"Boil water to turn fan" as if multistage steam turbine generators are not one of the sexiest kinds of machines every made
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
nuclear power is impressive until you get up to why. "we use the most precisely engineered machinery ever created to split atoms to release energy" oh yeah how come? "boil water to turn a fan" get the fuck out
#its genuinely crazy the math and engineering that go into making these absolutely massive steam turbines#its an incredible balancing act to optimize between the interconnected variables of pressure velocity and temperature in order#to extract as much energy as possible from the steam as it moves through the system#especially like. those generators need to maintain a very precise rotational speed in order to prevent the coupled generator#from going out of phase with the power grid#(3000 RPM for 50 Hz grids and 3600 RPM for 60 Hz grids)#like the reactor part sounds like a lot of engineering work (and it is!) but like. the turbine is fucking incredibly impressive too#each one of those turbine stages needs to have very specifically shaped blades in order to control steam pressure drop and steam velocity#and the blades need to be able to physically handle being in a wet (at least for nuclear plants where the steam is pretty wet) high temp#environment and constantly being spun at high rotational speeds for decades at a time.#we had to develop specialized nickel titanium superalloys with tightly controlled crystalline structures in order to build turbines this big#stare into the depths of “wow we really just use steam to spin a big fan that sounds simple” and you encounter#the lifes work of thousands of mathematicians computer engineers material scientists and mechanical engineers#the first device we could call a steam turbine was made as a toy in tthe first century ancient greece and egypt#the first steam turbine with a practical use was described in 1551 in Ottoman Egypt. it was used to turn a spit of meat over a fire.#the first modern multistage impluse steam turbine was made in 1884 and revolutionized electricity generation and marine propulsion#in the 141 years since there have been more improvements than one could even list#from major design changes credited to great men to miniscule efficiencies and optimizations gained from tweaking the composition of an alloy#idk. i think its beautiful to think about the web of human knowledge woven collectively by thousands of hands across history#could you imagine what the ancient greek engineers who first put together the prototype for an aeolipile would think to see what we have#made now. could they even recognize our designs as belonging to the same category of object as their little toy#anyway#appreciate the humble steam turbine with the same eye you give to the reactor core#mine#just my thoughts

Web Development in 2025: Why It Still Matters (Even in the Age of AI)
Do We Still Need Web Developers in 2025?
With AI software and drag-and-drop site creators all around, you may be thinking:
"Do we really need web developers anymore?"
Yes—more than ever.
While Wix or Webflow may appear good-looking and easy to work with, actual web development is what really drives the internet in the background. It's what enables websites to be fast, secure, flexible, and scalable.
Why Website Builders Are Not Enough for Serious Businesses
No-code tools are perfect for small projects—personal blogs or basic portfolios.
But if you're developing:
A fast-growing startup
A secure business or enterprise website
A tailored online store
High-traffic blog or SaaS product
Why custom development is better:
Faster loading speeds
Unique and better user experience
Full control of your data
Stronger SEO (more visibility on Google)
Stronger security and easier scaling
Big Web Trends in 2025
The web is changing fast. Keeping up means more than just updating themes. Here's what's big this year:
1. AI for Smarter Websites
AI solutions such as ChatGPT and Framer AI assist websites in providing improved, customized experiences.
Consider:
Chatbots that know you
Self-writing pages
Dashboards that adapt to your routines
2. Headless CMS & Composable Sites
You don't have to be tied to one-size-fits-all platforms anymore. Headless sites enable you to pick your front-end and back-end independently.
Popular tools: Storyblok, Contentful, Sanity, Next.js, Laravel
3. Core Web Vitals Matter for SEO
Speed and user experience matter to Google. When your site is slow to load or visually jumpy, it gets scored lower.
Prioritize:
Quick loading (LCP)
Quick click responsiveness (FID)
Visual stability (CLS)
4. Mobile-First & Accessible to All
The majority of users are on mobile phones, so make mobile your first design priority. Also, obey accessibility guidelines (WCAG) so your site is accessible to all—and continues to meet new regulations.
What New Sites Are Made Of
There is no single right setup, but contemporary web applications tend to employ:
Frontend: React, Vue, Next.js
Backend: Node.js, Laravel
CMS: Headless WordPress, Sanity, or custom configurations
Hosting: Vercel, Netlify, AWS
Database: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Supabase
Security: HTTPS, SSL, user roles, OWASP best practices
DevOps Tools: GitHub Actions, Docker, CI/CD pipelines
Security Isn't Just a Plugin
Security must be an integral part of your site from the beginning—not an afterthought.
In 2025, secure sites require:
End-to-end encryption
2FA for logins
Real-time threat detection
Regular code updates
Firewalls & DDoS protection
Clean, secure code (OWASP recommendations)
Using WordPress? Use trusted plugins such as:
Wordfence
iThemes Security
Sucuri
Final Thoughts: Why Custom Code Still Matters
AI is smart. No-code is convenient.
But if you're concerned about:
Website speed
Flexibility
A brand new look
Trust among users
Long-term growth
Security
Exceptional websites don't simply launch live—they're intentionally designed, engineered, and made better in time.
Let's Build Something Great Together
At DazzleBirds, we create modern, fast, secure websites with the industry's best tools.
We're not just developers—we're your long-term strategy, design, and growth partners.

into you | kim seokjin pt. 1

Summary: Kim Seokjin finds himself entangled in a complex web of emotions when he meets the journalist covering his new series, challenging everything he is.
taglist (hit me up if you wanna be added): @aretha170 , @jinniegenie , @mooniyooni .@we8joon , @njrwifey, @woncheecks
requests are open, but you can just say hi! | bts masterlist
The flashbulbs popped incessantly, their sharp bursts of light illuminating the sleek, modern interior of the London hotel's conference room. At the center of this maelstrom of media attention stood Kim Seokjin, his perfectly coiffed hair and designer suit a stark contrast to the casual attire of the assembled journalists. His megawatt smile, the one that had graced countless movie posters and magazine covers, was firmly in place as he fielded questions about his latest career move.
"Mr. Kim," a reporter called out, "how does it feel to be the first male asian lead in a Bridgerton series?"
Jin's smile never wavered as he responded, his English crisp and barely accented. "It's an honor and a tremendous responsibility. I'm thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking moment in television history."
From her position near the back of the room, Y/N fought the urge to roll her eyes. She'd heard similar platitudes from countless celebrities over the years, and as a senior writer for Spotlight, one of the entertainment industry's most respected magazines, she'd developed a finely-tuned bullshit detector. There was something in Jin's perfectly rehearsed answers that didn't sit right with her.
As the press conference continued, Y/N observed Jin closely. Behind the charm and the practiced responses, she caught glimpses of something else – a tightness around his eyes, a barely perceptible pause before certain answers. He was nervous, she realized. The great Kim Seokjin, A-list actor and Asia's sweetheart, was out of his depth.
When it was her turn to ask a question, Y/N didn't hold back. "Mr. Kim," she began, her tone professional but with an edge that made Jin's eyes snap to hers, "your casting has been met with mixed reactions. Some praise it as a step forward for diversity, while others question whether an actor known primarily for modern roles can authentically portray a Regency-era character. How do you respond to critics who say you were cast more for your star power than your suitability for the role?"
A hush fell over the room. Jin's smile faltered for a split second before he regained his composure. "I understand the concerns," he said, his voice steady but with a new intensity. "Throughout my career, I've always sought to challenge myself with diverse roles. While it's true that this is my first period drama, I've been working tirelessly to immerse myself in the era and the character. I was cast because the producers believe in my ability to bring Lord Christopher Hawthorne to life. I intend to prove them right – and to prove the critics wrong."
Their eyes locked, a silent battle of wills. Y/N saw a flicker of something in Jin's gaze – defiance, perhaps, or determination. For a moment, the carefully constructed movie star facade slipped, revealing a glimpse of the man beneath.
The moment passed as quickly as it had come. Jin turned to answer another question, but Y/N noticed that his responses had lost some of their polish. She had rattled him, and a small part of her – the part that had clawed its way up from intern to senior writer in a cutthroat industry – felt a twinge of satisfaction.
As the press conference wound down, Y/N hung back, observing Jin as he chatted with a few lingering reporters. His charm was back in full force, but now that she had seen behind the curtain, she couldn't unsee the subtle signs of strain.
Back at the Spotlight offices, Y/N's fingers flew over her keyboard as she typed up her article. Her editor, Yannie, peered over her shoulder.
"Well?" she asked. "What's the verdict on our Hollywood heartthrob?"
Y/N leaned back in her chair, considering. "He's... interesting," she said finally. "Charming, obviously. But there's more there. He's not as confident as he wants us to believe."
Yannie raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Do tell."
"He's taking a huge risk with this role," Y/N explained. "It could make or break his career. He knows it, and he's terrified."
"Sounds like there's a story there," Yannie mused.
Y/N nodded, already formulating angles in her mind. "Oh, there is. The question is whether he'll let anyone tell it."
The article Y/N penned was a masterclass in nuanced criticism. She praised Jin's ambition and the groundbreaking nature of his casting while questioning Hollywood's motives. Was this a genuine step towards diversity, or a calculated move to tap into the global Asian market? She highlighted Jin's lack of experience in period dramas and the immense pressure he faced stepping into such an iconic role.
The piece went viral within hours of publication. #JinInBridgerton trended on Twitter, with fans and critics alike dissecting Y/N's every word. Jin himself remained silent on social media, but Y/N had a feeling her article had struck a nerve.
She was proven right a few days later when Jin appeared on The Late Late Show. The host, after some playful banter about Jin's transition from action movies to Regency romance, brought up Y/N's article.
"So, Jin," the host said, his tone light but his eyes gleaming with the scent of potential drama, "there's been a lot of buzz about your casting. One article, in particular, has gotten a lot of attention. Any thoughts?"
Jin's laugh was perfectly calibrated to sound carefree. "Oh, you know how it is," he said, waving a hand dismissively. "There's always someone looking to stir up controversy. I try not to pay too much attention to it."
"But this writer, Y/N from Spotlight, she raised some interesting points about diversity in Hollywood and the challenges you might face in this role," the host pressed.
For a split second, Jin's mask slipped. Y/N, watching the interview from her apartment, leaned forward, catching the flash of irritation in his eyes before his smile reasserted itself.
"Look," Jin said, his tone a touch cooler than before, "I respect everyone's right to their opinion. But at the end of the day, I was cast because I'm right for this role. I'm here to act, not to be a poster boy for diversity or to debate Hollywood politics. I'll let my performance speak for itself."
The host, sensing he'd struck gold, opened his mouth to ask a follow-up question, but Jin smoothly changed the subject, regaling the audience with a humorous anecdote about learning to ride horses for the show. The moment passed, but Y/N knew she'd gotten under his skin.
As the Bridgerton production ramped up, Y/N found herself assigned to cover various aspects of the show's development. She attended costume fittings, watched rehearsals from afar, and interviewed supporting cast members. But Jin remained elusive, always just out of reach.
It was at one of these events – a press day showcasing the show's elaborate sets – that Y/N first encountered Kyrie Evans, Jin's co-star and leading lady. Fresh off her Golden Globe win for a gritty indie drama, Kyrie was Hollywood's newest darling, her casting in Bridgerton seen as a coup for the show.
Kyrie was everything Jin wasn't – effortlessly cool, refreshingly candid, and undeniably talented. As Y/N watched her interact with the press, she couldn't help but draw comparisons to Jin's more guarded approach.
"Ms. Evans," Y/N said when she got her chance to speak with the actress, "your casting alongside Jin has generated a lot of excitement. How has it been working with him so far?"
Kyrie's smile was warm and genuine. "Oh, it's been wonderful," she gushed. "Jin is such a professional, always prepared and ready to give 110%. And let me tell you, the man can smolder like nobody's business. Our chemistry readings nearly set the room on fire!"
Y/N raised an eyebrow at this, her journalistic instincts tingling. "That's quite an endorsement," she said carefully. "Some have questioned whether Jin has the acting chops to carry a show of this caliber. It sounds like you disagree?"
For a moment, Kyrie's sunny demeanor faltered. "I think," she said, choosing her words with care, "that people will be very surprised by Jin's performance. He's not just a pretty face or a famous name. He's a dedicated artist who's pouring his heart and soul into this role."
As Kyrie moved on to the next reporter, Y/N mulled over her words. There was sincerity there, certainly, but also a hint of something else. Protectiveness, perhaps? Or was Kyrie simply playing the game, talking up her co-star as expected?
The interaction with Kyrie, brief as it was, added another layer to the complex picture Y/N was forming of the Bridgerton production. As she left the set that day, her mind was already piecing together the elements of her next article.
But the entertainment world never stands still, and the Jin-Kyrie dynamic was about to be complicated by an unexpected player.
News broke late one evening of a surprise announcement: Jeon Jungkook, a rising solo artist making waves in the music industry, was gearing up to release his first album. The internet exploded with excitement, #JungkookIsComing trending worldwide within minutes.
Y/N, like any entertainment journalist worth their salt, immediately began connecting the dots. Would this major music event affect the buzz around Bridgerton and Jin's high-profile role?
As she dug deeper, combing through social media and reaching out to industry contacts, Y/N stumbled upon something curious. A series of photos from a music awards show afterparty several months back showed Jungkook in deep conversation with none other than Kyrie Evans. In one blurry shot, their heads were bent close together, Kyrie's hand on Jungkook's arm.
It could be nothing, Y/N knew. Celebrities mingled all the time at such events. But her instincts told her there was more to the story.
The next day, as Y/N was piecing together her notes on the Jungkook announcement, her editor Yannie called her into her office.
"I've got a proposition for you," she said without preamble. "We want to do a deep dive on Jin's Bridgerton journey. Behind-the-scenes, exclusive access, the whole nine yards. I want you on it."
Y/N blinked in surprise. "Me? Are you sure? Jin and I... well, we haven't exactly hit it off."
Yannie grinned. "Exactly. You've gotten under his skin. You've challenged him. That's exactly the kind of energy we want for this piece. We don't need another puff piece about how dreamy he looks in Regency costumes. We want the real story – the struggles, the doubts, the triumphs. You're the one who can get it."
As the implications of the assignment sank in, Y/N felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. This was a huge opportunity, the kind that could catapult her career to new heights. But it also meant spending extended time with Jin, a prospect that filled her with an emotion she couldn't quite name.
"What about access?" she asked. "Jin's team hasn't exactly been forthcoming so far."
Yannie's grin widened. "Already taken care of. I've been in talks with the show's producers. They love the idea of an in-depth feature. Jin's been informed. He's... well, let's say he's agreed to cooperate."
Y/N could only imagine how that conversation had gone. She pictured Jin's face, that perfect mask cracking under the strain of forced politeness. Despite herself, she felt a twinge of sympathy for him. This couldn't be easy for him either.
"Alright," she said finally. "I'm in."
As she left Yannie's office, her mind was already racing with possibilities. This was her chance to really dig into Jin's story, to peel back the layers of celebrity and find the human being underneath. It was also, she realized with a mixture of anticipation and dread, a chance for Jin to challenge her own preconceptions.
The next few months promised to be a rollercoaster. Y/N took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders. Whatever happened, she was determined to tell this story – Jin's story – with all the complexity and nuance it deserved.
Little did she know that this assignment would not only change her career but would also set her on a collision course with destiny, one that would intertwine her fate with Jin's in ways neither of them could have imagined.
As she gathered her things to leave the office, Y/N's phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number. Her breath caught as she read the message:
"Ms. Y/N, I look forward to our upcoming collaboration. Let's both do our best to uncover the truth. - Kim Seokjin"

okay i Need to know about abstergo cloning and weaponizing altaïr my brain is buzzing just reading that
Okay, so first, there's two facts we need to remember about altaïr: he is practically a religious figure to the assassins, and he is a fucking killing machine.
The next thing we need to remember is abstergo has cloning technology, and quite reasonably, access to desmonds DNA any time after his initial kidnapping. They also have the Animus, for accessing ancestral memories.
So, with those things kept in mind, what might Abstergo do with these pieces?
Abstergo sees, through Desmonds time as Altaïr, that altaïr is an absolute force to be reckoned with. He can take down a dozen trained soldiers alone. He can take down a dozen trained assassins alone. When he is loyal to a cause, he will not let ANYTHING get in the way of his goals.
So you clone him using Desmonds DNA. So you implant his memories into the clone using a focused and intense application of the Bleeding Effect.
And, importantly, there is a couple very good frames of time where you might be able to manipulate him into working for the templars. Or, successfully convincing him abstergo is the assassins, and the assassins are the templars.
The first one is immediately after he fails to get the piece of eden and is demoted. He has lost everything, been called a traitor, and if you time giving him memories correctly, believes he has been killed for this. So you tell him: you are meant for greater things, we of the future have saved you, and we have an enemy for you to destroy to set the world right. You have seen the leadership of the assassins fail, and we have learned from the mistakes of the templars of the past. The assassins are failing again, and the end of the world is near. They are trying to prevent us from saving it. You must stop them.
The second time is a bit more tricky: right after he kills Al Mualim. The end of the memories you have easy access to. Here you tell him; through the piece of eden, you've been brought to the future. You did many great things in your time. But now the world is ending, and we need your help.
You can tell him one of two things, that the assassins, under corrupt and misguided leadership, are mistakenly preventing the world from being saved. We have tried and cannot correct them. The only option is to demoralize them and kill their leaders, to keep them out of the way long enough to ensure the world is safe. Seeing you fight against them can help make them realize they need to change tactic and focus more on saving the world than fighting the templars.
The other, is that abstergo is run by assassins, and their enemy is the templars. It has been nearly a thousand years, surely you can expect the respective groups might look different in this modern day. This is a much harder sell; you can't tell him of the web of control abstergo has, you have to tightly control who he talks to, and you have to preemptively convince him the "templars" will try to lie to him because they are afraid of him.
Of course, Abstergo has put a lot of development into controlling and manipulating people with and without the use of a piece of eden. Altaïr is immune to the Apple, not drugs or really aggressive subliminal or whatever other tactics abstergo uses.
Either way, you get this: a major figure to the assassins, reappeared in the modern day, pointed directly at the assassins to obliterate any single person in his way. An absolute fucking nightmare to stand up to. Believing that the modern assassins are wrong.
And the assassins have to contend with this. Fight him off. Decide if they want to capture or kill him. Realize they might be able to do this with other figures, like ezio. In short: a fucking nightmare.

Urban Shamanism: Ancient Wisdom in a Modern World
Tumblr media
In the heart of the concrete jungle, amidst the hustle and bustle of city life, an ancient practice is quietly re-emerging--Urban Shamanism. Traditionally, shamanism has been associated with indigenous cultures, remote landscapes, and deep connection to nature. But as the world evolves and urbanization dominates, the call of the shamanic path has found a new home within cities, offering seekers a way to integrate ancient wisdom into their fast-paced, modern lives.
What is Urban Shamanism?
Urban Shamanism is the adaptation of traditional shamanic practices to the context of city life. It involves working with spirit, energy, and nature in an environment where forests are replaced by skyscrapers and rivers by bustling streets. Despite the challenges of modern living, Urban Shamanism offers a means to cultivate spiritual awareness, heal, and navigate life with deeper wisdom and intuition.
At its core, shamanism is about accessing altered states of consciousness to receive guidance, healing, and knowledge. This can be achieved through meditation, drumming, dance, breathwork, and connecting with spirit guides or ancestors. In urban settings, shamanic practitioners learn to find nature within the chaos, drawing energy from parks, rivers, the sky, and even the hum of city life itself.
The Need for Urban Shamanism
Many people today feel disconnected from nature, themselves, and their spiritual essence. The demands of modern life--career pressures, technology overload, and constant distractions--can lead to stress, anxiety, and a lack of fulfillment. Urban Shamanism serves as a bridge between the ancient and the contemporary, helping individuals reconnect with their inner selves, the energies around them, and the unseen forces of the universe.
Moreover, cities, despite their artificial appearance, are alive with energy. Every street has its own rhythm, every building carries history, and every person contributes to a dynamic flow of energy. By engaging with these unseen aspects, urban shamans can harmonize their surroundings and develop a heightened awareness of their place within the greater web of life.
Practices of the Urban Shaman
Sacred Spaces in the City
One of the first steps in Urban Shamanism is creating or discovering sacred spaces within the city. This can be a small altar in one's home, a quiet corner in a park, a rooftop with a view of the sky, or even a favorite cafe where one feels at peace. These spaces serve as sanctuaries for reflection, meditation, and ritual.
2. Nature Connection
Even in the busiest cities, nature persists. Urban shamans cultivate relationships with trees in parks, birds on balconies, rivers flowing beneath bridges, and even the wind that weaves through the streets. Simple acts like walking barefoot on the grass, touching a tree with intention, or listening to the sounds of the city with mindfulness can strengthen this connection.
3. Shamanic Journeying
Shamanic journeying is a key practice that involves entering a trance-like state to explore spiritual realms, meet guides, and gain wisdom. Drumming, chanting, or using rhythmic breathing can facilitate this process. In an urban setting, soundscapes such as the rhythm of subway trains, the pulse of city life, or even recorded drumming can assist in reaching altered states.
4. Energetic Cleansing
Cities are filled with intense energies from people, technology, and emotions. Urban shamans practice energy cleansing techniques such as smudging with sage or palo santo, using sound (bells, singing bowls, clapping), or visualizing white light surrounding them. These practices help clear negativity and maintain spiritual balance.
5. Dreamwork and Symbolism
Urban Shamans pay close attention to their dreams and the symbolism in their daily lives. A chance encounter, a repeated number pattern, or an unexpected event may hold deep meaning. By developing a heightened sense of awareness, they begin to navigate life with greater insight and intuition.
6. Healing and Service to the Community
Traditionally, shamans are healers and guides. In the urban context, this can manifest as energy healing, intuitive counseling, community work, or even artistic expression. Urban shamans often feel called to help others--whether through Reiki, sound healing, activism, or creating safe spaces for spiritual exploration.
Challenges and Misconceptions
Urban Shamanism is not without its challenges. One major hurdle is skepticism, as mainstream society often dismisses shamanic practices as superstition. Additionally, finding time for spiritual practices amidst the demands of city life can be difficult. However, by weaving shamanic consciousness into daily routines--through mindfulness, intention, and small rituals--urban dwellers can integrate this path seamlessly.
There is also the issue of cultural appropriation. Many shamanic traditions come from indigenous cultures with rich histories and sacred practices. It is crucial for those drawn to Urban Shamanism to approach it with respect, study the traditions they draw from, and give back to the communities that have preserved these teachings.
The Future of Urban Shamanism
As more people seek meaning beyond material success, Urban Shamanism continues to gain traction. It provides a way for city dwellers to access deep spiritual truths without having to abandon their lives and move to the wilderness. With the rise of online communities, workshops, and books dedicated to modern shamanic practices, it is easier than ever to learn and share these wisdom traditions.
Ultimately, Urban Shamanism is about finding the sacred in the everyday, recognizing that the divine is not confined to remote landscapes but exists in the very fabric of our cities. It teaches that even amidst the noise and speed of modern life, one can walk the shamanic path, heal, grow, and serve as a bridge between worlds.
For those willing to look beyond the concrete and into the unseen, the ancient call of the shaman is still alive--whispering through the wind, glowing in the neon lights, and beating in the heart of the city itself.

Let me tell you about my special interest and favourite radio show BBC Radio 4's The Archers!!!! Please imbue the below with a tone of extreme glee:
BBC Radio 4's The Archers is a radio soap opera set in the fictional farming village of Ambridge. It was created in 1951 as an effort to get more farming listeners and to get more general audiences interested in farming due to the shortage of skilled farmers after ww2. The BBC tested out a variety of more dry farming programmes that failed to gain listenership, so they went to a farming conference and asked "hey what do you guys actually want from a radio show?"
And the consensus was that they wanted "a farming Dick Barton". Dick Barton was a spy drama which was half thriller and half domestic drama¹. While a farming spy thriller sounds very funny, they opted to instead make The Archers half domestic drama, half facts/debates about farming. Also they pilfered most of the writing team from Dick Barton lol.
The Archers initially had a very strong focus on the Archer family, and its cast broadened over time to now be a very wide ensemble. It is released in 15 minute segments per day, and as an omnibus² on Sundays. It is set in "the present", and always has been, so developments are happening in, kind of, real time. This means that there's a (now elderly) character who was in The Archers as a young woman is still present and the UK public has heard every part of her life, and her family's lives. There is a crazy web of dramas that is carefully recorded at the BBC and referenced as life events. For example, Nickie³ is a young mother who died of sepsis (rip) and recorded a message for her 3 year old child to listen to when he's 21. This message was then given to him literally 18 years later. Of real time. Listeners are very frequently life-long Archer fans, so there are people who heard both instances of this 18 years apart⁴. Isn't that cool!! They're keeping track of all the minutiae of a small village life from birthdays to anniversaries to that memorable stupid night out they had in their teens that their friends and family still reference to tease them. All for the sake of realism. And it works!
When The Archers was first airing, for quite a few years the cast and bbc offices frequently got post offering direct advice to the characters from members of the public who believed they were real people (or, were having fun doing some fiction writing). One very concerned letter writer offered one of the Archers come and stay at their house during a contentious unplanned pregnancy. For some of that time the cast were asked/encouraged to write back in character, but (thankfully) that practice has now stopped. Parasocial relationships have always been a thing lol.
The Archers has never been afraid to tackle big social issues. It was the first UK soap opera to have a gay wedding (with a civil partnership between Adam⁵ and Ian - contentious both due to gayness⁶ AND the class divide between them). It had a very well known and (unintentionally) well timed story about coercive control in abusive relationships with Helen Archer and her HORRIBLE ex (and now deceased haha fuck you) husband Rob which came to a head at the time the laws around coersive control were changing, so it became a central figure in explaining what this kind of abuse looks like, what it means, and how it affects people⁷. It had another big storyline about modern slavery in the UK, one about workplace bullying (very well done bc it was inflicted on Tracey whom everyone adores. And by everyone I mean. Me. I adores her. Let's go Horrobin-nation.), one really very affecting one at the moment about reconnecting with biological family very late in life, and the feelings that can bring up, and the fostering system of the 60s/70s. There was a really masterful and fairly subtle scene, after some of the Grundy family going "why in the world has our beloved George started going down the alt right misogyny pipeline when he's so surrounded by strong women??" and then it cut between the three Grundy households and in every single one of them the men waited around for the woman of the house to start making dinner and complained about it⁸.
All this might make The Archers sound like a long slew of trauma each week, but! There are always multiple ongoing storylines and SO MANY of them are comedy plots. You only get maybe 2-4 minutes of tragic stuff and then you cut away to such antics as "Linda Snell MBE is trying to put on a pantomime to her very very high artistic standards in one week while being actively sabotaged by a guy who hates pantomimes", "we were going to just have a small christmas as young flatmates but our parents all guilted us into an invite. And also the old woman who lives across the street.", "Hilda is a devil cat from Hell but someone from the family HAS to take her bc the elderly matriarch is going into an assisted living facility", "Stick in the mud, upper class The Prof. has a lodger of the rowdy laddish scottsman who wants to let his pet tarantula out to play" (the prof and jazza's relationship becomes one of the most touching and profound ones on the whole show btw). Every year there is a timetable of big village events (because, again, it's in real time!) that the audience gets to look forward to along with the characters because there's ALWAYS drama. Last year the village fête had a hostile takeover because Ed Grundy wanted to use it as aggressive marketing for his ferret business. Last year's Flower and Produce Show had an upset because a series of farcical events led to a table of pies getting destroyed, with only one remaining as the defacto victor¹⁰. And that's just from last year. Competition runs deep in this village.
As with any media I love, The Archers has its problems. It very much told from a white British normie perspective. It is set in a small rural village, so, statistically it is accurate to have it be 99% white, but it comes off as deeply self-conscious when there are non-white characters because (as an audio medium) it feels it has to clunkily find a way to say or remind the audience THIS CHARACTER IS BLACK or THIS CHARACTER IS ASIAN. I feel this doesn't efficiently utilise the strengths of an audio medium to be diverse - I had fully been picturing Welsh Natasha as south-asian bc she reminded me of a friend of mine until they introduced Ardil Shah and suddenly people were saying to him on first meeting "ah the vicar's wife is muslim..." and (really bad) "when I was a teenager I did a hate crime against an indian guy and I feel really bad about it" (??? is it Ahdil's job to absolve you???? Why put him in this position - and not interrogate in the show why it is weird to put him in this positon). Maybe they're concerned about the general public not clueing in to the fact that they're not all white if it's not spelled out very loudly in their first appearance, and they do then subsequently get storylines that aren't about race. It is true for small English villages that people will be Noticed for their ethnicity.
But Ambridge isn't a real village, it is an idealised one. If someone is really struggling to find housing, eventually the Ambridge Fairy (not a real character, just a fan term) will come along and oh look, conveniently an affordable living situation has opened up¹¹. Chelsea¹² gets an abortion and this is outed to the whole village, and there's only one or two people judging her harshly for it who eventually come around and apologise. Everyone rallies around making the Big Event go off despite the hitches! And I think more of that Ambridge acceptance and normalisation that it employs with those storylines should be extended to characters of colour. The general acceptance of south asian people in the UK increased from seeing - someone. I don't know her name I'm not a bake off head - just be happy and baking and a normal person. They could do this with the Archers, as they have already done with gay characters. Although, credit where it's due, I do believe they are doing just that with the rest of the Shah family and with Gay Paul's family.
Anyway. A big thing I love about The Archers is the intergenerational aspect of listening. Most people are introduced to it via family members (because the relationships and history are fairly complicated, it's hard to just dive in on an episode, and there's not really an obvious "start here, new listeners" place bc it's year-round, there aren't new serieses. Also as a new listener it can be hard to discern whose voice is whose and who is related to whom so sometimes you're going "are they flirting or are they cousins...? Who are they talking about...?" lmao). If you are talking to pretty much any old person in the UK, there's maybe a 70% chance they listen to or used to listen to The Archers, and can give exciting (to me) facts about characters previous storlines that I had no idea about bc to me they are "The Grandma" but to them they are "one third of a heated love triangle between two sisters and a guy, and a battle for parental approval that the other one definitively WON by dying young in a barn fire, and that pattern of child favoritism carried on through to her parenting". I am always discussing what's going on in the Archers with my parents (who also listen) and my book club (who don't).
If you want to learn more about The Archers. Listen to it if you can (it's on BBC Sounds, and on Itunes, idk how accessible it is outside the UK...). I know I said it's hard to get into but give it like 4 omnibus episodes and you'll have heard at least one complete short storyline and 4 in-episode short ones and you'll have gotten to know whoever is in those episodes. The history of their characters is an added bonus, not a requirement, and if it's important to the episode someone will say the relevant details to someone else bc they're all incurable gossips ❤️. And! You can read Flapjacks and Feudalism: Social Mobilty and Class in The Archers ed.s Cara Courage and Nicola Headlam (a book of essays on sociology through the lens of the archers. and the others in the essay book series, Flapjacks is just my favourite.) I also recommend Life on Air: A History of BBC Radio 4 by David Hendy, which only briefly and occasionally discusses The Archers but it always excites me when it does. Apparently someone was so pissed that The Archers timeslot was moved and nailed a dead fish and threatening letter to the comptroller's office door (relatable). There's also an Archers reaction podcast, TumTeeTum (named after singing along to the instrumental theme tune, although I personally go Bah bah duh bah duh bah dahhhh), a poisonous facebook group where people post the worst takes known to man and a new accompanying podcast where they interview the actors. I can't speak to the general quality of those 3 because I don't participate in them at all. My knowledge of the facebook group is from perusing it for research purposes and my general knowledge of facebook open communities. And! you can also type bbc radio 4's the archers into a search engine of your choice!!
¹when Dick Barton was being recast as Dick Barton the first actor was retiring, they did an open call for audition tapes and got one from an 8 year old who stated his qualification for the role as "I can shout really loudly". He did not get the part.
²all the segments collected together into one episode. This is how I listen.
³I actually might spell some names wrong bc. It's a radio show. Lol.
⁴not me, I only started properly listening about 6 years ago
⁵the guy who plays Adam is also voice actor for Raphael Balder's Gate 3. Reportedly also a pretty gay role lol.
⁶the current main cast Queer Ambridge Contingent are: Adam and Ian (long term married, have a little baby Xander through surrogacy, had a memorable small argument recently about how Ian is still kind of afraid to hold Adam's hand or kiss him in public even though it's Okay To Be Gay); Stella (CLOCKED her when she named her whippet "Weaver" after the woman in Alien. LESBIAN.) and her girlfriend Pip Archer (unlabelledly queer, has a little daughter Rosey who is Obsessed with Stella lmao); Rúairi (bisexual, was in a problematic sugar baby relationship with a much older woman LOL); Gay Paul the vet nurse (I am the one calling him Gay Paul no one in the show is. I call him Gay Paul because he has Gay Kevin from Riverdale energy (positive). He immediately befriended absolute Ambridge LEGEND Linda Snell MBE and had a rocky relationship with a guy who tried to strongarm him into an open relationship which Gay Paul did not want.); And I have my suspicions about newcomer Zainab. What with her not noticing/caring if teenage boys are interested in her but being deeply upset when her and Chelsea had a falling out on valentines day. I'm on the lookout. Honorable mention, Lilly's made up study-buddy Millicent who her mum became certain she was secretly dating because she'd use "studying with Millicent" as an excuse to be away from home to in fact date her SIXTH FORM ENGLISH PROFESSOR (WE HATE RUSS IN THIS HOUSE!!!!!!).
⁷I will say, I personally really did not like how they brought Rob back into her life for a while as he was terminally ill. The Archers falls back on "outsider arch villain" a little too often, and I think showing an abuse survivor happy and settled and firmly moved on without her abuser being a major player in her life was a more responsible path than He Will Always Get Some Power Over You Until He Literally Dies. But I'm not an abuse survivor, maybe some people felt seen and understood by this. It was also just geberally unpleasant to listen to lol.
⁸also he was ??? Rewarded ??? For calling his mum a stupid slut to her face by being given a new bedroom. Which he only asked for to get revenge on his female superior at work (who was renting the place his dad owned) for doing her job and telling him how to look after the pigs safely.
⁹shoes horses and suchlike
¹⁰ there is a recipie for the winning pie somewhere on the Internet, which my parents' friend who is MORE into the archers than me has reportedly made at least twice
¹¹ something interesting in how the archers is written is that there are class based catagories that are necessarily perpetuated for archetypal storytelling. The Aldridges are moneyed, upper class snobs. The Archers are middle class (they do frequently worry about losing x thing with an especially bad year, but they're land and business owners and run artisanal cheese courses). The Grundys are working class. They work at the tea rooms and pubs and farms that the Archers and Aldridges (and others) own. These strata include other families and intermingle - Jennifer Archer became Jenny Aldridge, for example. But the dynamic of upper middle working class has been preserved through every generation of The Archers (initially VERY insulting towards the bowing and scraping working class labourers, now the Grundys, Carters and Horrobins are arguably more the main characters than The Archers. But as the financial divide irl gets steeper between a Grundy and an Aldridge, it gets less and less easy to dismiss this Ambridge Fairy "it will be okay just keep working". The characters themselves have spoken about this to each other - Clarrie despaired that she and Eddie have been working multiple jobs their entire adult lives to make ends meet and might have to work until the grave. Every windfall they get to shore them up is eventually taken away from them or used up by the needs of living. But The Archers NEEDS to have good old salt of the earth types who aren't too depressed to move to be able to continue the age old comedy of stuffy stiff upper lip rich folk vs cheerful and honest poor folk that it's always engaged in. All this isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is interesting.
¹² we LOVE chelsea in this house!!!!

✧˖*°࿐Culture Dive
*ೃ༄Philosophical Principles
༊ Harmony with Nature: tsayiri hold a deep belief in living in harmony with the natural world. their existence is seen as interconnected with the earth, plants, animals, and elements. they strive to maintain a balanced relationship with all aspects of nature, respecting its power and beauty.
༊ Preservation of Ancient Knowledge: tsayiri see themselves as the keepers of timeless wisdom. their culture highly values the preservation of ancient teachings, not just in the form of written texts but through oral history, spiritual practices, and energy-based rituals passed down through generations.
༊ Collective Survival: the Tsayiri believe in the necessity of working together to ensure the survival of their people. while personal growth is important, the survival of the clan and the collective well-being always comes first. their survival depends on mutual support, cooperation, and shared wisdom.
༊ Respect for Individual Paths: though their culture values collective survival, Tsayiri also respect the personal paths each individual takes. every Tsayiri is seen as contributing to the whole, with their unique gifts and experiences playing a role in the greater narrative of their people.
༊ Balance Between Tradition and Adaptation: tsayiri culture emphasizes adapting to the changing world while maintaining respect for ancient practices. this delicate balance ensures that they are not bound by the past, but instead evolve in a way that preserves the essence of their heritage.
*ೃ༄Core Cultural Values
༊ Secrecy: the Tsayiri place high value on discretion and secrecy, especially concerning their powers and cultural practices. their hidden nature allows them to navigate the modern world without revealing their true capabilities.
༊ Community Protection: the safety and protection of the community are sacred to the Tsayiri. they are deeply committed to ensuring that their people remain safe from external threats and internal discord, often forming tight-knit alliances and support systems.
༊ Generational Wisdom: wisdom is passed down from one generation to the next, not just through formal education but also through lived experiences. elders are revered for their accumulated knowledge and guidance.
༊ Elemental Connection: the Tsayiri’s spiritual and physical existence is deeply connected to the elements—earth, water, air, fire, and spirit. they use these elemental forces for healing, power manipulation, and communication, maintaining a symbiotic relationship with them.
༊ Personal Growth: personal growth is a lifelong pursuit for the Tsayiri, intertwined with their responsibility to their people. every individual is expected to grow, evolve, and learn throughout their life, continually contributing to the community while also embracing personal development.
༊ Respecting Individual Journeys: while the collective is central, Tsayiri honor each person’s unique journey, understanding that every individual’s growth and choices enrich the broader culture. individual paths are recognized as essential to the overall well-being of the clan.
✧˖*°࿐Philosophical Foundations
*ೃ༄Metaphysical Worldview
༊ Cyclical Universe Understanding: the Tsayiri view the universe as a cyclical entity, where life, death, and rebirth are part of a constant, eternal flow. they believe that all beings experience cycles of existence and that every life and death contributes to the ongoing balance of the cosmos. this cyclical understanding encourages respect for the natural processes of life, death, and renewal.
༊ Belief in Interconnected Energy Systems: all life and elements are interconnected through a vast, intricate web of energy. every being, whether human, elemental, or spiritual, is part of a greater whole. this interconnectedness means that the actions of one individual or clan can have ripple effects throughout the universe. the Tsayiri strive to live in a way that supports and nurtures these connections, understanding that their energies affect the world around them.
༊ Concept of Collective Consciousness: the Tsayiri believe in a shared consciousness that transcends the individual. while each person has their own experiences and thoughts, they are all linked to a collective memory and understanding that is passed down through generations. this collective consciousness allows the Tsayiri to draw upon the wisdom and knowledge of their ancestors and can guide them in times of personal or collective struggle.
༊ Elemental Balance as Cosmic Principle: the elements—earth, air, fire, water, and spirit—are seen as fundamental forces that govern the universe. the Tsayiri believe that balance among these elements is necessary for harmony in the world and that each individual, clan, and community must work to maintain equilibrium between these forces. disruption in one element can have profound consequences on the entire universe.
༊ Reincarnation Through Ancestral Energy Lines: the Tsayiri hold the belief that when an individual dies, their soul is reborn through the energy lines of their ancestors. this reincarnation is not merely a physical rebirth but a spiritual continuation, where the energies of the ancestors flow into the next generation. this creates a deep connection between the living and the deceased, as well as a sense of responsibility to honor one's ancestors and carry forward their wisdom.
*ೃ༄Existential Principles
༊ Individual Growth Within Collective Context: while the Tsayiri emphasize personal development and mastery of one's powers, this growth is always viewed in relation to the larger community. individual progress is not an isolated journey but a contribution to the collective strength and wisdom of the society. one’s personal achievements are seen as tools to benefit all, and personal success is measured by how it serves the greater good.
༊ Responsibility to Preserve Knowledge: knowledge, both practical and spiritual, is sacred within Tsayiri culture. each member of the society is responsible for preserving and passing down this knowledge. elders, historians, and lore keepers hold the task of recording and transmitting history, rituals, and teachings to future generations, ensuring that the collective wisdom is not lost.
༊ Harmony Between Personal and Community Needs: the Tsayiri believe that true fulfillment is found when personal desires are balanced with the needs of the community. Individuals are encouraged to align their actions with the well-being of the collective, ensuring that personal growth does not come at the expense of the group's harmony and survival. this creates a society that values interdependence over individualism.
༊ Continuous Learning Across Centuries: the Tsayiri approach life as a constant learning process. from the youngest to the oldest, they believe in the importance of ongoing education, spiritual growth, and the refinement of their skills. this continuous learning is not only for practical knowledge but also for understanding deeper philosophical and spiritual truths about the universe and their place within it.
༊ Adaptability as Spiritual Practice: the Tsayiri understand that change is inevitable and that spiritual growth requires flexibility. as the world and the universe shift, they strive to adapt and evolve while maintaining their core principles. adaptability is seen as a key spiritual practice, with the ability to change and adjust being a sign of strength and wisdom. those who can adapt to new challenges and environments are highly respected.
✧˖*°࿐Social Interactions
*ೃ༄Community Engagement
༊ Tight-Knit Clan Structures: tsayiri communities are based on tight familial and clan bonds, often living in multi-generational households or communities that prioritize collective welfare over individualism.
༊ Intergenerational Relationships: respect for elders is paramount in Tsayiri society. elders are not only revered but are also seen as the ultimate repositories of wisdom. younger generations are raised under their guidance, learning everything from elemental magic to survival strategies.
༊ Mentorship as Primary Education Model: instead of traditional schooling, Tsayiri places emphasis on mentorship. older members of the clan teach the younger ones through direct experience and shared knowledge, fostering a deep sense of respect and understanding between generations.
༊ Collective Decision-Making: tsayiri make decisions through collective processes, often in councils or gatherings where everyone’s voice is heard. this ensures that decisions reflect the values and needs of the community, rather than the desires of a single leader.
༊ Shared Resource Management: resources, such as food, water, and energy, are shared among the clan, and communal ownership is emphasized. each member has a responsibility to the greater good, and resources are distributed based on need rather than personal wealth.
*ೃ༄Relationship Approaches
༊ Long-Term Perspective Due to Longevity: tsayiri live for extended periods, often centuries. their relationships reflect this, as they engage in long-term partnerships that evolve and shift over time. longevity allows them to form deep, meaningful bonds that transcend human lifespans.
༊ Multiple Partnerships Accepted: tsayiri culture is fluid in terms of partnerships and romantic relationships. while deep emotional bonds are cherished, multiple partnerships are seen as acceptable, with no stigmas attached, provided all parties involved are respectful and consenting.
༊ Grief Support for Human Partner Loss: when a Tsayiri loses a human partner, they experience grief intensely. the Tsayiri provide strong emotional and spiritual support for one another during these times, ensuring that those who mourn can heal without feeling isolated.
༊ Careful Human Relationship Management: due to the disparity in lifespans between Tsayiri and humans, relationships with human partners are carefully managed. tsayiri often form connections with humans in ways that acknowledge the inevitable nature of death for their mortal partners.
༊ Emotional Intelligence Prioritized: emotional intelligence is a core skill that is cultivated from an early age. tsayiri are taught to understand and regulate their emotions, helping them navigate complex social dynamics and form strong interpersonal relationships
✧˖*°࿐Social Structure
*ೃ༄Relationship Dynamics
༊ Multi-generational Family Units: families consist of multiple generations living together, with younger members learning from the elders. this structure creates a strong sense of intergenerational unity, where the wisdom of the elderly is shared and respected by younger members.
༊ Fluid Partnership Concepts: the Tsayiri adopt a flexible view of relationships and partnerships, allowing for diverse family structures and evolving bonds. emotional connections are prioritized over traditional, fixed relationship models. partnerships may shift based on growth, circumstances, and needs, with love and respect being central to maintaining bonds.
༊ Emotional Intelligence as Primary Social Skill: emotional understanding and empathy are seen as essential for fostering healthy relationships within families and communities. people who can navigate complex emotional dynamics and communicate effectively are highly valued.
༊ Collective Child-Rearing Practices: children are raised by the community, not just individual parents. this collective approach ensures that every child receives the guidance and support of various adults, from skilled warriors to teachers to healers, fostering a diverse set of skills and values in the younger generation.
༊ Generational Wisdom Transmission: elders play a critical role in passing down knowledge, not just through formal education, but through storytelling, apprenticeships, and mentoring. they act as living libraries, with their wisdom guiding the direction of the community, especially in moments of change or crisis.
*ೃ༄Social Hierarchy
༊ Merit-Based Leadership: leadership within the Tsayiri is determined by the skills, accomplishments, and contributions of individuals, rather than birthright or tradition. those who demonstrate the greatest wisdom, combat prowess, or contribution to society are elevated to positions of power.
༊ Age Respected, Not Automatically Privileged: while age brings respect, it is not automatically linked to power. younger individuals can ascend to leadership roles if they prove themselves capable, creating an environment where merit and skill are the deciding factors, not just age or seniority.
༊ Skill and Wisdom Determine Status: the social standing of an individual is based on their mastery of their elemental abilities, their role within the community, and the respect they earn through their actions. warriors, healers, teachers, and leaders are judged by their effectiveness and wisdom, rather than by traditional status markers.
༊ Regular Leadership Rotation: to prevent stagnation and ensure fairness, leadership roles, especially in local governance and larger councils, are rotated regularly. this system helps prevent the consolidation of power and ensures a diversity of leadership styles and perspectives.
༊ Transparent Decision-Making Processes: all major decisions affecting the community are made openly, with input from various members of society. leaders seek consensus and openly communicate the reasoning behind their choices, fostering trust and collective involvement in the decision-making process.
✧˖*°࿐Spiritual and Historical Beliefs
*ೃ༄Mythological Origins
༊ Descendants of Fallen Gods: tsayiri believe they are descendants of fallen gods who once lived among mortals. this divine ancestry is central to their identity and is celebrated through various ceremonies and stories that connect them to their celestial origins.
༊ Each Clan Linked to a Specific Divine Ancestor: every Tsayiri clan traces its origins back to a specific god or celestial being. these ancestral figures are revered, and their stories are passed down through generations, often forming the basis of clan identity.
༊ Preservation of Origin Stories: the origins of the Tsayiri people are preserved through intricate rituals, songs, and stories that recount their divine heritage and the events that led to their existence. these stories are shared during key cultural celebrations.
༊ Periodic Ritual Remembrances: periodic ceremonies are held to honor the fallen gods and ancestors, where Tsayiri reconnect with their origins. these rituals often involve offerings, prayers, and dances to invoke the blessings of their divine lineage.
༊ Ancestral Connection Ceremonies: tsayiri regularly perform rituals to communicate with their ancestors, seeking guidance, blessings, or protection. these ceremonies help them maintain a connection with the spiritual realm and reinforce their sense of unity.
*ೃ༄Spiritual Practices
༊ Nature-Based Ceremonies: tsayiri spiritual practices are rooted in nature, involving ceremonies that honor the earth, elements, and celestial forces. these ceremonies align them with natural cycles, such as the changing of the seasons, solstices, and equinoxes.
༊ Elemental Connection Rituals: rituals are held to strengthen the Tsayiri’s connection to the elements. whether calling on the power of fire for transformation or water for purification, these rituals help them attune their spirits to the natural forces around them.
༊ Ancestor Communication Practices: communing with ancestors is a deeply spiritual act for the Tsayiri. this may involve meditation, astral projection, or the use of sacred artifacts to channel ancestral wisdom.
༊ Seasonal Gathering Celebrations: seasonal celebrations are significant in Tsayiri culture, marking the changing of seasons with communal feasts, dances, and rituals. these gatherings renew the spiritual energy of the community and reaffirm their connection to nature.
༊ Energy/Power Renewal Traditions: tsayiri frequently engage in energy renewal practices, whether through fasting, meditation, or communal rituals designed to restore physical and spiritual energy. these practices help maintain their power and keep them connected to the elemental forces.
✧˖*°࿐Spiritual
*ೃ༄Ceremonial Traditions

Unnecessarily compiling sensitive information can be as damaging as actively trying to steal it. For example, the Cybernews research team discovered a plethora of supermassive datasets, housing billions upon billions of login credentials. From social media and corporate platforms to VPNs and developer portals, no stone was left unturned.
Our team has been closely monitoring the web since the beginning of the year. So far, they’ve discovered 30 exposed datasets containing from tens of millions to over 3.5 billion records each. In total, the researchers uncovered an unimaginable 16 billion records.
None of the exposed datasets were reported previously, bar one: in late May, Wired magazine reported a security researcher discovering a “mysterious database” with 184 million records. It barely scratches the top 20 of what the team discovered. Most worryingly, researchers claim new massive datasets emerge every few weeks, signaling how prevalent infostealer malware truly is.
“This is not just a leak – it’s a blueprint for mass exploitation. With over 16 billion login records exposed, cybercriminals now have unprecedented access to personal credentials that can be used for account takeover, identity theft, and highly targeted phishing. What’s especially concerning is the structure and recency of these datasets – these aren’t just old breaches being recycled. This is fresh, weaponizable intelligence at scale,” researchers said.
The only silver lining here is that all of the datasets were exposed only briefly: long enough for researchers to uncover them, but not long enough to find who was controlling vast amounts of data. Most of the datasets were temporarily accessible through unsecured Elasticsearch or object storage instances.
What do the billions of exposed records contain?
Researchers claim that most of the data in the leaked datasets is a mix of details from stealer malware, credential stuffing sets, and repackaged leaks.
There was no way to effectively compare the data between different datasets, but it’s safe to say overlapping records are definitely present. In other words, it’s impossible to tell how many people or accounts were actually exposed.
However, the information that the team managed to gather revealed that most of the information followed a clear structure: URL, followed by login details and a password. Most modern infostealers – malicious software stealing sensitive information – collect data in exactly this way.
Information in the leaked datasets opens the doors to pretty much any online service imaginable, from Apple, Facebook, and Google, to GitHub, Telegram, and various government services. It’s hard to miss something when 16 billion records are on the table.
According to the researchers, credential leaks at this scale are fuel for phishing campaigns, account takeovers, ransomware intrusions, and business email compromise (BEC) attacks.
“The inclusion of both old and recent infostealer logs – often with tokens, cookies, and metadata – makes this data particularly dangerous for organizations lacking multi-factor authentication or credential hygiene practices,” the team said.
What dataset exposed billions of credentials?
The datasets that the team uncovered differ widely. For example, the smallest, named after malicious software, had over 16 million records. Meanwhile, the largest one, most likely related to the Portuguese-speaking population, had over 3.5 billion records. On average, one dataset with exposed credentials had 550 million records.
Some of the datasets were named generically, such as “logins,” “credentials,” and similar terms, preventing the team from getting a better understanding of what’s inside. Others, however, hinted at the services they’re related to.
For example, one dataset with over 455 million records was named to indicate its origins in the Russian Federation. Another dataset, with over 60 million records, was named after Telegram, a cloud-based instant messaging platform.
“The inclusion of both old and recent infostealer logs – often with tokens, cookies, and metadata – makes this data particularly dangerous for organizations lacking multi-factor authentication or credential hygiene practices,”
While naming is not the best way to deduce where the data comes from, it seems some of the information relates to cloud services, business-oriented data, and even locked files. Some dataset names likely point to a form of malware that was used to collect the data.
It is unclear who owns the leaked data. While it could be security researchers that compile data to check and monitor data leaks, it’s virtually guaranteed that some of the leaked datasets were owned by cybercriminals. Cybercriminals love massive datasets as aggregated collections allow them to scale up various types of attacks, such as identity theft, phishing schemes, and unauthorized access.
A success rate of less than a percent can open doors to millions of individuals, who can be tricked into revealing more sensitive details, such as financial accounts. Worryingly, since it's unclear who owns the exposed datasets, there’s little impact users can do to protect themselves.
However, basic cyber hygiene is essential. Using a password manager to generate strong, unique passwords, and updating them regularly, can be the difference between a safe account and stolen details. Users should also review their systems for infostealers, to avoid losing their data to attackers.
No, Facebook, Google, and Apple passwords weren’t leaked. Or were they?
With a dataset containing 16 billion passwords, that’s equivalent to two leaked accounts for every person on the planet.
We don’t really know how many duplicate records there are, as the leak comes from multiple datasets. However, some reporting by other media outlets can be quite misleading. Some claim that Facebook, Google, and Apple credentials were leaked. While we can’t completely dismiss such claims, we feel this is somewhat inaccurate.
Bob Diachenko, a Cybernews contributor, cybersecurity researcher, and owner of SecurityDiscovery.com, is behind this recent major discovery.
16-billion-record data breach signals a shift in the underground world
According to Cybernews researcher Aras Nazarovas, this discovery might signal that criminals are abandoning previously popular methods of obtaining stolen data.
"The increased number of exposed infostealer datasets in the form of centralized, traditional databases, like the ones found be the Cybernews research team, may be a sign, that cybercriminals are actively shifting from previously popular alternatives such as Telegram groups, which were previously the go-to place for obtaining data collected by infostealer malware," Nazarovas said.
He regularly works with exposed datasets, ensuring that defenders secure them before threat actors can access them.
Here’s what Nazarovas suggests you should do to protect yourself.
"Some of the exposed datasets included information such as cookies and session tokens, which makes the mitigation of such exposure more difficult. These cookies can often be used to bypass 2FA methods, and not all services reset these cookies after changing the account password. Best bet in this case is to change your passwords, enable 2FA, if it is not yet enabled, closely monitor your accounts, and contact customer support if suspicious activity is detected."
Billions of records exposed online: recent leaks involve WeChat, Alipay
Major data leaks, with billions of exposed records, have become nearly ubiquitous. Last week, Cybernews wrote about what is likely the biggest data leak to ever hit China, billions of documents with financial data, WeChat and Alipay details, as well as other sensitive personal data.
Last summer, the largest password compilation with nearly ten billion unique passwords, RockYou2024, was leaked on a popular hacking forum. In 2021, a similar compilation with over 8 billion records was leaked online.
In early 2024, the Cybernews research team discovered what is likely still the largest data leak ever: the Mother of All Breaches (MOAB), with a mind-boggling 26 billion records.
16 billion passwords exposed: how to protect yourself
Huge datasets of passwords spill onto the dark web all the time, highlighting the need to change them regularly. This also demonstrates just how weak our passwords still are.
Last year, someone leaked the largest password compilation ever, with nearly ten billion unique passwords published online. Such leaks pose severe threats to people who are prone to reusing passwords.
Even if you think you are immune to this or other leaks, go and reset your passwords just in case.
Select strong, unique passwords that are not reused across multiple platforms
Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible
Closely monitor your accounts
Contact customer support in case of any suspicious activity

The rise of the European empires [...] required new forms of social organization, not least the exploitation of millions of people whose labor powered the growth of European expansion [...]. These workers suffered various forms of coercion ranging from outright slavery through to indentured or convict labor, as well as military conscription, land theft, and poverty. [...] [W]ide-ranging case studies [examining the period from 1600 to 1850] [...] show the variety of working conditions and environments found in the early modern period and the many ways workers found to subvert and escape from them. [...] A web of regulation and laws were constructed to control these workers [...]. This system of control was continually contested by the workers themselves [...]
---
Timothy Coates [...] focuses on three locations in the Portuguese empire and the workers who fled from them. The first was the sugar plantations of São Tomé in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The slaves who ran away to form free communities in the interior of the island were an important reason why sugar production eventually shifted to Brazil. Secondly, Coates describes working conditions in the trading posts around the Indian Ocean and the communities of runaways which formed in the Bay of Bengal. The final section focuses on convicts and sinners in Portugal itself, where many managed to escape from forced labor in salt mines.
Johan Heinsen examines convict labor in the Danish colony of Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Denmark awarded the Danish West Indies and Guinea Company the right to transport prisoners to the colony in 1672. The chapter illustrates the social dynamics of the short-lived colony by recounting the story of two convicts who hatched the escape plan, recruited others to the group, including two soldiers, and planned to steal a boat and escape from the island. The plan was discovered and the two convicts sentenced to death. One was forced to execute the other in order to save his own life. The two soldiers involved were also punished but managed to talk their way out of the fate of the convicts. Detailed court records are used to show both the collective nature of the plot and the methods the authorities used to divide and defeat the detainees.

James F. Dator reveals how workers in seventeenth-century St. Kitts Island took advantage of conflict between France and Britain to advance their own interests and plan collective escapes. The two rival powers had divided the island between them, but workers, indigenous people, and slaves cooperated across the borders, developing their own knowledge of geography, boundaries, and imperial rivalries [...].
Nicole Ulrich writes about the distinct traditions of mass desertions that evolved in the Dutch East India Company colony in South Africa. Court records reveal that soldiers, sailors, slaves, convicts, and servants all took part in individual and collective desertion attempts. [...] Mattias von Rossum also writes about the Dutch East India Company [...]. He [...] provides an overview of labor practices of the company [...] and the methods the company used to control and punish workers [...].

In the early nineteenth century, a total of 73,000 British convicts were sentenced to be transported to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania). There, the majority were rented out as laborers to private employers, and all were subjected to surveillance and detailed record keeping. These records allow Hamish Maxwell-Stewart and Michael Quinlan to provide a detailed statistical analysis of desertion rates in different parts of the colonial economy [...].
When Britain abolished the international slave trade, new forms of indentured labor were created in order to provide British capitalism with the labor it required. Anita Rupprecht investigates the very specific culture of resistance that developed on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands between 1808 and 1828. More than 1,300 Africans were rescued from slavery and sent to Tortola, where officials had to decide how to deal with them. Many were put to work in various forms of indentured labor on the island, and this led to resistance and rebellion. Rupprecht uncovers details about these protests from the documents of a royal commission that investigated [...].

Ancient Korean & Japanese Relations
Ancient East Asia was dominated by the three states known today as China, Japan, and Korea. These kingdoms traded raw materials and high-quality manufactured goods, exchanged cultural ideas and practices, and fought each other in equal measure throughout the centuries. The complex chain of successive kingdoms in all three states has created a rich web of events that historians have sometimes found difficult to disentangle; a situation not helped by modern nationalist claims and ideals superimposed on antiquity from all three parties. As the historian Kim Won-Yong put it, "Korea acted as a cultural bridge between China and Japan" (Portal, 20). Historians continue to discuss whether that bridge was one-way or two-way traffic and, if the former, which direction, but suffice to say that there was such a bridge, and its consequences in art, politics, and history in both countries still resonate today.
First Trade Relations
It is likely that there was contact between the Japanese islands and the Korean peninsula in the Neolithic period (6,000-1,000 BCE), especially considering the lower sea-level at that time and so closer geographical proximity of the two land masses. However, the first recorded ties between Japan, specifically the island of Kyushu, which the Koreans called Wae (and the Chinese Wa), occurred in the period known as the Proto-Three Kingdoms period between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE. The fragmented territories in the south of the peninsula were not yet centralised states, but international relations were developed by the Chinese commanderies which occupied the north of Korea at this time, especially Lelang. Envoys and tribute were sent by the Wa, now a confederation of small states in southern and western Japan, the most important of which was Yamato. These missions are recorded in 57, 107, 238, and 248 CE.

Music's Origins
Much of human history is silent. We have lost the exact sounds of anyone living prior to the invention of the phonograph in 1877. We have lost the sound of any music not written down or passed down prior to the advent of musical notation in approximately 1400 BCE.

Singing was most likely the first type of music, though why humans started singing isn't certain. What we can know from modern peoples that are preliterate is that that singing likely contained mimicry of sounds found in nature. It also likely would have been different in a cave compared to a valley compared to an open area because of the acoustics amplifying and distorting various sounds. It likely impacted all parts of life, from hunting to religious or shamanistic practices. The presence and location of the hyoid bone, a horseshoe shaped bone that anchors the tongue and other muscles at the base of the mouth, in Neanderthals going back at least 60,000 years ago, based on the oldest one we have found, was in the same place that our hyoid bone is, making it possible for them to make the same range of sounds we can, so there's a good chance they also made music similar to that of early modern humans. Some research also points to 'motherese', the higher pitched, simplified, and rhythmic way people talk to babies, may be a source of music, as well.

The oldest item that is unquestioningly a musical instrument is a bone flute that dates back to about 43,150-39,370 years ago. This is within the time frame that Neanderthals still were on the earth. There are hollow bones with deliberate holes in them that go back over 100,000 years ago. Research suggests that rhythmic instruments could have developed from stone working and the sounds of working, such as pounding seeds and roots, or as a way to keep people in tandem for work or dance, or as entertainment. There are also studies on tonal instruments made of rocks such as lithophones and ringing rocks and how they would resonate in various locations, including megalithic sites.

During the Old Kingdom of Egypt, from about 2700-2200 BCE, stringed instruments begin to show up in artwork with arched or bow harps in murals with single and double pipes. Percussion instruments, including cymbals, and lutes were added by the Middle Kingdom, 2040-1782 BCE.

The earliest writing of music is found in the cuneiform tablets of Sumer. Musical theory and instructions on composing and performing music have been found dating to 2000 BCE, though exact interpretations are varied. The oldest written music is from Ugarit from about 1400 BCE, which was a Hurrian hymn to Nikkal, a goddess who was the spouse of the moon god. The Hurrians lived north of the Akkadians and also used cuneiform script.
You can listen to the Hurrian Hymn here (15 years old recording) or here (by Peter Pringle, 4 years ago).
