Things that I can always count on, Archie & ESPN commentators and their Thomas Müller praises 😘
Archie Rhind-Tutt for FC Bayern Munich v TSG Hoffenheim ESPN+ Friday, Jan 12, 2024 Post-Match:
But the big question always is what's happening with Thomas Müller. If Thomas Müller doesn't play there will be at least one question in the press conference to Thomas Tuchel about that, so that he's on a run of starting for the team, and is still coming up with clever moments in each game, even if his body is maybe not what it was when he was a teenager for example, I think that that is something which shows you why he is a legend of the game. And when I visited the Bayern Museum [on] yesterday it was, seems so long ago. This week has been so cold. I think that there was such a big section dedicated to legend of the club such as Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mehmet Scholl, Lothar Matthäus, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Sepp Maier. And Thomas Müller is now only 20 games away from overtaking Sepp Maier, who was a goalkeeper, let's remember who played over 700 games for the club. And doing that as an outfield player, and to still be producing the ideas and being able to cut through people as he does is something that we should not take for granted, and still think this is exceptional because you look at what somebody like Jamal Musiala has, those are very different skill sets and yet, Thomas Müller maybe if, if the - it was Stanley Nsoki - hadn't quick caught up to him, he would have a goal tonight. So I think that those are the kind of topics, there are always something that the press are looking here for "hum what's not going right?" because the normal standard has been winning every single year, and that shifts the whole expectations so the rules at Bayern are very different, k? Unlike the two clubs that we support, we know that if you win, you go home and you're happy. If you win here, ---it's not quite the same.

I was looking at the list of players with the most caps for the German NT, since Thomas Müller is the player with the third most caps (131) after Miro Klose (137) and Lothar Matthäus (150).
And then I noticed something.
Among the players with between 90 and 100+ caps, you have names who had been there for what felt like an eternity. So many of our World Cup 2014 winners; the other Big 5 Lukas Podolski (130), Bastian Schweinsteiger (121), Philipp Lahm (113) and Per Mertesacker (104) who had been around since 2004; Manuel Neuer (124) and Toni Kroos (114) of course. Other legendary names like Jürgen Klinsmsnn (108), Franz Beckenbauer (103), Michael Ballack (98), Berti Vogts (96), you know the drill...
And then, one name stood out... And maybe I'm just old and have been out of football for too long and my memory is twisted, but...
How does Joshua Kimmich already have 91 caps??????????
I know he's been around for 6 years already, but... He has more caps than names like Ilkay Gündogan (82), Arne Friedrich (82), Torsten Frings (79), Mats Hummels (78), Mario Gomez (78), Sami Khedira (77)... And for some reason I can't wrap my head around it. He's 29, has four (!!!) kids, is just four years younger than me... And I still feel like he's like... 21 at most???

Emil Schäfer - Part 2
Jasta 11
Schäfer had no trouble keeping up with the other pilots and shot down his first victory within Richthofens Staffel (his second in total) a few weeks after his arrival. On 4 March 1917 he shot down two enemies in one day. On 6 March he was awarded the Iron Cross First Class. Within the squadron there was room for friendly teasing; when Schäfer reported about his fight, his comrades teased him about his supposed bad shooting (he himself admitted that he needed a lot of ammunition): “The observer must have thrown the map at you” (in reverence to him having to get so close to the other airplane), “The observer probably cried about your lousy shooting and his handkerchief flew away”. But all in good fun.
Once when Manfred von Richthofen didn´t return after a big fight, Schäfer drove around the area trying to find out what had happened. Rumours of bullet wounds and life threatening injuried were making rounds. That's why Schäfer was pleasantly surprised when he found his squadron leader happily in the mess of a pioneer unit in Hénin-Lietard. Slurping oysters.
Tumblr media
In his first full month with Jasta 11 Emil Schäfer increased his victory score to 8, then it was time for the infamous Bloody April. Schäfer contributed to that terrible time for the British by shooting down 15 of them. He enjoyed the spring time: “Numbers 12 and 13 fell today. It's wonderful spring weather here and it's been raining Englishmen for eight days”, he writes to his parents on 6 April 1917.
On 22 April Schäfer got shot down during a fight and he had to emergency land between lines. He had to hid in a shell hole and wait for darkness, then he had to sneak back to the German lines dodging English patrols. He managed to reach an outpost and after a short recovery break he made his way back to his comrades. His adventure impressed his comrades and even Richthofen mentioned it in his biography. He learned a lesson from that experience: “I am glad that I got out of the situation yesterday in one piece, and in future I will strongly consider attacking at low altitudes beyond the line”.
On 26 April he got the notification that the Kaiser awarded him the Hausorden von Hohenzollern (the award that usually preceeded the Pour le Mérite). He also got less happy news, as he was ordered to leave Jasta 11 and become leader of Jasta 28. He was excited about getting to lead his own unit,  but “I am bitterly sorry that I now have to leave my beloved squadron, my excellent comrades and, above all, von Richthofen”.
On the same day, Schäfer had the pleasure to safe Lothar von Richthofens life. Lothar was being attacked by an English plane and lost controll of his machine, Schäfer got behind the enemy and managed to shoot it down in flames.
On 30 April he was awarded the Pour le Mérite.
In May he left for Jasta 28. “I now face a task like no other I´ve had before. I hope and believe that I´ll be well up to it. Staffel 28 is filled with good pilots. In the four days since I am in command, we´ve shot down four, so the prospects are good”.
Tumblr media
On 5 June 1917 Schäfers luck ran out. Used to the extremely close teamwork and mutual protection within Jasta 11 he went into a group of English planes. Max Müller, an experienced pilot himself, described the fight: “Leutnant Schäfer was the leader of our flight against eight Englishmen. I myself was attacking from above – that’s the best way to attack. Leutnant Schäfer was attacking with six other gentlemen from the same hight. He had almost brought down one Englishmen when he was attacked by three more from the rear and from above. I came to his assistance but it was too late. Leutnant Schäfer´s machine broke up and crashed vetically. The other gentlemen did not attack vigorously enough. They are not as yet proficient enough. It could also be that a cable had been severed or shot off. He made the mistake of acting without regard for himself in order to take care of the others. I have told him that many times before”.
Tumblr media
He was buried in his home town of Krefeld on 11 June 1917. Manfred von Richthofen and Werner Voss attended the funeral. The plaque commemorating Schäfer is still above his birthplace.

🗣 Lothar Matthäus: "Joshua Kimmich said that, after Wirtz did not come and Müller and Sané were leaving, he had 'the feeling that something could be done.' Max Eberl is right when he says the player should perform on the pitch. Eberl is doing his job, but others are still allowed to have their say. FC Bayern should be grateful that Kimmich, as a leading player, also thinks outside the box and considers where improvements are needed. That's what sets him apart and makes him so important to the club. Eberl was told he had to generate funds first and cut wages, which has now happened. FC Bayern has raised some money to buy and bring in a player of the highest caliber. They've looked at a few names and have certainly already spoken to them. Negotiations are ongoing. The top players of the German squad in the FIFA World Cup
Germany is one of the great footballing nations, and their greatest players ever aren’t bad, either.  Whether it’s economy tickets in the Bundesliga or mulleted marvels on the global stage, there’s no refuting that Deutschland has done as much to enrich the football nation as anybody.
Tumblr media
But who are the highest German players of all time? We have finished our top. When the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann, Matthias Sammer and Rudi Voller don’t cut, you know you’ve been doing something right.
Franz Beckenbauer The Eternal Kaiser and Football World Cup Legend
Sweepers were previously common in the 60s, but nobody had ever played the role quite like Beckenbauer. Not only did he command play from bottomless with his virtuoso transitory range, he also continually surged onward with the ball, slithering past adversaries to join in bouts. The libero role was born, with Der Kaiser its earliest supporter.

Beckenbauer won four league titles, four German Cups, three European Cups, and two Ballon d’Ors with Bayern and one more late in his career with Hamburg, representing his aptitude to turn any team into victors.  With the nationwide team, the protector and captain was the heavy force behind victories at Euro 72 and the World Cup two years later.
No player has ever been as sophisticated, as calm in ownership, as inspirational, and as dreaded as Beckenbauer. And no German is famous or respected so highly. He was and will surely incessantly remain the utmost player in German history.
Gerd Müller Der Bomber and World Cup Goal Machine
Tumblr media
Muller has scored 365 goals for Bayern in 427 appearances, a rate of 0.85 goals per game. Known for his strength, commanding shot, and hastening, Muller is also Germany’s second-highest scorer with 68 goals, three behind Miroslav Klose, notwithstanding having played 75 fewer games. Muller leftovers both Bayern’s and the Bundesliga’s best goal scorer.

Buy World Cup Tickets now and be part of the world’s most electrifying football event live in the stadiums!
He also has the most hat-tricks for Germany, with eight. He held the record for the most World Cup goals from 1974 and 2006, when Brazil’s Ronaldo broke it.  He was a stats machine, a swindler, a code of a picket during a time when terrains were awful and yellow cards barely existed. He was the all-time goal scorer in German history
Lothar Matthäus FIFA World Cup Legend and German Football’s Timeless General
It seems exactly incredible that Matthaus played in both Euro 1980 and Euro 2000, but orders note that he truly did. Triumphant in that first event and captain for West Germany’s victory at Italia ’90, Matthaus smooth originate time to miss Euro 96 during an injury.
The midfielder, sweeper, and untiring leader claims more trophies than any German man and more World Cup appearances than anyone. Diego Maradona called him his fiercest competitor, and previous Bayern coach Giovanni Trapattoni hierarchical him above Michel Platini and the aforementioned Argentine.
Tumblr media
Philipp Lahm Football World Cup Captain and Germany’s Mastermind on the Field
Short, not chiefly robust, fast or violent, you’d be forgiven for confounding Philipp Lahm for a bookkeeper in its place of one of the utmost players ever. The Bayern firm might have needed physicality, but he made up for it with an astounding football IQ. His move, from right-back to midfield orchestrator under former Bayern boss Pep Guardiola in 2013.
Began a 3-year period in which he was undoubtedly the best in the world in both situations for numerous periods afterward.  He’s one of the most bizarre players I’ve ever qualified in my life, Pep Guardiola once said of the 5 ft 7 utility man. Even talking about the most intelligent players.
He is one of them. Lahm won eight Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals, and a Champions League with the Bavarian giants, but his highest instants came on the global stage. Eight years after his spectacular raid in contradiction of Costa Rica at the 2006 World Cup on home soil, Lahm lifted the cup as head of the Nationalmannschaft. That 2014 team is perhaps the highest in German history. Lahm might have been the pick of the bunch.
Uwe Seeler Germany Iconic Goal Machine and 1966 World Cup Legend
The acknowledged star of German ball in the 1960s, Seeler would surely top another FFT list, should we ever do it, the best players in world football. A huge nugget carving of Seeler’s bare right foot smugly outside Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. It’s just a prize for scoring 490 goals in 580 HSV entrances. The three-time German Footballer of the Year was recognized for his forte, management, aerial aptitude, and, astonishingly for such a big boy, his acrobatic overhead kicks.
Seeler’s uncontrollable goal-counting nature fired HSV to the German title in 1960 and a DFB-Pokal three years later. His 43 goals in 72 global appearances also transported West Germany into the cold, coldness of the 1966 World Cup. A distressed Seeler being aided off the Wembley turf is one of the most iconic photos in football history.
Experience the passion, drama, and glory of the Football World Cup 2026 live! With gettickets365, it’s easier than ever to buy FIFA World Cup Tickets, including premium access to FIFA World Cup Final Tickets and Football World Cup Final Tickets.
