Alice Coltrane taught me the meditative, quiet, and spiritual side of jazz. Alice Coltrane was not the first, but she took it to another level. Alice Coltrane opened the doors for people to understand that all black spirituality in music is not a single thing it isnt contextualized through the church even though she references it. Her music is at the heart of a lot of black artists creating meditative music or black artists tapping into eastern styles and saying black music is more than it is permitted to be by the commercial music industry. This particular recording is important because we hear how much of a force she was live and her sidemen reflect how her influence shaped what we know as spiritual jazz, ambient music by black artists or experimental post-dub stuff it all has her fingerprints.

Psychedelic Daze ☮︎ Spirit of 1967 vs Reality 2024
A 21st Century Neo-Psychedelic Music Mix
I coulda said it was in my way – D. Crosby
Wub-Fur Internet Radio is back with another of our patent pending streaming mixes of contemporary psych rock from around the world and across the universe. Fourteen tunes that traffic in more than a bit of musical and lyrical nostalgia without completely losing touch with the reality of the present day. Featuring contributions from Helicon, Rancho Relaxo, Robyn Hitchcock, Tess Parks, Jeffrey Alexander + The Heavy Lidders, Bananagun, Deviant Amps, Sons of Zokü, and a half dozen more bands of partially unreconstructed hippies that are up to the task of dragging the spirit of the 1960s kicking and screaming into the third decade of the 21st century.
Cover art based on a photo by Leslie Bryce of David Crosby visiting The Beatles in the studio during the Sgt. Pepper recording sessions in 1967. Apologies to them all and to legendary Swedish psych rockers Gold, whose tune Psychedelic Days kicks off our mix, inspired its title, and serves as something of a mission statement for its unapologetically nostalgic freak-flag-flying spirit.
▶︎ Listen on Mixcloud

my latest mix was blocked by a youtube copyright bot, which motivated me to finally upload all of my mixes to mixcloud, so that's where the new one lives for now until i win or lose my youtube appeal: https://www.mixcloud.com/ivy-nelson4/get-unconscious-counterspell-no-6/
i had a concept for this one, and i ended up making a little short story out of it
you woke up at 3 in the morning and doomscrolled on your phone for an hour and now you're trying to fall back asleep. but it's too late. you're awake. and you're thinking every thought you've ever had. you cannot stop. you're addicted to the shindig. eventually your thoughts gather into a dense mass of worry that feels too big to carry. you think, oh, what could i possibly do in whatever's left of the world. you find yourself walking down the stairs in a club you haven't been to in ten years and the music is pulsing through the wall in time with your anger. your foot trips over one of the steps and you fall and as you hit the cement it rips open and you fall through it, back into your eyelids, awake again. oh, ok, at least that was like, ten minutes of sleep. no sooner do you realize you're awake than a wasteland of anxious thoughts spreads out before you once more, blanketing everything you know and take for granted. you can see a few bunkers in the distance and you know they're abandoned. no one lives here because it's long ceased to be a place where anyone could live. but you feel something wet seep through your shoes — mud, so there must be water somewhere, and then you see the water, it ripples through the earth until you're immersed in it, swimming down, down, down, as far as you can go, into a dream that you hope has nothing to do with who you are or how you feel
darkside: american references anthony naples: somebody sasha feat. poliça: out of time d. tiffany & dj zozi: waiting in the dark model/actriz: vespers brutalismus 3000: alleswirdgut (underworld mix) brutalismus 3000: nightclubbing (brutalismus 3000 version) prince: the future (mark moore & william orbit remix) the radio dept.: occupied underworld: dirty epic ellen allien & apparat: turbo dreams juju & jordash: loosey goosey takemoto akira: island in video casset madonna: bedtime story (orbital mix)
recorded the day after seeing underworld at kings theatre and thus on very little sleep, what's done is done blearily

Good morning!  I hope you slept well and feel rested?  Currently sitting in my study, fully dressed and ready to go!  Welcome to 2024!
Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day.
It’s currently 2.30 a.m.  The cab will be here at 3.30.  By the time most of you are reading this, I will be at Heathrow Airport, killing time.  Flight leaves at 8.00 a.m.  Ten-hour flight.  Arrives Montego Bay 1.00 p.m.
I’m going to spend a few days with a mate.  The rest of them are going to the family house.  I will join them in time for the wake.
Many thanks to everyone that listened to the radio show.  If you missed it, it’s up on Mixcloud.  It gave me a lot of pleasure to feature three acts that don’t get enough recognition: Sly & The Family Stone, Sylvester and The Salsoul Orchestra.
My father in law’s funeral is on Saturday, January 6th, which is why I won’t be able to do my radio show.  I’ll be back live in the studio on Saturday, January 13th.
I wouldn’t describe this trip as a ‘holiday’.  The Trouble is there to bury her dad and give him a good send-off.  She’ll be fragile for a while.
Definitely looking forward to some sunshine.  It’s 26 degrees in JA today, rising to 31 on Saturday.  I plan to be outdoors as much as possible and get some colour on this sad, pasty skin.
I’m taking my laptop, so I should be able to do some kind of status every day.  I’m looking forward to spending time with my JA family, who will ensure that Daddy’s funeral is a memorable day.
I hope your New Year’s Eve went well, whatever you did.  Some people like raving, while some are happy to drink (and fall asleep) in front of the TV.  I had fun at The White Lion, as you can see from my pictures.
2024 will be whatever you want it to be.  Yes, there will be challenges and disappointments (just like 2023) but that’s life.  Like Frankie Beverley said, life is a subtle balance of joy and pain, sunshine and rain.  Outside of the inevitable ups and downs, 2024 is down to you.  If you work hard and work smart, 2024 will be a brilliant year for you.
Have a marvellous and momentous Monday.  I love you all.

If you're reading this, it means that you made it out of 2024.  Happy New Year and welcome to Camp Lo-Fi.  I hope and pray that you will be able to experience peaceful moments and great music throughout this year.  I pulled this episode together as 2024 was coming to a close, making this the first sonic statement for Radio BSOTS in 2025.  To kick off a new year of the podcast, this episode and the next episode will focus on my participation in the Netlabel Day Radio live stream marathon that took place in July of last year.  I initially recorded a 30-minute test run for the stream and figured that I should share that with the listeners.
I gathered together some Creative Commons tunes from indie labels that ended up releasing later works under full copyright as time went on, but are still imprints that I hold in high regard (namely Tokyo Dawn, Budabeats, and Error Broadcast).  All cuts played during the test run can still be found online via Jamendo, Bandcamp, and the Free Music Archive.  This set of music leans heavy on the sounds of international beat culture, particularly that first decade of the early 2000s where the lines between electronic music and hip-hop production got blurry (and for the better, in my opinion).  Selections from Comfort Fit, Suhov, Bluntspeakers, and Apes On Tapes are probably the best examples of this.
Outside of the test run, the show opens with a selection in honor of ccMixter turning 20 years old (featuring the voice of Madam Snowflake - check out this video for a snapshot of her artistic journey) and closes with an addictive head-nodding joint from Fields Ohio.  I also get to share some listener feedback this time around.  As a bonus, I couldn't let the episode end without the words and voice of the late, great Nikki Giovanni.  As always, I welcome your interaction and hope that there are some selections within this installment of the podcast that grab your attention and increase your curiosity about other gems that can be found within the world of Creative Commons licensed music.
Theme music by Cy Tru (edited by Macedonia).  Background music by Techniken Defunkus.  ID drops from Morganics and Jonny Sonic.

What is a DJ?
A DJ (Disc Jockey) is an individual who plays recorded music for an audience. DJs select and mix tracks to create a seamless flow of music, often tailoring their sets to suit the mood of the venue and the preferences of the audience. DJs can perform in various settings, including nightclubs, festivals, radio stations, and private events.
Standard Definition of a DJ
A DJ typically:
Selects Music: Chooses tracks from various genres to play.
Mixes Music: Blends tracks together to create a continuous flow of music.
Reads the Crowd: Adjusts the music selection based on audience response.
Uses Equipment: Operates turntables, mixers, CDJs, or DJ software to play and manipulate music.
Becoming a Successful DJ
1. Ethics of Hard Work, Study, and Perseverance
Passion and Dedication: Have a genuine love for music and a strong desire to share it with others.
Consistent Practice: Spend regular time practicing your mixing skills, experimenting with new techniques, and staying updated with the latest music.
Continuous Learning: Study music theory, DJ techniques, and the latest trends in the music industry. Attend workshops, take online courses, and learn from experienced DJs.
Networking: Build connections with other DJs, producers, event organizers, and music enthusiasts. Networking can open opportunities for gigs and collaborations.
Professionalism: Be reliable, punctual, and professional in all your dealings. Treat every gig, no matter how small, with the same level of importance and commitment.
2. Technical Skills and Knowledge
Learn the Basics: Understand the fundamental techniques of DJing, such as beatmatching, phrasing, and EQing.
Master Your Equipment: Whether you use turntables, CDJs, or DJ software, become proficient in your chosen equipment. Learn the ins and outs of your gear to maximize its potential.
Music Library: Build a diverse and well-organized music library. Know your tracks well, so you can quickly find and play the right song at the right time.
Mixing Techniques: Develop skills in different mixing techniques such as blending, cutting, scratching, and using effects.
3. Mixing Different Genres
Understand Genre Characteristics: Learn the defining features of different genres, including tempo, rhythm, structure, and energy levels.
Create Smooth Transitions: When mixing genres, aim for smooth transitions. Use techniques like key matching, beatmatching, and EQ adjustments to blend tracks seamlessly.
Experiment with Mashups: Create mashups by layering vocals from one genre over the instrumental of another. This can create unique and exciting blends.
Use Effects and Loops: Incorporate effects, loops, and samples to enhance your mixes and make transitions more interesting.
Read the Crowd: Pay attention to the audience’s reactions and be ready to switch genres to maintain energy and engagement.
4. Building Your Brand
Develop a Unique Style: Find your unique sound and style. This will help you stand out and attract a dedicated audience.
Create a Brand Identity: Design a logo, choose a stage name, and develop a consistent visual identity for your social media and promotional materials.
Promote Yourself: Use social media platforms, create mixes and upload them to sites like SoundCloud and Mixcloud, and engage with your audience online.
Perform Live: Gain experience by performing at local clubs, bars, and events. Live performances help you build a following and improve your skills in front of an audience.
Resources and Tools
DJ Courses: Websites like DJ TechTools, Point Blank Music School, and Digital DJ Tips offer comprehensive courses for aspiring DJs.
Books: "How to DJ Right: The Art and Science of Playing Records" by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster, and "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton.
Software: Popular DJ software includes Serato DJ, Traktor Pro, and Rekordbox.
Hardware: Familiarize yourself with different DJ controllers, mixers, and turntables. Brands like Pioneer DJ, Numark, and Denon DJ are well-regarded.
By combining technical skills, continuous learning, networking, and a strong work ethic, you can become a successful DJ capable of mixing different genres and captivating diverse audiences.
