Atonement Tour in Detroit with Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, and Light The Torch

So what do you want me to do? Talk about Howard Jones and his time with KSE? Or Jesse Leach? How about I don’t care? And I would much rather just talk about how really talented and professional these bands are. I like that instead. Don’t you? I mean we can go to Rock Feed or Loudwire for whatever drama that obviously doesn’t exist with these bands but clickity click clicks are all that matters. Another reason why my shift to more design-based work is where we’re heading. I don’t want to be a music news site. Ever. We are not TMZ and I could give two flying massive fucks about music drama between bands that don’t exist. Speculation runs the industry all the time and mostly is proven to be wrong in the end.

Light The Torch being on this tour just sets up everything for a Howard Jones and Killswitch Engage fan and to have the man’s killer band be the start of the night, starts the bar already higher than most tours out there. They fucking rip.

Every time I’ve seen August Burns Red live, they have had the best song selection for the house music before their set. This was no different. Songs by Pup, Have Heart, Comeback Kid, Nofx, and of course “Chop Suey” by System Of A Down.

I have to say anytime I hear “The Machinist” by Have Heart, I get like emotional and shit. It just reminds me of the first few months of the pandemic and shit. I listened to that every morning on my way to work and the discography in whole got spins throughout days at the grocery store.

Fun. Ha. Hard not to think about that as I’m masked up in the photo pit and am one of 100 may be out of 2000+ with one on. I don’t know what I care about anymore, I’m just happy to be here. The weird dichotomy that always comes up between daily life and the nightlife. What do I do when the nightlife becomes every day? Be thankful. Anyway…

There was a glitch in the matrix and right in the middle of “Invisible Enemy” The sound went dead for about a minute, and for the first probably 10-15 seconds the band kept going because the PA went out, not their in-ear monitors. The rush of the crowd going “Woooow” was pretty astounding considering I was all the way up on the upper balcony when this happened.

As for ABR, all was fine and they started the song over, even dedicating the song again to their friend.

Dude. Killswitch Engage is atop the Mt Metalcore for sure. The last time I saw them was the first time I photographed them and Adam had two knee braces then, tonight he only has one. I am proud of you. My knees are roasting right now and I’m just trying to take in the amount of bass face I’m giving this band throughout their set. They prove time and time again why they’re the best at this shit. Melodic Metalcore is their thing. Other people do it. But they don’t have Adam. And they don’t have Jesse. Or Justin or Joel or Mike. This is a pretty much dream lineup and an, even more, epic tour package. If you get a chance to see any of these bands ever in your life, take the chance. It’s worth it.

Even if it isn’t your thing, it’s worth the show, the experience, and the memory.
