me reading the night agent book: hey this scene actually helps prove that rose WOULD be a good night agent
also me: no shit it's the source inspiration for the show
#the night agent#rose larkin#there's actually some significant differences from the show to the book which is very interesting#most notably that the night agent actually refers to those working the graveyard shifts and not the agents on the other end of the line

Books of 2024: GRAVEYARD SHIFT by M. L. Rio.
I really liked IF WE WERE VILLAINS back when it came out, so I was excited for the same author to do Creepy Fucked Up Fungus and Questionable Scientific Ethics: The Insomnia Book.
This was fun! Very short (my copy is only 108 pages), and it takes place over the course of one (1) sleepless night (which, coincidentally, is how I read it), but I enjoyed it for what it was. I've seen some people in reviews wishing it were longer, but I thought we got to know all the characters pretty well for a story that happens in less than 10 hours, and I had a good time.
#books of 2024#graveyard shift#m.l. rio#books#book photos#i can recommend pounding coffee to get you through the wee hours but i canNOT recommend chainsmoking about it lol#i liked how all the characters had very different lives that led them to the same place on this academic campus every night!#and i liked their weird group dynamic too actually#and their distinct personalities--none of them felt like they WOULD know each other in daylight actually (except maybe tamar) but--#--i liked that a lot too#so yeah this was fun! not like earth shattering or anything but a good little graveyard romp with vaguely academic vibes#i am however a little grumpy at the pricepoint on the hardback given how it felt in my hands lmao#that's a me problem though and a capitalism problem XD#i wanted hardback because i have her other one hardback#i'm glad it's hardback but. the paper. was not gr8#i'll have to dig VILLAINS out of storage and compare#FUNGUS FUN INSOMNIA NOT FUN BUT AT LEAST THEY HAD A GROUP PROJECT ABOUT IT#glad i put this on my nano adjacent list too it was Fitting XD

Not that I needed it but more proof my circadian rhythm doesn't fit in nicely with 9-5 capitalism: After months of having to get up around 8AM, I still default to staying up "late" and have to set multiple alarms to maybe get up.
That should be long enough to adjust but nope, I can't do it just like I couldn't do it when I was in school.
#and that's with a prescription for legal meth so you'd think i'd be wide awake before 9#instead i'm bloody tired well into the afternoon despite stimulants on top of large amounts of caffeine#if i'm allowed to go back to my natural rhythm i actually only need 6 or so hours of sleep a night and am wide awake before noon#hell i get out of bed willingly instead of having to force myself in a move that works less than half the time#an hour or two difference may not seem like much on paper but it's the difference between being miserable all day and 'seizing the day'#also employers get so pissy if you're adamant that you can't start at 8am on the dot#like i will stay 'late' to work a full shift i just don't want to be fucking miserable the whole time#also just because someone doesn't wake at the crack of dawn doesn't mean they're eager for graveyard shifts as an alternative#i've worked both and can safely say hated both#but say you want to start work at 10am and you're seen as a lazy fuck even if you get more done than anyone else#people can be so up their ass about how sleep cycle = morality#and the only thing less moral than a night owl is someone who is neither morning person nor night owl /s

i wanna talk about chiyo's familiar being a dog in her witch au bc her loyalty is such a defining trait, but my brain can't flesh it out more than that statement. so we're doing some bullet point headcanons tonight <3
chiyo gave her familiar the name jun, named after her childhood dog. though instead of a german shepherd, this jun is a tosa inu or japanese mastiff. large, daunting, and often dozing at her side while she works, jun protects chiyo from harm.
in fact, jun appeared in front of chiyo during middle school, chasing away a group of her classmates and following her home. her father explained he came because he was needed; he stayed because he must have seen something in her that he trusted.
chiyo 100% has a bunch of photos on her phone of spells from her family's book so that she doesn't have to flip through the pages every time she needs an incantation, ingredients, or directions. she'd like to use sticky tabs to make it easier to find certain spells, but her father and grandmother threaten to hit her hands if she does.
the paintings hung up in the shop are all chiyo's, and if you find yourself inexplicably drawn towards one of them, that probably means something. those paintings are sometimes just a reflection of her creativity, but sometimes they are a reflection of the future, too.
#that's it bc my brain is mush actually which is so!! annoying bc my muse is high ;;;;#i sit before flowers & hope they will train me in the art of opening up | headcanons#the graveyard shift | modern fantasy#why is this verse tag not saving....... excuse me

zombie wanting to eat the flesh of their loved ones as a way of showing affection ‼️‼️
#obviously this is about octavia#octavia actually exclusively eats brains and candy btw ...... she doesnt like textureless brains tho they need to be wrinkled up#onion gets octavia a gift for her rebirthday (anniversary of reanimation) and wakes up the next day with a finger missing#i would say more about octavia's being a zombie and her nature to eat flesh and how that effects her relationships#specifically with one character.... but alas it is spoilers.....#AAAAAAAAAA I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THEM NOWWWWWW. whatever. this will be the driving force towards completing reassass. zombie love <3#reassassination#did u know the actual name of reassassination is reanimation-assassination? thats way too long tho#alternative titles were actually 'devil-debt' + 'graveyard shift' and more that i dont remember

now that i have a place to talk about it i have to say that. as the resident plane nerd. shusterman did a pretty good job talking about the planes in the graveyard.
but the one thing i can not believe is the fact that the fucking COMBOM is a WORLD WAR 2 BOMBER. SHUSTERMAN. DO YOU KNOW HOW FUCKING TINY THOSE INTERIORS ARE. SIR.???????
i simply can not suspend my disbelief enough to think that a shit ton of computer and radio equipment + a team of like ten kids would fit. into the nose. of a . world war 2 bomber. bro that's just not happening. not even in a b-29. i know those planes look massive but trust me most of the fuselage is for. well. the bombs.

hey shusterman. look at this. do you. did you. um. Think? this is a b-29. the biggest bomber in ww2. do you see that tiny cockpit? and the tiny bunks? there's no way bro.... there's just no way.... even if they stripped the entire thing it's just not built for that kind of shit.
like i get that the plane has to be a bomber bc comBOM but c'mon... it could've just been a cargo plane... an MD-11 or even a fucking converted 767.... this is the one thing that hurts me so bad and IT'S HAYDEN'S WHOLE DEAL TOO AND IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. GOD THE AUTISM. WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE
#no one will ever understand this but i think about it at least once a day and have an aneurism#like. see my issue is. the combom is never described as particularly cramped either#there could've been a possibility to play up the whole ww2 bomber concept by talking about how cramped and claustrophobic it was#that's just how those bombers ARE#and the glass nose too? cmon man there could've been some cool scenes with that#also some good fanfic possibilities.#like i dunno. if you're going to consistently bring up what era the plane is from at least make it actually consistent#there was so much POSSIBLITY to describe the combom as this place where you're sure to get a concussion#and you gotta go visit risa after working a shift in their bc your posture has gone to shit from being hunched over a computer#THERE'S LITERALLY A FUCKING TUNNEL YOU CRAWL THROUGH TONGO FROM THE COCKPIT TO THE BUNK ROOM#COME ONNNNNNN#well we all know how bad shusterman is at making things interesting but man. wasted opportunity#anyway i will stop being a FUCKING PLANE NERD#keeping this out of the main tag#cal has thoughts#graveyard

Books of 2024: November Wrap-Up.
Hi, y'all! I'm actually shocked that I managed to get through four (4) books this month, because it was NANO and I also WROTE A WHOLE BOOK!! The (written) book in its two notebooks is pictured beneath the pen and NaNo Earrings :)
All of these reads were NaNo-adjacent, somehow (I like to stack my reading with my writing project so all the Vibes are Correct)--either Space, or Haunted, or Fucked Up Fungi (I wrote a weird book this month)(I had a great time).
Photos and/or reviews linked:
A HALF-BUILT GARDEN - ★★★½ I enjoyed this! It was very slow and contemplative, and I was surprised by how long it took me to read (#NaNoProblems), but I'm glad I did, and Rhamnetin was a DELIGHT.
JUST LIKE HOME - ★★★★ Reread for me, holds up very well! Star rating unchanged from first time through. I actually do recommend rereading this one, knowing exactly when Daphne dies.
GRAVEYARD SHIFT - ★★★½ I enjoyed this one too! Short fun weird little insomnia romp. Love a good fucked up fungus and a motley POV crew.
THE NIGHT GUEST - ★★★★ This was DEEPLY fucked up and AMAZINGLY crafted horror/suspense, and I definitely had delayed nightmares about it. I also love a good spec fic in translation (this one's from Icelandic!). Cats are NOT safe, very graphically so, so proceed with caution if that's a warning you need.
Under the Cut: A Note About ~*★Stars★*~
Historically, I have been Very Bad™ about assigning things Star Ratings, because it's so Vibes Heavy for me and therefore Contingent Upon my Whims. (Example: I don't like that stars are Odd, because that makes three the midpoint and things are rarely so truly mid for me)(I have hacked my way around this with a ½). Here is, generally, how I conceptualize stars:
★ - This was Bad. I would actively recommend that you do NOT read this one, no redeeming qualities whatsoever, not worth the slog. Save Yourself, It's Too Late For Me. Book goes in the garbage (donate bin).
★★ - This was Not Good. I would not recommend it, but it wasn't a total waste or wash--something in here held my interest/kept my attention/sparked some joy. I will not be rereading this ever. Save Yourself (Or Join Me In Suffering, That Seems Like A Cool Bonding Activity).
★★★ - This was Good/Fine/Okay/Meh. I don't care about this enough to recommend it one way or another. Perfectly serviceable book, held my interest, I probably enjoyed myself (or at least didn't actively loathe the reading). I don't have especially strong feelings. You probably don't need to save yourself from this one--if it sounds like your jam, give it a shot! Just didn't resonate with me particularly powerfully. I probably won't reread this unless I'm after something in particular.
★★★½ - I liked this! I'll probably recommend it if I know it matches someone's vibes or specific requests, but I didn't commit to a star rating on Goodreads. More likely to reread, but not guaranteed.
★★★★ - I really enjoyed this!! I would recommend it (sometimes with caveats about content warnings or such--I tend to like weird fucked up funny shit, and I don't have many hard readerly NO's). Not a perfect book for me by any means, but Very Good. This is something I would reread! Join me!!
★★★★★ - I LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS, IT REWIRED MY BRAIN, WILL RECOMMEND TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE AT THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION (content warning caveats still apply--see 4-star disclaimer). Excellent book, I'll reread it regularly, I'll buy copies for all my friends, I'll try to convince all of Booklr to read it, PLEASE join me!!
#books of 2024#books of 2024: november wrap-up#a half-built garden#ruthanna emrys#just like home#sarah gailey#graveyard shift#m.l. rio#the night guest#hildur knutsdottir#did i mention that i WROTE A WHOLE BOOK??#okay well like. a Compost Draft book lol. a Rotting Slough Of Good Ideas Book (affectionate)#i had a Revelation this year about my prep process and why my last four years have felt so rushed (spoiler: the root cause is LIVING HERE)#BUT! it's because i thrive on two (2) months of prep#it shakes out to like a month of brainstorming and then a month of carding/plotting/prewriting i think#but i've been speedrunning books since. 2021. which. was fine that year#because i set out to make a mess in a month (and it was a retelling)#fine in 2022 because that was self-indulgent crossover no plot or worldbuilding required#NOT fine in 2023 because i had an Actual Book i wanted to do and i rushed the prep and then i was grumpy#because i assumed i was writing a first draft but it was more like a compost draft#but not recognizing that made it not fun#THIS year i FINALLY understood what people mean when they say 'draft zero' (which does not work for me. because a draft on page exists/not0#and i realized i was basically doing that--halfway writing a book and halfway brainstorming on page#but KNOWING that fixed me because it Freed Me lol. so i think of this as compost draft#(appropriate for fungus book)#it's a full mess but it's MY mess and there's some good stuff in there#but for it (like for 2021 which i also knew). i will have to literally rewrite the book from the ground up#to make it a First Draft#i did not intentionally set out to do this with last year's so it wasn't fun :(#BUT I HAD FUN THIS YEAR THIS'LL BE A NEAT BOOK WHEN IT'S LEGIBLE
