The MSA-0011 S Gundam

The early success of Project Zeta led to many new and innovative mobile suit designs. The introduction of new materials, new mechanisms, new weapons technologies, and new design talent at Anaheim opened the door for the company to dominate the MS development sector into the mid 90s UC.

During this period, a number of machines based on Project Zeta would see deployment by factions all across Earth-sphere. many of these post-Zeta machines would come to be known as "Anaheim Gundams", and would be regarded as some of the most influential designs in the history of mobile suits.

Developed for the Earth Federation forces sometime in the late 80s UC, the MSA-0011 S Gundam, also called the Superior Gundam and Iota Gundam internally at Anaheim, is a bit less well-known than its other Project Zeta siblings.

The machine featured a modular design, made up of three high-performance aerospace craft which combined via a core block system to form the full mobile suit. These units were the FXA-08BG Core Fighter, the G-Bomber, and the G-Attacker.

Despite similarities to the MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam, the design teams for the two machines largely worked independently of one another.

The S Gundam featured some unique equipment for the time, including the Beam Smart Gun, a powerful rifle that connected directly to the machine's power plant. It was also one of the earliest adopters of INCOMs and the quasi-psycommu system. Quasi-psycommu technology allows non-Newtype pilots to make use of formerly Newtype-exclusive weapon systems.

The S Gundam also saw several upgrade plans. These plans included the MSA-0011 [BST] S Gundam Booster Unit Type, the MSA-0011 [Bst] S Gundam Booster Unit Plan 303E "Deep Striker" , and the MSA-0011 [Ext] Ex-S Gundam.

The MSA-0011 [BST] S Gundam Unit Type and the MSA-0011 [Ext] Ex-S Gundam are both upgrades applied to the original unit, but the "Deep Striker" equipment was never built. The "Deep Striker" does appear as a playable unit in the SD Gundam G Generation series of games.

The S Gundam would also be developed into the Nero, a mass-production variant taking cues from it and the Lambda Gundam. It was used as the mainstay MS of the Federation's Task Force Alpha.

While all of this is rather impressive, the most notable part of the machine was undeniably its greatest strength. The S Gundam was equipped with the Advanced Logistic and Inconsequence Cognizing Equipment system. "ALICE" - as she was better known - was an advanced artificial intelligence designed to replace a human pilot.

The following section contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Gundam Sentinel! If you are interested in reading it, I highly recommend you do so!

ALICE was developed by Anaheim scientists Dr. Carol and Dr. Roots to automate certain functions of mobile suits. While this was possible previously, commands had to be programmed into the MS via a command console. The final objective of the project was to fully automate a Gundam-type mobile suit using ALICE.

She was programmed to grow and learn by observing and analyzing the actions of pilots, and was treated like a daughter by Dr. Roots. This caused tensions with Dr. Carol and other factions at Anaheim. A suspected act of sabotage resulted in an explosion that nearly destroyed ALICE, but Dr. Roots gave her life protecting her. The project was shelved for a time.

ALICE was picked back up later, being installed in the S Gundam and paired with Ryou Roots under the Federation's Task Force Alpha. She, along with the S Gundam, saw action during the Pezun rebellion perpetrated by the New Desides faction. This faction of Titans remnants and loyalists sought to break away from the Federation to further their own interests.

During combat, Ryou's lack of skill resulted in multiple near-death experiences. ALICE was responsible for saving his life on multiple occasions.

Learning from Ryou and other Task Force Alpha pilots, ALICE eventually developed an awareness of the world. She would deduce that friends were the most important thing to a person, after initially failing to comprehend Ryou's grief at the death of his fellow pilots.

Following this logic, she would eventually sacrifice herself to save the lives of her comrades. Her final words were thanks to Ryou for the memories and lessons she learned from him.

She would be destroyed during atmospheric entry.

The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced in Oslo on Friday.

Mohammadi, 51, has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison, and has been banned from seeing her husband and children. Her name has become synonymous with the battle for human rights in Iran, where nationwide protests broke out last year following the death of Mahsa Amini. Amini was a 22-year-old woman who had been taken into custody by the regime’s notorious morality police.

In awarding the prize to Mohammadi, the Nobel Committee said it “recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who in the preceding year have demonstrated against the theocratic regimes’ policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women.”

“Her brave struggle has come with tremendous personal costs. Altogether, the regime has arrested her 13 times, convicted her five times, and sentenced her to a total of 31 years in prison, and 154 lashes,” Norwegian Nobel Committee chair Berit Reiss-Andersen said at the announcement ceremony.

“Ms. Mohammadi is still in prison as I speak,” Reiss-Andersen added.

Mohammadi said she will continue striving for “democracy, freedom, and equality” in a message shared with CNN by her family on Wednesday, to be released in case she won the prize.

It is not clear whether Mohammadi knows about her win. Her friends and family told CNN that those detained in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison are not allowed to receive calls on Thursdays and Fridays.

In the statement, Mohammadi said she would stay in Iran to continue her activism “even if I spend the rest of my life in prison.”

“Standing alongside the brave mothers of Iran, I will continue to fight against the relentless discrimination, tyranny, and gender-based oppression by the oppressive religious government until the liberation of women,” she said.

Taghi Rahmani, Mohammadi’s husband, told CNN that the prize is “for all the people of Iran.” Rahmani, a fellow activist and former political prisoner who served a total of 14 years in regime jails, lives in exile in France with their twin children.

“This prize is not just for Narges; it is for all the people of Iran. A movement in which Iranian women and men took to the streets, stood for months, and fought to show that they will continue to struggle for democracy and civil equality,” Rahmani said.

In a separate statement to CNN, Mohammadi’s family said: “Although the years of her absence can never be compensated for us, the reality is that the honor of recognizing Narges’ efforts for peace is a source of solace for our indescribable suffering. “It has been more than eight and a half years since she has seen her children, and she has not heard their voices for over a year. All of this signifies what she has endured on the path to realizing her aspirations. Therefore, for us, who know that the Nobel Peace Prize will aid her in achieving her goals, this day is a blessed day,” the family statement added.

Incarcerated, but not silenced

Despite being jailed, not even the dark cells of Tehran’s Evin Prison have crushed Mohammadi’s powerful voice.

In an audio recording from inside the jail, shared with CNN ahead of Friday’s announcement, Mohammadi, is heard leading the chants of “woman, life, freedom” – the slogan of the uprising sparked last year by Amini’s death. Amini was arrested for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly.

The recording is interrupted by a brief automated message – “This is a phone call from Evin Prison” – as the women are heard singing a Farsi rendition of “Bella Ciao,” the 19th-century Italian folk song that became a resistance anthem against fascism and has been adopted by Iran’s freedom movement.

“This period was and still is the era of greatest protest in this prison,” Mohammadi told CNN in written responses to questions submitted through intermediaries.

Mohammadi was one of 351 candidates for this year’s award – the second-highest number in the history of the Nobels. She became the 19th woman to win the award in more than 120 years of the prize.

Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Ukrainian human rights lawyers who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, commended the committee’s decision to honor Mohammadi.

“We live in a very interconnected world. Right now, people in Iran are fighting for freedom. Our future depends on their success,” Matviichuk posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

At Friday’s news conference announcing the award, Reiss-Andersen said: “Only by embracing equal rights for all can the world achieve the fraternity between nations that Alfred Nobel sought to promote,”

“The award to Narges Mohammadi follows a long tradition in which the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the Peace Prize to those working to advance social justice, human rights and democracy. These are important preconditions for lasting peace,” she added.

‘Woman, life, freedom’

Henrik Urdal, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo, described Mohammadi’s win as “a tremendous achievement for women’s rights in Iran.”

“Women in the country have been fighting for equality and freedom for generations, and the death of Mahsa Amini became a catalyst against oppression and violence,” Urdal said in a statement to CNN.

“Today’s laureate, unfairly jailed in Tehran, sends a powerful message to the leaders of Iran that women’s rights are fundamental everywhere in the world,” he said.

Mohammadi’s recognition comes after a year of huge upheaval in Iran, sparked by Amini’s death, which swelled into nationwide protests lasting months. Reiss-Andersen described the unrest as “the largest political demonstrations against Iran’s theocratic regime since it came to power in 1979.”

They were met by a brutal government crackdown. “More than 500 demonstrators were killed. Thousands were injured, including many who were blinded by rubber bullets fired by the police. At least 20,000 people were arrested and held in custody,” Reiss-Andersen said.

Last month marked the one-year anniversary of Amini’s death. Video obtained by CNN showed further demonstrations throughout multiple cities in Iran, including capital Tehran, Mashad, Ahvaz, Lahijan, Arak and the Kurdish city of Senandaj.

Many of the protesters shouted “Woman, Life, Freedom,” and others chanted slogans against Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The long road to the Nobel

Mohammadi, who studied for a degree in physics at Imam Khomeini International University in the 1990s, initially worked as an engineer, while writing columns for reformist Iranian newspapers, Berit Reiss-Andersen said at Friday’s news conference.

In 2003, she joined the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran, an organization founded by the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi.

Mohammadi was arrested for the first time in 2011 and convicted in part because of her membership of the Defenders of Human Rights Center. After being released on bail two years later, Mohammadi began to campaign against the use of the death penalty.

“Iran has long been among the countries that execute the highest proportion of their inhabitants annually,” the committee acknowledged. Since January last year, more than 860 prisoners have been punished by death in the country.

Mohammadi was arrested and sentenced again in 2015 for her activism against capital punishment. But her work continued from inside Evin, as she began to oppose human rights abuses committed against political prisoners.

CNN reported last year on how Iran’s security forces used rape to quell the protests that broke out after the death of Amini.

With media access inside Iran severely constrained, CNN went to the region near Iraq’s border with Iran, interviewing eyewitnesses who had left the country and verifying accounts from survivors and sources both in and outside Iran, to corroborate several reports of sexual violence against protesters.

One Kurdish-Iranian woman, whom CNN is calling Hana for her safety, says she both witnessed and suffered sexual violence while detained. “There were girls who were sexually assaulted and then transferred to other cities,” she said.

Iranian officials did not respond to CNN’s request for comment on the alleged abuses.

Since the anniversary of Amini’s death, Iran has continued its crackdown on women’s rights. Its parliament passed draconian new legislation in September, imposing much harsher penalties on women who breach hijab laws. The so-called “hijab bill,” which will be enacted for a three-year trial period, sets out various regulations around the wearing of clothing, which if violated can carry up to 10 years in prison.

UN experts said the new law could amount to “gender apartheid.”

“Authorities appear to be governing through systemic discrimination with the intention of suppressing women and girls into total submission,” the experts said in a statement.

Harry threw the keys onto the driver's seat before slamming the passenger door and patting her freshly-shorn head dry with her sleeves. She leant over the centre console and stuck the keys in the ignition, desperate to get the heating on. The car whinnied, once, twice, the engine turning over and over. Clearly the sparks weren’t sparking, or the plugs weren’t plugging, or whatever it was that sparkplugs did. She tried again, and the engine complained some more. Today of all days! Didn’t Stella (the car) know that it was her birthday? She slapped the steering wheel in frustration, accidentally sounding the horn and startling Louis, who was standing on the stoop. She was trying to lock the door but the fright had made her drop the keys. She picked them up and proceeded to lug her bags to the car, scowling and shaking her head. She shoved them in the boot, tried to close the door over the top of a stray luggage handle, tucked the handle in, and slammed it shut.

“There was no need to beep at me. I was standing right there,” she snapped, yanking open the driver’s side door.

Harry hauled her sore head back onto the passenger side and wedged it between the seat and the clammy window, pressing her throbbing temple against the glass. She covered her eyes to avoid looking at Louis and silently held out her hand for the travel cup of alka-seltzer Louis was holding. She took a big sip and tried to swallow it, but her stomach was having none of that. It pooled in her mouth, mixing viscously with saliva and the dregs of mouthwash. Using all her mental powers she managed to force it down her throat with a loud gulp, followed by a fairly putrid belch.

Louis sighed conspicuously. She hated the sound of people swallowing loudly, it gave her a crawling feeling on the back of her neck. Harry knew that, but what was she supposed to do? Spit it out into the empty bag of m&ms on the floor? 

Louis adjusted the seat and tried to start the car, to no avail. 

“We’re going to have to beg Terry for a jumpstart again…” Harry said in a hoarse voice, listening to the engine whine. Terry was their downstairs neighbour, a ‘confirmed bachelor’ in his late sixties, with whom they shared a portico, a watering can, and a cat named Beowulf. Louis ignored her and tried again.

“After I sicked up in his fucking… ornamental kumquat…” Harry continued. She peeked at Louis from between her fingers. “Did you clean it up, Lou? I forgot…”

“Yes I cleaned it up. Shush for a second.”

Harry sealed her lips and stole another glance at Louis. Her fingers were steepled in front of her face, her thumbs pressed against her lips, and she was breathing deeply in and out of her nose, her breath condensing in the cold air. Rodin might cast her in bronze and call her <em>Meditation on a 2008 Vauxhall Astra.<em> After another few tense seconds of this exercise, she blinked her eyes open, rubbed her hands together in a curiously apotropaic gesture, then turned the key in the ignition. The engine roared to life accompanied by various pings and dings emitting from the dashboard, alerting them to the numerous issues requiring a mechanic’s attention. Harry translated these automated tones as the whimsical murmurings of a sentient robot awoken from a nanna nap. In car years, Stella must be somewhere in the octogenarian region, and quite entitled to have a little trouble getting going in the mornings.

They waited in dispassionate silence for the engine to warm up. After a moment, Louis sighed quietly and opened the car door. “Left my coffee on the counter,” she said, climbing out. 

Harry peeked out of her hands again. “Can I have some?”

“I asked you if you wanted a coffee and you said no.” 

“Well I’d like one now.” 

“Fine.” Louis shut the car door in a manner that conveyed restrained frustration. Her footsteps on the gravel sounded stompy. 

Harry wound down the window and called softly through the falling rain. “Can you please get my beanie? It’s in the dryer.” 

Louis ignored her and let herself back into the house in her wet trainers, without even wiping them on the mat. Typical. Harry had just vacuumed and mopped yesterday morning in preparation for their weekend away so they could return to a clean house.

She sniffed and scratched her nose. It felt all puffy and swollen. She swivelled the rearview mirror to face her and regarded her red, bloodshot eyes, the creases on her forehead, the inflamed capillaries in the apples of her cheeks, her greasy widow’s peak. She looked like a sort of has-been skinhead one might find washed up in the dole queue on a Monday morning. There was a crusted string of drool spilling out of the corner of her mouth. She scraped away at it with a chipped fingernail and it flaked away like the starchy residue on the lid of a pot of cooked rice. She’d never felt more old and decrepit in her life. She’d only just turned thirty; she was too young to be past her prime. Louis was two years older and fit as a fiddle. She’d probably leave her for someone else; someone beautiful, with hair. That blonde filly on the football team, probably. That insufferable Danish harlot. 

She dug around in the centre console for a chapstick. She knew there was one in there somewhere, amongst all the detritus. Everywhere Louis went she generated so much crap. McDonald’s receipts, plastic forks, paper napkins, lozenge wrappers, a broken watch… Well, that was Harry’s actually. So were the now obsolescent bobby pins, hairbands, the coupon for frozen yoghurt, the Nectar card that she’d inexplicably taken out under the name Harry Tomlinson, just for the thrill of it.

Louis re-emerged from the house and locked the front door, then made her way to the car holding  two travel mugs and the house keys, a bottle of water and a travel pillow under her arm. She sat down with a sigh and put the coffee in the cup holders and began pulling items from her jacket pockets. “Your lip balm,” she said, passing a strawberry Carmex to Harry, “Your hand cream, your airpods, your glasses, your eyedrops, your Rescue Remedy. Right.” She slapped her hands on the steering wheel. “Ready to go?”

“My beanie. That I specifically mentioned is in the dryer?”

Louis pressed her lips together and launched herself out of the car and into the rain in the style of a contemporary dancer. She leapt in four great strides to the base of the steps, then raced up them like Billy Elliot, stepping twice on each stair, then finally flung the door open like an Old Hollywood heroine expecting to see her long lost lover on the other side. Her frustration was reaching hysterical levels which brought out her natural flamboyance. Also just kids handling and infiltration like Konoha doesn't have more people... Rock Lee, Kiba, Shino, Sai, Hanabi, Temari, Choji, Tenten... so many.

What do you think of Shikamaru as the Eighth Hokage? He's all bark and no bite. He makes me laugh. I was surprised he accepted the job when he said being Hokage would be troublesome. Barrier Team have been working without Ino too. They have these helmets for mind transmission and their automated sensing to alert the Hokage. Been missing since the cohabitation mission. Do you think she's been demoted? It's nice to see they are a self suficent and independent team that don't need a leader. Seeing them work makes me feel like Ino was a filler there for screentime.

I can't wait to see what will happen to Konoha. It will get destroyed but will Sakura save them? Or will Boruto? And Naruto will only come back at the end of the manga, no Naruto for the next years...

Regarding Shikamaru, I certainly wouldn't say that he's all bark and no bite, but he's obviously a major downgrade from Naruto power wise. Also, when you say that the Hokage role isn't his thing, I'd agree in the sense that it isn't really something that he would choose or volunteer to be, but I'd disagree in the sense that the main manga made it a point at regular intervals to highlight how good of a leader Shikamaru is, and how he would make a good Hokage, Asuma and Temari mentioned this explicitly. Following Naruto's capture, it was always gonna be between Shikamaru, Sakura and Kakashi to take his place as Hokage, but Sakura is needed to run the hospital and Kakashi is past his prime, so Shikamaru, as Naruto's right hand man, was the logical choice as his successor.

Regarding Ino and the Barrier Team, I doubt she's been demoted, I don't see why she would be when they don't have anyone better.
