Isekai Problems: Naptime
For a country to survive and thrive, especially up against neighbors with more resources or land area, it needs to be able to create wealth. This is not nearly as easy as somehow turning up a “previously unknown” gold or silver mine. Just check out what happened to Spain from the 1500s on, even with all the silver of Potosi behind them. Contemporary observers noted that the gold and silver flowed away from Spain like rain down roof gutters. They had money. What they didn’t have was wealth.
So how does a country get into the habit of creating wealth? Historians have been arguing that one a long time. Particularly since the 1800s on, when Europe started taking chunks out of China. The Qing Empire was large, had money, had firearms - why did it fall behind?
Better minds than mine have wrestled with that. I’m poking a few things I think would help, when dealing with a place your character wants to make freer and better for people.
One of the things you need to create wealth is free time.
Think it through. Wealth means that you have something other people want, that they can’t make for themselves or easily take from you. This implies that either you have the time to take goods from where they’re common to where they’re rare (hello traveling merchant) or you’re spending some time to put common materials together in a way most people can’t, or don’t want to. Both of which further imply that you had some time to think and experiment with What Might Work; to plot trading routes that’ll let you stay fed long enough to sell your wares, for example, or to pull and twist bread dough with specific spices most people don’t use to create a fancy feast-day bread.
Free time also means that maybe, just maybe, you’ve also had some time to sleep. Do not underestimate this.
Sleep maintains your memory, your immune system, your reflexes. Without enough sleep you die; over the long term by illness, in the short term if you slip doing something dangerous or end up with an infected cut. And while we may not have good numbers for how many hours people had to put in on a daily basis in most of the premodern world, we do have some for places like Victorian England. If you weren’t rich or at least upper middle class - fifteen hour workdays, twelve for children, was not uncommon.
If that’s not sobering enough for you... sleep deprivation is a classic tactic used by interrogators, torturers, and abusers. Especially abusers, over long-term relationships. Someone who can’t get enough sleep can’t get enough energy and focus together to figure out how to get away.
Being able to get enough sleep is a major step toward making your situation, whatever it is, better. With sleep and rest, so you can play around with odd ideas no one’s tried to make work before, you might create something new and valuable. How does an isekai’d person change a society to get that?
Plenty will depend on their specific circumstances. But if it’s at all like any of Earth’s premodern societies - we may not have hard numbers on hours the typical person worked in a day, but we do have a reasonable grasp of how people worked. And roughly nine out of ten, worldwide, were engaged in agriculture and food production. What can your isekai’d character do to make any of those easier? Because any improvement in that could potentially free up time for ninety percent of your society.
That. Is a lot. Of newly free man-hours.
So if your isekai’d character wants nothing more than a slow easy life and plenty of naps? That is a pretty good goal, one that could potentially change the world. Especially if they can make it happen for other people as well!

I reblogged this earlier without comment as food for thought, and a lot of you liked it, so now I'm gonna argue against it. It's really good! And it would be 100% correct if Don Quixote's name was William Fitzgerald and he was from Lincolnshire. But his name is Alonso Quixano and he's from La Mancha.
We're not in England. We're in Spain.
And the thing with Spain in 1600 is it displays a distinct LACK of capital, despite the ludicrous amounts of money concentrated in the hands of the very very few. Ironically, Spain's brutal colonialism drained all the silver of Peru to NOT build windmills. The Hapsburgs and the aristocracy spent it all on pointless constant warfare, art and architecture which looked great and did fuck-all, and the consumption of imported goods. They invested nothing on production (except wool! they did invest in that for a while; too bad the sheep trampled the fields at every migration and ruined Castille's grain production, forcing everyone to import their staple food), nothing on infrastructure, left agriculture primitive if not ruined, fully abandoned local industry, and ended up horribly indebted. The Empire where the sun never sets strangled itself with all this wealth, for which millions of people had been summarily murdered or slowly worked to death in the silver mines of PotosĂ. And it did not convert that wealth to capital. Its creditors did, though.
The thing with Spain in 1600 is that it didn't have a new class of business-savvy, investment-minded upwardly-mobile commoners. (At best it had a few rich merchants in Seville and Cadiz, who made tons of money by selling to a market that was obliged to buy from them, and they didn't need to be business-savvy, just connected enough to secure the position.) It didn't have landowners finding new and efficient ways to exploit their land and the people who worked it. And it didn't have highborn nobles threatened by the upward mobility of their social inferiors.
Because the thing with Spain in 1600 is that there was no upward mobility. Only downward. This is where the picaresque novel was born (Don Quixote wouldn't exist without it), and the picaresque protagonist is a little guy who tries and tries to rise from the gutter, but the world won't let him. The game is fixed. He can cheat all he wants, the system will always cheat more.
The thing with Spain in 1600 is that it's not just rogues who fail to make it, it's everyone. Everyone tries to make a buck, and everyone fails. Everyone gets poorer and hungrier and more desperate. The population dwindles. (Exceptions: the upper echelons of the aristocracy in whose hands the silver directly flows, the aforementioned merchants who sell goods to Spanish America, a handful of artisans like silversmiths and painters who nevertheless remain precarious like all artists ever, various officials who enjoy big salaries and bribes, and of course, as always, the Church.)
Spain did have a class of downwardly-mobile gentry, because land started concentrating in the hands of fewer and fewer owners: the upper nobility and the Church. So everyone else, from self-governing peasants to moderately landed gentry, found themselves with less or with nothing. But Don Quixote was not one of the moderately landed gentry. Don Quixote was lower than that: he was a hidalgo, a knight of the battlefield.
Hidalgos had little or no land, no money, and no access to all that silver. All they had was a tax exemption (a useless privilege when you earn nothing that can be taxed anyway) and the right to bear arms, which they often couldn't afford. But here's the thing with hidalgos, they weren't impoverished because they were competing with capital. They were impoverished because they never had any wealth to begin with, and the last time their military services were needed and rewarded was back in the Reconquista. The Hapsburg wars were waged on credit, and no one made a fortune out of them (certainly not Cervantes!) except Spain's creditors.
Like so many others in Spain in 1600, hidalgos were poor already, and failed to move upward, and as food prices did exactly that, they went hungry. Spanish literature, from picaresque novels to Don Quixote, makes fun of hidalgos, portraying them as conceited and comically minor nobles who remain poor because they're too proud to work like normal people. And while that's a stock character, a caricature, there was definitely some truth behind it, and there were plenty of hidalgos with this worldview in real life.
So who is Don Quixote's nemesis? Capital? Industry? Windmills? Nah. A good answer would be honest work for honest pay. That's what the literary hidalgos dreaded most of all: they imagined quests and duels and fields of honour because they couldn't imagine getting a job. Another good answer is Hapsburg Spain itself, the empire where the sun never sets and pretty much everyone's the worse for it, including the overwhelming majority of Spaniards. I have a more poetic answer, though.
Tumblr media
Don Quixote's nemesis is the mountain that eats men: the silver mines of PotosĂ, in today's Bolivia, where millions died for the glory of Spain, only for Spain to go bankrupt, and its own population to get impoverished. PotosĂ, from where a river of silver flowed through Spain, without enriching it, immediately passed to its creditors in the Low Countries, England, France, etc, and then these creditors turned it into capital, and thus were able to build modern Europe. PotosĂ, the mountain that ate 8 million people in 3 centuries, just so that Europe could get the funds to murder hundreds of millions more through colonialism and imperialism of unprecedented scale. PotosĂ, which made Spain's ruling class think they can afford all these wars (spoiler: they couldn't), and didn't spare a thought on how people could live. And the people lived badly.
If Don Quixote could tilt at that, how beautiful it would be! Still completely pointless (you can't deal with systemic problems by tilting at them, as the book eloquently shows), but how beautiful.

And perhaps Sancho could take advantage of the hubbab and steal an ingot for himself. Poor sod deserves it.
“If I were to pay you, Sancho,” responded Don Quixote, “according to what the greatness and nobility of this remedy deserve, the treasure of Venice and the mines of Potosí would not be enough.”
So, the thing about Don Quixote.
The thing about Don Quixote is that he tilts at windmills - tilts in the archaic sense of ‘charge at with a lance,’ because it’s the story of a guy who read so much chivalric romance that he lost his mind and started larping as a knight-errant. He was, if you’ll pardon the phrasing, chivalrybrained.
The thing about Don Quixote is, sometimes people take it as this story of whimsical and bravely misguided individualism or ‘being yourself’ or whatever, and they’re wrong. If it took place in the modern day, Don Quixote would absolutely be the story of a trust fund kid who blew his inheritance being a gacha whale until his internet got cut off so now he wanders around insisting that people refer to him as ‘Gudako.’
But the real thing about Don Quixote is that it was published in the early 1600s, and the thing about the 1600s is that Europe was one big tire fire. This is because 1600s Europe was still organized around feudalism (or ‘vassalage and manorialism’ if ya nasty), which assumed that land (and the peasants attached to it) were the only source of wealth. And that had worked just fine (well, ‘just fine,’ it was still feudalism) for a long time, because Europe had been a relative backwater with little in the way of urbanization or large-scale trade.
That was no longer true for Europe in the 1600s. The combination of urban development, technological advances, and brutal Spanish colonialism meant that land was no longer the sole source of wealth. Sudden there was a new class of business-savvy, investment-minded upwardly-mobile commoners, and another new class of downwardly-mobile gentry who simply couldn’t compete in this new fast-paced economy. Cervantes saw this process with his own eyes.
One of the symbols of this new age was the windmill, a complicated piece of engineering that was expensive to build but would then produce profits indefinitely - in other words, a windmill was capital.
The thing about Don Quixote is, when he tilts at windmills, he has correctly identified his nemesis.

Roofing Companies Near Me: Seasonal Maintenance Checklist for Homes in Waterford, CT
Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the unpredictable New England weather. As the seasons change in Waterford, CT, so do the demands placed on your roofing system. That’s why BP Builders, your trusted local roofing company, has put together this seasonal maintenance checklist to help homeowners stay proactive, save money, and extend the lifespan of their roof.
When searching for “roofing companies near me” in Waterford, homeowners want reliability, experience, and local knowledge. At BP Builders | Roofer, Roof Replacement, Roofing Company & General Contractor, we specialize in seasonal roof care tailored to Connecticut’s climate, ensuring your home is protected year-round.
Spring Roofing Maintenance
Spring is the perfect time to assess winter damage and prepare for the rainy season.
1. Inspect for Winter Damage: Look for missing shingles, leaks, or signs of moisture in the attic. Winter’s snow and ice can loosen shingles and expose vulnerable areas.
2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Debris from winter storms can clog your gutters, preventing proper water drainage. Overflowing water can damage your roof and foundation.
3. Check for Mold and Algae Growth: Warmer weather can trigger moss or algae growth. These can deteriorate your shingles over time.
4. Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection: BP Builders offers comprehensive spring roof inspections to detect issues before they turn into costly repairs.
Summer Roofing Maintenance
Although summer is generally a calm season weather-wise, UV exposure and storms can still do damage.
1. Examine Flashing and Seals: Heat can cause materials to expand and contract, potentially loosening flashing around vents, chimneys, and skylights.
2. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches: Prevent debris buildup and reduce the risk of storm damage by trimming nearby trees.
3. Ventilation Check: Ensure your attic is properly ventilated. Poor ventilation can lead to excessive heat buildup, damaging shingles and increasing cooling costs.
4. Preventative Repairs: Summer is an ideal time for roof repair or roof replacement since the weather is typically dry. Contact BP Builders to schedule your summer roofing projects.
Fall Roofing Maintenance
Fall prepares your roof for the coming cold, snow, and ice.
1. Remove Leaves and Debris: Leaves can trap moisture and clog your gutters. Keep your roof surface and gutters clean.
2. Inspect for Loose Shingles or Tiles: Strong autumn winds can loosen shingles, leading to leaks when snow starts to fall.
3. Install Gutter Guards: Consider installing guards to keep leaves and ice from blocking your drainage system.
4. Book a Pre-Winter Inspection: Let BP Builders inspect your roof before the first snowfall to ensure it's winter-ready.
Winter Roofing Maintenance
Winter weather in Waterford, CT can be brutal. A little prep can prevent big headaches.
1. Monitor for Ice Dams: Ice dams can form when warm air escapes your attic, melting snow that refreezes at the roof’s edge. This leads to leaks and structural damage.
2. Remove Excess Snow: Heavy snow accumulation can stress your roof. Use a roof rake or call professionals like BP Builders for safe removal.
3. Check Attic Insulation: Proper insulation prevents heat loss and reduces ice dam formation. Our team can inspect and improve insulation where needed.
Why Seasonal Maintenance Matters
Routine, seasonal roof maintenance helps prevent small issues from becoming major, costly problems. It also ensures that your roofing system stays strong, energy-efficient, and safe throughout the year. When residents of Waterford, CT look for roofing companies near me, they deserve a partner who understands the local climate—and that’s exactly what BP Builders delivers.
Call to Action: Protect Your Roof Year-Round
At BP Builders, we’re more than just a roofing company—we’re your partners in home protection. Whether you need a seasonal inspection, emergency repair, or a full roof replacement Waterford, CT , our expert team is ready to help.

Peeling Paint or Rust: These signs indicate water isn’t draining correctly and could be damaging the exterior of your home.
Pooling Water Around the Foundation: This suggests that your gutters are not effectively redirecting water away, posing a risk to your home’s foundation.
Water Stains or Mildew: If you notice water stains on your home’s siding or mildew buildup, it’s a clear sign that your gutters are not performing as they should.
Frequently Asked Questions

Products of Custom Metal Fabrication
Tumblr media
The word "custom" is associated with a costly premium service. Most businesses believe custom work is cost-efficient based on the outputs it can achieve. You can create many products with custom metal fabrication, most of them being practical and reliable for many uses. Learn more about each one of them in this post.
Roof Gutters
Metal roofs, gutters, and flashing use metal fabricators to accurately create designs. Gutters are tricky because they're usually seamless and have durable and dependable watertight seals. That's why custom metal fabricators ensure that premium roof gutters are well-fabricated and follow the manufacturer's guidelines carefully.
Air Conditioning Ducts
Insulated plastic or steel structures make up ducts. Metal is a typical choice because of its lifespan and performance. Custom air conditioning ducts use high-quality sheet metal with a special protective coating that ensures it has top-notch resistance against the elements.
Furnace Ducts and Flues
Chimney linings, ducts, and flues use high-quality steel for long-lasting performance and resistance against ash and heat entering the duct system. Sheet metal fabricators can create customized duct shapes, sizes, and configurations. They follow the designer's instructions down to the last dot.
Mailboxes
Classic homes with Victorian or New England architecture may prefer using custom mailboxes suitable for their aesthetic. High-quality steel with weather resistance is a top choice. Aluminum and stainless steel are malleable and fully customizable for custom sheet metal fabrication.
Prototype Machinery
Prototypes require precision measurements that only manual fabrication can achieve. Experienced prototype fabricators like Demtra Sheet Metal Industries can create the components and assemble your new product with outstanding results. We only use state-of-the-art CNC and manual machining methods.
Demtra Sheet Metal Industries has worked with numerous businesses for custom sheet metal signs, prototypes, and other products. Our decades of experience assure you that we can achieve the best results in every project. Contact us today to set your appointment with us.

Many of Alba's first batch of election candidates were recruited from disgruntled nationalists who remained focused on the SNP, and whose seizure of several seats on the party's ruling NEC last year was celebrated as a defeat of “woke ideology”. They include some of the most prominent critics of the SNP leadership’s (now “paused”) proposals to reform the Gender Recognition Act, but this is combined with a more general demonisation of “social” concerns, which many of Salmond’s more left-leaning backers view as a cover for economic conservatism. The architect of the SNP’s economic moderation was, of course, Salmond himself, who knows that the Scottish public is not as radical in its preferences as some like to pretend.
But Alba is not about left or right; it is about forcing a distinctive variety of nationalism into Scottish public life, defined above all by the performance of authenticity. Scottish nationalism’s success has been built on a kind of native cosmopolitanism, offering a highly "inclusive" vision of nationhood that self-consciously incorporates diverse identities into its own. This inclusion still relies on certain subtle exclusions, chiefly of those who see nationhood not in terms of countless negotiated minorities, but simple, decisive majorities – “supermajorities”, even. Unsatisfied by Scotland’s thin, cautious, postmodern national identity, an increasingly loud minority of the Yes movement now openly yearns for something more honest, substantial and majoritarian. Where the alt-right claim to be “red-pilled”, these alt-nats are saltire-pilled. Their angst at the myriad alienations and disappointments of contemporary capitalism is tangled up with a more immediate process of disenchantment: the stagnation of an independence movement that once burst suddenly into life, and gave them something pure and sincere to fight for. It promised a moment of collective heroism in a country hard-wired for moderation by centuries of unwanted upheaval, from the Highland Clearances to deindustrialisation.
This was an empty promise, but the escapism – from Britain, and from the everyday helplessness of neoliberal life – was the point. It was Salmond, as SNP leader, who made that promise; Sturgeon, less of a romantic than her predecessor and faced with a far more obstructionist UK government, was stuck with the impossible task of keeping it. That betrayal, inherent in all nationalist politics, has now become too obvious to ignore, so it has to be projected on to something other than the nation itself.
In its disdain for “wokeness”, its mistrust of trans self-identification and its suspicion of a leadership that takes the slow road, Alba’s ideological core represents a Scottish nationalist version of what the writer Joe Kennedy calls “authentocracy”. It sees fraudulence everywhere, dressing up its own bizarre preoccupations as dissident realness. The trouble is that there is nothing more inauthentic than somebody trying desperately to prove their authenticity, which is how we have ended up with Alba’s supporters struggling to pronounce their own party’s name.
This is the only way of understanding Alba’s existence, its potential appeal, and its likely function in Scottish politics. If all that’s needed is another pro-independence party on the list, more left-wing and internally democratic than the SNP, why not support the Scottish Greens? The answer is that the Scottish Greens are too woke; Alba is the new vanguard party of Scotland’s “war on woke”, a bekilted ally, whether its supporters like it or not, of Faragism and the right-wing gutter press. Scottish politics is usually a decade or so behind England’s – the centrist SNP is only now enjoying peak Blairism – and it was perhaps only a matter of time before we had our own, indigenous culture-war electoral force to match Ukip and the Brexit Party.
Salmond may have made the modern SNP, but he was also made by it, kept sensible and serious by the requirements of a big-tent, pragmatic electoral strategy. After resigning as SNP leader in 2014 he had to watch from the back benches as Nigel Farage achieved his own dream of independence without ever emerging from a pompous, self-indulgent comfort zone. Owing to the weak spots of the Scottish electoral system and the slow degeneration of the Yes movement, Salmond and his fans may have finally found a way of settling into their own safe space, abandoning the compromised work of gradualism to pursue a different kind of power, out on the shadowy fringes of acceptable conduct.

March 2021 Books I Read
Tumblr media
*assume all the book are aimed at an adult audience unless specified otherwise in the description
Thanks a Lot, Mr. Kibblewhite: My Story by Roger Daltrey ★★★☆☆ 🎧 Non-fiction autobiography of the frontman of The Who. 368 pages. A more down-to-earth rock autobiography than the usual, with reflections on the era, his life, and some of the more controversial things that happened. The audiobook was narrated by the author really well, but coming at it from the angle of someone just interested in the era as a whole, it didn’t give me what I wanted from it (though, admittedly, that’s not really a fault of the book) and I didn’t find it as gripping as others I’ve read. Still done well though and it sparked some ideas, which was the main point.
The Flower Girls by Alice Clark-Platts ★★★★☆ (3.5*) 🎧 Thriller. 339 pages. The main character, along with her older sister, was involved in the murder of a toddler when they were young children. It has interesting themes that question the justice system (particularly regarding underaged offenders), morality, whether ‘evil’ exists, and the lack of integrity in tabloid journalism. Another where the audiobook was narrated really well. It’s dark, obviously, but it doesn’t go into too much explicit detail about what happened. Has good use of multi-POV. It gets fairly tense though a little predictable, but I liked that this one had more going on with what it discusses than your standard thriller. Ending could’ve been more satisfying but it still wasn’t a bad ending.
On Power: My Journey Through the Corridors of Power and How You Can Get More Power by Gene Simmons  ★★☆☆☆ 🎧 Non-fiction autobiography/business management/self-help. 163 pages. I wanted to get an insight into the marketing strategies of KISS (since they’ve always been way more of a brand than a band) for music history research purposes, but that’s not what this book is. It’s exactly what the title says it is (I’m not sure why that surprised me either). Mostly common sense rather than anything concrete. It can be very, uh, boomer-ish, though it does raise a valid point with how if people want to make a good difference in the world then they’ll need money and power to do it on a large scale. Did it give an insight into certain philosophies? Yes. The world of music? Not so much. Not directly anyway.
The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan (The Black Iron Legacy #1)  ★★★★☆ (3.5*s) 📖 Fantasy. 512 pages. This deserves more attention (it only has a couple of thousand ratings on GR). It’s a bit dark, but I wouldn’t call it grimdark. There’s a small cast of characters: a man turning to stone, a thief occasionally involuntarily slammed by visions, a ghoul who eats people, an investigator, and a scholar who are all linked together due to a heist gone wrong.  There's really just two main POVs and a few other minor ones so keeping track of characters isn’t too much work. It’s all set in the same city so the worldbuilding isn’t too daunting. The writing style is great – it reads very vividly and smoothly, and it has a unique vibe compared to other fantasy stories. The world isn’t that technologically far behind ours, and there are a lot of humanoid monsters very much present. It can be a bit gory and has definite horror influences (think men made of wax, eldritch worm creatures, body parts in jars etc), but it’s not to the extent that it'd bother the average reader. The balancing of action and character was well done and it’s the most original new fantasies I’ve read in a while.
Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter ★★★★★ (4.5*s) 📖 Thriller/horror. 548 pages. I don’t want to say too much because it’s better going into it partially blind, but I will say this: it’s very graphic and a fair amount of reviewers say it gave them nightmares. A lot of the content is dark and massively fucked up, and that’s either going to entice people or put them off. Plot: involves the family of a missing young woman and a theme of ‘is it better to know what happened or remain ignorant?’. I was fairly meh for around the first 25% of this book. Then there was an ‘oh shit’ moment. Followed by several more ‘oh shit!‘ moments at increasing volume. Then the last 75% was ridiculously gripping. Amazingly tense, very fast to read writing style (might’ve helped with not inspecting potential plot holes too closely though), great character development, and it makes you fear for the characters and feel for them.
The Last Family in England by Matt Haig ★★★☆☆ (2.5*s) 🎧 Contemporary fiction. 352 pages. A suburban domestic drama from the perspective of a dog. Labradors have a pact that they should protect their human families at all costs. They believe whenever a family falls apart it’s either because the dog didn’t do its job or because the family didn’t have a dog. But other dog breeds world over have abandoned the pact in favour of hedonism. It’s quirky and charming, even funny in places with how seriously the main character (well, dog) takes himself, but I found all the family drama slightly tedious and most of the characters not very likable. It also wasn’t the light-hearted read I was wanting/expecting it to be.

"I’ll give you something to believe in, I’d rather fail than never try"
:: Solo ::
The sound of my mobile phone buzzing against the hardwood of the bedside table, caused me to jump and pull from my sleeping slumber. Barely able to open my eyes, I reached over to grab my phone. A groan surpassed my lips and my hand moved to pinch the bridge of my nose. My eyes squeezed shut. I tried to figure out where I was, actually who I was. Sometimes I even forgot who I am and what my own name was. My head was banging and I could feel the vein in my forehead pulsating like a bitch.
The sound of my own blood rushing through my system was heightened in my ear in the silence of the room. Wiping the sleep from my eyes, and peeking open an eye. I punched in my passcode and groaned as my phones backscreen came to life, almost blinding me.
“Ah, shit!”
Another groan came as I placed the phone, screen down onto my chest. Using the balls of both my hands, I pressed them into my eye sockets. I needed painkillers and a shower to even attempt to wake me. Taking in a heavy sharp breath, eventually taking my hands away from my face. My surroundings slowly began to come into focus.
“What the f

.”
This wasn’t my apartment, nor my bed. I had yet again woken up in a hotel room. At least it wasn’t a gutter. That was kinda one of my worst fears. Being so blind drunk and ending up in a gutter. I had done some crazy ass shit over the years. One time while on tour with my band ‘The Shadow Side’, I was so wasted while on stage, that I thought it was a good idea to jump from the stage to another platform. Completely misjudging the distance, I landed nose first into the railing, breaking my nose, and cracking four ribs. But I had so much alcohol in my system, that it completely numbed my nerve receptors that I continued the performance despite of that.
So the fact I was actually in a bed and it was only my head that was pounding. I was taking this as a complete ass win. Even if it wasn’t the most brightest idea I have ever had. I felt a heavy weight finally across my stomach and raised the covers. I was naked. Fucking score. Way to go Ethan. We know what you did last night. An arm, which wasn’t mine laid across my stomach. Turning up my nose, I turned my head slowly to see the mass of red hair covering the girls face. I couldn’t even remember coming back with her, let alone her name or even what she looked like. Classy Ethan. She wasn’t the first, nor would she be the last of one of my rebellious indiscretions and I was going to need to slip out before she even woke up. Hopefully.
Picking up my phone from my chest, I used the other to gingerly take her wrist, I lifted her arm up off of me and slipped out of the bed, it wasn’t until I was perfectly free from the bed, I placed her hand down slowly. Cringing when I heard a slight moan. My body freezing as I waited to see if she is going to wake up. She doesn’t and I breathe a sigh of relief. Looking around the bedroom. It slowly came to me that we were in a hotel room. Thank fuck for that. I could escape easily and never have to worry about seeing her again, whoever ‘she’ was.
Grabbing my boxers and pulling them on, I did the same with my jeans. Slipping my phone into my pocket. I would wait until I got outside to see who had tried contacting me, I didn’t have time to hang around here and I was really in need of painkillers and a shower. Finding my shirt and pulling it on, I made sure I was wearing all my necklaces, rope and bead bracelets, I didn’t want to be leaving anything behind for her.
Sitting on a nearby chair, pulling on my socks and boots, I did the laces loosely. Before pushing myself up and looking around for my jacket. Spotting it near the door, amongst the girls clothes, I snatched it up and shrugged it on. Checking the pockets for my keys and wallet, which thankfully were there. I did the most disgusting thing I had to always do after nights like this. It wasn’t pleasant nor something that I enjoyed doing, but it had become a necessity since these one night stands would do anything these days for money and fame.
Grabbing the bin liner from the hotel bin beside the bed. I tied it into a knot and shoved it into my pocket for now to dispose of when I was clear from the hotel. Wherever the hotel was of course. I had an apartment in New York I shared with my childhood best friend Chelsea. We had known each other since we were six. We both grew up in London, England. To somewhat middle class parents. We lived next door to each other and have been inseparable ever since. Chelsea like to give the impression she was an innocent and naive woman, but she wasn’t. She could drink, eat and kick ass like the best of them.
I have always been into music, and she was always there for the ride. So when we were sixteen, we moved from London to LA with my band, The Shadow Side to try and make it big or even try and make it. After two long years of living in and out of vans, sleeping rough and taking shitty jobs so we could pay to eat. We were finally signed to a label and we hit it big, quickly. Maybe too quickly. None of us would quite handle the shit that was going down. We were massive on the alternative metal scene, and able to live comfortably, but we weren’t rich and famous. Even now, nearly a decade on.
But we were selling sold out shows around the world, we were touring every other year. I went off and did a solo project for a year and now we were back full force as a band. We all moved to New York to get away from the large press and media of LA who was following us around and documenting every mistake the band made. We were trying to clean up our image somewhat, but the moment we got back on tour, shit went out of the window. We were currently recording and writing our sixth studio, my seventh if you include the solo project and things were going well. That just meant tour and that was where we shook hands with the devil and shit got crazy.
Chelsea was our tour manager. She did the organising and made sure everyone had their shit together before we took to the stage. You didn’t want to mess with her and her schedule, because she would drop kick your ass into next week. She was feisty and took zero shit from anyone. I backed her 100%, and no one got away with disrespecting her. Ever. But we lived together. The amount of social media comments on that was crazy. Two people of the opposite sex couldn’t be just friends. It made us chuckle mind. It wasn’t anyone’s business and we stopped defending our friendship a long ass time ago.
So now, with a trash bag with last nights condoms in my pocket, I slipped from the hotel room and closed the door silently behind me. As I walked down the hallway to the elevator, I ran my hand through my hair, puffing out my cheeks. As I waited for the elevator to come, there was a maids cart, so I took the opportunity to dump the trash bag discreetly and shove my hands in my leather jacket. When the doors to the elevator opened. I stepped inside and hit the ground floor button. Resting my head back against the glass mirror. Trying to push the throbbing pain in my head away. It was blurring my concentration. Opening my eyes slowly I remembered my phone message and pulled my phone from my pocket. The doors opened and I stepped out.
Palming my phone as I went to the check out desk. I gave over my details and explained someone was still in the room. I paid with my credit card and shoved it back in my wallet, and into my pocket, peering over at the guy as he checked me out.
“Don’t suppose you have any painkillers?”
He looked me over once before smiling.
“Certainly sir”
I shuddered. ‘sir’ I was twenty-seven. I wasn’t that damn old. Pulling my shades from my pocket and putting them on. I clearly looked like utter shit. I felt like shit. I would say I am never drinking again but that was a complete lie, once this headache went I would be back to my old self again. When he came back with the painkillers and a bottle of water, I took them from him and thanked him. Heading outside, I looked around. I noticed we weren’t far from the bar I attended last night. I knew it was where I was without even having to remember. It was the same bar that Chelsea and I, along with the other band members frequented.
Taking the painkillers and knocking it back with water. I hailed down a cab and got in the back. Giving over my address and settling back. I finally got around to reading the text message. I had a few missed calls from Chelsea, along with Sam, Jamie and Declan, the other guys in the band. I wasn’t surprised by those, and would listen to the voice messages later. Going to my messages, there were loads. I skipped over most of them, really not in the mind space to read them. It was Chelsea’s messages I did open and there were around ten, all starting from three am this morning. Shit. It was the last message that made me chuckle.
“You better be dead or dying asshole because I am going to kill you when you get home”
Aww the love from my best friend. Beautiful. She worried about me and because I hadn’t contacted her, she didn’t know if I had lived out my worst fear and died in a gutter somewhere. I debated on replying but I didn’t. I would give her the satisfaction of killing me when I strolled through the door at 7:30am. I would never take her berating of me away from her. Especially since I needed to be in the studio this afternoon with the guys. Smiling amused to myself, I closed my eyes and rested my head back. Just waiting for the headache to pass now, and get home and shower.
