Beyond the Surface: The Real Impact of the Ceramic Coating Sleeve
Thereâs a quiet hero in many industrial settings that doesnât get the spotlight it deserves. It doesnât spin, it doesnât flash, and it doesnât make a sound. Yet, without it, millions of dollars in machinery would wear out faster, production would stall, and safety could be compromised.
That unassuming component? The Ceramic Coating Sleeve.
Often overlooked in broader conversations about maintenance or engineering upgrades, this humble sleeve plays a critical role in extending the lifespan of high-performance components across power plants, chemical refineries, and even aerospace systems. But what exactly makes it so vital?
This blog takes a different approach. Rather than rattling off specs, weâll look deeper: how this component works, why it matters, and what it reveals about our evolving priorities in industrial reliability.
From Wear to Wow: The Birth of a Solution
In high-friction or high-corrosion environments, even the toughest metals can deteriorate rapidly. Engineers once tried battling this problem with thicker alloys or complex lubrication systems. But these methods came with trade-offs â weight, cost, and operational downtime.
Enter the Ceramic Coating Sleeve.
By applying a ceramic coating â often through plasma spraying, chemical vapor deposition, or sol-gel techniques â manufacturers found they could create a protective barrier thatâs:
Incredibly hard (often exceeding 9 on the Mohs scale),
Resistant to heat (some withstand temps over 1000°C),
Chemically inert, meaning it doesnât degrade in harsh acids or alkalis.
And here's the kicker â it does all of this without significantly adding to the componentâs mass or altering its base structure.
The Human Side of Engineering: Why It Matters in the Field
Letâs step away from the lab for a moment. Picture a technician working on-site at a petrochemical plant in the sweltering summer heat. The production line is down â again â because a rotating shaft has worn out faster than expected. Theyâre under pressure. Every hour of downtime costs thousands.
They install a new Ceramic Coating Sleeve â one thatâs been designed not just for the shaft, but also optimized for the specific wear profile of the machinery. This time, theyâre not coming back in two months. Theyâre coming back in two years.
In moments like this, the sleeve isnât just a product. Itâs peace of mind. Itâs fewer emergencies, less stress, and higher trust in the system.
Thatâs what engineering should always strive for: blending material science with meaningful human impact.
A Deep Dive into the Tech: How Does It Work?
Hereâs the part that nerds (like us) love.
A Ceramic Coating Sleeve starts with a substrate â typically a metallic or alloy sleeve that fits over a shaft or within a bearing system. It is then coated with ceramics such as:
Aluminum oxide (AlâOâ) for general wear resistance,
Zirconia (ZrOâ) for thermal shock applications,
Silicon carbide (SiC) or titanium nitride (TiN) for extreme hardness and chemical stability.
These coatings are applied in layers microns thick, but donât let their size fool you. Even thin coatings can dramatically shift a componentâs behavior â reducing friction coefficients, increasing resistance to pitting, and slowing oxidation to a crawl.
Different from the Rest: Why Not Just Go Full Ceramic?
A common question arises: if ceramics are so great, why not make the entire sleeve out of ceramic?
Itâs all about balance.
Full ceramic parts are brittle. They donât like impact or vibration â two things that are unfortunately common in industrial settings. By combining the flexibility of metal with the resilience of ceramic on the surface, Ceramic Coating Sleeves offer the best of both worlds.
This hybrid approach mirrors what we often see in nature â bones that are hard on the outside but spongy inside, or tree trunks that are dense yet flexible. Itâs a reminder that sometimes, compromise is the smartest form of innovation.
Applications Across Industries: Not Just for the Big Players
You might think these sleeves are reserved for billion-dollar facilities. But thatâs changing fast.
Today, Ceramic Coating Sleeves are showing up in:
Pulp and paper plants, where they protect rollers from slurry and heat,
Automotive manufacturing, especially in EVs where wear resistance is critical,
Pharmaceutical production, where chemical exposure can quickly degrade stainless steel,
Even in food processing lines, where hygiene and abrasion resistance must coexist.
The beauty of this technology is that it scales. A small workshop with a single CNC lathe can benefit from the same principles as a nuclear plant turbine.
Challenges and Considerations: It's Not All Smooth
No solution is without its quirks.
Some challenges include:
Adhesion issues if the substrate isn't prepared correctly,
Cracking or delamination if thermal cycling isnât considered in design,
Initial cost, which can be higher than untreated sleeves (though cheaper in the long run).
Also, quality control in coating thickness and uniformity is crucial. A poorly applied ceramic layer can do more harm than good. Thatâs why sourcing from experienced manufacturers and working closely with material scientists canât be overstated.
Looking Ahead: Smart Coatings and Future Materials
The future of the Ceramic Coating Sleeve isnât static. Researchers are developing:
Self-healing ceramic coatings that can repair micro-cracks over time,
Smart sleeves with embedded sensors that monitor wear and temperature in real-time,
Eco-friendly ceramic composites using less energy-intensive processing methods.
In other words, the sleeve you install today might soon become a data node in your plantâs predictive maintenance system. Thatâs an exciting leap from what was once a passive wear component.
Wrapping Up: The Invisible Asset with Massive Impact
In the world of engineering, the loudest innovations often steal the show â think AI, robotics, or giant offshore wind turbines. But thereâs a quiet revolution happening beneath the surface, where humble components like the Ceramic Coating Sleeve are redefining what it means to be durable, efficient, and sustainable.
They donât ask for attention. But they earn respect â quietly, steadily, and reliably.
And maybe thatâs what real innovation looks like.

Arrow what cool things are you working on at work right now? Tell it like you're explaining it to a three year old. I haven't taken a science class since 2004...
Hmm, cool things...it's all pretty routine right now, lol, so I'll just pick something to blabber about!
So I've mentioned before that the bulk of my work is analyzing samples for common pollutants like pesticides. And as regulations change, we have to, too!
Right now we're working on lowering our "limit of detection" for a common pesticide. That's exactly what it sounds like: we need to be able to see it at really low concentrations, lower than anyone used to care about.
One of the reasons that's hard is that it's difficult to isolate just one thing to detect, so we end up with a "background" signal that can be so high it's like the thing we want to see isn't even there. We can try to fix that in different ways.
We can try to clean our samples: remove as much other stuff as possible so nothing interferes with the signal from what we care about. That's on the wet lab side, and can involve changes in how we extract the chemical (soaking it in different solutions to dissolve what we want and leave the rest), adding other chemicals that will react with what we don't want and leave what we do, things like that.
But even if that's perfect, we can be limited by what our scientific equipment can do. So on my side, that's what we have to work around.
Usually, we push the sample through a column that's lined with a known material. Different chemicals will interact with that material differently, so they will take different amounts of time to come out on the other side. Then, they go through the mass spec.
Inside that, we separate them again. We set the first part of the mass spec so that only compounds with a specific mass can go through. Then, whatever makes it through at a given time is blasted with electricity, which breaks it into smaller pieces. We look for the change from one mass to another, that's hopefully specific to our material, to rule out even more stray signals.
Selective extraction followed by three separation steps--that sounds complex enough that what we get out must be pretty much what we want, right?
Wrongđ
Even with all of that, there can still be enough things with exactly the same response that the signal of something only present at less than 1 part per billion parts is still obscured.
So we have a new instrument does even more! It's called ion mobility, and while it's been around a while, in industries beholden to regulatory agencies that don't embrace change quickly it's just starting to be more common.
With this, we can add even more separation variables. Maybe two compounds made it through the column at the same time, and even have the same mass, but are shaped differently enough that when put in an electric field and bombarded with a gas, one will slow down more than the other! Then, we can limit even more what goes through the remaining steps.
There are a lot if variables here to optimize, obviously. It can take a while to get it just right, and then you have to prove to other people that it works. But when you aren't in a major time crunch (which we are of course lol) it can be a fun puzzle to solve!
#i am...so sorry#i just kept going#and explained nothing lol#shorter answer on a different topic:#I'm also helping verify a different lab's method so they can get EPA approval of results they've already generated#should have just said that#đ#personal

Written for @teamengineeringâs The Fitz Wish List to celebrate Leo Fitzâs 30th birthday! Also fulfills @thefitzsimmonsnetworkâs Fanwork Friday Prompt âSurpriseâ.
~2600 words (Title from Fall Out Boyâs âImmortalsâ) Set post-canon.
Wish #3: A Visit to Their Original Chem Lab ~ Read Below or on AO3!
When Jemma got the news, she knew exactly where she needed to tell Fitz her little secret. What better place to tell Fitz about the next chapter of their lives than the place where it- where they- truly began.
Jemma wasnât even sure the exact condition of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Science and Technology in light of the events of the past several years. But, after a few phone calls, and not to mention her pull as a very prominent past-student, Jemma was given permission to bring Fitz to the Academy in the late dusk of a cool August evening. The halls were deserted, with not a single student or professor in sight, but everything seemed to be exactly as Jemma remembered it.
As she led Fitz down the quiet Academy hallway, she could tell that even though he was blindfolded to keep their destination a secret, he knew exactly where they were. As soon as they had entered the Academy, Fitzâs grip on her hand had tightened, his fingers wrapping more securely around her own and the cool metal of his wedding band pressing into her palm. Even without seeing it in front of him, the building was so familiar to the both of them that he knew exactly where he was based on smell and sound alone.
The entire way to the Academy, Fitz had whined about how it wasnât fair to keep where they were going such a secret. He had even used the Jemma, youâre my best friend-not to mention my wife- donât we tell each other everything card. But, Jemma was determined to keep it a surprise for him. She had merely smirked, rolled her eyes, and told him to sit back, keep his mouth shut, and my goodness, if you would just learn to be patient for once in your life, Fitz, we will be there soon.
When she handed him the blindfold, he had looked at her questioningly, but eventually acquiesced and permitted her to tie it around his eyes. But once they arrived, and he realized where she was taking him, he had finally shut his mouth and allowed her to lead him through the familiar halls.
Once Jemma reached her destination, she slowed her steps and turned to Fitz. Reaching forward, she tugged off his blindfold.
âSurpriseâ she whispered, as he blinked a few times while his eyes adjusted to the light.
Once he registered just exactly where they were standing, a smile widened on his face.
âYou brought us to our old Chem lab?â he asked, smiling at her as she could see the memories flooding back into his eyes.
âMm-hmm.â Jemma grinned back. âI thought it would be special to see where our story began.â
âJemma, this is so great,â Fitz responded with a smile. âIâve been hoping we could come back here someday. See the olâ place once more. Thank you.â He leaned forward, about to kiss her, before he suddenly straightened back up and quirked an eyebrow. âAre we allowed to be in here? Are you sure this is okay?â
âYes, Fitz, Iâm positive,â Jemma answered, an eyeroll accompanying her giggle. âI got all the necessary permission. Do you think that I- Jemma Simmons- would break a rule? And at the Academy of all places?â Jemma said, a smile forming on her lips, and her hand coming up to her chest in a gesture of mock offense.
âOkay, youâre right. I know you would never break a rule.â Fitz responded sarcastically. But, then his face became serious, his eyes staring deeply into hers. âThank you, Jemma.â
âYouâre quite welcome.â Jemma leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on Fitzâs lips. âShall we go in?â
âYeah, letâs do it.â Fitz smiled and reached down to grab her hand again as Jemma turned the knob and opened the door to the first year Chemistry lab.
Alright, everyone. Quiet down, quiet down. If everyone could gather around, itâs time to announce who our lab teams will be for this semester. Now, before I begin I would just like to say a couple things about the team pairings. First, the partner that you are assigned will be your lab partner. No amount of begging to switch pairs will be tolerated. In fact, it will be greatly frowned upon. Second, I suggest that you come to realize that your new lab partner will be your greatest ally for the rest of this year at the Academy. You need to learn to trust your partner, to work well with them. This person that you are paired with will help you to either succeed or to fail during this first year. But, remember, you will not be guaranteed to get along with your lab partner. In fact, most people walk away from this semester being glad to be done working with their partner. However, I wish you all well, and- if you are lucky- you might just find a new friend in your lab partner. Now, I will read each lab pairing and team number. Once called, you will find your partner and make your way to your numbered lab bench. Okay, letâs begin.
Team 1. Carter Andrews and Tiffany Sloane.
Team 2. Matthew Prescott and Sarah Williams.
Team 3. Leopold Fitz and Jemma Simmons.
Team 4âŠ.
Stepping slowly through the lab door, everything was almost exactly as Fitz remembered it. Looking around, he saw the rows of numbered lab benches, clustered in groups of two, stretching back to the far end of the room. Each pair of benches was separated by a small sink, with separate faucets for hot water, cold water, and deionized water. Spread around on each of the benches were a couple of laboratory instruments- a burette, a hot plate, a Bunsen burner, and a separatory funnel. On one side of the room, three hoods were positioned, a couple of larger lab instruments contained in them. And, at the very front of the room, sat the spectrometers and the computers.
âWow, itâs exactly as I remember it,â Fitz breathed, leading Jemma around the front of the familiar room in awe.
âI know. It really is, isnât it?â Jemma responded, squeezing Fitzâs hand.
Together, they walked over to the bench labelled âTeam 3â that was positioned in the front corner of the room.
âOur old lab bench,â said Fitz.
âHey, look at that! The burn mark from when you placed that Erlenmeyer down on the lab bench- after I told you it still needed to cool- is still there. Isnât that ironic?â Jemma laughed, pointing out a circular ring of discolor on the shiny bench top.
âHa-ha, Simmons. Yes, everyone knows you were always right about everything, even as a freshman.â Fitz responded sarcastically, his eyes lighting up with a smile.
âWell, hey, I guess this means that you really left your mark here at the Academy, huh, Fitz?â Jemma questioned, another laugh filling the quietness of the lab as she leaned into his arm.
âYeah, I guess I did.â That first memory launched them both into a string of Do you remembers? causing them to laugh so hard that by the end they were nearly gasping for air, leaning forward on the familiar lab bench.
âDo you remember the time that we could not get our solution to come to boil, so we had to switch out hot plates four different times? Then, we were almost late for Professor Vaughanâs first test, so we had to run just to get to class in time? Still aced that test though.â
âDo you remember when Sally Weber dropped that $200 piece of glassware? She was okay, but her face⊠Oh, it turned bright red, she was so mortified. The poor girl. Then she had to walk up to the lab supply room and pay for it out of pocket.â
âDo you remember when Andrews played that prank on us- he always was one for pranks. He switched out our chemical for Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, which caused that giant foam explosion. Man, that was horrible. We would have been in so much trouble if we hadnât of already proved ourselves as two of the best students in the class, which was a good thing because that foam made a terrible mess over the whole lab.â
âYou are right, though. We proved that we were a great partnership from the start.â
Cadet Fitz. Cadet Simmons. I called you both into my office today because I wanted to say how impressed I have been with your work over these past two weeks. Every assignment and experiment that you have completed has been exemplary. Kudos to you both for your excellent work.
Thank you so much, sir.
Yes, thank you, sir. We have enjoyed working together so far.
Well, I best advise you to keep it up. Have a good day, Cadet Fitz and Cadet Simmons.
Good day, sir.
Good job, Fitz. Itâs been great working with you so far in the lab.
Good job to you as well, Simmons. We work well together.
That we do. Hey, what do you say if we carry over this partnership to some of our other classes. We could work on our Chemical Kinetics project together too. Professor Hall did say that we could work with a partner.
I think that would be a great idea, Simmons.
Good! Letâs head back to the library and start brainstorming. Iâm sure that together we can come up with something magnificent.
Becoming serious, Fitz stated with a shake of his head, âItâs amazing to think that this is where our partnership started. I mean, if it wasnât for this room- this lab class- we might not have been âFitzSimmonsâ. We could have just been Fitz and Simmons.â
âThatâs a horrible thing to think about isnât it? To never have found each other here at the Academy? To never have found each other at all?â Jemma responded, a frown on her face.
âIt sure is,â Fitz said, as he pulled Jemma into his side and placed a kiss on her forehead. âIâm thankful every day that we found each other and became a team.â
And so, sir, we have determined that based on the IR spectrum and the mass spec of this sample that the unknown molecule that we were given is riboflavin.
And, you, Cadet Simmons? Do you agree with Cadet Fitzâs analysis?
Of course, sir. We performed both tests together and we both agree with the conclusion that we have given you.
Excellent work, you two, as always. You both correctly identified the molecule, and in record time. Iâve never seen a lab team work as quickly and as efficiently together as you two do. Â It takes most teams the entire lab period to complete this experiment, and you have done it in almost a quarter of the time. Great work, Fitz and Simmons. You know, a lab partnership as effortless and cohesive as yours needs to have a name that reflects that natural unity. What do you say, FitzSimmons?
As they both grew serious, Jemma decided that now was as good a time as any to let Fitz in on her little secret.
âHey, Fitz?â
âHmmm?â Fitz responded, his fingers drawing light circles on her shoulder, where she was nestled under the crook of his arm. His eyes still had that far-off look as though he was still lost in a sea of memories.
âDo you ever think about taking over the Academy? Maybe running it together, as directors?â Jemma asked. This was something that shortly after their engagement, they had talked about- a possible way that they could still be closely involved with S.H.I.E.L.D. without the daily worry that their lives would be threatened by a randomly liquifying rock or a psychopathic robot.
Her question seemed to have gotten his attention, as he quickly turned his head down to meet her eyes, his eyebrows quirking up questioningly.
âUmmm, yeah, sure. Iâve thought about it a couple times.â Fitz said. âI mean, whoâs to say that we canât start up a new Academy in Scotland? Once we settle down, move to Perthshire- maybe even start a family- we could consider it more.â
âStart a family?â Jemma questioned, trying to keep her face neutral, not wanting her excitement about where his train of thought was taking him to be evident on her face.
âYeah, start a family.â Fitz smiled, his eyes looking steadily into hers. âYou know maybe in a couple years- two, maybe three years.â
âWhat about in,â Jemma breathed, unable to keep a smile from forming on her face, âthirty-five weeks?â
Fitzâs eyes immediately widened, his mouth opening slightly in shock. Jemma could see the wheels turning in his brain, the realization dawning on his face. After a few moments of stunned silence, Fitz replied, âWait. Jemma, are you sayingâŠâ
âIâm saying, Fitz, that you and I are going to be parents.â Jemma said, a wide smile filling her features.
As her words sank in, Jemma watched Fitzâs face light up, his smile growing to match hers. âReally?â he questioned.
âYes, Fitz, really,â Jemma responded, rolling her eyes fondly. âI just took the test this morning. And, then just to be sure, I even ran a blood test on myself in the lab while you were meeting with Coulson. I wanted to be positive before I surprised you.â Jemma responded, unable to keep her giddy smile from her face. âSo, surprise!â
Fitz responded by chuckling lightly and pulling her tighter against him as she could practically feel him smiling against her forehead. They stood like that for a few minutes and when Jemma pulled away to meet Fitzâs eyes, she could see that they were slightly misty. She could tell he was excited, but also slightly nervous. In the past couple of months, they had talked together many times about becoming parents and she knew that Fitz had some doubts about becoming a father- especially considering his own childhood. But, Jemma did not have a single doubt in her mind that Fitz would do everything in his power to love and protect this little baby that they had been given. Just like he had always done everything in his power to love and protect her.
âFitz, you are going to be the most amazing father. There is no one else that I would even think about doing this with. I love you so much.â
âI love you too, Jemma. And, I am nervous about being a dad, but, you know, as long as Iâve got you by my side, I think I can do just about anything. I mean, look where we are standing, Jemma. Itâs here where it all started. And, I couldnât be more grateful for those memories or for the memories that we are bound to make in the future with this little one,â Fitz smiled, his eyes sparkling with unshed tears as they flicked down to her still flat stomach. Jemma could see an overpowering amount of love in his eyes- love both for her and for their unborn child. The sight of it nearly made her heart burst in her chest. Â
Fitz leaned down to kiss her then. When he pulled away, he rested his forehead on hers, their smiles lighting up both of their faces. The love for each other and for their baby shining in their eyes. They stood in the dimly lit Chemistry lab for several moments after that, swaying against each other as they whispered hopes and plans for their life ahead of them. And there- amidst the memories of their first partnership, the very beginnings of their friendship- their dreams for their future began to unfold.

Today I Learned: Today is Nature Methods review day! This month's Nature Methods is fantastic. Let me share my favorite highlights, in order of appearance, chosen purely based on my interest: 1) In 2012, IBM held an open challenge to come up with programs that could automatically segment* EM images of neurons. These are extremely difficult images to automatically quantify, which is one the (many) big barriers to eventual whole-brain mapping. The challenge is still open, and this year a team from Heidelberg, Germany sumitted an algorithm with roughly half the error rate of the 2012 winner. Their algorithm is pretty sophisticated. It *starts* with a round of machine learning with either a random forest or a convolutional neural net, which assigns a probability of being a cell border to each pixel in the image. Convolutional neural nets are really powerful, so it makes sense to throw them at the segmentation problem. There is an issue, however, that convolutional neural nets (at least, the kind applied in this algorithm) aren't very good at seeing long-distance relationships in an image, so neural-net-only segmentation is a bit too local. The author's solution is to group pixels into "superpixels" using a watershed algorithm, which produces relatively large regions that are still no larger than a whole neuron (and very likely to be entirely contained within a *single* neuron). Watersheding is a pretty standard segmentation technique, and it's usually pretty good at separating cells but tends to overagressively cut them into multiple segments. The final step in this segmentation algorithm is to try to combine superpixels until they get the best possible region. This is done by treating superpixels as nodes in a graph, with borders between superpixels as edges between the corresponding nodes. Based on the pixels on the border, "attractive" or "repulsive" weights are assigned to the edges -- the more the pixels on a border look like an actual cell border, the more repulsive the weight between the nodes representing the corresponding superpixels. This graph representation gives what's known as the "Lifted Multicut" problem -- I'll have to direct the reader to their paper for the details (http://ift.tt/2lK6P7T, paywalled). In any case, they solve the lifted multicut problem on the graph (approximately -- it's an NP-hard problem), which gives a grouping of superpixels into individual segmented cells. * segmenting, in this case, means finding the borders of cells. 2) This issue features a simulation-based review of RNA-seq* aligners**. Perhaps unsurprisingly, which aligner is best depends a lot on the size and complexity of the genome being seq-ed. Distressingly enough, even the best algorithms in the best conditions rarely breached 90% accuracy. Also distressingly, some of the most popular aligners (tophat, I'm looking at you!) don't perform very well at all using default parameters, though they improve if you tune their parameters well. The best and most consistent aligners seem to be CLC, Novoalign, GSNAP, and STAR. No great surprises there, though I'm pleasantly surprised by how well CLC performs. * Quantitative sequencing of RNA -- basically tells you with very high precision how much of every RNA species is present in a cell or tissue ** Raw RNA-seq data consists of fragments ("reads") of 50-300 bp. Aligners are the programs that map those reads onto known or unknown RNA species. 3) The most distressing, cruel, and ultimately perhaps most important article long-term involves artificially inducing (reversibly!) targeted strokes in mice, using injectible magnetic nanoparticles. You inject the nanoparticles into the bloodstream, then put a magnet near a microvessel feeding some area of the brain. The nanoparticles aggregate in the vessel, closing it off and stroking everything downstream. This is one case where I, despite being generally vegan, wholeheartedly support targeted cruelty in the name of science. About one in twenty people in the US die from strokes. That's a lot of lives. If a few thousand mice with artificial strokes can help prevent just a few percent of those stroke deaths, it will easily make up the difference in suffering in the first year of prevention. There aren't many clearer-cut cases of moral calculus in my experience. 4) Non-amplified whole-genome single-cell sequencing! DNA sequencing today is typically done one of two ways -- either by pooling the DNA from many cells (usually from the same tissue), or by extracting DNA from a single cell and amplifying it with PCR. The former strategy gives much cleaner data, with better genome coverage, but loses information about single-cell variation (which is super important for understanding cancer biology). The single-cell strategy gives you information about cell-to-cell genome variations, but the amplification process can introduce a lot of coverage bias, and can add spurious single-nucleotide variations (SNPs). A team from the University of British Colombia had the bold idea of sequencing from single cells... WITHOUT amplifying! Through a combination of nanoliter volume reactions (done with microfluidics), direct tagging of genomic DNA (not particularly novel), and steel balls (metaphorically), they sequenced a few thousand cells, at a cost of about $0.50/cell and ~2.5 hours/192 cells. They only got about 0.05-0.1x coverage from each sequence run... but they can run a lot of them, which collectively can be used to analyze population variation in, say, a tumor. 5) A University of Freiburg team demonstrated a technique for tracking large-scale conformational changes in protein structure in real-time, using FRET networks. FRET is a technique that takes advantage of the fact that when placed close together, many fluorophores will transfer energy from one to another. So if you watch two fluorophores as they get closer together, they can shift pretty substantially in brightness... which means you can use the relative brightness of two fluorophores as a measure of how close together they are. The authors of this paper tagged a heat shock protein with a bunch of different FRETable fluorophores and watched them all simultaneously, giving them a real-time map of distances between different domains over time. Very cool technique! 6) UC Santa Barbera mechanical engineers, physicists, and biologists came up with a new way to measure mechanical forces in living tissues. Basically, they use ferrofluids (http://ift.tt/1h7q0GS) as a mechanical probe -- apply a changing magnetic field, and the ferrofluid will push against the tissue. By comparing how much the ferrofluid and tissue each deform to what you would expect from the amount of energy added to the ferrofluid, you can back out the internal forces at play in the tissue. 7) A HUGE question in microbiology -- and, indeed, biology at large -- is "what the heck do all those genes do?". Many, many sequenced genes have no known function (example -- until the paper I'm about to describe, 1,275 of the genes in E. coli were "functionally uncharacterized"), and it's notoriously difficult ot figure out what a gene does without some existing hint. Enter The Institute of Molecular Systems Biology in ZĂŒrich, and their new technique for identifying enzymes from pools of uncharacterized genes. The technique is almost stupidly simple in its basic principle. Here's what you do: 1) Purify or overexpress a ton of a protein with no known function; 2) Mix up a cocktail of lots of known metabolites found in the cell; 3) Add the protein to the cocktail; 4) Mass-spec the cocktail before and after protein addition to find out how much of each metabolite is there. If you see one molecular species reduced in the protein-added cocktail and another closely-related molecule go up, you can infer that the protein converted the former into the latter. Instant enzyme identification! The tricky part here seems to me to be the mass spec you do. The authors used flow injection time-of-flight mass spectrometry... which as far as I'm concerned, is definitely some kind of mass spec. By screening against about 960 pooled metabolites, they found about 250 new enzymes, with functions. 8) There's a new variant on the old CRISPR-based cell lineage tracing idea*, this one also out Church Lab, Harvard. It's a simple tweak of the idea of introducing a Cas9 target as a mutational hotspot -- the difference here being that they simultaneously target a guide RNA to a genomic target (the "hotspot") and to *itself*. The guide RNA and hotspot then evolve semi-independently. For a couple of different reasons, this gives you a lot more variation in the kind and number of mutations you can see. This technique provides about twice as many bits of identifying information per hotspot as a vanilla CRISPR-based lineage tracking array. * Here's the gist -- say you want to know the ancestry of every cell in an organism, from the fertilized egg to each cell of the adult. One way to get that information is to put the organism under a microscope and watch the whole thing grow -- that's how we mapped the C. elegans cell fate map (that's what developmental biologists call that sort of cellular family tree). It might work for some other species, like early-life fruit flies or zebrafish... but there's no way you're going to be able to trace the cell lineages of every cell in a mouse by microscopy. For one thing, it grows in a womb, so you can't just put it on a slide while it grows. For another thing, a mouse isn't see-through. And finally, it's just too damned big to watch the whole thing with the resolution required to track individual cells. What you *can* do is track mutations in the cells. Cells accumulate mutations as the organism grows, and you can use those mutations to reconstruct a lineage tree the same way evolutionary biologists reconstruct evolutionary trees. As in, it's literally the same thing. Same algorithms, at least. The problem with *that* is that it's pretty difficult to sequence a single cell's genome with enough precision and coverage to catch all of its mutations accurately (though see #4 above for some improvement in that area....), and it would be VERY difficult to do that for every single cell in a large organism. A way to simplify that kind of mutation-tracking is to introduce a mutational hotspot into the organism's genome. If it mutates at the right rate, you can just sequence *that* portion of the genome, which is much, much easier than sequencing the whole thing. A simple form of mutational hotspot is a target for an active CRISPR/Cas9 system -- Cas9 will cut the hotspot, which the cell can repair, but the repair process tends to introduce mutations. 9)

The S3 articles were really bare not popular like say 3dfx so I filled in the Virge and Savage articles. Which also is evident from the connector itself. They added single-pass multi-texturing, meaning the board could sample 2 textures per pixel in one pass not one clock cycle through the rendering engine instead of halving its texture fillrate in dual-textured games like Savage 3D.
Details are as follows: Thanx â I sent you a P. There is no material that is knowingly illegal here. Unfortunately for S3, deliveries of the Savage3D were hampered by poor manufacturing yields.
Not only that, but S3TC allowed these much higher quality textures to be rendered with negligible performance impact. I tried it with Quake 3 and couldnât feel a speed change but there were graphics issues that appeared.
Remove the acceleration, if it is not removed. I dont know who buys cards from them these days.

Also it doesnât like vertex arrays in GL either as much as other cards, causing some normals to break up as unintended such as in their favorite game, Quake III Arena and some glColor calls getting more saturated primary colors than the real color it tried to use.

The $799 Coinmine One Will Look Like an Xbox and Mint Crypto Money
Try as startups might, crypto mining hasnât yet had an everyman device.
Smart money, however, is betting that will change at the hands of a new company called Coinmine. Announced Wednesday, the startup is revealing its first product, the Coinmine One, a hardware device aimed at crypto enthusiasts whoâd like to earn rewards for mining blockchains â without the need to learn a new technical skill set.
Backed by investors including Coinbase Ventures and Arrington Capital, angel investors Balaji Srinivasan (now CTO of Coinbase and a former mining entrepreneur), Morgan Creek partner Anthony Pompliano and Product Hunt co-founder Ryan Hoover also participated in the undisclosed funding.
The Coinmine One will retail for $799 and start shipping in mid-December, though the company declined to give a precise date or name a specific goal for sales. Still, CEO Farbood Nivi told CoinDesk in interview that the company believes its mining product has mass-market appeal.
Nivi explained:
âWe think thereâs a market for millions, if not tens of millions.â
One investor, Chapter One Ventures, explicitly backed the project because it wants to see more ways for everyday people to get involved in supporting cryptocurrency infrastructure.
âCoinmine will democratize access to becoming a miner in a fun and approachable way that almost feels like playing a video game,â its founder, Jeff Morris, Jr., told CoinDesk.
Digging into the details
For $799, the Coinmine One will sport a miner that can generate any one of the following out of the box: ether (ETH) at 29 Mh/sec, monero (XMR) at 900 h/sec, zcash (ZEC) at 320 h/sec and ether classic. With updates next year, it also expects to be able to run a stake for a Bitcoin Lightning node, Dfinity or Filecoin.
It uses roughly as much power (120 watts) as a PlayStation 3 during game play and runs at 40 decibels (quiet compared to the cacophony created by other mining products). With a profile like the one above, most people probably wouldnât be horrified about it being visible in a room that a guest might visit.
More importantly, in an effort to make the product as user-friendly as possible, the system will be automatically updated as changes are made on the protocol and as more coins become available. Users will be able to monitor their earnings and manage them using an Android or iOS app (seen below).
If the company is right and consumers love it, donât look for todayâs mining hobbyists to agree. Thereâs nothing about its specs that compares to other miners sold on the market today that those much more tech savvy users are using. Coinmine Oneâs hash rate is much lower than those devices, and the price for its hash rate is higher.
But these issues, Nivi argues, miss a larger point.
Even if the current miners cost a third as much, he says they would still be out of reach to normal people: the ones who donât know how to set them up or lack a place to store and operate hardware heats up quickly and generates a lot of noise. And they wonât know how to update them when protocols change, either.
Nivi and his company are betting, therefore, that there are people who want a way to participate in mining but want a lower path of entry. Another way to think of Coinmine is that itâs building on the market concept proven by what Honeyminer runs on PCs.
The CEO emphasizes the fact that the Coinmine One will remove some of the hardest work from users. He said: âThe one thing thatâs consistent in crypto is that itâs constantly changing and evolving. Coinmine is the only solution that makes it possible to continually be a part of that.â
Home mining is hard
That said, the business of selling home miners has not gone well historically.
Names like Butterfly Labs, Alpha Technology and GAW Miners comprise just part of a long history of mining product makers that didnât stand the test of time (or didnât devolve into outright fraud).
Other companies failed to balance the production-intensive process of making hardware with the demands of retail customers â particularly when the making of that hardware didnât go according to plan. Even those that played the game by the book were unable to survive for the long-term, especially when contending with the downturn in cryptocurrency prices in 2015.
Case in point: a little piece of home mining history wrapped up this year when Josh Garza was convicted of wire fraud.
Garzaâs company, GAWMiners, first made its mark by reselling imported mining equipment, and later expanded its business by hosting miners and then, later, offering so-called âvirtual minersâ that were later deemed securities.
Ultimately, it was Bitmain â with its economy-of-scale, access to cheap power and operation of mining services on both the hardware and software side â that came out on top, though other companies have emerged with possible competitive edges. And to this day, Bitmain still makes budget miners that could be affordable for a middle-class American consumer who owns a big garage (and a patient family tolerant of noise).
And yet it only takes a glance at any of these products to see an immediate difference from Coinmine One. ASIC miners look like enormous shoe boxes with a fan in a cage stuck to one end, like something that really doesnât belong anywhere but a garage (unless someone wants to try to use one as a way of providing electric heating, an approach CoinDesk once proposed).
More importantly, the prior generation of miners look like companies took their pro versions and scaled them down a bit in price, noise and voltage, without fundamentally rethinking the design or user experience.
âIf you go and buy these crypto devices online they sound like there is a vacuum cleaner running constantly,â Nivi said.
At 40 decibels, the Coinmine One shouldnât even be noticeable, and, with its low electricity consumption, a userâs utility bills shouldnât jump aggressively. Which isnât to say that the business will be any easier, but it does support their case that the devices exist in a new category.
The HODLer Argument
The evolution of miners from home-based enthusiasts to industrial-scale behemoths highlights the fundamental business model of a miner: a kind of arbitrage where profits are made when the cost of energy is lower than the return on the cryptocurrencies mined and sold.
But Nivi argues that the Coinmine One is intended technology enthusiasts rather than profit seekers â as in, people who want to try out different protocols and interact with the communities behind them â while also having some skin in the game. More broadly, itâs for people with a long-time horizon who arenât focused on making enough cash to keep the lights on and miners humming.
The Coinmine One isnât single-use hardware, either. That said, it can only run one of a few proof-of-work tokens at a time. With forthcoming updates, it will also be able to run one of several proof-of-stake tokens as well.
This differentiates it from most other miners, built to mine as much as possible of just one coin. Take for example these two ETH miners. They cost twice as much but they also deliver about six times more hash power.
That might make it sound like Coinmine One is a bad deal, but that depends on a personâs situation. Someone living in an urban apartment, for example, could never run one of those miners, even if they could afford it.
The startup appears to be aiming to create a new product category in the mining sector.
âThe real magic of the product is the software and hardware compatibility, which reminds me of Nest or Ring,â Morris told CoinDesk, referring to the unicorn startups that built mobile-enabled home thermostat and home security devices. Each were subsequently acquired at unicorn valuations, by Google and Amazon, respectively.
Even still, is the Coinmine One worth it?
One danger some users might foresee is that lots of people will buy it making the tokens it mines less lucrative for each miner. Nivi points out that they will keep adding new tokens, giving users options. Furthermore, though, he also contends that more miners means more value for what miners do earn.
âWhile more people mining a coin can decrease the amount of coins you earn, it also increases the value of the network,â he said.
Normally, in discussion of mining equipment, users calculate how long it will take them to recoup their capital expenditure in fiat from earnings in crypto. In conversation with CoinDesk, Nivi rejected that short-term analysis.
He said:
âIf youâre doing this from home, itâs bad advice to buy and sell. You really should hold. Youâre holding and waiting for it to 10X, 100X or 1000X.â
