This month has been a little weird, because in the past it's been the point of time where me and a few others ramp up for NaNoWriMo event planning.

I decided not to be an ML this year - I'm one of the many breakaway regions forging ahead with an independent event for our writers - but several people had been hoping to work with HQ again, and seeing the chatter around that is sad because it looks like NaNo isn't letting it happen.

Last year at this point, everyone who had volunteered to be an ML had been given instructions for this year, and links to order ML kits (usually the annual stickers). We'd get instructions in Aug on how to update digital spaces for the new year, and were encouraged to start scheduling events.

But it's Aug 1st and HQ has never even asked if anyone wants to volunteer this year. It's looking more and more likely that they have canned the entire Municipal Liason program, and if you don't have MLs what's the point of regions? If the community aspect of NaNo is going away, is it just a website now?

What made NaNo awesome was the other writers I'd hang out with on zoom or coffee shops.

I thought i had already grieved my time with NaNo, it had headed down a path I didn't want to follow and I had put so much energy into it. I'm building something new now even! But it's still so, so sad to think that it's just not my participation that has ended, but an entire program. And soon, I suspect, an entire organization.

NaNo is running on fumes, spiraling down and alienating so much of its old user base due to poor management and communication. Will it even run in November, I'm not entirely sure. I don't know if the donations they've received coverage servers fees.

Writers might have to do NaNo, or just write a draft in November, solo and that sounds so sad. I've only ever won because of my community (my region had at least 20 events scheduled in November).

I'd encourage people to reach out to old regions if you can - see if there's a grassroots community it morphed into. Or just any writing community - mine is hybrid now and all our writing events in November will have zoom options.

I hoped maybe the new HQ would build something that would work for someone, but i have a sneaking suspicion that it won't. NaNoWriMo might just become something like NoShaveNovember or Dry January. A thing you do, but no official community.

Feeling real bummed about this, because i volunteered with NaNo for 5 years and wrote for 12.

a november day.

i scrape off the dirt from my scalp that gathered during the window-down drives through the city. that is just a romantic metaphor for the fact that my back is breaking and there is far too much wind in my life for me to handle. i am falling weak. i stand in the door way coming to a realization of how my evil has caught up to me and how it slowly takes all my lovers by the hand and guides them away from me. even my evil is more lovable than me. i put my notebooks in front of me but i can’t write with my hands. i’m scared of making mistakes again. i sit every night on my bed while my sister sleeps and i stare into space. vulnerable in the dark. what happened to me? if tomorrow some body would ask how i am, i wouldn’t be able to lie. i think i’ll cry. there are people i love but i can’t show them right. i wish i could hold them again and tell them that i love them. please see that i love you. please glance into my body and you’ll see pieces of you scattered around. i wouldn’t be myself if it weren’t for you. all of you, that have loved me. i have loved you too and i fail to remember a time i was good at showing it. i understand but the weight is causing me to sit on the floor. i don’t like the floor, it is full of dust that gets onto my legs. i can’t seem to be able to take the dirt off of me so i take cold and hot showers twice a day. i scrape it off but all that comes off is blood. it’s sweet on my skin but bitter on the floor as it washes away. i ask God why He hasn’t been answering my prayers since months. then i realize i haven’t sat down to pray. so i prayed today. i whispered to God, “today i want to be selfish. i’ll ask for my peace. bring me peace, please.” what followed was a sense of guilt. i prayed for everyone. i brush my teeth twice as hard and wake up with an ache in my jaw from having it clenched all through the night. the anxiety follows me in my dreams where i’m met with death. he holds my hand so tender in the snow under the cherry blossoms as i fall to my demise. it is a soft landing, “i’ll never get to experience the snow falling on my face as i fall to my death,” i whisper. i play songs over and over again and pretend to meet people and tell them all my secrets. they don’t tell me theirs, they just listen. i do that during the night when my sister is sleeping. i talk to the ghosts in my room and they listen. i picture emptying my pockets full of sins onto the lap of people that don’t exist. the cold reaches my brittle wrist and it starts to ache. winter makes me weak. my hunger turns into nausea and my nausea turns into emptiness. days of lost appetite are followed by a single day where i can’t help but try to fill the emptiness in my whole body with food. i still come out of those days hollow.
