Its also a part of the racism of it all, but even on its own i think its also ignorance and stupidity that when White people protest against diversity in media, especially for historical settings, it's like people just assume that nobody before like 100 years ago traveled around, immigrated, and/or had kids with other ethnicities. They think everyone just stayed in their "own countries" (& the concept of countries & race within them is very modern & constantly changing but they ignore that too) & continents of origin the whole time & that immigration is something millions of people just randomly decided to do very recently.

But when it comes down to it, what they're actually mad about is that not everything is about them, because these same people will ALSO whine about games or films starring Native American characters set during a time period where there weren't that many White settlers yet set in.... "jack drake is a bad father" "jack drake is a good father" both of these are so reductive. jack drake is chuck dixon (a conservative fuckwad)'s idea of a good father, which means he is wrapped in layers of toxic masculinity and emotional incompetence despite the fact that he does clearly love his son. he is not intended to be read as a bad father, but there are several instances of him reacting to tim with anger that borders on physical violence (such as ripping out tim's tv when he thinks tim isn't paying enough attention to him in conversation), refusing to actually listen to anything tim says (everything about the ari situation), and having no interest in actually listening to anything tim says because his first priority is punishing tim for being out of line first and foremost (the way he talks to dana about boarding schools).

chuck dixon is uncritical of this as a style of parenting, because chuck dixon is a conservative man with conservative ideals about parenting, and this is a style of parenting wrapped up in conservative ideals of the father as the authoritarian head of the family unit. this does not mean that jack drake is a perfect dad OR that he's an irredeemably evil one. it does mean that jack drake's parenting is extremely flawed despite that he loves his son, that the narrative does not address his flaws in parenting as flaws, and that ultimately dissecting his parenting and its impact on tim is up to reader interpretation. but going "he loved tim and he was trying so you can't call him a bad dad" is just as reductive as "evil horrible abuser who hates his son and beats him senseless and locks him in a dishwasher" or whatever the hell.

If ford accidentally fell into the portal during the incident instead of fiddleford it doesn't work as well because ford is the type of freak who would think bill's exoskeleton was super cool. It's not a deal breaker for him.

One of my favorite things about That Scene in ep6 was how the arrival of SecUnit clearly DOES make Gurathin feel safer. Because he immediately gets angry.

Like, he had to be pissed before, on some level. Especially when the person in front of him confessed to (as far as she knew) murdering Mensah. No way some part of him wasn't screaming for revenge. But all he showed externally was fear, grief, shock. Because those passive, even submissive reactions are the only acceptable ones he's ever been allowed to show in a situation like this, I'll bet on it.

But the second Murderbot steps into the room and eliminates the threat, he goes off on it. And like, it's darkly funny on a lot of levels, yes, but also a sign that the terror's let up enough that he's 'allowed' to show anger. Whoever LBB represented to him that he was afraid to even look her in the eye, Murderbot clearly doesn't fall into the same category. He yells at it. Thank god, my man is yelling, he's gonna be ok.
