The thing is, Jinx could have not blown up over half the council and peace still wouldn’t have happened. Piltover is being operated and plied by those who have never conceived of a world united and at their core, do not want it.

The council at large is more than happy to indulge in the exports and labor of Zaun but repeatedly demand Hextech enforced martial action at any rumbling of dissatisfaction that pricks their ears. Peace is not as easy as a declaration. This would have happened again.

Even down to Cassandra creating a way to divert The Grey from further infecting Zaun’s air being a protected family secret rather than a staple, standard known and used practice betrays this. Because The Grey is not the only poison choking Zaun’s air. It was simply the one doing so much damage that it couldn’t be ignored. It was a diversion of the issue. Especially because Cassandra also saved the recipe for The Grey itself.

Not to mention, Ambessa clearly would have done whatever necessary to disguise her manufactured military coup as a concerted effort to protect Piltover. If Jinx hadn’t done it, Ambessa would’ve offered someone else the opportunity, albeit in a more controlled gambit. Hell. She probably would’ve offered it to Jinx if she could have gotten Mel in a protected position.

One of the best parts of S2 so far is how well they’re able to showcase that one act of retaliation against Piltover’s powerful was enough to carry them into martial law. And the juxtaposition of how Piltover’s mourning and attempts to rebuild are held as sacred compared to Zaun’s….Effervescent.

more Cadmus gripe time because I just finished the last boy on earth arc and ughhhh SB was so devastated to return home and find everyone gone, and we saw that Roxy spent weeks trying so hard to find him when everyone else said he was gone and good riddance, she even found Robin's number and asked Batman for help, she even went to see if Knockout knew anything, and everyone at Cadmus knows this- and when SB comes back from spending months as an amnesiac captive and wants so badly to see his friends again, they don't use their incredible resources to track down Roxy and help reunite them, they take him to Paris and claim it's because giving him a new scenery and something to hit will do him good and get his mind off it, but then it turns out they just want to field test him and get him to work for them. SB going from being exploited by Leech to exploited by Cadmus is bridged by a story where he's literally stripped of all agency and the ability to speak for himself and I'm going to scream.

It's the misogyny for me. Like, it's bad enough Dashner writes the girls Like That, but then the only ones kept around/alive are pigeonholed into Love Interest and Jealous Rival when I don't think they even meet each other in the entirety of TST book or have even a conversation in the movie. Buddy, if I met who looked like the only other girl in however long, we might not be friends but bet your ass we're gonna at least stick together. (Well, y'know, until the whole double-cross thing but you know what I mean.)

Also, Rachel is an Elite. She's one of the ones specifically saved by WCKD as one of their best Candidates. In the book, WCKD broke their own "observation only" rules to save Thomas's life after his bullet wound got infected for that literal reason. And also YEAH THAT'S NOT HOW YOU RUN AN EXPERIMENT, DUDES.

And if Rachel and Aris are supposed to be the equivalent of Thomas and Teresa, then let them meet! Let him have someone on His Side of things (movie Aris sort of passively is, book Aris is more clearly Teresa's side (still haven't started TDC yet tho 😭)) who is also like "yeah, this shit is FUCKED, dude, this is not how we help people," and YES let the girlies have a confrontation!!!! Teresa wanting to keep Thomas by whatever means versus Rachel willing to drag Aris to freedom by the scruff if necessary. Rachel telling Thomas whatever she remembers from WCKD versus Teresa gatekeeping her memories to herself until the very last second and still using them to try and manipulate Thomas. Rachel being the same kind of outspoken, the same kind of stubborn, but her mind isn't as puzzle oriented as Thomas's, she couldn't see a way out, but if she had, she would've done the same thing he did. Teresa expecting support from Rachel as a fellow Elite and getting hit with a flat-out denial.

What would it have done for Thomas's mindset, hearing someone agreeing with him? Yeah, sure, the Gladers are on his side, they "forgive" him, but they also don't understand his full involvement, the guilt he feels. But Rachel does. She's just like him. She did the same things. He feels so much guilt for causing all this, not just the Maze but also the danger of bringing them out of it, into the Scorch with the Cranks and the Flare and all the other insane hazards. What would it have done if she had looked at him and said, "You made the right choice. I would have done the same thing. I'm glad you did what I couldn't."

And in the same vein, what would it have done for Teresa? They're the Elites. They're the best, the ones chosen to survive, to help the world. They're the four horsemen, riding together. But then it all falls apart for her. The three people who are supposed to be on her side aren't. The one person she wants to keep refuses her help, and the other two say he's right to do so. It could've been so tasty for her regression arc, because she'd dig her heels in all the harder, refuse to look at the data, won't acknowledge that she's the outlier, she's the aberration. It's them, it has to be them. The data is wrong, and WCKD is good.

and then book!Rachel 🥺 girlie was IN with the Icers (technically a title given to them by the movie verse but who cares) and fought with them to escape. they had way more survivors out of the Maze with her being one of the few casualties (forced friendly fire which is such BULLshit and overhand on WCKD’s part that is not how you play an experiment!!! that’s covering your bases and forcing your own confirmation biases BUT WHAT DO I KNOW)

and just OUGH 🫠 like if movie!Aris pressed more for Thomas to free Rachel, then plus we have gotten a chance to see her???? sure she’d be dead weight at first and run more of a risk of escape, but like once they’re all free, she’d be out in the Scorch with them. Aris wouldn’t feel as much as an outsider. AND maybe!!!! we’d get some more WCKD lore bc Teresa gatekept that shit even when her memories returned
