A man checked out dozens of books on Jewish history and other marginalized topics from a public library in a heavily Jewish Cleveland suburb before filming himself apparently setting fire to them, local authorities said.
Local Jewish leaders decried the incident at the Beachwood Public Library, appearing alongside other interfaith leaders at a press conference Monday outside a local church to denounce the burnings.
“Whoever perpetuated the idea that you can burn us out of Cleveland, deport us out of Cleveland, deny our ideas or press us and frighten us, picked the wrong community,” Rabbi Robert Nosanchuk of Congregation Mishkan Or, a Reform synagogue in Beachwood, said at the press conference.
The books the man burned included a copy of “The Diary of Anne Frank” and a title dealing with “Jewish Solidarity,” a researcher with Princeton University’s Bridging Divides Initiative told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. The Princeton lab, which tracks political violence, first flagged the man’s video with the library after seeing it on the social network X.
The researcher, who requested anonymity owing to the nature of the group’s work, described the book selection as “something that you would expect of someone that is going into the library and trying to get books about Jewish authors and the Holocaust and everything.” In addition, the man had also burned books related to Black and LGBTQ topics.
“I think the act of targeting these materials, burning them, carries specific threatening connotations with it,” the researcher noted.
The Princeton lab had first seen the video on an account affiliated with the white-supremacist group White Lives Matter Ohio, which appeared to have since removed it. Local media also reported that material related to the burnings had made its way to the social network Gab, which is popular with extremists. JTA could not independently locate the video; local clergy told media they were deliberately not circulating it, in an effort to tamp down on its influence.
The book-burning incident appeared to be an unusual local manifestation of a simmering culture war over books reflecting diversity, one that has occasionally ensnared Jewish books and has lately been folded into the Trump administration’s push against diversity initiatives.

Wedding Bells Or Separations?
James Wilson x Female Reader
Summary: Something has changed between Wilson and the head of the Pediatrics Department. House is feeling bored and decides to investigate.
TW: Fluff, House (Warning in itself), talk of weddings/pregnancy/breast size.
House walked into the cafeteria, scanning the room until his bright blue eyes located Wilson and L/N. They sat in the same side of a booth with Wilson's arm wrapped around her shoulder as they ate lunch together. Her legs were crossed, high heeled shoe bobbing up and down slowly underneath the table. L/N's body was angled towards Wilson as they talked, her hand resting on his thigh.
They were close. Too close.
Something was off in their relationship, it was like the dynamic had changed overnight. House made his way across the room, sliding into the booth across from them, "What's new with my favorite couple?" House asked, grabbing a fry from L/N's plate.
"We're good. How are you, House?" L/N asked.
"Bored," House stated, chewing the fried potato.
"God, help us all," Wilson muttered.
L/N smiled, shaking her head slightly as she picked up a french fry from her plate.
"What has peaked your interest for today then, House?" L/N asked, biting into the fry.
"I wouldn't ask that," Wilson suggested.
L/N shrugged, shifting closer to Wilson's side as her hand slid down his thigh towards his knee.
"Your breasts look amazing," House stated, eyes flickering down to the top of her dress.
L/N let out a disbelieving scoff, "Wow, that's definitely not what I was expecting you to say," She said.
"I would appreciate it if you didn't comment on the appearance of my girlfriend's breasts," Wilson said.
"The sudden uprising of those beautifully sculpted, perky fun-bags could be a gift courtesy of a new push-up bra or it could be due to first trimester hormones," House continued, choosing not to acknowledge Wilson's comment.
"I am not pregnant, House," L/N said.
"Your mood swings are doing little to convince me, but the fact that you haven't gained any weight-," "Be careful how you finish that sentence, House," L/N said firmly.
"I'll drop the topic completely if you take a pregnancy test," House offered, grabbing another fry from her plate.
"I am not pregnant," L/N repeated.
"Pee in a cup then," House argued.
She huffed, "James, help me," L/N said.
"She is not letting you test her urine. Forget it, House," Wilson stated firmly.
"Fine... But something has changed between you two and I'm going to find out what it is," House said.
"Whatever you say, House," Wilson said, taking a drink from his coffee cup.
...
House walked through the hallways of Princeton-Plainsboro with Cameron, Chase and Foreman following closely behind him. House narrowed his eyes slightly when he saw Wilson and L/N standing at the nursing station. She smiled at something he said, scribbling something down in her patient file before tucking her pen into the pocket of her lab coat. L/N turned to face him, hands raising up to adjust his green tie.
"Get an MRI and come find me when you see the abscess that's killing him," House ordered.
"But shouldn't we-" "Scram, kiddos, daddy has some work to do," House said.
He broke off from the group, approaching Wilson and L/N, "You haven't worn that god-awful tie since before your divorce," House stated.
"Nice to see you too, House," Wilson sighed.
"Either you're pregnant, you're engaged or you're breaking up and overcompensating," House listed.
"She is not pregnant, House," Wilson said.
"Then that just leaves wedding bells or separations... But you're too smart to be overcompensating because you know that I would be able to tell the difference," House said, eyeing the pair suspiciously.
"Let it go, House. We're happy," Wilson said.
"Too happy. It's an anomaly," House stated.
"My god, is he always this exhausting?" L/N questioned.
"Tiredness... Pregnancy is back on the board," House said.
L/N sighed, "I'm going back to work. See you at dinner," L/N said, grabbing her file and pressing a quick kiss to Wilson's cheek before walking off.
"Please, let it go, House," Wilson said after she was out of earshot, taking his own file and leaving House to his thoughts.
...
Wilson and L/N sat across from each other in the dimly lit restaurant. He laughed at something she said before lifting his wine glass to his lips. L/N's smile suddenly fell as she looked up at something behind him.
"Is everything okay?" Wilson asked, turning to look. He huffed when he saw House making his way over to them.
Wilson turned back to L/N, "I am so sorry about whatever he's going to do or say," Wilson said.
"I know," She smiled.
"Hey, guys! I didn't know you'd be here tonight. Small world," House smiled, pulling up a chair and sitting at their table.
"Wine? Pretty irresponsible to drink while pregnant," House mused.
L/N sighed, taking a sip from her glass before setting it down on the table.
House's eyes zeroed in on the folder on the corner of the table.
"Dinner and a consult? Way too fancy a place for that," House said, reaching for the folder.
L/N rested her hand on top of it, "House, can we please talk about this another time?" L/N asked.
"Show me what's in the file," House said.
L/N sighed, eyes locking with Wilson's across the table. He nodded, L/N picked up the file and held it out to House.
He took the folder from her hand and flipped it open, eyes scanning across the various photos and documents.
"Flowers, venues, colors, foods, cake... You're getting married?" House asked, looking up at Wilson and L/N.
She lifted the chain from around her neck, revealing the engagement ring that had been hidden by the neckline of her dress.
House stared at the jewlery in silence, "You're engaged," He stated.
"I proposed two weeks ago," Wilson admitted.
"You kept this hidden from me for two weeks? I'm impressed," House said, eyes dropping back down to the file.
"I'd go with pink and grey," House said, flipping the file closed and holding it out to L/N.
She took the folder, "Enjoy your dinner," House said, standing up from his chair and making his way out of the restaurant.

Jaroslav Cermak (Czech, 1831-1878) Montenegrin Women in a Harem, 1877 National Gallery Prague Slavery gave rise to the figure of the Odalisque, that is the beautiful, white slave girl, a figure of quintessential beauty. In the late 18th century Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, the father of physical anthropology, the father of scientific anthropology, an 18th century German scholar, assigned the name Caucasian to the people living in western Europe, to the River Ob in Russia to northern Africa, and to India. He called the people in Europe, over to India, well into Russia and North Africa, Caucasians because they were the most beautiful in the world. Blumenbach enjoyed a scholarly reputation that gave his designation enormous heft and it got picked up very quickly. Immanuel Kant stated that the Caucasians, the Georgians, the Circassians, sell their children, particularly their girls to the Turks, the Arabs, and the Persians, for reasons of eugenics, that is, to beautify the race. Before the Atlantic slave trade to the western hemisphere shaped our ideas about what slave trades are all about, there was slave trade from this part of the world, that goes back to before the reaches of time. Herodotus writing in the fifth century BC, writing about the enumeration of taxes and tributes paid to the Persian kingdom, collected from the lands it had controlled and the lands even far away in the distance. He said that the voluntary contribution was taken from the Colchians, that is the Georgians, and the neighboring tribes between them and the Caucasus, and it consisted of and still consists of (that is in the 5th century BC) every fourth year 100 boys and 100 girls. This was before Herodotus could even see the beginnings of it. Herodotus also mentioned the tribute from the southern most part of the edges of the Persian world and that was for the people called Ethiopians, what they owed was gold and ivory, people were not mentioned. So, the Black Sea Slave trade was the slave trade in the western world until the 15th century when the Ottomans captured Constantinople and cut the Black Sea off from western Europe. At that point, 15th century, the Atlantic slave trade becomes the western slave trade. Daniel Edward Clarke, our Cambridge don, also located Circassian beauty, in the enslaved. “The Cicassians frequently sell their children to strangers, particularly to Persians and Turkish Seraglios.” He speaks of one particular Circassian female who was 14, who was conscious of her great beauty, who feared her parents would sell her according to the custom of the country. The beautiful young slave girl became a figure, and she had a name; Odalisque. She combines the powerful notions of beauty, sex, and slavery. Ingres, Jerome, Powers and Matisse specialized in Odalisque paintings. The figure of the Odalisque faded from memory as the Black Sea slave trade ended in the late 19th century, and the Atlantic slave trade overshadowed that from the Black Sea. Today, the word slavery invariably leads to people of African descent. Americans seldom associate the word Odalisque with with slavery in the Americas. Today many American painters use Odalisque figures, Michalene Thomas for instance who has done a series of what she calls American Odalisque. But the phrase and the figure of the Odalisque has lost its association with slavery. And now in American art history and in contemporary American art, Odalisque simply refers to a beautiful woman, usually unclothed. If you want to learn more, listen to professor Nell Painter of Princeton University in the YT lecture “Why White People are Called Caucasian.”

House gets sued by a patient. Again
At this point is a normal occurrence at the hospital, something that happens at least once a month. But this time it's different, because every single one of the lawyers that work for the Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital refused to work for House. They are not falling for that again, oh no.
So now Dr Cuddy is running up and down trying to find someone who can and is willing to take that case. She finally finds someone, a young freelancer graduate of an important boarding school with an interesting history, son of the owner of one of the biggest law firms of the whole country, who decided to go solo after renouncing to an inheritance with more zeros that anyone in the hospital could even imagine for unknown reasons. He was perfect for the job.
And he also accepted it, which was probably the hardest part
Everyone was scared of what could happen when the new lawyer (what was his name again? Nox? Krow?) would meet Dr. House, but what no one could have ever guessed was what would happen when House's partner, Dr Wilson, stepped into the room.
What happened you ask? Well, the best way to explain would be a broken glass of water, lots of shouting, confusion and Wilson's location being unknown for a whole week, which of course meant that House refused to be a functional member of the hospital until he solved his new puzzle:
How do Knox Overstreet and James Wilson know each other?
And also, who the hell is Neil?

Throwback Thursday: Masakazu Konishi was a professor of biology at Princeton University in the 1960s and 1970s. While at Princeton, he said, someone gave him three baby owls. Two survived to adulthood and he began raising owls. Konishi studied the auditory sense owls used to catch their prey, even in the dark. He theorized that sensing the difference in the time it took for sound waves to reach the right or left ear, as well as sensing the difference in the intensity heard in each ear, was what would help owls--and humans--determine the location of whatever caused the sound. He's shown here with one of his owls ca. 1971.

Service dogs can be 4-legged lifesavers, alerting to dangerous allergens, assisting with travel and making people with a wide range of disabilities safer.
But fake service dogs are taking a bite out of real service dogs’ credibility, exacerbating the challenges that people with disabilities who rely on service animals already face, advocates say. Fake service dogs are poorly trained or untrained animals falsely passed off by individuals trying to access restricted places or benefits.
Thousands of grocers and shop owners now prohibit any animals, including legitimate service dogs, from entering their stores. That's because of incidents where fraudulent service animals have "urinated on expensive furnishings, contaminated food, bitten staff, and driven away paying customers," according to Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit service dog organization headquartered in Santa Rosa, California.
About two-thirds of service dog users say the poorly trained or untrained dogs have negatively impacted their independence and quality of life, according to a 2022 survey conducted by the organization.
"Service dog fraud and poorly trained service dogs pose a widespread and serious problem regardless of location and have a powerful negative impact on legitimate service dog teams," Canine Companions for Independence said in a white paper.
Service dogs aren't required to complete a specific, national certification, according to the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division. People may also struggle to acquire the animals: They can come at significant expense and aren't necessarily covered by insurance.
The ADA National Network defines service dogs as those specially trained to perform tasks for people with physical, intellectual or mental disabilities. Such dogs are "more than just a vest," according to Assistance Dogs International, explaining on its website that such dogs offer "expert training, crucial socialization and years of task-based independence to people with disabilities."
Fake service dogs undermine freedom and safety, advocates say
Nearly 93% of respondents to the Canine Companions survey said they had encountered “fake, questionable or uncontrolled service dogs,” while 79% reported uncontrolled dogs snapping at, biting or interfering with their service dogs.
The survey was distributed to 60 organizations accredited by Assistance Dogs International throughout North America, Europe and Oceania. More than 1,500 service-dog users responded, making the study of assistance-dog fraud the organization’s largest to date.
Even if a person with a disability hasn't encountered one of the untrained or poorly trained animals in day-to-day life, it can still have a ripple effect. Skepticism about service dogs among business owners and others makes legitimate users less inclined to take service dogs out in public, the group said in its report.
"If a service dog user feels they will be denied access or that there are more poorly trained service dogs in public, they may opt to avoid public places with their service dog," the organization said. "This ostensibly has an impact on the service dog user’s independence and quality of life if doors are being shut, figuratively, before service dog teams even leave their homes."
According to NEADS World Class Service Dogs, based in Princeton, Massachusetts, properly trained service dogs can offer clients "life-changing emotional support and enable them to navigate the world more safely and confidently."
NEADS, formerly known as National Education for Assistance Dog Services, agreed that fraudulent service dogs are a growing problem in the U.S. The Canine Companions survey, the group said in a 2023 statement, shows not only the frequency of fake service dog encounters but also demonstrates "how significantly they are undermining feelings of independence, quality of life and potentially even the safety of clients with legitimate service dogs."
According to Canine Companions, loopholes in the Americans with Disabilities Act have enabled scammers to exploit the system. The group last year said it hopes to persuade lawmakers to add definitive language to the act that addresses service dog representation, making it "crystal-clear that misrepresentation of a disability for personal gain – including the use of a service dog – is against the law."
The group sought to gather 2,500 public signatures on an online petition calling for an end to service dog scams. As of April 13, 2025, a little more than 2,600 people had signed the document.
Not just advocates
One of the latest local efforts on legitimate service dogs comes from Massachusetts state Rep. Kimberly Ferguson. She proposed legislation on April 1 that would create a 17-member commission to explore tougher regulation of service animals in the state.
If created, the commission would have until April 2026 to file a report assessing the prevalence of fraudulent service dogs statewide and whether prohibition or penalization of such fraud is necessary. It would also examine the feasibility of requiring service animals to be certified, registered or licensed.
Massachusetts is one of 16 states without a "true ban" on fraudulent representation of pets as service animals, according to the Animal Legal and Historical Center at Michigan State University in East Lansing. A handful of those states still specifically prohibit misrepresentation of service animals in housing situations.

WaPo: How car bans and heat pump rules drive voters to the far right
Shannon Osaka at WaPo:
More than a decade ago, the Netherlands embarked on a straightforward plan to cut carbon emissions. Its legislature raised taxes on natural gas, using the money earned to help Dutch households install solar panels. By most measures, the program worked: By 2022, 20 percent of homes in the Netherlands had solar panels, up from about 2 percent in 2013. Natural gas prices, meanwhile, rose by almost 50 percent. But something else happened, according to a new study. The Dutch families who were most vulnerable to the increase in gas prices — renters who paid their own utility bills — drifted to the right. Families facing increased home energy costs became 5 to 6 percent more likely to vote for one of the Netherlands’ far-right parties. A similar backlash is happening all over Europe, as far-right parties position themselves in opposition to green policies. In Germany, a law that would have required homeowners to install heat pumps galvanized the far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, giving it a boost. Farmers have rolled tractors into Paris to protest E.U. agricultural rules, and drivers in Italy and Britain have protested attempts to ban gas-guzzling cars from city centers.
That resurgence of the right could slow down the green transition in Europe, which has been less polarized on global warming, and serves as a warning to the United States, where policies around electric vehicles and gas stoves have already sparked a backlash. The shift also shows how, as climate policies increasingly touch citizens’ lives, even countries whose voters are staunchly supportive of clean energy may hit roadblocks. “This has really expanded the coalition of the far right,” said Erik Voeten, a professor of geopolitics at Georgetown University and the author of the new study on the Netherlands.
Other studies have found similar results. In one study in Milan, researchers at Bocconi University studied the voting patterns of drivers whose cars were banned from the city center for being too polluting. These drivers, who on average lost the equivalent of $4,000 because of the ban, were significantly more likely to vote for the right-wing Lega party in subsequent elections. In Sweden, researchers found that low-income families facing high electricity prices were also more likely to turn toward the far right. Far-right parties in Europe have started to position themselves against climate action, expanding their platforms from anti-immigration and anti-globalization. A decade ago, the Dutch right-wing Party for Freedom emphasized that it wasn’t against renewable energy — just increasing energy prices. But by 2021, the party’s manifesto had moved to more extreme language. “Energy is a basic need, but climate madness has turned it into a very expensive luxury item,” the manifesto said. “The far right has increasingly started to campaign on opposition to environmental policies and climate change,” Voeten said.
The pushback also reflects, in part, how much Europe has decarbonized. More than 60 percent of the continent’s electricity already comes from renewable sources or nuclear power; so meeting the European Union’s climate goals means tacklingother sectors — transportation, buildings, agriculture.
[...] Some of these voting patterns have also played out in the United States. According to a study by the Princeton political scientist Alexander Gazmararian, historically-Democratic coal communities that lost jobs in the shift to natural gas increased their support for Republican candidates by 5 percent. The shift was larger in areas located farther from new gas power plants — that is, areas where voters couldn’t see that it was natural gas, not environmental regulations, that undercut coal.
Gazmararian says that while climate denial and fossil fuel misinformation have definitely played a role, many voters are motivated simply by their own financial pressures. “They’re in an economic circumstance where they don’t have many options,” he said. The solution, experts say, is todesign policies that avoid putting too much financial burden on individual consumers. In Germany, where the law to install heat pumps would have cost homeowners $7,500 to $8,500 more than installing gas boilers, policymakers quickly retreated. But by that point, far-right party membership had already surged.
The Washington Post explains what may be at least partially causing the rise of far-right extremist parties in Europe, Conservatives in Canada, and the Republicans in some parts of the US: rising energy costs that low-income people are bearing the brunt of.
In the US, right-wing hysteria about gas stove bans and electric vehicles are also playing a role.

I love the changes to Chase's background due to hiring actors. First,he goes from a 35 yo New England dude to a 20-something Australian. Then,he goes from the USA old money to being the son of a Czechoslovakian immigrant(played by a Belgian actor) for...reasons? Couldn't they hire an Australian old guy to play Rowan(and keep more or less in line with the initial idea for the character)? Why does Chase need to be half-slavic,since Rowan's actor is from Belgium? Is it more about skill and chemistry, nationality be damned? Or was simply a matter of hiring the first old white guy to show up,and toss in a random nationality to excuse the lousy Aussie accent?
It seems likely to me that they did decide "European expat" based on the casting, if only because there's no reason for Chase's father to not be Australian: that he was a famous doctor actually comes from the pre-casting Pilot script, but obviously that's not nationality based either.
As you mentioned, Bauchau is Belgian, not Czech, which makes me think the nationality choice was intentional: if they based nationality on actor, well, he'd be Belgian. This makes me think Czech is intentional, although I have no idea why: my best guess is they wanted a quick handwaving excuse on why this doctor moved to Australia to have Australian children, and Soviet Bloc is a good one that requires no elaboration.
-
I think the initial idea of the character of Chase (old money, New England) was abandoned with the casting. Not just because of Spencer's age and inability to fake an American accent, mind you.
In the original Pilot script, one of the throwaway mentions is that the hospital was in Boston. It was meant to be located in the old money New England capital, possibly associated with Harvard (they got a bit of this with Princeton, another Ivy League school). But that association? And Chase's New England routes? That's not a fucking coincidence.
I don't know how much non New Englanders know about this shit, but. Boston has / had this whole social elite class. There's this other group of vague… the Cabots. The Lowells. Thayers. Adams. Just these names associated with very rich old money families. Browse that list: there's famous politicians, famous everything. Very WASPy. Absolutely no Boston Irish Catholics in this group. (The Kennedys were also from Boston, but see 'no Catholics.') Chase, as a name, is very, very… it fits right in. Chase, a 35-year-old Old Money Nepotism hire from New England, working in a Boston hospital? He was absolutely envisioned as one of those.
And there's some fascinating subtext to that, too, because Chase was still a nepotism hire in the pilot. He's this rich, silver spoon old money guy with a Big Name… and he still needed his dad to get him the job in this reality. He's a fellow, and he's a decade older than Cameron and Foreman; hell, he's the same approximate age as House, pre-casting. He is pathetic. You know how Taub was slumming it? This Chase was way, way worse. Which could have been fascinating in its own right. Or he could have been a minor villain, the ur-example of someone Foreman has to overcome, even worse than the Chase we got in canon.
So aside from being younger and Australian, what else changed with the casting? The original pilot script doesn't have Chase's lines (from a deleted scene) about enjoying the job because he gets to date women: Chase's sluttiness came with casting. His daddy issues were implied in the original script, with the nepotism line and a line about Chase's dad being a famous doctor, but I'd say moving across the world away from him for a job has a different subtext than OG Chase's probable working in the same town as my father. It's also hard to say if OG Chase was Catholic: Boston is an American epicenter of it, but WASPS are pretty anti-Catholic by tradition; on the other hand, the Kennedys were from Boston and Catholic, and Damned if You Do was written fairly early (August 2004 according to the script), although after casting.
Spencer has also said about his audition that Chase was briefly envisioned as British (but he sucked at that accent, too), and that he helped develop the character a little and pushed for him to be Australian. We also know that Hugh Laurie and Omar Epps were older than their characters, and that the show was eager to write/rewrite things with actors in mind (I've seen it cited that Taub was made a team member specifically because the team liked Jaconson so much, and the same goes for them dragging Anne Dudek back onto the show by making Amber date Wilson and then be a ghost), so I don't think they were ever super sold on OG Chase or anything, although I do find the concept pretty fascinating.

The damage the Trump administration has done to science in a few short months is both well documented and incalculable, but in recent days that assault has taken an alarming twist. Their latest project is not firing researchers or pulling funds—although there’s still plenty of that going on. It’s the inversion of science itself.
Here’s how it works. Three “dire wolves” are born in an undisclosed location in the continental United States, and the media goes wild. This is big news for Game of Thrones fans and anyone interested in “de-extinction,” the promise of bringing back long-vanished species.
There’s a lot to unpack here: Are these dire wolves really dire wolves? (They’re technically grey wolves with edited genes, so not everyone’s convinced.) Is this a publicity stunt or a watershed moment of discovery? If we’re staying in the Song of Ice and Fire universe, can we do ice dragons next?
All more or less reasonable reactions. And then there’s secretary of the interior Doug Burgum, a former software executive and investor now charged with managing public lands in the US. “The marvel of ‘de-extinction’ technology can help forge a future where populations are never at risk,” Burgum wrote in a post on X this week. “The revival of the Dire Wolf heralds the advent of a thrilling new era of scientific wonder, showcasing how the concept of ‘de-extinction’ can serve as a bedrock for modern species conservation.”
What Burgum is suggesting here is that the answer to 18,000 threatened species—as classified and tallied by the nonprofit International Union for Conservation of Nature—is that scientists can simply slice and dice their genes back together. It’s like playing Contra with the infinite lives code, but for the global ecosystem.
This logic is wrong, the argument is bad. More to the point, though, it’s the kind of upside-down takeaway that will be used not to advance conservation efforts but to repeal them. Oh, fracking may kill off the California condor? Here’s a mutant vulture as a make-good.
“Developing genetic technology cannot be viewed as the solution to human-caused extinction, especially not when this administration is seeking to actively destroy the habitats and legal protections imperiled species need,” said Mike Senatore, senior vice president of conservation programs at the nonprofit Defenders of Wildlife, in a statement. “What we are seeing is anti-wildlife, pro-business politicians vilify the Endangered Species Act and claim we can Frankenstein our way to the future.”
On Tuesday, Donald Trump put on a show of signing an executive order that promotes coal production in the United States. The EO explicitly cites the need to power data centers for artificial intelligence. Yes, AI is energy-intensive. They’ve got that right. Appropriate responses to that fact might include “can we make AI more energy-efficient?” or “Can we push AI companies to draw on renewable resources.” Instead, the Trump administration has decided that the linchpin technology of the future should be driven by the energy source of the past. You might as well push UPS to deliver exclusively by Clydesdale. Everything is twisted and nothing makes sense.
The nonsense jujitsu is absurd, but is it sincere? In some cases, it’s hard to say. In others it seems more likely that scientific illiteracy serves a cover for retribution. This week, the Commerce Department canceled federal support for three Princeton University initiatives focused on climate research. The stated reason, for one of those programs: “This cooperative agreement promotes exaggerated and implausible climate threats, contributing to a phenomenon known as ‘climate anxiety,’ which has increased significantly among America’s youth.”
Commerce Department, you’re so close! Climate anxiety among young people is definitely something to look out for. Telling them to close their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears while the world burns is probably not the best way to address it. If you think their climate stress is bad now, just wait until half of Miami is underwater.
There are two important pieces of broader context here. First is that Donald Trump does not believe in climate change, and therefore his administration proceeds as though it does not exist. Second is that Princeton University president Christopher Eisengruber had the audacity to suggest that the federal government not routinely shake down academic institutions under the guise of stopping antisemitism. Two weeks later, the Trump administration suspended dozens of research grants to Princeton totaling hundreds of millions of dollars. And now, “climate anxiety.”
This is all against the backdrop of a government whose leading health officials are Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Mehmet Oz, two men who, to varying degrees, have built their careers peddling unscientific malarky. The Trump administration has made clear that it will not stop at the destruction and degradation of scientific research in the United States. It will also misrepresent, misinterpret, and bastardize it to achieve distinctly unscientific ends.
Those dire wolves aren’t going to solve anything; they’re not going to be reintroduced to the wild, they’re not going to help thin out deer and elk populations.
But buried in the announcement was something that could make a difference. It turns out Colossal also cloned a number of red wolves—a species that is critically endangered but very much not extinct—with the goal of increasing genetic diversity among the population. It doesn’t resurrect a species that humanity has wiped out. It helps one survive.

why did you choose these specific colours for house md de portraits? do they represent anything?
Heh heh heh YES!!! I know the backgrounds of the portraits in game might have a bit of symbolism so i wanted to do the same
I chose blue as the main color (+ the bits of orange and yellow) in Wilson's portrait to represent his patience and his ability to soothe people... like the whole thing with patients thanking him for telling them that they're going to die.... and also because i feel that its a medical color lol. that's also why there are muted blues in House's portrait
I think this one is a bit more obvious but red is the main color for House's portrait because he's quick to anger and cynical- he's also in shadow because of his inability to share his feelings with the people close to him,. Ahhh!!!
i also included the Princeton-Plainsboro logo leaves in both portraits, since i thought it would be a nice thing to add, and it represents their location. I see that if you look at the backgrounds of a lot of the portraits in de you can see details pertaining to where they're at (like the boat in the background of Joyce's portrait) so i tried to do something similar

I noticed that the stelerator coils are really particularly shaped based on their location on the ring, compared to tokomak coils. The stelerator plasma at least looks like it's in a ring of similar repeating segments, so surely there must be repeating coil shapes. Does every single coil in a segment have to be unique, or do you have shapes for the twist-over regions and then a shape you can rotate as you go through the softer twisting regions?
I'm the wrong kind of engineer for this and I'm judging entirely by looking at pictures so correct me at literally any step in this question.
Yep! Stellarators have periodicity, meaning that you have some integer number of repeating coil sets. This is easiest to see from the top view:

Source: Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics
Wendelstein 7-X (above) has five-fold symmetry, with five repeating coil sets rotated through a full 360 degrees.

Source: University of Wisconsin-Madison
Whereas HSX has four-fold symmetry...
Source: Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory
And Lyman Spitzer's earliest stellarators from the 1950's had two periods, though this was before we started doing optimized coils with those funky shapes.
Fun fact, the Lyman Spitzer who invented the stellarator was the same Lyman Spitzer who came up the Hubble Space Telescope. Back in the day you could just do whatever, I guess!

Crowsnest Highway, AB/BC
The Crowsnest Highway is an east-west highway in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. It stretches 1,161 km (721 mi) across the southern portions of both provinces, from Hope, British Columbia to Medicine Hat, Alberta, providing the shortest highway connection between the Lower Mainland and southeast Alberta through the Canadian Rockies. Mostly two-lane, the highway was officially designated in 1932, mainly following a mid-19th-century gold rush trail originally traced out by an engineer named Edgar Dewdney. It takes its name from the Crowsnest Pass, the location at which the highway crosses the Continental Divide between British Columbia and Alberta.
In British Columbia, the highway is entirely in mountainous regions and is also known as the Southern Trans-Provincial Highway. The western-most segment between the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 5A is locally known as the Hope-Princeton Highway, and passes by the site of the Hope Slide. In Alberta, the terrain is initially mountainous, before smoothing to foothills and eventually generally flat prairie in the vicinity of Pincher Creek. The highway forms part of the Red Coat Trail and the CANAMEX Corridor from Highway 2 near Fort Macleod to Highway 4 in Lethbridge. Many sections of the highway were built by Japanese labour while they were interned during the Second World War, including sections like the Hope-Princeton. This history has been preserved at a heritage marker at Sunshine Valley, which was the largest internment camp in Canada.

Princeton was just drinking milk straight from the fridge when he got a call from Cara to hang out downtown.
I thought it was just going to be the two of them, but then the taxi turned into a clown car with all of the townies running out of it. Maybe a restaurant wasn't the best choice of locations...
