Finished up an art trade for Lux (@strangehearted) just in time for their birthday today! Here we have Pim and Charlie from their Digital Love AU taking a joyride on Charlie’s brand new mobility scooter! For those unaware, this AU features Pim and Charlie as a disabled4disabled, T4T couple who start bonding online and helping each other through life’s challenges 🩷💛 It will be posted publicly in time but I guess this can serve as a little introduction!

I curated playlists for each of my dungeons & dragons characters as sort of an exercise to flesh them out a bit more and get to know them better. here’s aphra’s:

sweet disposition by the temper trap this is a song for young aphra. before she was more prone to anger. before she was sort of broken and put back together again. this is the epitome of who aphra was as a child and a teen – carefree and upbeat. she misses that person, but there’s a connection to them that’s stronger than she thinks. they would both like this song.

bloodbuzz ohio by the national this is a song for like, college age aphra. she’s a little more grown up, a little edgier, trying to figure herself out, stepping further away from familial expectations and feeling good in her own skin. there’s still this hint of something buzzing in her blood, though. the inheritor background steps in here, but at this age aphra hasn’t figured out how to separate the complexities of familial exceptions from the parts she does want to honor.

waiting by shiny toy guns this is a song that comes from a very vulnerable place for aphra. it’s not what you think, if you’re thinking I’m a liar. because aphra’s charismatic, people can think she’s fake or manipulative. she brushes comments like those off and tries to pretend they don’t bother her, but they do. aphra’s extremely loyal and very honest, and the idea or even belief from other people that she’s putting on an act is painful for her. she’s constantly trying to convince people she is what you see is what you get. she’s hasn’t gotten to the point where she can let it go if they don’t believe her.

we have it all by pim stones this is a song for traumatized aphra. she was assaulted at a young age, and this song is both an apology to her younger self and from her younger self, each sorry for not protecting the other, for not making different choices, for not being able to fight it, for becoming harder, colder, more closed off – for selling her heart in return for something cold and impersonal. aphra carries this pain and anger with her at all times, and that’s really the scourge part of her aasimar identity. 

youth by daughter this is a song for aphra trying to deal with her trauma. she’s so angry all the time, and that clashes with her charisma and need for closeness in confusing ways. and if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones/because most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs/setting fire to our insides for fun is aphra biting off words, genuinely resentful of those who haven’t suffered assault, of those who can be as carefree and hopeful as she once was, of those who can still feel things like joy and love.

it’s alright by mother mother this is a song that I like to think is a message aphra isn’t really ready to hear yet, but one or more of the friends she’s made tries to tell her as often as they think she needs it. sometimes aphra really does just need to know it’s alright, it’s ok, it’s alright, it’s ok. 

sun is shining by axwell ^ ingrosso this is another song I like to think sort of encapsulates what one or more of aphra’s friends are trying to tell her. maybe someone else sees her, this glowing orange aasimar, and doesn’t just see the anger and pain she does. maybe someone else sees her fierce devotion to her brother and her determination to protect the people she cares about and the strength she feels in fire and sees her as a beautiful, powerful force – not the empty husk she still feels like she is.

shake it out by florence + the machine this is a song for aphra starting to sort of come out of the fog of prolonged trauma. she knows she’s going to carry it with her for the rest of her life, but she’s doing a little better about existing with it, even sitting with it. always dragging that horse around but doing better about setting her jaw and shaking it out because it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back, so shake him off.

dream state by son lux this is a song for aphra as she has that sort of transformative moment. maybe it’s the first moment she really feels free from some of the pain and anguish she experiences constantly. maybe it’s the first moment she really feels connected to her band of adventurers. maybe it’s the first moment she’s able to heal someone with her hands instead of relying solely on fire as defense and protection. she’s moving from the dark day into the bright night, and suddenly there are endless possibilities. she can feel them. she’s moving toward them.

would that I by hozier did I add this song to the list solely for the line Though I’ve handled the wood, I still worship the flame? maybe. mind your business. aphra’s settling into the skin she’s in and accepting what’s happened without forgetting or forgiving it. she’s moving through it.

the great fire by future islands this is called the great fire. aphra’s a pyromaniac. that’s all I have to say about this one. (plus, it’s beautiful.)

when we’re fire by lo-fang wake up, I’ve been trying to make your pain stop is aphra’s sort of awkward way of making friends. she likes the women she’s traveling with. she doesn’t feel too useful in most situations, but she does have those healing hands. she worries when her friends fall unconscious. she’s sort of exasperated but sort of begging them to wake up. she’ll act irritated, but it’s to mask the concern.

these are my friends by lovelytheband she’s starting to really like the people she’s traveling with. she probably wouldn’t say I love them out loud, yet, but they are her friends. and she does love them. she’s really in awe of them.

group therapy by elohim aphra’s idea of therapy is to go out and burn something (or someone). she’s started to see the battles she and her party enter as group therapy. someone in a bad mood? let’s grab our weapons and get some group therapy, motherfuckers.

giving in to the lLove by AURORA aphra’s resisted it for a long time, but she can’t deny the care and intention of the women she’s with. she’s going to give in to their love, to their support, to the found family they’re becoming. she’s always wanted to, anyway.

to build a home by the cinematic orchestra aphra’s always going to mourn the person she might have become if not for her assault. the family she might have been a part of. the home she might have built. but she’s building a home now, with her party, and she feels safe enough to do so.

Ecuador - Galápagos eilanden

Na een hele rustige vlucht, zijn we na zo'n 11 uur vliegen in Quito. We stonden binnen de kortste keren al buiten, want ondanks dat Quito de hoofdstad van Ecuador is, is het vliegveld niet groot en lag de bagage al op de band voordat wij er waren. We nemen een taxi naar de b&b die ik heb geboekt, vlakbij het vliegveld. Vandaag gaan we namelijk nog niet echt naar Quito stad, morgenochtend vertrekken we alweer richting Quito airport voor onze vlucht naar de Galapagos eilanden. In de namiddag komen wij aan bij de b&b, wat eigenlijk gewoon iemands huis is met 3 slaapkamers, waarvan wij er in 1 mogen slapen. We werden gelijk verwelkomd door onze host Patricio en ondanks dat mijn Spaans niet meer helemaal vers in mijn geheugen zit, kan ik hem toch wel prima verstaan. Terugpraten in het Spaans wordt wel wat moeilijker, want hele zinnen kan ik niet meer maken. Met wat hakkie takkie woorden Spaans van mij en de 3 woorden Engels van Patricio, komen we er gelukkig wel uit. Patricio blijkt echt de meest aardige Ecuadoriaan te zijn die we ooit hebben ontmoet. Oké... toegegeven; is hij ook pas de eerste Ecuadoriaan die we ooit hebben ontmoet, maar de standaard ligt nu wel hoog voor alle komende Ecuadorianen!Pim krijgt een zelfgebrouwen biertje van de b&b en ik de lekkerste verse passievruchtsap die ik ooit heb gedronken! 's Avonds eten we een heerlijke zelfgemaakte pizza van Patricio. De pizza is zó groot dat je er makkelijk met z'n 3'en van kan eten.Na een heerlijke nachtrust, verlaten we na het ontbijt de b&b alweer voor onze vlucht naar de Galapagos eilanden, waar we heel erg naar uitkijken!

De vlucht naar Baltra verliep prima. Het eilandje Baltra is eigenlijk gewoon een platte rots met een klein vliegveld er op, meer is er niet. Bij aankomst op Baltra moesten we $5 betalen voor de bus van de luchthaven naar het veerbootje. De rit duurde een paar minuten. Toen moesten we $1 betalen voor het veerbootje naar de overkant, om op Santa Cruz aan te komen. Vervolgens moesten we weer $5 betalen om met de bus van het noordelijkste punt naar het zuidelijkste punt te komen. Op het eiland Santa Cruz is er eigenlijk maar 1 stadje; Puerto Ayora. Na een rit van ongeveer een uur door heel veel soorten landschappen, komen we aan in dit havenplaatsje. We hebben een beetje rondgestruind door het dorpje, wat voor 95% bestaat uit toeristenkantoortjes, souvenirwinkels en restaurantjes. Bij het haventje lagen er op de pier allemaal zeeleeuwen. We lazen dat je super last minute nog wel eens 50-70% korting kon krijgen op een cruise, maar online konden we niet echt iets vinden. We besloten toch maar even 1 van de toeristenkantoortjes binnen te lopen om te vragen naar een last minute cruise. We hadden niet echt een idee naar welke eilanden we precies naar toe zouden willen en voor hoelang, maar het moest in ieder geval niet te duur zijn. Het mannetje kwam met een unieke deal; we konden wel mee met een cruise voor 70% korting op een luxe boot voor 4 nachten... maar dan moesten we wel binnen 1 uur vertrekken. Oei, daar hadden we niet helemaal op gerekend, maar na kort twijfelen besloten we dat we deze kans niet konden laten schieten. Snel hebben we onze backpacks opgehaald uit het hostel en moesten we naar de ATM rennen, want de cruise moest wel cash afgerekend worden. Een ander mannetje reed ons vervolgens met volle snelheid naar de opstapplek, precies datzelfde punt waar we eerder op de dag waren aangekomen in het noordelijke puntje. Aangezien het inmiddels al avond was, werden we in het donker opgehaald door een motorbootje en vaarden we in ongeveer 30 minuten onder een prachtige heldere volle maan naar onze cruiseboot, Monserrat. Het mannetje had niet gelogen; de boot is super luxe, we hebben ook nog eens een cabine op het bovendek met prachtig uitzicht over zee. We zijn met 14 anderen op de boot, veel mensen van onze leeftijd.

Na een heerlijke nacht in een super comfortabel bed, moeten we om 06:45 uur al ontbijten. Na het ontbijt varen we naar South Plazas Island en maken we een prachtige wandeling over dit bijzondere eiland. Er waren gelijk al heel veel zeeleeuwen en leguanen te vinden die absoluut niet verlegen zijn. Na de lunch was het tijd om te gaan snorkelen bij Isla Santa Fé. We snorkelden tussen enorme roggen, zeeschildpadden, zeeleeuwen, white-tip haaien en super kleurrijke vissen. Het leukste vonden wij de zeeleeuwen, want die waren echt op 2 meter afstand onder water met elkaar aan het spelen. Na een prachtige snorkeltocht in het ijskoude water, gaan we weer terug naar de boot waar we even de tijd hebben om op de warmen onder een warme douche. Erg lang de tijd hadden we niet, want de kleine boot lag al weer klaar om ons naar het strand van Santa Fé te brengen. Het héle strand lag vol met zeeleeuwen en ze waren echt niet bang. Naast de ontelbare zeeleeuwen, zien we weer leguanen, maar ook diverse vogelsoorten van heel dichtbij. Het is echt een prachtig ongerept eiland! Eenmaal terug op het strandje, zien we ineens 3 haaien in de branding en plots kwamen er 1 voor 1 allemaal zeeschildpaddenhoofdjes het water uit. Wauw! Als dit nog niet genoeg was, kwam er ook nog even een enorme rog kijken. Op dat moment zagen we samen met de zeeleeuwen in het water, deze 4 super bijzondere dieren in 1 oogopslag. Toen we op het kleine bootje stapten om weer richting onze boot te gaan, werden we omringd door allemaal zeeschildpadden hoofdjes. Iets verderop vaarden we tussen honderden roggen, overal waar je keek zwommen gigantische roggen.

De volgende ochtend gingen we na het ontbijt naar het strand van Isla Española, naar Gardner Bay. We hebben hier een heerlijke strandwandeling gemaakt en kwamen weer een paar zeeleeuwen tegen en ontelbare krabbetjes. Vervolgens zijn Pim en ik op een sup gestapt om langs de hele kust te suppen. Al gauw raakten we bevriend met een zeeleeuw, welke ons de hele suptocht heeft gevolgd en elke keer onder onze sups ging zwemmen en spelen. Ook zagen we onze eerste blue footed boobie van dichtbij, dat is zo'n typische vogel met blauwe poten. Na een klein stukje varen met de boot, gingen we weer snorkelen. Het water was echt ijskoud, maar we zagen echt oneindig veel zeeschildpadden. Daarnaast ook veel soorten vissen en zeesterren. Bijna onderkoeld, gingen we weer terug aan boord. Na een heerlijke kop warme chocolademelk, konden we even lekker opwarmen onder de warme douche. Ineens hoorden we getoeter van de boot; dit betekend dat de kapitein iets heeft gespot in het water. We renden allemaal naar het voordek en werden getrakteerd op een prachtig uitzicht van een moeder walvis met een baby walvis. Vervolgens gingen we aan land bij Suarez Point. Hier waren wederom ontelbare zeeleeuwen en leguanen te vinden. Helaas ook een paar dode zeeleeuwbaby's. Ook zagen we heel veel albatros en albatros nesten met baby's en super veel blue footed boobies op een paar centimeter afstand.

De volgende ochtend stond er een snorkeltripje bij Devil Crown op het programma, direct na het ontbijt. Deze rots ligt bij het eiland Floreana. Het water was nogsteeds ijskoud, maar beter te doen dan gisteren. We gingen een rondje om de rots snorkelen, de stroming was alleen enorm sterk. De eerste helft hoefde je bijna niet te bewegen om vooruit te komen, maar de tweede helft kwam je amper vooruit. Hier zagen we weer superveel zeeschildpadden, een enorme groep roggen, 4 white-tip haaien, zeesterren en veel soorten gekleurde visjes. Eenmaal terug op de boot, uiteraard weer een warme douche en even relaxen. Er werd weer getoeterd en we renden naar buiten. Óveral waar we keken waren echt honderden dolfijnen, aan alle kanten van de boot zag je tot in de verte alleen maar dolfijnen. Wauw, wat bijzonder! Ze kwamen ook heel dichtbij de boot dus we hadden super mooi uitzicht. We kregen een Ecuadoriaanse lunch, cevice. Dit bestond uit rauwe garnalen, tonijn, komkommer, paprika en ui gemarineerd in citroensap met een geheime saus van abuela (oma). Ik had een vegetarische variant met palmharten. Tijdens de lunch werden we gezelschap gehouden door nog meer dolfijnen om ons heen. Na de lunch gingen we naar Cormorant Point, waar we een wandeling hebben gemaakt langs een meer met flamingo's. Aan het einde van de wandeling kwamen we bij een strandje waar in de branding meerdere Galapagoshaaien lagen, natuurlijk weer oneindig veel zeeschildpadden, een paar zeeleeuwen en veel enorm grote stingrays. Vanaf het strandje konden we dit erg mooi bekijken. Pim en ik gingen vervolgens vanaf een ander punt bij dat eiland met een kayak de baai in waar we omringd werden door ontelbare zeeschildpaddenhoofdjes. We waren even helemaal samen met zoveel zeeschildpadden. Dat was wel heel erg bijzonder. Daarna hebben we nog even gesnorkeld vanaf het strand tussen alleen maar zeeschildpadden. Ik denk dat we er deze trip wel genoeg hebben gezien, maar ze blijven super bijzonder! Op het strandje was ook een 'postoffice'. Een soort van groot vogelhuisje met een deurtje waar echt heel veel zakken met ansichtkaarten lagen die door toeristen worden meegenomen en ook door toeristen op bestemming worden afgeleverd. Dus als je dan een kaart ziet die in je eigen woonplaats of omgeving bezorgd moet worden, mag je die meenemen en zelf bezorgen.

De ochtend erna kwamen we aan bij North Seymour Island. De wandeling begon al om 06:00 uur, dus we waren al vroeg uit de veren. Op dit eiland zagen we voornamelijk heel veel soorten vogels zoals fregat vogels en nog een paar zeeleeuwen. Hiermee is gelijk een einde gekomen aan onze Galapagos cruise, waar we absoluut geen spijt van hebben dat we dit gedaan hebben, ookal was het wel een beetje boven budget. We vinden het ook wel weer lekker dat we nu op eigen houtje verder de Galapagos kunnen ontdekken.We reizen weer naar het eiland Santa Cruz, naar Puerto Ayora, waar we de eerste dag ook aankwamen. Onderweg zijn we nog gestopt bij een gebied waar enorm veel en enorm grote landschildpadden leven, met een gemiddelde leeftijd van 100-150 jaar. We hebben hier veel geleerd over deze indrukwekkende dieren en vervolgens zijn we door 3 lavatunnels gelopen, wat ook erg bijzonder was!Eenmaal terug in Puerto Ayora zijn we naar het Darwin Research Centre gegaan. Dit gebied wordt echt gebruikt als onderzoeksgebied van diverse planten en dieren op de Galapagos, daarnaast hebben ze ook een broedcentrum voor landschildpadden, om deze populatie in de toekomst weer terug te brengen naar hoe het ooit was en te voorkomen dat ze uitsterven. Pim vond het Darwin Research Centre super interessant, ik heb zelf weinig meegekregen van de uitleg. Mijn hoofd was nogal overprikkeld door alle indrukken van de afgelopen dagen. Puerto Ayora is wel echt een heel gezellig plaatsje. We krijgen hier wel een vakantiegevoel. De meeste foto's staan nog op de camera en GoPro, maar die moeten we nog even uitzoeken en op de telefoon zetten. De beste foto's zien jullie wel als we weer thuis zijn!

Om 06:00 uur stonden we al klaar bij de haven, want we pakken de boot naar het eiland Isabela. Dat leverde nogal wat stress op, want het mannetje die de boottickets voor ons zou boeken, die had de boottickets niet geboekt. Hij was er gelukkig wel zelf en uiteindelijk konden we alsnog mee op de boot omdat er 2 mensen niet kwamen opdagen. We moesten ons alleen wel voordoen als Daniel en Virginia. Op dat moment dachten we dat de stress wel gedaan was, maar toen wisten we nog niet dat we daarna 2,5 uur over een super ruige zee moesten varen. Het was wel echt een hele heftige boottocht en als we dit vooraf hadden geweten, waren we waarschijnlijk niet naar Isabela gegaan. Het eiland is echt super groot, maar het enige dorpje is heel erg klein en nog helemaal niet zo bebouwd. De meeste wegen zijn ook nog gewoon zandwegen en de restaurantjes en huisjes zijn nog wat authentieker. Het strand is erg breed en mooi, maar helaas is het niet zo heel warm op de Galapagoseilanden sinds we er zijn, dus we kunnen niet lekker op het strand liggen. We hebben een mountainbike (nee geen elektrische dit keer!) gehuurd voor $10 en zijn het Galapagos National Park ingefietst, een hele lange zandweg met allemaal plekjes onderweg waar je kan stoppen voor verre uitzichten, flamingo's spotten, strandjes etc. Ineens zag Pim tijdens het fietsen een gigantische landschildpad in de bosjes naast het zandpad, hij was lekker aan het eten. Echt een prachtige fietsroute zo over het eiland van Isabela! Vanaf het uitzichtpunt zagen we pas hoe groot het eigenlijk is, aan de ene kant kon je heel ver over zee uitkijken en de andere kant zag je alleen maar land. Na de fietstocht van zo'n 3 uurtjes, hebben we onszelf getrakteerd op een veel te duur drankje en bordje patat bij de Pink Iguana Bar. Deze strandtent is wel echt heel sfeervol en je kan lekker met je voetjes in het zand zitten. De volgende ochtend hebben we een combi kayak & snorkeltripje gemaakt bij Las Tintoreras, hier zagen we weer heel veel zeeschildpadden en vogels, maar deze keer ook zwemmende leguanen. Ons doel was eigenlijk om pinguins te spotten, maar helaas hebben we die niet gevonden. Het is nu geen pinguinseizoen. Na het snorkelen zijn we weer terug gegaan naar de haven, want vandaag pakken we alweer de boot terug naar Santa Cruz. Achteraf was een extra dagje op Isabela wel lekker geweest, maar onze terugvlucht naar Quito staat al vast en daarvoor moeten we eerst terug naar Santa Cruz. Na opnieuw een hele wilde boottocht van ruim 3 uur, staan we eindelijk weer op land. Blijkbaar is de zee in deze tijd van het jaar het ruigst, dus daar hebben we geen geluk mee gehad. 's Avonds heeft Pim een hele kreeft naar binnen gewerkt. Opzich kan je best met laag budget reizen op de Galapagos als je wil. Wij slapen meestal voor zo'n $25 - $35 per nacht in een basic hotel, in een 2-persoonskamer met eigen badkamer. Het kan eventueel nog wel goedkoper, maar wij hadden niet zoveel zin om te onderhandelen. Qua eten kan je voor zo'n $5 een maaltijd krijgen, maar dan krijg je wel een bord met rijst, bonen, aardappel en iets van de bbq naar keuze (bijv. kip, chorizo, vis) of je kan voor $20 een hele kreeft krijgen. Wij hebben niet elke keer de goedkoopste opties opgezocht, dus we hadden ook soms een belegd broodje voor $10, maar daar tegenover kan je ook een empanada kopen voor $1,50. Het is maar net waar je naar op zoek bent. De excursies zijn wel aan de dure kant, maar je kan ook gewoon een snorkel en een fiets huren en zelf opzoek gaan naar mooie plekjes.
