Something that stood out to me in my aftg reread was how unhinged the upperclassmen actually are.

Matt fucking Boyd and his willingness to absolutely go at anyone, anywhere, any time. There's a scene where Kevin tells him to foul another player on the opposing team and Neil specifically points out the unrepentant grin he has on his face as he waltzes off court after it happens. He also is described as the best player on the foxes line up multiple times by Neil and his play style is aggressive, he uses his height and build to his advantage and he doesn't hold back.

Allison and Andrew have the exact same style of serving cunt, in that if you don't interest them they will not even acknowledge your existence. A player from another team attempted to score on the goal and both Allison and Andrew stood still and watched them miss with such bitchy indifference it probably gave that player ptsd. They also both have a habit of cutting through bullshit and demanding truth ESPECIALLY regarding topics other people would shy away from. Badass blonde bombshells.

Dan Wilds is just as rabid about Exy as Kevin and her every first thought goes to the game first just like Kevin. She's just better at making her second thought go to something else. She literally knew the second Seth was out of the picture that there was an opportunity there and she didn't even really hesitate to talk to Matt about it. She looked at Neil and whatever fucked up little thing he had going on with Andrew (as it would have looked to an outsider, let's remember that they all knew Andrew took him to Columbia and drugged him) and was like, how can we use this to make the team stronger. Like Nicky used Neil to manipulate Andrew but Dan did it better and with much more calculation.

Renee I don't even really need to talk about because Neil was always wary of her but there is one scene where Neil let's slip about his father's penchant for knives and Renee's reaction and understanding gave me chills. Renee uses that part of her to protect and that's really great because she would be terrifying otherwise.

All for the Game Name Meanings

Not really a meta, just something I, a name nerd with Biblical trivia galore, noticed during my read. Most of the names are probably deliberate.

Neil - champion

Kevin - beloved

Andrew - manly, strong, warrior; Joseph - God will add another son (aka, a reference to him having a secret brother)

Aaron - strong, exalted; Michael - who is like God?

Nicky - victory of the people; Esteban - crown

Erik - eternal ruler (works well when combined with Nicky's name and with Nicky's declaration that he "always will" love Erik)

Matt - gift of God (also tax collector who gave up his former life as a rich man in the bible)

Dan - God is my judge (also a biblical prophet who was a noted leader among other young men carried away from their home)

Allison - noble, likely a reference to her backstory as an heiress.

David - beloved and possibly uncle (Yes, his name means the same as his son's name, and also references his role in the lives of his Foxes. It's also the name of a biblical king, David, as in David vs Goliath, which sums up the Foxes' season)

Abby - joy of the father (more relevantly, the wife of the biblical King David); Winfield - self explanatory, win on the field

Renee - light (so combined with "Walker" she's walking the path of light); Natalie - born on Christmas; Shields - self-explanatory

Jean - God is gracious

Jeremy - God will uplift (hence his role in Jean's life)

Katelyn - pure heart

Mary - bitter, a reference to her personality

Maria - also bitter, a reference to her personality

Luther - clearly a reference to Martin Luther, but also means "army of the people" which is interesting when compared to the name of his son Nicky.

Drake - dragon; Spear - weapon (specifically a phallic one).

Ichirou - first son (一郎), contains the kanji for "one" aka the number Riko tattoos to himself and obsesses over.

Riko - usually a feminine name that means jasmine. The specific meaning of Riko's name can't be determined without kanji, which I can't find, but it's obviously not the feminine one meaning jasmine. My best guess is that it is 利皇, which contains the kanji for blade/sharp, and for king. I'd bet having a name that is traditionally feminine didn't help Riko's complexes.

Kengo - uncertain again because the kanji determines the meaning, but a lot of meanings involve "strength," so I would guess one of those.

Nathan - "gift of God" I mean honestly, he's anything but, but the point of his name is really that Neil gets to delete the first part of his birth name, Nathaniel, which also means gift of God, and keep the last four letters just rearranged and thereby become his own champion.

You'll notice three father-son pairs--Nathan and Nathaniel, Luther and Nicholas, and David and Kevin--have names that match meanings almost exactly. For Nathan and Neil as well as Luther and Nicky, the sons break from their fathers; for Kevin and David, the son returns.
