Juneteenth aka Freedom Day.
Juneteenth is a centuries long, Black American commemoration day for the end of American chattel slavery, particularly for the ancestors who learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas in 1865 — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Although they're no longer in America and we're no longer culturally the same, Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, the descendants of Seminole Indians who escaped America at the tail end of the Gullah Wars (1739-1858), in Nacimiento de Los Negros, Mexico.
Up until 1997, the American flag (sewn by Grace Wisher) was the only flag Black Americans waved during the parade and overall celebration. Since then there are only two other flags that are raised and waved: the official Juneteenth flag (made by Mr. “Boston Ben” Haith) and the Black American Heritage Flag (made by Mr. Melvin Charles & Mr. Gleason T. Jackson).
Red, white, and blue. Red, black, and gold. That's it. This is not a Pan-Africanism takeover day. Keep your colonizing ethnocide to yourself and reserve it for cleansing your shit.

SN: If you're Black American and haven't done your genealogy or reached roadblocks in your tree, you can learn about lineage tracing and find some tips in this post. Much success.

My Ancestry Discovery
I recently received my results for my ancestry DNA test. One of the main reasons is because I wanted to be able have a tie to ancestrial work. My family on my mother's side was told we are indigenous, but that isn't enough information to go on. Even if I knew what tribe exactly etc, it is still closed practice and I have no one to teach me.
The information I received shows my ancient ancestors were mainly in Nigeria and Camaroon which means they most likely practiced Yoruba or Vudoun. In order to practice and work with the Orisha (the Yoruba "deities"), I would have to be initiated, which I cannot be. I have instead chosen to devote a part of my life to recognizing them (though they may not recognize and work with me in return due to me not being initiated).
The Orisha I found that stood out to me are Orunmila, Osanyin, Yemoja, and Oya.
Orunmila is the Orisha of knowledge, wisdom, divination and prophecy.
Osanyin is the Orisha of herbs, healing, magic and protection.
Yemoja is the Orisha of motherhood, water, moon and creation.
Oya is the Orisha of winds, change, revolution, and death/rebirth.
These are areas of my current practice that I feel drawn to. Does this mean I practice the Yoruba religion? No, I can't perform the rites or rituals of Yoruba religions, but I can incorporate those attributes of the Orisha into my life as a connection to my ancestors who did practice.
The first thing I did was to learn about the practices in the Yoruba religion online and in books (waiting for the books I requested to reach my library). I is great to read how connected to the energy of the earth and universe this practice is. That is how I found the Orisha that I gravitated toward.
Now I understand that all of this is more than likely on the surface. Like how a person might gravitate towards a celebrity, but that celebrity doesn't even know they exist. The person buys merchandise with the celebrity's face on it and quotes things they say, but ultimately it's for them as a person because there really is no connection to the ACTUAL celebrity. -- I get that --
When I get excited about things, I like to create. So after researching, I created divination cards with the Orisha I liked. These are for me. Unless I am ever initiated, I would not sell them for others to use without the understanding that I am not a practicing Yoruba initiate. The cards, though they have representations of the Orisha, really channel my own energy and connection with the elements/lunar energy.
I will not write about them on my @stardustnsorcery blog since this is personal subject and that blog is a business blog.
I will write more about the deck soon, but for now I am happy to have found something in my ancestry that connects me to more that just living in America over the last 300 or so years.

People take so much pride in their lineage that they forget that there is another chain of lineage running in parallel apart from the bloodline - the spiritual lineage. I'm more interested in uncovering that instead of tracing the obvious family trees where we acquaint ourselves with our forefathers and ancestors. Every time a Prophet died or was killed, there took birth a hundred champions of truth. Every time the truthful died or were killed, a thousand martyrs were born. Everytime a martyr achieved martyrdom, an entire revolution gets sparked and shifts the very course of human history. I'm interested in that spiritual lineage which never gets broken or disconnected. Everytime a noble spirit departs this earth, there takes place a replacement because the affairs of this universe will go into chaos, were it not for the existence of goodness in human souls. So before you trace back your origin to Adam, please weigh yourself to see - are you representing the spirit of Abel or are you continuing the legacy of Cain...

Learnt about a new marvel comic character, his name is Lineage. He's one of people who got turned into an inhuman because of the T-bomb.
He's the purple guy in the middle, the dudes behind him are his sons who are actually dead but I thought they looked cool so I drew them anyway, because it's my drawing and I CAN.
Just think of this as one the alternative marvel earths where the whole family is alive and they're an inhuman mob or something.

been a while, but i'm back on that bookbinding horse :)
fic: because i said so by ruth baulding, bound as a three-part bradel for my dear friend @brambleberrycottage.
this was my first time doing edge decoration and handsewn endbands (minus the practice textblock i played around on). very happy about how closely i was able to match the edge colors to the cover. initially didn't love doing the endbands (read: i almost gave up and switched to a different method), but my raging perfectionism and obstinate urge to "learn it the Real way" pushed me through my annoyance and i ended up enjoying the process later.
this fic takes place mostly on or near the ocean, hence the frothy waves on the cover. the typeset is simple and not particularly design-y, but i do like the title page.
same disclaimer as always applies here - i do this for fun; no money has been made from this project!

Damaged Roots
I was brought forth with an open wound,
Embroidered within me;
A past that would never truly heal.
Bequeathed from a generation to another,
On goes a scar with us as a host;
We shall never truly recover.

I had a question about something I had always thought of as odd is in Kuroshitsuji. Ciel and Elizabeth had been betrothed since childhood, and that on its own isn’t that weird. But then I remember that Vincent married Rachel (who is not related to him like Ciel and Lizzie are) for love and they didn’t even meet until they were older, and the same is presumed for Frances and Alexis. Do you think that there might be any plot related reasons for why the Phantomhive family (particularly Vincent and Frances who likely arranged for this) would have chosen to have those two marry? Perhaps anything related to their lineage?
Reasons for marriages
Well, let's back up... slightly... about why Vincent and Rachel get married. I'm not saying they don't love each other, because they definitely do. It's just that I'm not exactly sold on the idea that's the only reason he proposes and she accepts. At the time, and particularly among the nobility and royalty, marriages are pretty much never just for love; they are nearly always strategic... and it's just wonderful if there's also a love connection.
Someone like Vincent Phantomhive, the queen's watchdog, has to choose a wife wisely. She doesn't necessarily have to be in the best physical health, but she must have certain qualities, especially regarding personality and intelligence. They meet in the first place through her father, who probably counts among the "evil nobles" already. I've said this... somewhere, quite some time ago... that Vincent probably makes it known he's looking for a wife, and everyone in his network makes suggestions. He agrees to meet the ones that sound the most promising. Of course, his associates with young maiden relatives are going to try to get them married into the Phantomhive family, unless it would be too much of a peerage downgrade.
That said, Rachel's father probably would have been okay with Vincent choosing either of his daughters. It's just that it was definitely customary to marry off the oldest daughter first. Besides, I think Angelina is about 15 when Rachel is 17/18. Vincent canonically (because Yana-san says so) is already self conscious about the age gap between himself and Rachel -- about 6 years. So, it really puts things into perspective how unrealistic Angelina is to ever think she might have a chance with Vincent. He is nice to her but probably sees her as a kid, and he speaks to her in third person just like Rachel does. Like "Angelina's hair is lovely...", etc. to her, not to someone else about her.
Anyway, Vincent meets with Rachel a few times, where they get to know each other better, and they decide they are a good match. More importantly, Vincent must decide that she fits all his criteria... whatever that might entail. Then, given the formalities of the time, Vincent asks Rachel's father for his permission to propose.
For Francis/Frances and Alexis, it seems they meet during a fencing challenge... where she clearly prevails. And he falls madly in love with her, not just for her skill but also presumably because she's beautiful. After that, I have to assume he woos her until she accepts his proposal. Her mother is dead by then, and her father is... well... I think Alexis is led to believe that her father is also dead. They likely don't ask for anyone's approval... besides perhaps Vincent, with him being official head of the family by then, and he has no particular reason to say no. She gets bumped up in the peerage, too, so it's a bonus.
With Ciel and Lizzie, yes. I think there is a strategic reason for betrothing them... which probably happens as soon as the twins are born, if not before. It strengthens family ties, financially, etc... but it could also be a matter of special lineage -- say, a known reaper in the direct line of both kids. And Lizzie, from a very young age, is being trained to be the perfect wife of the queen's watchdog; that's something else her mom and Vincent might have planned as early as possible.
Notice that we've never heard about a betrothal for Edward. It could be that he's also betrothed and we've simply never heard, since it's not important to the story. Or it could be they didn't bother to arrange a marriage for him, since the Phantomhives don't have any daughters -- this would strengthen the idea that Ciel and Lizzie's betrothal is strategic. Personally, I hope he gets to marry for love... and I hope he ends up with Paula, despite the fact she's not in the peerage. He could raise her status, and that would be nice. Honestly, I hope that... after all this is over... Lizzie gets to find someone for herself and marry for love.

Matthew Henson, the first person to reach the North Pole
“The lure of the arctic is tugging at my heart. To me the trail is calling! The old trail, the trail that is always new.” —Matthew Henson
In 1909 a team of six men on dog sledges made their way to a single point at the center of vast Arctic wilderness. It was a block of ice 413 nautical miles off the coast of Greenland believed to be the North Pole. There were many who refuted the events that led up to the day, April 6th, when an American flag was planted there. But in the years that followed an irrefutable truth would be revealed. The first person to stand on top of the world was a Black man named Henson.
When Commander Robert Edwin Peary set out on the expedition his company included 24 men, 19 sledges, and 133 dogs. After months of travel across an immense field of ice from the edge of Cape Sheridan on Ellesmere Island, as planed, one by one members of the party began turning back. So there were only a handful of men who could substantiate the claim. When the first human footprints were pressed into the snow at the most northern point on the planet all that remained of the original corps were Peary, 40 dogs, four native Inuit hunters and a Black American man who would be forgotten by history for almost half a century. [...]
Although Peary was the public face of their partnership, Henson was the front man in the field. With his skills as a carpenter and craftsman, Henson personally built and maintained all of the sledges used on their expeditions. He was fluent in the Inuit language and established a rapport with the native people of the region. He was known by all he encountered as “Matthew the Kind One.” Henson learned the methods the Inuit used to survive and travel through the incredibly hostile landscape of the Arctic. He was a very capable hunter, fisherman, and dog handler. And it was he who trained even the most experienced of Peary’s recruits on each of the eight attempts they made to reach the North Pole.

For over a century, polar historians have generally agreed that American Navy engineer Robert Peary was the first person to reach the Geographic North Pole. But studies made over the last several decades assert that it was actually Peary’s Black American associate, Matthew Henson, who got there ahead of him – despite losing eight of his toes to frostbite.
Peary’s much-studied and much-contested 1909 expedition to the North Pole was the last of eight and the only one to achieve its ultimate objective. And though the man’s claim to have made it to the pole first (or at all) was disputed from the start, it was only more recently that polar scholars began sliding Henson into his place.
Some of these scholars, such as British explorer Wally Herbert, science journalist John Noble Wilford, and City Journal editor John Tierney, focused chiefly on the veracity of Peary’s claim to have reached the pole, citing the lack of essential data in his notebook. But some subsequent studies indicate Peary knowingly stole the credit from Henson.

Did I mention he wrote an autobiography, A Negro Explorer at the North Pole: The Autobiography of Matthew Henson, and Taraji P. Henson is great-great cousins with this once hidden figure? 😏

God, may I never blend into them.
Mark me apart.
Let my path be strange,
my spirit untamed,
my voice an echo of something they’ll never understand.
For You did not carve me in their image
You called me from the lineage of the 144,000.
I was not sent to fit in.
I was sent to remember.
And I walk in that remembrance,
pure and unwavering,
with the seal upon me,
I heard your calling.
I heard the bells,
and I arose.

Dragonborn-Dwarf
The Dragonborn-Dwarves are a rare and powerful hybrid lineage, blending the indomitable strength and tenacity of the dragonborn with the resilience and craftsmanship of the dwarves. They are a race born from fire and stone, with an innate drive to forge their own path, often rejecting the constraints of tradition and authority.
Dragonborn-Dwarves combine the sturdy, stocky build of their dwarven ancestry with the striking features of their dragonborn lineage. Their broad shoulders and muscular frames make them imposing figures, and they often possess dragon-like scales, which may vary in color depending on their specific draconic bloodline. Their faces are typically square-jawed with deep-set eyes, and their hair is thick, usually in dark shades, framing their faces in a rough-and-ready style that matches their no-frills attitude.
Dragonborn-Dwarf Traits
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1. Age. Dragonborn-Dwarves reach adulthood at 20 years and can live up to 350 years. Size. Dragonborn-Dwarves are Medium, typically standing between 4 and 5 feet tall.
Draconic Resistance. Choose one of the following damage types: Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Poison. You have resistance to damage of that type. Dwarven Resilience. You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance to poison damage. Dragon's Fury. When you score a critical hit, you can add extra damage equal to your Strength modifier, representing the unleashed power of your draconic heritage.

Me causing trouble in my Intro to Judaism class:
So, we were discussing how traditionally in Judaism, you are Jewish if your mother is. The Reform movement declared in 1983 that you could be considered Jewish if either parent was Jewish and you were raised Jewish. To be clear, this is controversial and not accepted in more conservative groups.
Anyways! I threw the monkey wrench into the discussion like this: many if not most Jews outside of Orthodox Judaism are egalitarian and do not dictate actions based upon gender identity. These spaces are often inclusive of trans people. Even some Orthodox spaces are trans inclusive.
I also understand that traditionally adopted babies need to convert but I don’t know if that’s all denominations.
Anyways! Leads us to the question: can you still depend on a mother being Jewish if you’re egalitarian? What about interfaith couples with two moms? What about a trans woman and a trans man marrying and having a child?
Even if you’re going to put the distinction on the birthing parent, what about IVF or surrogate parents? What if the surrogate was Jewish but only the father in the couple whose genetic material was involved? What would happen if technology allowed us to fully gestate a child outside a womb or take genetic material from two or more parents or even two amab individuals (sexually male).
I am very certain that there are Jews who have started asking or these questions and I’m curious what some of these people are proposing.
Anyways, here’s an update on my trouble making conversion journey ❤️
