if they have the money.

Lance does give her a bit of an annoyed look, but willingly goes to help Pidge get the money.

Again, she relies on him to keep track of their budget and get the last coin. It does remind me a bit to the comic where she asked Lance to keep her informed of upcoming treats.

Back to the episode they end up buying their game and Kaltenecker joins the team.

We don't see them playing together in the show (only Lance) but Lance's Paladin Handbook does mention it.

Lance also adds how he is going to bring her peanut butter cookies the next time they hang out.

The last thing I wanted to mention was how genuinely happy he looks at seeing Pidge interact with Matt and how proud he looks when he hears about Pidge's upgrade.

In the middle pic you could even say his fond expression looks like Matt's own.

And while she may tease him a lot, all of this does tell us that she does trust him enough to follow his lead and rely on him for outside information and feels safe enough to cling to him when they were drifting in space for example.

Hunk

As the original Legs, Lance and Hunk serve as a steady foundation for the team. While Lance deals more with the realm of feelings and in his own way guiding his team members like a gentle current to ensure they go in the same direction.

Hunk is more like the ground they stand in, firm, reliable and stable, I remember an interview that described Hunk as "the guy in the horror movie who tells you to NOT go downstairs", basically he is their common sense

And as the legs, they had a friendship that went way back before voltron, one that is stable and sadly, doesnt develop a lot.

But even then, you can clearly see their closeness in how comfortable they are. Both are the most touchy feeling members of the team and they do seem to seek the other for that contact.

Hunk in particular seems to enjoy hugging Lance in emotional moments.

And in the comics he seeks out Lance for romantic advice.

And speaking of this interaction, Lance is usually the one to tell Hunk to relax.

Sometimes he can be snappy about it.

And other times he will try to calm Hunk with more hard facts or pessimistic thinking

But even if he sounds pessimistic Lance does try to keep Hunk from spiralling and sometimes taking the team morale with him.

And thats another thing, Hunk doesnt seem to take teasing or harsh words to heart. Which may be a contribuiting factor in his friendship with Lance because these two are surprisingly snippy to the other.

Lance will shut down Hunk's anxious ramblings very quickly and Hunk will tease Lance about his intelligence and love life.

The only time we saw Lance get really annoyed with Hunk to the point the later apologized was when he was teasing him about writing a letter to one of his garrison crushes on earth instead of his family.

But even if Hunk takes most teasing lightly that doesnt mean Lance does most of the time (specially if its against another member of the team)

At this point I just accepted all the paladin sections are going to be 2 parts. That actually makes me happy since I thought Hunk's section was going to be shorter

Not a request, but a question (unless you want to make HCs for it): When Alpha!Keith left his Alpha and Half-Altean!Omegas (Allura, Lance and Reader) to join the BOM, what do you think would happen during the time when (Insert-dynamic)!Lotor joins Votron? Would Allura be protective of her omegas from him or would something similar happens like in the show (up to the discovery about the other Alteans thanks to Keith’s return with his mother, Krolia)?

• Lotor is an Alpha, no ifs and or buts.

• Galran dynamic culture and Altean dynamics are a little different, but they share more similarities than anything

• Allura would be VERY protective. She doesnt really trust him from the start, but when his eyes start to wander over her omegas, she stops him in his tracks

• Especially because you're still a little messed up that Keith left, you miss him so much and it's genuinely stressful.

• So she's already on edge, bc she wants you and Lance to be safe. She wants you two to be happy and she's struggling with that herself.

• The whole team can sense the tension. Shiro does end up stepping in when he can, scenting both you and Lance when Allura allows it.

• Hunk does the same when Shiros not able to help.

• She's still protective, but she slowly starts to open up to him. She warms up to him and realizes he's not all that bad

• When Lotor learns that you and blue are Alluras omegas (he's yet to find out about keith) he immediately steps back. He may come from a species of 'savages' but he's a prince. And he's respectful. He doesn't want to break anything apart.

• Allura gentles her approaches and protectiveness once she figures that out.

• His eyes are no longer to judge suitability or flirt- when he looks at the omegas he looks at them like friends and teammates

• They become friends and theres less tension which is definitely great for you and Lance because you two dont feel as stressed

• Keith has no idea that this is going on, he doesnt exactly have communication to you

• She wouldn't get chummy with him in this case (but I 100% shipped Lotor and Allura and I'm SO mad they did him like that bc he was genuinely a good guy)

• But they'd become close friends. She'd definitely trust him later on.

• Let's just pretend that the show writers didn't do him like that and they were happy :)

really? i know the racism part but i never really saw any of the worst of it i mostly stayed away from the fandom on tumblr and only followed artists on twitter so i wasnt in on any drama happening

i do know about how the fans of voltron, especially sheith fans, tended to write off hunk and lance and pidge as background characters to their ship and i think we can def agree that its bc those two were the palest male characters in the show

it sucks that hunk didnt have a bigger role looking back the show the main cast really doesnt feel like a team and more like people just forced to be together even in later episodes when they were all supposed to be close; hunk and pidge were just pushed to the back as the ‘smart characters’ that didnt get screen time but “trust me guys they were doing important techie stuff”

i wanna know what lances/the blue paladins essence is they never specified that in the first episodes. tell ya boi he needs to hear it.

keith can keep the red lion. he doesng need a leadership arc he sucks as team captain. hes not as obsessed with shiro either.

allura gets the black lion. she already is the leader!! she deserves it! also pink and black would look sick

shiro. actually i really liked his whole evil clone arc, but... my proposal is he stays dead. when he doed they were just like oh yeah lets revive him then and everything went back to normal except he didnt have a lion anymore and barely did anything thats appropriate for such a cool character. so i say: he stays dead. allura tries to rez him but fails. she only manages to keep his soul/spirit which black allows to stay in the... soul bond realm thingie. they can consort shiro within the mental link when they need to, and he gets along with the black lion and helps allura a little when she needs it

like SERIOUSLY when was the last time anyone had a casual conversation or was goofing around or talked about their emotions?? lance saying 'hey you should ditch me' and keith being 'haha what' wasnt very satisfying emotionallly and it was in season 3

lance doesnt end up with allura. seriously shes madr it clear before that she wasnt romantically interested, and that shit came out of nowhere just so lance could have something about him that matters since they forgot to give him character development

(remember the end when everyone got advice and helpful words and encouragement from the previous pilots? and lance just got 'haha take care of my daughter' instead of like. 'be your own person' or 'youre great' and all? im still salty)

make lotor less confusing. either make him betray them once and then get a redemption arc (because he and allura had a p cool dynamic and joint galra/altarian leaders would have been cool) OR make him try to win their trust once and then continue to be a shitty asshole. dont keep switching between the two.

just a few more episodes that care about the characters emotions instead of just politics and large scale battles
