How to shatter the class solidarity of the ruling class
Tumblr media
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me WEDNESDAY (Apr 11) at UCLA, then Chicago (Apr 17), Torino (Apr 21) Marin County (Apr 27), Winnipeg (May 2), Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), and beyond!
Tumblr media
Audre Lorde counsels us that "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House," while MLK said "the law cannot make a man love me, but it can restrain him from lynching me." Somewhere between replacing the system and using the system lies a pragmatic – if easily derailed – course.
Lorde is telling us that a rotten system can't be redeemed by using its own chosen reform mechanisms. King's telling us that unless we live, we can't fight – so anything within the system that makes it easier for your comrades to fight on can hasten the end of the system.
Take the problems of journalism. One old model of journalism funding involved wealthy newspaper families profiting handsomely by selling local appliance store owners the right to reach the townspeople who wanted to read sports-scores. These families expressed their patrician love of their town by peeling off some of those profits to pay reporters to sit through municipal council meetings or even travel overseas and get shot at.
In retrospect, this wasn't ever going to be a stable arrangement. It relied on both the inconstant generosity of newspaper barons and the absence of a superior way to show washing-machine ads to people who might want to buy washing machines. Neither of these were good long-term bets. Not only were newspaper barons easily distracted from their sense of patrician duty (especially when their own power was called into question), but there were lots of better ways to connect buyers and sellers lurking in potentia.
All of this was grossly exacerbated by tech monopolies. Tech barons aren't smarter or more evil than newspaper barons, but they have better tools, and so now they take 51 cents out of every ad dollar and 30 cents out of ever subscriber dollar and they refuse to deliver the news to users who explicitly requested it, unless the news company pays them a bribe to "boost" their posts:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/saving-news-big-tech
The news is important, and people sign up to make, digest, and discuss the news for many non-economic reasons, which means that the news continues to struggle along, despite all the economic impediments and the vulture capitalists and tech monopolists who fight one another for which one will get to take the biggest bite out of the press. We've got outstanding nonprofit news outlets like Propublica, journalist-owned outlets like 404 Media, and crowdfunded reporters like Molly White (and winner-take-all outlets like the New York Times).
But as Hamilton Nolan points out, "that pot of money…is only large enough to produce a small fraction of the journalism that was being produced in past generations":
https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/what-will-replace-advertising-revenue
For Nolan, "public funding of journalism is the only way to fix this…If we accept that journalism is not just a business or a form of entertainment but a public good, then funding it with public money makes perfect sense":
https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/public-funding-of-journalism-is-the
Having grown up in Canada – under the CBC – and then lived for a quarter of my life in the UK – under the BBC – I am very enthusiastic about Nolan's solution. There are obvious problems with publicly funded journalism, like the politicization of news coverage:
https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/jan/24/panel-approving-richard-sharp-as-bbc-chair-included-tory-party-donor
And the transformation of the funding into a cheap political football:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/poilievre-defund-cbc-change-law-1.6810434
But the worst version of those problems is still better than the best version of the private-equity-funded model of news production.
But Nolan notes the emergence of a new form of hedge fund news, one that is awfully promising, and also terribly fraught: Hunterbrook Media, an investigative news outlet owned by short-sellers who pay journalists to research and publish damning reports on companies they hold a short position on:
https://hntrbrk.com/
For those of you who are blissfully distant from the machinations of the financial markets, "short selling" is a wager that a company's stock price will go down. A gambler who takes a short position on a company's stock can make a lot of money if the company stumbles or fails altogether (but if the company does well, the short can suffer literally unlimited losses).
Shorts have historically paid analysts to dig into companies and uncover the sins hidden on their balance-sheets, but as Matt Levine points out, journalists work for a fraction of the price of analysts and are at least as good at uncovering dirt as MBAs are:
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2024-04-02/a-hedge-fund-that-s-also-a-newspaper
What's more, shorts who discover dirt on a company still need to convince journalists to publicize their findings and trigger the sell-off that makes their short position pay off. Shorts who own a muckraking journalistic operation can skip this step: they are the journalists.
There's a way in which this is sheer genius. Well-funded shorts who don't care about the news per se can still be motivated into funding freely available, high-quality investigative journalism about corporate malfeasance (notoriously, one of the least attractive forms of journalism for advertisers). They can pay journalists top dollar – even bid against each other for the most talented journalists – and supply them with all the tools they need to ply their trade. A short won't ever try the kind of bullshit the owners of Vice pulled, paying themselves millions while their journalists lose access to Lexisnexis or the PACER database:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/24/anti-posse/#when-you-absolutely-positively-dont-give-a-solitary-single-fuck
The shorts whose journalists are best equipped stand to make the most money. What's not to like?
Well, the issue here is whether the ruling class's sense of solidarity is stronger than its greed. The wealthy have historically oscillated between real solidarity (think of the ultrawealthy lobbying to support bipartisan votes for tax cuts and bailouts) and "war of all against all" (as when wealthy colonizers dragged their countries into WWI after the supply of countries to steal ran out).
After all, the reason companies engage in the scams that shorts reveal is that they are profitable. "Behind every great fortune is a great crime," and that's just great. You don't win the game when you get into heaven, you win it when you get into the Forbes Rich List.
Take monopolies: investors like the upside of backing an upstart company that gobbles up some staid industry's margins – Amazon vs publishing, say, or Uber vs taxis. But while there's a lot of upside in that move, there's also a lot of risk: most companies that set out to "disrupt" an industry sink, taking their investors' capital down with them.
Contrast that with monopolies: backing a company that merges with its rivals and buys every small company that might someday grow large is a sure thing. Shriven of "wasteful competition," a company can lower quality, raise prices, capture its regulators, screw its workers and suppliers and laugh all the way to Davos. A big enough company can ignore the complaints of those workers, customers and regulators. They're not just too big to fail. They're not just too big to jail. They're too big to care:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/04/teach-me-how-to-shruggie/#kagi
Would-be monopolists are stuck in a high-stakes Prisoner's Dilemma. If they cooperate, they can screw over everyone else and get unimaginably rich. But if one party defects, they can raid the monopolist's margins, short its stock, and snitch to its regulators.
It's true that there's a clear incentive for hedge-fund managers to fund investigative journalism into other hedge-fund managers' portfolio companies. But it would be even more profitable for both of those hedgies to join forces and collude to screw the rest of us over. So long as they mistrust each other, we might see some benefit from that adversarial relationship. But the point of the 0.1% is that there aren't very many of them. The Aspen Institute can rent a hall that will hold an appreciable fraction of that crowd. They buy their private jets and bespoke suits and powdered rhino horn from the same exclusive sellers. Their kids go to the same elite schools. They know each other, and they have every opportunity to get drunk together at a charity ball or a society wedding and cook up a plan to join forces.
This is the problem at the core of "mechanism design" grounded in "rational self-interest." If you try to create a system where people do the right thing because they're selfish assholes, you normalize being a selfish asshole. Eventually, the selfish assholes form a cozy little League of Selfish Assholes and turn on the rest of us.
Appeals to morality don't work on unethical people, but appeals to immorality crowds out ethics. Take the ancient split between "free software" (software that is designed to maximize the freedom of the people who use it) and "open source software" (identical to free software, but promoted as a better way to make robust code through transparency and peer review).
Over the years, open source – an appeal to your own selfish need for better code – triumphed over free software, and its appeal to the ethics of a world of "software freedom." But it turns out that while the difference between "open" and "free" was once mere semantics, it's fully possible to decouple the two. Today, we have lots of "open source": you can see the code that Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook uses, and even contribute your labor to it for free. But you can't actually decide how the software you write works, because it all takes a loop through Google, Microsoft, Apple or Facebook's servers, and only those trillion-dollar tech monopolists have the software freedom to determine how those servers work:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/05/04/which-side-are-you-on/#tivoization-and-beyond
That's ruling class solidarity. The Big Tech firms have hidden a myriad of sins beneath their bafflegab and balance-sheets. These (as yet) undiscovered scams constitute a "bezzle," which JK Galbraith defined as "the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it."
The purpose of Hunterbrook is to discover and destroy bezzles, hastening the moment of realization that the wealth we all feel in a world of seemingly orderly technology is really an illusion. Hunterbrook certainly has its pick of bezzles to choose from, because we are living in a Golden Age of the Bezzle.
Which is why I titled my new novel The Bezzle. It's a tale of high-tech finance scams, starring my two-fisted forensic accountant Marty Hench, and in this volume, Hench is called upon to unwind a predatory prison-tech scam that victimizes the most vulnerable people in America – our army of prisoners – and their families:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865878/thebezzle
The scheme I fictionalize in The Bezzle is very real. Prison-tech monopolists like Securus and Viapath bribe prison officials to abolish calls, in-person visits, mail and parcels, then they supply prisoners with "free" tablets where they pay hugely inflated rates to receive mail, speak to their families, and access ebooks, distance education and other electronic media:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/02/captive-customers/#guillotine-watch
But a group of activists have cornered these high-tech predators, run them to ground and driven them to the brink of extinction, and they've done it using "the master's tools" – with appeals to regulators and the finance sector itself.
Writing for The Appeal, Dana Floberg and Morgan Duckett describe the campaign they waged with Worth Rises to bankrupt the prison-tech sector:
https://theappeal.org/securus-bankruptcy-prison-telecom-industry/
Here's the headline figure: Securus is $1.8 billion in debt, and it has eight months to find a financier or it will go bust. What's more, all the creditors it might reasonably approach have rejected its overtures, and its bonds have been downrated to junk status. It's a dead duck.
Even better is how this happened. Securus's debt problems started with its acquisition, a leveraged buyout by Platinum Equity, who borrowed heavily against the firm and then looted it with bogus "management fees" that meant that the debt continued to grow, despite Securus's $700m in annual revenue from America's prisoners. Platinum was just the last in a long line of PE companies that loaded up Securus with debt and merged it with its competitors, who were also mortgaged to make profits for other private equity funds.
For years, Securus and Platinum were able to service their debt and roll it over when it came due. But after Worth Rises got NYC to pass a law making jail calls free, creditors started to back away from Securus. It's one thing for Securus to charge $18 for a local call from a prison when it's splitting the money with the city jail system. But when that $18 needs to be paid by the city, they're going to demand much lower prices. To make things worse for Securus, prison reformers got similar laws passed in San Francisco and in Connecticut.
Securus tried to outrun its problems by gobbling up one of its major rivals, Icsolutions, but Worth Rises and its coalition convinced regulators at the FCC to block the merger. Securus abandoned the deal:
https://worthrises.org/blogpost/securusmerger
Then, Worth Rises targeted Platinum Equity, going after the pension funds and other investors whose capital Platinum used to keep Securus going. The massive negative press campaign led to eight-figure disinvestments:
https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2019-09-05/la-fi-tom-gores-securus-prison-phone-mass-incarceration
Now, Securus's debt became "distressed," trading at $0.47 on the dollar. A brief, covid-fueled reprieve gave Securus a temporary lifeline, as prisoners' families were barred from in-person visits and had to pay Securus's rates to talk to their incarcerated loved ones. But after lockdown, Securus's troubles picked up right where they left off.
They targeted Platinum's founder, Tom Gores, who papered over his bloody fortune by styling himself as a philanthropist and sports-team owner. After a campaign by Worth Rises and Color of Change, Gores was kicked off the Los Angeles County Museum of Art board. When Gores tried to flip Securus to a SPAC – the same scam Trump pulled with Truth Social – the negative publicity about Securus's unsound morals and financials killed the deal:
https://twitter.com/WorthRises/status/1578034977828384769
Meanwhile, more states and cities are making prisoners' communications free, further worsening Securus's finances:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/14/minnesota-nice/#shitty-technology-adoption-curve
Congress passed the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act, giving the FCC the power to regulate the price of federal prisoners' communications. Securus's debt prices tumbled further:
https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s1541
Securus's debts were coming due: it owes $1.3b in 2024, and hundreds of millions more in 2025. Platinum has promised a $400m cash infusion, but that didn't sway S&P Global, a bond-rating agency that re-rated Securus's bonds as "CCC" (compare with "AAA"). Moody's concurred. Now, Securus is stuck selling junk-bonds:
https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/s1541
The company's creditors have given Securus an eight-month runway to find a new lender before they force it into bankruptcy. The company's debt is trading at $0.08 on the dollar.
Securus's major competitor is Viapath (prison tech is a duopoly). Viapath is also debt-burdened and desperate, thanks to a parallel campaign by Worth Rises, and has tried all of Securus's tricks, and failed:
https://pestakeholder.org/news/american-securities-fails-to-sell-prison-telecom-company-viapath/
Viapath's debts are due next year, and if Securus tanks, no one in their right mind will give Viapath a dime. They're the walking dead.
Worth Rise's brilliant guerrilla warfare against prison-tech and its private equity backers are a master class in using the master's tools to dismantle the master's house. The finance sector isn't a friend of justice or working people, but sometimes it can be used tactically against financialization itself. To paraphrase MLK, "finance can't make a corporation love you, but it can stop a corporation from destroying you."
Yes, the ruling class finds solidarity at the most unexpected moments, and yes, it's easy for appeals to greed to institutionalize greediness. But whether it's funding unbezzling journalism through short selling, or freeing prisons by brandishing their cooked balance-sheets in the faces of bond-rating agencies, there's a lot of good we can do on the way to dismantling the system.

;; Champagne Problems cellythefloshie's snapshot series
Summary: Charlie is hit by the repercussions of her actions. Adam had a solution. Snapshot for: Just Me & You Kinks & Tropes: n/a Word Count: 1.3k+
Heels in hand, Charlie could feel the morning dew as it dripped off the edge of each blade of grass she stepped into. They sprouted between her toes, bringing the slightest of chills during the hot summer night. No, it was morning now. Early morning. The music had long since faded, and guests had left in cars and convoys, while others returned to the cabins, intoxicated zombies craving their bed and dreading the hangover that would come in the morning. Charlie’s head had yet to hit the pillow, but it felt like she was dreaming all the same.
Only in her dreams the company she kept would be Adam. Yet, there he was walking by her side, Banks running off ahead of them through the lawn after a late night of being cooped up in the cabin. He had more energy that she could fathom having, with sleep heavy on her tired eyes while her heart raced and her mind raged with thought.
So much had changed since she had arrived at the cabin. Charlie had arrived with Wesley, living the falsehood of being happy with her life in so many ways. She told herself she was in love. That she loved the life that she had with Wesley in their condo in Calgary. She told herself that her job as a realtor was the one she had been working towards her entire life when, in reality, she was just doing whatever Wesley told her to do. She had done that every moment since she had met him, but she was rid of him now. For good.
That thought alone excited her and left her terrified all at once.
It left her hand lurching out for Adam’s, and she gripped it tight. The mere feeling of him was enough to rid her of all the worries that thinking of Wesley brought, but flooded her with a whole new concern.
What if Adam ghosted her again?
The thought alone left her stomach lurching - or maybe that was multiple glasses of wine she had consumed throughout the night, and continued to drink as Adam handed her a half empty bottle or white wine that they had been nursing since they had stolen it from the drink tent.
Charlie took a long swing of the wine, her head tipping back until her mouth was so full the threat of spitting it out burned at the back of her throat. But maybe if she drank enough, she could calm the anxiety as she tried to convince herself that things would be different this time. That while hockey still consumed his life, and probably always would, he was grown up now.
They both were.
Yet, he was the one who had his life together, while hers seemed to be falling apart.
She was single - or maybe she wasn’t?
She didn’t have a home to go back to.
The only thing Charlie knew was only if what he had said was true, she had Adam - and he wasn’t going to let her forget that.
Adam tugged his arm from her tight hold slowly, and Charlie fell away from him like a ribbon. Her body was loose, her arm falling back to her side and sending ripples through the satin of her dress. She could feel his eyes move over her body, admiring how the dress moved over her hips - but it wasn’t enough to distract him as they came to a standstill in the center of the lawn, standing between the old summer home and the flower bed that was still in need of repair since Banks' hand greeted her mere nights ago.
“You’re quiet,” Adam hummed slowly, his hand reaching out to take the bottle back from her. “What are you thinking about?”
“Everything,” she sighed.
“Hey.” Adam’s neck craned to look down at her as she stepped forward to fill the space between him. He made her feel small - she was small. “You can talk to me. You know that, right? I know when I first got to Winnipeg, I was stupid. I fucked this up, but I think we’re working on moving past that now?”
Charlie nodded slowly, and a single hand raised up to push back her dark hair as it fell into her face.
“Yeah,” she breathed out, the single syllable unsteady, “I just,” her voice broke, “when this weekend is over, and you’re back in Winnipeg, what do I have left?” Charlie looked up at Adam, and his expression was blank - and she was sure his mind was too, as he searched for just the right thing to say. He was drunk, they both were, and he had used up all his sweet words when he had proclaimed his love for her in the middle of the dance floor. Or, it just could have easily been the fact that he knew nothing about her life.
The two of them still had so much more catching up to do.
“A job I hate,” Charlie started to list, “and no place to call home. I don’t even have a car to take me back to the city-”
A sob caught in her throat, hot tears building up in her eyes like acid. If it had been anyone else with her, Charlie would have blamed it on the blinding light of the sun as it came up over the trees. But with Adam, she let them fall. He had seen her cry many times before, and if he was going to be in her life again, it wouldn’t be the last.
The tears branched down her cheeks in hot streams that spilled over the swell of her lips. She licked them away, tasting their salt as her face contorted with frustration. Charlie tried to turn away, to hide the ugliness of her tears, but Adam’s arms were quick to take her. They coiled around her middle tight, his arms reaching up so that his hands gripped at her shoulders. Her brows furrowed for a moment as she wondered where the bottle of wine went, but then she felt it spill over the ground, leaving her feet sticky with its sweet liquor.
“Shit,” she felt the warmth of his words against her neck as she clung to him, his strength hoisting her out of the wine puddle effortlessly and Adam just held her to him and he let her cry.
Adam didn’t let her go until her tears had dried and her sobs had been silenced. Not once did Adam complain, or hush her, like Wesley would have. That fact left a weakness in her chest, one that had her clinging to him. His back, his arms, even as he began to pull away, Charlie grasped at his biceps, desperate to keep him close.
Adam didn't go far. A single hand raised up and found her cheek. The warmth of his touch embraced her as he wiped away her tears. Charlie leaned into his gentle touch. It was there she found her calm, but his next words sent her heart racing;
“Quit your job,” Adam's words were a mere whisper, “and come to Winnipeg with me.”
Jaw slacking, Charlie leaning back to look up at Adam and his soft gaze. Her lips wavered, struggling to find the right words to say, even if all she wanted to do was scream yes. But was that moving so fast? Maybe they could revisit the offer again in the morning when they hadn't drunk numerous bottles of wine. Or she could dive into all that was Ad-
Her eyes went wide as her gaze fell to the sight just beyond Adam. In the flower bed where she had hidden from him nights ago was Banks, his fur already caked with mud. A hand raising to her forehead, the dog's name leaving her lips in a sigh before they both moved to chase Banks through the muddy flower bed.

Do you think it's a good idea for the Devils to trade for Markstrom?
And which player(s) do you think could go to Calgary?
Anons!!! I love anons sob sob!!!
everyone else hates me but anons got me <3
Okay, let's get into this one under the cut eh? :D
So. Do I want Markstrom?
Eh. Not really. I feel like Markstrom is far on the wrong side of thirty. We would have him for two years at that $6m cap hit, and then he'd probably be gone with the rise of Daws, Schmid, and/or Poulter, or another goalie we find or trade for. Markstrom is a very temporary solution to this problem.
That being said, we are in a spot where we can theoretically make a run for third in the Metro and then the postseason. Under this lens, getting Markstrom as soon as possible would be wildly beneficial to this. Additionally, Markstrom could mentor Daws, Schmid, and/or Poulter. So there are benefits to getting him.
I think Fitz sees that the goaltending NEEDS to be addressed and that Vanecek can't reliably be an NHL quality starter. So something should happen, either now, or at the draft, or before the next season. I seriously doubt he goes into the next season with Vitek and Daws.
So is it a good idea? Depends. Depends what happens, depends what we think the team is going to look like next year. (Remember, Mercer and Toffoli need new contracts, as well as others.) I think the Devils should have tried to land Mrazek before he extended with Chicago, honestly. Saros feels too expensive, but he would probably solve the goaltending issue longterm. Markstrom is a shorter term solution that could have a very limited shelf life and a Raanta-esque fall off a cliff.
What would a Markstrom trade look like? Vanecek has to go the other way, for starters, both capwise and just in general. Next, they're gonna want either Holtz or a first. I'd rather give them the first, even if I don't think Markstrom is worth it, especially not without retention. Then probably a later round pick like Fitzy's favorite third and a mid-tier prospect like a Clarke or a Vilen. See if you can get a late round pick too.
So to NJD - Markstrom, CGY 2024 5th (from CHI).
To CGY - Vanecek, Clarke, NJD 2025 1st, NJD 2024 3rd.
I don't want to sell the 2024 1st, given the current state of the team, plus its conditionality already attached to San Jose with the Meier trade. I think a first is a bit of an overpay too, but I don't think Calgary sells for less.

Pain Management Solutions for Arthritis, Back Pain, and Joint Disorders
Living with chronic pain from arthritis, back problems, or joint disorders can significantly affect your daily life. Whether it’s difficulty moving around your home, performing work tasks, or simply enjoying activities you once loved, pain can limit both independence and quality of life. However, there are practical and sustainable ways to manage and reduce discomfort. This blog explores professional pain management solutions offered by Creative Therapy Consultants in Calgary, focusing on evidence-based strategies such as occupational therapy, home modification, ergonomics, and assistive equipment.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Root Causes of Pain Pain from arthritis, back injuries, or joint disorders can result from inflammation, structural damage, poor posture, or repetitive strain. Arthritis affects the joints, causing stiffness and discomfort that worsens over time. Chronic back pain may arise from disc issues, muscle strain, or spinal misalignment. Joint disorders like bursitis or tendinitis often stem from overuse or biomechanical problems.
Proper diagnosis and a tailored rehabilitation plan are essential to not only manage pain but to improve functionality and prevent further damage. A holistic approach involving a qualified team of therapists, including occupational therapists, can make a substantial difference.
How Occupational Therapy Can Help Occupational therapy (OT) is a patient-centered approach that focuses on helping individuals perform daily tasks despite physical limitations. For someone dealing with arthritis or chronic back pain, OT provides customized strategies to manage discomfort while maintaining independence.
An occupational therapist will assess your physical limitations, environment, and routine. Based on the evaluation, a therapist may recommend modified techniques for routine tasks, suggest gentle exercise programs, or introduce tools that reduce strain. These adaptations help minimize pain while maximizing efficiency.
OT is particularly beneficial for those looking to return to work after a period of disability. Therapists focus on re-establishing skills and improving endurance so that transitioning back to professional responsibilities is both safe and sustainable.
Ergonomics and Its Role in Pain Management One of the key components of effective pain management is ergonomics — the science of designing workspaces and tools to fit the user. Poor posture, awkward movement patterns, and unsupportive workstations can aggravate arthritis or back pain.
An occupational therapist will often conduct an ergonomic assessment of your home or work environment. Adjusting desk height, using supportive chairs, modifying hand tools, or implementing standing desks are simple yet powerful ways to reduce physical strain. When ergonomics is properly addressed, pain levels tend to decrease and productivity increases.
Functional Capacity Evaluation for Personalized Plans Before designing a rehabilitation plan or planning a return to work, it’s vital to understand the individual’s current capabilities. A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a standardized assessment that measures physical abilities such as strength, flexibility, endurance, and range of motion.
FCEs help determine what activities are safe for a person to perform. The results can guide occupational therapists in setting realistic goals and identifying necessary accommodations at home or in the workplace. Whether you’re recovering from a joint injury or dealing with long-term arthritis, this evaluation ensures a safer recovery journey.
Home Modification for Daily Ease For individuals with chronic conditions, even simple household tasks can be difficult. Climbing stairs, using the bathroom, or cooking meals can become sources of stress and pain. Home modification is a practical pain management strategy that focuses on redesigning the living space to reduce strain and improve accessibility.
Some common modifications include installing grab bars in the bathroom, replacing door knobs with levers, lowering countertops, or installing stair lifts. Occupational therapists play a vital role in recommending and overseeing these changes to ensure the home environment supports recovery and long-term comfort.
Assistive Equipment to Support Daily Activities Another key aspect of managing chronic pain is the use of assistive equipment. These tools are designed to support daily functioning and reduce the physical effort needed for common tasks.
Examples include ergonomic kitchen tools, long-handled reachers, raised toilet seats, or supportive braces for joints. These devices help alleviate joint stress and support the user’s physical needs, promoting safety and autonomy. OT professionals can recommend the most suitable devices based on a client’s specific condition and lifestyle.
Returning to Work After Injury or Chronic Pain Pain doesn’t have to mark the end of your career. With proper planning and professional support, many individuals successfully return to work after dealing with arthritis, back pain, or joint issues.
Occupational therapy is essential during this transition. Therapists provide graded activity plans, job-specific training, and workplace adaptation strategies. The goal is to ensure that the individual can meet job demands without exacerbating their condition. Collaborating with employers, OTs can create a gradual return-to-work schedule that supports both employee and employer needs.
Lifestyle Tips for Long-Term Pain Management In addition to therapy and equipment, small daily changes can contribute to long-term comfort:
Stay active with low-impact exercises like swimming or walking.
Maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on joints.
Prioritize sleep and stress management to reduce inflammation.
Apply heat or cold therapy as recommended by your therapist.
These lifestyle adjustments, when paired with professional interventions, lead to meaningful improvements in pain levels and quality of life.

The Most Underrated Home Upgrade in Calgary? HomeOne Lights Might Be It
youtube
If you’ve ever stood on a ladder in -10°C weather trying to untangle a strand of Christmas lights, you already know this truth: lighting your home for the holidays (or any occasion, really) is a chore. In Calgary, where the weather can turn icy without much warning, it can even be a little dangerous. And yet, homeowners continue the tradition, year after year—hauling out bins of tangled wires, wrestling with cold fingers and slippery shingles, just to bring a little light to the long, dark winter.
But what if you didn’t have to?
Enter: HomeOne Lights—a permanent outdoor lighting solution that might just be Calgary’s most underrated home upgrade.
A Permanent Solution to a Recurring Problem Let’s start with what makes HomeOne Lights different from traditional lighting: permanence. This isn’t the kind of lighting you install and take down every year. This is the kind of lighting you install once—and that’s it. You’re done.
The system is discreet, professionally installed to blend in with your home’s exterior. During the day, you wouldn’t even notice it unless you were looking for it. But at night, your home becomes a canvas for any kind of light show you can imagine—whether that’s twinkling reds and greens for Christmas, team colors for the Flames’ next game, or a soft, warm glow for a cozy evening on the patio.
In other words, it’s not just about lights—it’s about flexibility.
More Than Just Holiday Lights Most people hear “permanent lighting” and immediately think of Christmas. And while HomeOne Lights certainly shine (pun intended) during the holiday season, they’re so much more than that.
Hosting a birthday party? Light up the house in a burst of color. Celebrating Canada Day? Go red and white. Watching a game? Show your team spirit on your own terms. Need some soft lighting for a backyard dinner or quiet evening in the hot tub? Dial it down with warm tones and subtle movement.
The beauty lies in how you use them. With app-based controls, you can customize the color, pattern, brightness, and even the schedule—down to the minute. It’s like having your own personal lighting designer, right in your phone.
Built for Calgary’s Brutal Winters Let’s not pretend Calgary is the friendliest place for outdoor electronics. We’ve got long winters, biting wind, and snow that overstays its welcome. One of the most impressive things about HomeOne Lights is that they’re engineered specifically to handle the extremes of Alberta’s climate.
These are commercial-grade, weather-resistant LED systems that don’t just survive the winter—they thrive in it. Rain, snow, hail, or high winds? The lights stay intact and functional. And since they’re permanently installed by professionals, there’s no risk of them slipping, sagging, or blowing off in the next snowstorm.
It's peace of mind wrapped in color.
Energy-Efficient and Low Maintenance You might assume that keeping your home lit up all year would run up your utility bill. Not so. HomeOne Lights use energy-efficient LED technology, which means they consume a fraction of the power compared to traditional incandescent strings.
Plus, because they’re built to last and don’t need to be taken down or replaced every season, you’ll save not only time and energy—but also money in the long run. No more buying new lights every few years. No more hiring someone to install and remove them. Just one investment, and you’re set.
Curb Appeal, Elevated We don’t talk about curb appeal enough in Calgary. Maybe it’s because we spend half the year buried under snowbanks, but the way your home looks at night can really set the tone for your neighborhood—and even influence your home’s resale value.
HomeOne Lights add that extra something. That little flicker of magic that says, “This home is well-loved.” Whether you’re going for a subtle, architectural glow or a full-on holiday spectacle, your home becomes a beacon of warmth and personality.
And because the system is totally customizable, you can go big or keep it minimal—it’s all up to you.
One Neighbor’s Story I was chatting with a neighbor who had HomeOne Lights installed last year. “At first, I thought it was a luxury,” she admitted. “Something extra, maybe even a bit over-the-top. But now that I have it? I don’t know how I ever lived without it.”
She told me how her kids love choosing the light colors for different occasions. How guests always compliment the house during parties. How nice it is to just tap the app and have her home beautifully lit, without touching a ladder or crawling through the attic.
“It’s the upgrade you don’t know you need—until you have it.”
The Real Value: Time, Safety, and Simplicity What makes HomeOne Lights so valuable isn't just how they look (although they look fantastic). It’s the time they save. The stress they eliminate. The safety they offer by removing the need to climb ladders in icy conditions. The convenience of never wrestling with tangled wires ever again.
In a world that increasingly values ease, efficiency, and elegance, this is the kind of upgrade that checks every box.
You’re not just installing lights—you’re reclaiming your weekends, your winters, and your sense of calm.
Final Thoughts: Worth It? If you’re the kind of homeowner who likes things to just work—who wants your house to look good, feel inviting, and stay practical—then HomeOne Lights might be exactly what you’ve been missing.
They’re sleek, subtle, and smart. They’re built for Calgary’s climate. They turn your home into a place of celebration, reflection, or just quiet comfort.
So yes—HomeOne Lights might just be the most underrated home upgrade in Calgary.
And once they’re installed, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Unlock Canada's Doors with an Immigration Lawyer in Calgary
Tumblr media
Immigrating to Canada is filled with hope, determination, and countless dreams. But navigating the maze of immigration rules, forms, and procedures can feel overwhelming. Whether you're moving for work, education, family, or a fresh start, the guidance of a trusted Immigration Lawyer in Calgary can make all the difference.
Calgary: A City of Opportunity
In Alberta's vibrant landscape, Calgary is one of Canada's fastest-growing cities. Known for its economic growth, multicultural community, and welcoming spirit, it has become a preferred destination for immigrants. But behind every successful immigration story lies a well-prepared legal path, and that's where the expertise of an Immigration Lawyer in Calgary comes into play.
The Value of Legal Expertise
Immigration law is complex and ever-changing. It's not just about filling out forms. It's about strategy, timing, and understanding how your unique background fits within Canada's legal framework. A qualified Immigration Lawyer helps you understand your options and ensures your application is not just submitted but positioned for success.
They are not just advisors but problem solvers, advocates, and legal guides.
Who Needs an Immigration Lawyer?
Legal assistance is not just for complicated cases. Even straightforward applications can benefit from professional insight. Some of the most common clients who work with an Immigration Lawyer include:
Skilled workers applying through Express Entry
Students planning to study and later settle
Families aiming to reunite through sponsorship
Refugees seeking protection from danger
Business professionals and entrepreneurs
Employers hiring foreign talent
Each category has its legal criteria and nuances, and an experienced lawyer ensures every box is ticked and every risk is minimized.
Services Tailored to Your Immigration Path
Let's explore how a skilled Immigration Lawyer supports various immigration needs:
Express Entry and Skilled Worker Programs
For professionals aiming to settle permanently, Express Entry is a primary gateway. Lawyers help create a strong profile, verify document accuracy, and ensure you're prepared for the Invitation to Apply (ITA) process.
Family Sponsorship
Canada values family reunification. But immigration officers demand proof of genuine relationships. A lawyer helps organize financial documents, relationship history, and all necessary supporting materials to help bring your loved ones home.
Temporary Residence Visas
Proper documentation is key whether you're coming to Calgary for school, work, or a short-term stay. Lawyers ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and help plan the transition to permanent residency if desired.
Business and Investor Immigration
Entrepreneurs and investors have specialized pathways into Canada. Lawyers assist in crafting business plans, compliance with provincial programs, and managing financial requirements under immigration law.
Refugee and Humanitarian Cases
These cases require sensitivity and urgency. A compassionate Immigration Lawyer can guide individuals and families through the asylum claim process, gathering evidence, preparing for hearings, and advocating for safety.
Citizenship Applications
Applying for Canadian citizenship is a proud moment. However, it also comes with language, physical presence, and legal status criteria. Lawyers review your history and walk you through the entire application process.
A Personalized Approach Every Step of the Way
Immigration is not just about status—it's about people, families, and futures. The best lawyers take the time to understand your story. They don't offer one-size-fits-all solutions. They listen, assess, and develop legal strategies that fit your goals and timelines.
An effective Immigration Lawyer stays current on legal changes and policy updates, ensuring your case is handled with precision and foresight.
Legal Representation That Stands By You
Legal representation becomes even more critical if your case involves appeals, delays, or refusals. A seasoned lawyer can file judicial reviews, attend hearings, and defend your rights at immigration tribunals.
You won't have to face legal authorities alone. Your lawyer becomes your voice, your advocate, and your legal protector.
Supporting Calgary's Employers and Institutions
It's not just individuals who benefit from immigration legal services. Many Calgary businesses seek global talent to stay competitive. Immigration lawyers assist employers in:
LMIA applications
Work permit processing
Compliance with federal and provincial laws
International hiring strategies
Their expertise helps businesses avoid costly legal pitfalls and brings skilled workers into roles where they are needed most.
Communication That Builds Trust
Legal matters can be stressful, mainly when your future depends on them. Communication is a core part of a great lawyer's service. A trusted Immigration Lawyer keeps you informed every step of the way—explaining your options, updating your file status, and answering every question with care.
Good lawyers empower clients with knowledge. They make the legal language clear and the process understandable so you can confidently move forward.
What to Look for in an Immigration Lawyer
Not all legal professionals are the same. Here's what to prioritize:
Experience: Look for someone who has successfully handled cases like yours.
Licensing: Ensure they're in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
Clarity: Transparent pricing and clear communication go a long way.
Empathy: Choose a lawyer who sees you as a person, not just a file.
You've found a trustworthy ally when you find someone who combines skill and compassion.
Final Words: Your Journey Begins Here
Every immigration journey is filled with decisions, challenges, and dreams. But with the right help, it doesn't have to be stressful. A skilled Immigration Lawyer gives you the legal strength to move forward with certainty, knowing your future is in capable hands.
Let your new beginning in Canada be marked by preparation, professionalism, and peace of mind. Because when the legal details are in expert hands, you can focus on building your life, career, and home in one of the greatest cities in the world.

"On April 26, in a meeting room at the Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC, Chief Justice Thomas Mathers of the Manitoba Supreme Court opened the inaugural meeting of the Royal Commission on Industrial Relations. Justice Mathers told his audience:
The upheaval taking place throughout the world, and the state of men’s minds during this critical period, make this the time for drastic changes of the industrial and social systems of Canada
Before hearing any evidence at all, Mathers was serving notice that his Commission wanted to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
The Commission was the public face of the Unionist government’s response to the wave of unrest sweeping the country. At the same time as White was secretly asking for naval support, and the military and police forces were dispatching their undercover agents to spy on and harass the Reds, the Borden cabinet wanted to show that it was at least considering the demands for progressive reform coming from many quarters of society. It also wanted to assess how much of the present discontent was based on legitimate grievances and how much on the infamous “outside agitators” that employers loved to blame. As a result, not many days after the Western Labor Conference in Calgary, Ottawa announced the creation of the Mathers Commission, consisting of the Chief Justice and six other commissioners: three business representatives and three from the world of labour, including Tom Moore, president of the national Trades and Labor Congress.
Many activists dismissed the commission as a ploy to camouflage the government’s actual disinterest in reform. After it was all over, John Bruce, one of the labour representatives on the Commission, said it was “one of the bitterest lessons that ever I learned about political chicanery.” But this was probably unfair. Government ministers certainly wanted to defuse the powder keg, but they hoped that the Commission might actually do some good, first of all by identifying the extent of the discontent and second by providing some ideas that would help map out a moderate middle ground between left and right. Or, in the words of Chairman Mathers, the commission wanted to find ways “for establishing permanent improvements in the relations between employers and employees.” Obviously the government hoped that organized labour would buy into the moderate option, but this is not the same thing as calling the Commission a cynical ploy designed to drown significant reform in an ocean of talk.
As they set about their business, commissioners could be in no doubt as to the state of mind of Canadian workers. On the second day of hearings in Victoria, E.S. Woodward, a member of the Victoria Trades and Labor Council, served notice that
no government has ever impressed the workers, as a class, with more distrust than the present Government that is sitting at Ottawa.
This defiant tone of opposition was typical of what commissioners would hear over the subsequent seven weeks of testimony as they made their way by train across the country. "I advocate government ownership of everything,” declared machinist Frederick Eldridge in Sudbury, to loud applause from his audience. “I am a Bolshevist,” labour organizer Clifford Dane announced at the Halifax hearing, “and I will warn these two governments that trouble is coming and the men will have what belongs to them.”
In all, commissioners heard from 486 witnesses in twenty-eight cities from Vancouver Island to Cape Breton. Of course, not every witness was a socialist firebrand. Some were business owners who indulged in the customary Red scaremongering. In Vancouver, for example, N.G. Neill, manager of the British Columbia Employers’ Association, warned that the Bolsheviks in the city were being allowed to “undermine our whole system” and warned the commission that “we have to take some steps to stop this intrigue.” Neill was supported by J.J. Coughlan, a shipyard manager, who blamed socialist labour leaders for all the unrest.
Labour representatives often agreed that a crisis was impending. “Yes, my opinion is that we are on the top of a volcano that is not in any way latent,” warned Thomas Barnard of the New Westminster Trades and Labour Council. But they rejected the notion that a conspiracy of extremists led the unrest. Instead they blamed worker discontent on more prosaic causes: low wages, long working hours, the high cost of living, and lack of security. Vancouver shipwright J.W. Wilkinson put it passionately:
They [the workers] just feel that they are like a piece of merchandise, and that their chances of life are a gamble consisting in the possibility of someone coming along tomorrow to buy them for a day or hire their labour just for a little while, having no personal interest in them whatever more than if they were a piece of wood or a piece of brick.
In Calgary, the commissioners heard from William Irvine, a thirty-four-year-old Unitarian minister whose church had removed him from the pulpit for his anti-war opinions. He told them:
I think what the working men generally want today is truly democratic control of industry. Some people talk of evolution and some of revolution. In Calgary evolution means doing nothing and revolution means doing something.
He reassured the panel that he was not proposing violence but rather “a complete fundamental change in the way we live and do business.”
(Another of the witnesses appearing in Calgary was the RNWMP secret agent Frank Zaneth, using his undercover identity of Harry Blask. Zaneth/Blask attended in his capacity as secretary to union leader George Sangster. The commissioners would have had no idea they were playing host to a police spy.)
Commissioners seemed keen on the idea of industrial councils, known in Great Britain as Whitley Councils after the politician who had conceived of them. These were committees that brought together workers and employers in formal sessions to discuss working conditions and other issues. Some witnesses agreed the idea was worth exploring, but most thought councils were a non-issue. "I do not recognize your authority to interfere with the management of the plant at all, declared a defiant Blythe Rogers, president of BC Sugar Refineries. While at the other end of the spectrum, “Why should labour confer with capital?” asked Socialist Party of Canada member Charles Lester.
It is an insult for it to do so. […] We are not going to compromise with the master class at all; not at all; we are going to fight this thing out to a finish; we are going to use our political power to get hold of the reins of government and introduce what measures we think fit, and we shall not show the master class the slightest consideration whatever.
Lester’s language was extreme, but his rejection of councils was typical of the majority of labour representatives meeting with the Commission. In Regina, Saskatchewan, J. Sanbrook, a bricklayer, opposed the idea of councils because they gave an advisory, not a controlling, role to labour. The Commission was operating on the assumption that cooperation was a good thing, he said. Not so. There was a class war going on and cooperation was simply a way
to make a more patient and contented work animal out of a live human being so that the war fattened profiteers may continue their period of prosperity and profit-making.
The Commission reached Winnipeg on May 10. Most of the city’s prominent labour leaders refused to come to City Hall where commissioners were hearing witnesses. One exception was William Ivens, editor of the Western Labor News and founder of the Labor Church (an organization that business leader A.J. Andrews later called “a camouflage for the preaching of sedition and for fanning the flames of unrest”). Like William Irvine in Calgary, Ivens was a former Methodist preacher who had been fired by his own church because he refused to tone down his anti-war rhetoric. Three months before the Royal Commission arrived in the city, he had warned employers in an editorial in the Labor News:
Your system will fall down about your ears with a suddenness and thoroughness that will surprise you. Such was the process in Russia […] and no man or set of men can stem the tide.
Ivens only attended the Commission’s hearing so that he could explain why his comrades were not there. Simply put, the inquiry had been appointed by a federal government “which we feel is entirely hostile to labour,” he said. As such, labour expected absolutely nothing from its deliberations. One of the great orators of the labour movement, Ivens finished his presentation by mocking the call from management for increased productivity and greater thrift:
Now, if I understand greater thrift, it means that the workers shall wear their overalls just a little bit longer, that they carry just a little bit less in their dinner pails, that their homes which today are not kept warm enough shall be kept one or two degrees colder.
(Meanwhile, as Ivens spoke, a boisterous crowd of veterans and their supporters were meeting around the corner from City Hall in Market Square to call on the provincial government either to deport aliens or resign from office.)
It is indicative of the speed with which events were unfolding in the country that the Winnipeg General Strike began just three days after the commissioners left the city. On the one hand, the strike threatened to make their proceedings redundant. The time for talk was over, thought the more alarmist observers; the revolution had already begun. On the other hand, the troubles in Winnipeg added urgency to the commissioners’ desire to hear for themselves what was disturbing labour peace across the country and to propose some solutions.

Yeah, I think there's some things that escaped containment here that add context to @doberbutts and my conversation in particular. First is that neither of us is a fan of breed bans generally, and I can't actually imagine either Jaz or myself calling for legal breed bans. For one thing, they don't work to promote public safety, and for another thing, we are talking here about how humans conceptualize and interact with our dogs--about the stories we tell ourselves of how we and our dogs came to be. Changing stories is rarely best accomplished via force.
On another point, the Cuban Bloodhound's closest living descendent is the Fila Brasilero, which is a very rare breed in North America. Unlike pit bulls, they are well known for being particularly xenophobic and suspicious of new humans. You can make some arguments about whether banning it and other high-octane LGD/guard dogs like Caucasian Ovcharka is a potentially good idea for public safety reasons, but on balance I think the best legal strategy for handling cases and dogs like that is to implement Calgary-model consequences for dogs that have bite histories and intervene early and often. After all, highly guardy dogs are one of the places where early intervention, sane management and training is crucial for a safe, socially fluent adult dog, and plenty of guardy athletic mastiff breed owners succeed at that just fine.
Also, the breed most implicated as a source of police violence is the GSD and secondarily Malinois, and both breeds are so popular and so commonly used for other functions also that a breed ban would be politically unviable and also, since we are all fully aware that the violence imposed by police dogs is not inherent to the type of dog, stupid and incredibly difficult to implement.
And then for the last thing, Jaz is referring to breed bans in the context of pit bulls because pit bulls are already some of the most-banned and most-popular dogs in North America, where we both live, and because pit bull bans locally are absolutely used as a tool to implement racist policies on housing.... because they are associated with ownership by Black people. Jaz brings up breed bans as a tool of racist and particularly segregationist impulse, not as a potential solution to the problem of racist histories of dogs we love and keep.
(I have some more comments on Jaz' excellent response also but haven't had time to summon my thoughts yet. As usual, we're more or less in agreement--and the point about Louis Dobermann is very well made, regarding intention and... for lack of better words, keeping the story of breed communities who wanted to resist fascism swallowing up their dogs.)
found this really cool article this morning about the history of the use of dogs to oppress BIPOC and particularly the use of the breed referred to variously as slave hounds and Cuban bloodhounds at the time, which was deliberately selected and trained as a weapon of terror. it's a horrifying history, but I think it's worth reading especially for American dog people as we face down a summer of police brutality that will come with the inevitable use of police dogs to perform the same terrorizing function—albeit with more in the way of fine grained, if often theoretical, control over the dog.
I still need to dig out sources to document the relationship between the Cuban Bloodhound and today's Fila Brasilero, because they are strong influences indeed. I am always thinking: what is the ethical underpinning of making the choice to preserve these dogs for the present day? Would it be better or worse to acknowledge their well documented history of colonial violence? We often keep dogs to preserve the parts of our culture and history we want to remember: what role does that play in the case of such a blood soaked, painful history of colonial terror?
Is the rebrand enough to justify keeping the dogs? How about breeds with Cuban bloodhound influence without being the modern form of the strain, such as Rhodesian Ridgebacks? How do the stories we tell about how dogs came to be help us form narratives about our own history?
