As someone who's very conscious of individual fundraising, between my job and my work with Radio Free Monday, I'm seeing an uptick lately in something that I want to talk about. But it's sensitive, so I'm asking you all to read this in the spirit of help, and understand that any negative tone you take away from this is not my intention.
We live in communities: neighborhood, friends groups, workplaces, fandoms. Part of the point of community is that we help others in that community. But there's an aversion to the idea of non-reciprocal aid, of accepting financial help that won't be repaid. And on the one hand I understand; nobody wants to be perceived as a freeloader. But I don't think we can move past the idea of transactive relationships, an ultimately capitalist idea of how we relate to others, until we stop stigmatizing it, even when we're the beneficiaries of it.
I see a lot of "normally I would never ask for help" and "I hate to ask for money" and "I'd rather die than accept charity but" and I'm sure that's true. But...you don't need to say it.
If someone is inclined to give, it doesn't matter. If someone isn't inclined to give, it doesn't help. Charitable giving on the individual level is not a sales situation. There is no magic combination of words that will induce someone to give if they weren't going to. And the more we protest that normally we wouldn't accept, the more we loudly imply that there is shame in asking, the longer it will take us to achieve a compassionate and supportive society.
And also, frankly, you're making other people feel like shit for asking too. Which I know is not something anyone wants.
If you need to ask for money that sucks and I'm sorry. I've been there and it's a real bind to be in. But I also know that in those situations energy is short, and this is one less thing to expend energy on -- instead of protesting your aversion to asking, put that energy into doing one thing to make it easier for folks to give -- make your payment app username a hyperlink or a QR code, or make a carrd with your giving options and link that.
Instead of "I would never ask for money normally" say "I know there are many kind people out there who will see this." Instead of "I hate to make this post" say "You all understand how difficult life can get." The nonprofit world has done a lot of studying of what makes people give, and positivity is a huge aspect of it. Opening with a negative, particularly a negative that people see constantly in other solicitations, is more likely to hurt your chances than to help.
Don't follow a script that continues to debase and abuse you. Mainly because it's not actually helping; there's no upside to prostrating yourself before an imaginary combative donor. Talk to the people who are actually likely to give, who recognize themselves in your words when you talk about kindness and compassion and who don't need you to shame yourself in order to be worthy of support. This is not to scold or shame anyone further, but to offer an alternative that is kinder to you and more helpful to the people who want to help.
Do yourselves and your fellow sufferers the kindness of dignity; lord knows you've had enough unkindness already.

There were not many but Acolyte cosplayers were indeed in attendance. Sunday was the big say for us Acolytes as Manny Jacinto was doing a panel (Albeit about another show he was on-The Good Place-with a fellow co-star) which I attended, it was awesome! But the real highlight was going to the Acolyte panel that was also being held that day. I was worried that the panel might be a roast of the show or that hecklers might show up or that I was going to be the only one there. But no, I'd say at least 25 people showed up and all of them were stelwart fans. The panel was a plot rundown of the show mind you, the panelists were trying to keep it spoiler free. Which, was kind of pointless as everyone there had already seen the show. One of the panelists was interesting because she said that even though she did not hate the show, she had beef with it. She did not get a chance to explain what that beef was (the hour we had flew by so fast) but after listening to all those in attendance, she actually said we might have just changed her mind for the better. The real treat was just being able to be around so many other fans of the show, in person no less, I was even able to get up and give a pitch for the campaign to save the show. I passed out a bunch of QR codes for the petition. Each with the hope that it will be passed on to others. The panelists didn't even know about the campaign. They were especially impressed when I told them that there had even been billboards in time square pushing for the show's renewal. but overall, just being in the presence of so many fans was like taking a bath in pure positivity. throughout the weekend, I was able to converse with people and the consensus was that the Acolyte is a good show and does deserve a second chance. It's just a shame that there is so much toxicity in the fandom, that studios always seem to bend to it and Star Wars is nothing but a cash grab for Disney. The state of streaming services also deserves some of the blame as well as they keep cancelling good shows just because said show did not become an overnight success. Then streaming services wonder why audiences are so disenchanted and less willing to give other shows a chance. It's so silly. So yeah, it was great to be able to talk to people in person and get some honest to goodness discourse.

i mean the one problem is that is that idk how they'd make the select-a-coin+ yo-kai in 2 work and if i can't get buchinyan then i will riot.
i think that they should remake 2 and 3 and translate 1 for switch and put them all in a collection together so then they can localize 4 without any issue of people not having played the games. and also because it'd be pog.
#puppy rambles#yo-kai watch#how do qr code yo-kai work in 1 for switch. is it through nfc or smth#how does pandanoko work??? or wayfarer manor in general for that matter-#kinda irrelevant but tbh i feel like the only reason a fan translation of 1 for switch doesn't exist other than the fandom being small#is cuz some of the textboxes have voice lines like in 3 and i don't think katie has enough voice lines hghgghffgfg-#i mean if you account for the anime and cutscenes she probably does#but i feel like going through to find them all is way more effort than it's worth#will probably exist eventually though assuming we don't get it officially. wouldn't be that hard tbh#you can just port the script and english audio. i mean idk how that stuff works but i imagine it wouldn't be too difficult#best case scenario though we get it legitimately which i feel like we probably will. even if we don't get 2 or 3 on switch i'd be happy#2 and 3 are already great after all. 1 is too but it's uh. less great-

This is a series of Mock covers made for the mammoth of a fic by debsthesnapeslytherinfan avaliable on fanfiction.Net and A03. They are a true pillar of the hp fandom to me and we're my introduction to snarry (as seen here) and to severitus. The aithor remains one of the best I have seen that explores the problematic nature of the age gap. I still remember reading their work on fanfiction.Net when I was younger and they only had a few still updating fics versus the whole bookcase worth of words they have been kind enough to gift to the fandom.
This fic is called willing and I have done 4 volume covers using the stunning @severus-simp who has blanket permission on their blog for their art to be utilised in such work as long as official citation is provided. They do some absolutely amazing artwork for the snarry fandom and I knew as soon as I saw it that I wanted to use it for some of the authors work. Due to how gorgeous the work is I wanted to keep the rest of it super basic and simple to not take away from the art so I only added ink splatters and fic info. The only real change I made was to Snapes wand to his hand and a dagger to Harrys in one of the mock covers.
The time itself taken on these cover was aproximatly 45 minutes to an hour and more time was spent rereading the fic to have a quote for each volume to go on the back cover of the mock ups than designing. A nice use of time for sure that I sent my work commute reading!
The back has a self made summary for each seperate volume (other than the first summary), a quote and fic information at the bottom. I screenshot the A03 symbols and cropped and enhanced them. The qr code links to the fic and at the bottom is a bunch of the fic info including where I would seperate in into different volumes. Ink splatters were also used here. I chose a more refined font in reference to Severus and then a less refined one in reference to Harry.
Keep fanfic free.

I’ll just say this now… I have no idea what I’m doing. Like, legitimately, I’m an anime-only watcher and am on… like… chapter six of the manhwa.
____________________________________________________________________________
When you woke up, the other side of the bed was cold.
You curl in on yourself, pulling the blankets closer as you bury your nose in the other pillow.
His smell is starting to fade…
It took a tremendous amount of effort to get yourself out of bed, but you managed to do it.
You even manage to shower and eat something for the first time in days. The hot water cascades down your back, and on autopilot, you shampoo and condition your hair, scrub your body, and even shave. But after your shower, you realize you have used Byung-Gyu’s shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The scent of peppermint and eucalyptus surrounds you, and as you should’ve guessed, you feel tears pricking the corners of your eyes. But they don’t fall.
They never fall.
The apartment is cold when you step out of the steamy bathroom. Gooseflesh immediately pebbles on your arms and legs as you wrap the towel tighter around your body and head back into the connected bedroom.
The walk-in closet smells of dust as you flick on the lights, and you stare at his side of the closet. T-shirts and button-downs are pressed neatly on their hangers, and his trousers are folded over in his dresser. A very fine layer of dust covers his usually shiny dress shoes.
You rifle through your own dresser and pull out a pair of jeans before pulling a button-down from his side and slipping it over your head. The smell of peppermint and eucalyptus envelopes you. You tuck the hem into your jeans and slip on the first pair of shoes you find on your side of the closet.
Just then, right at five o’clock in the afternoon, there’s a knock at the front door.
Your eyes are heavy with tears as you open the door to find Baek Yoon-Ho standing before you. His eyes soften when he realizes exactly what shirt you have on. Your fist your fingers in the front of the shirt, and wait for him to speak.
“You ready?” He asks, and you nod silently. You grab your wallet and keys and follow the S-Rank Hunter down the stairs of the apartment complex to where his car is waiting.
The car ride is just as silent as you watch the world pass by from the rush hour traffic. Yoon-ho tries to make conversation. He really does. But Byung-Gyu was the one who kept conversations alive. The mere thought of your husband made tears well up, and you sniffed, wiping your nose with a handkerchief you kept in your pocket. But they don’t fall.
They never fall.
Yoon-ho puts his hand on your knee, not in a creepy or perverse way, but in a… comforting way. Like he understood what you were going through. Because he did. Of course, he knew, he was there when Byung-Gyu died.
“We’re almost there,” Yoon-ho reassures you, and you just nod,
“Right.” You mumble, twisting your ring around your finger.
The bar and grill is quiet-ish. There are a few patrons, some at the booths, some at the bar, and some mingling outside on the patio. But you don’t recognize anyone.
Just how you liked it nowadays.
Baek ushers you to a booth while he goes up to the bar to order your food and drinks. You pull your phone from your pocket and turn it on. Your home screen—Byung-Gyu and you when he proposed—stares back at you.
You turn it off and just pick at the peeling QR code on the table to pay the bill when you’re done.
Someone you don’t recognize immediately slips into the booth across from you.
He’s tall, with dark hair and dark eyes, wearing a long coat, a white t-shirt, and dark wash jeans as he studies your solemn expression. He says your name, and your eyes narrow the barest bit.
“Who’s asking?” You snap, and it is then that Yoon-ho comes back, setting a tray of food and drinks on your table.
“Ah, Hunter Sung, you made it.” He says, your eyes darting back to the mysterious man in shock.
So this was the country’s tenth S-Rank…
And—
“You’re the one who saved the hunters on Jeju Island.” You say, almost in awe and with the most emotion that you’d felt in weeks. Sung nods, eyes filled with a flicker of confusion.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think we’ve met before. Hunter Baek told me your name but nothing else.” He said, and you offered a sad sort of smile,
“Byung-Gyu was my husband.” You say, and his eyes barely widen and fill with recognition.
“I asked them to come. You said you had something for them.” Yoon-ho said, and you frowned,
“What do you mean?” You ask, and Sung reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out an envelope. Your name is written in unfamiliar handwriting that must be his own. He reaches across the table and hands it to you. You open the envelope with tentative hands and tip the contents into your waiting hand.
Only to gasp when it hits your palm.
A ring, just as shiny as the day you put it on Byung-Gyu’s finger, gleamed in the light of the bar. For the umpteenth time that day, you began to cry. Only this time, you couldn’t stop the tears. They dripped down your chin, hot and sticky but very much cathartic.
You dissolved into a sobbing mess, deep, heaving sobs erupting as you tried not to break completely.
Sung looks on in a sort of pity, Yoon-ho rubbing your back.
“I thought this was lost. They said they couldn’t find it.” You choked out, ragged gasps taking up any air you managed to inhale. A lump in your throat made it difficult to breathe around the cries. People were starting to stare, but you couldn’t bring yourself to care about that.
“It was lost in the fight with how he was injured. He wasn’t wearing it when he died.” Sung explained, and you nodded,
“He always took it off for raids.” You said. Sung hummed in response as if this made sense.
“How did you find it?” You ask eventually and slip it on your finger next to your own ring. It was large on your finger, but you didn’t care. You could always find a chain to put it on later. Sung shrugged,
“I have summoning magic. I had one of my summons find it.” He said as if this explained everything.
It didn’t… But you could press Yoon-ho for answers later.
“Thank you… Thank you!” You lunge across the table and wrap your arms around his shoulders, pulling him into the first hug you had initiated since Byung-Gyu died.
He stiffens, but you don’t let up until your tears dry.
And… with the ring on your finger… Byung-Gyu feels just a little closer than before.
Maybe he would even be proud of you.

I just found out about another Gravity Falls zine that recently finished! From what I can tell, it was from the Russian community and only through the website VK? vk.com/zinebefa It's the same zine that these three illustrations were for: twitter qoolk_is_cool/status/1938259354962043067 twitter SharleneHopes/status/1938358345993224419 twitter eezjik/status/1938120316825571824 I don't know if there's a digital version. On the bright side, I live in the US and was able to download VK's mobile app through google's playstore and make an account with my US phone number just fine. I logged into the website on my desktop pc afterwards by scanning a qr code on the page with my phone. I'm not sure what your thoughts are on trying to archive non-EN zines as well, and I have no idea what other ones might be out there for Gravity Falls, but I figure that since I recognize some additional known EN fandom artists among their contributors (like SamFannar and cherryviolets), it might be reachable for you!
Oh wow, thank you so much for letting me know about this. Looked into that zine on the VK page and it's pretty cool looking. Seems the page was originally for a Good Omens fanzine and then became a GF zine project.
The art for it is amazing. The Russian Gravity Falls fandom is full of so many amazingly talented people and is still so underrated in the English fandom. I've always wanted to dive deeper into that part of the community one day. There always seems like there's something cool going on with GF fans in Russia. In a lot of ways, they seem to care about Gravity Falls more than Disney ever has (then again, we all probably care about GF more than the mouse).
I have looked into some non English fanzines to archive, such as a few Japanese zines that I was told about, but those ended up being more so comic compilation books by individual artists instead of a zine project and others had some...not really PG content in them if you get what I mean. I'm only really after SFW fanzines to archive for obvious reasons. This one of course looks to be a zine that is totally safe and worth archiving.
My rules for zine archival basically are that the zine needs to be fully completed and has no prospects of ever being sold again. Given many of these zines are charity projects, I obviously don't wanna freely make available something that is still being used to make money for a good cause. Hence why, although I bought a copy of it years back, I'm not gonna be releasing a download of the old Wayfaring Strangers zine, as the team behind it still makes it available to buy every now and then. Other zines like Epilogue or Summer Memories of course are fair game as they're long over projects that never again will be sold. So for zines like that, archiving is beyond important.
As for this zine, given there are some names attached to it that I know like Cherryviolets, I might ask Cherry about it and see if there's a digital copy of the zine that can be shared, if the project is completed that is. Of course, if there's anyone who did buy that fanzine and has a copy to share, please either get in touch or publish it somewhere anyone can access it like the Internet Archive. If I find it and get permission to do so, I will of course publish it to my IA page without question.
I strongly believe all Gravity Falls fans should have free access to these fanzines once they are finished, as a means to preserve and archive them. What's the point of gatekeeping these things long after they are finished and never to be sold again? I want new fans to enjoy these as much as old fans who bought them did. And that's why I do the archiving work that I've been doing.
The internet isn't as permanent as people tell you. Media goes lost every single day. And if no one is archiving this stuff or trying to find the people who have them, then it's lost forever. Being a data hoarder in this day and age is not only good but should be more encouraged. There is always a chance that one day, something you saved off the internet years ago and is sitting in a forgotten drive, is something someone else has spent years trying to track down. Lost Media cases often come down to the right person saving the right thing and being able to find out and share what they got.
Hopefully this zine is out there too. Cause I would hate to see this become lost media.

this post is just some info on yesterday's DA:TV Fandom party at SDCC. :>
What was this party? [Here] is a post with the pre-event information that was made available. [Here] is a pre-event article that contains an interview with the organizer. And [this article] on the event contains some additional information, like on the versions of this party held in previous years, which helps for context. There was no new DA:TV information of note from the party
Links to Fandom (the company's) Twitter account, their Instagram. If you look at these (including on the Instagram Stories), you can see some pictures and stuff from the party. for those interested in watching a video version of some of these, Ghil Dirthalen posted a video recording that she made last night of Fandom the company's Instagram posts [here]. there are also more pictures and stuff from the party that you can see if you click through to [some of] the source links below here in the rest of this post.
As was previously reported the other week, Jason Derulo headlined the party (like as in a gig). Here's an image of him there [source] (the him singing DA stuff part was a joke tho btw hh). They considered having an orchestra because of DA's musical score but they got Jason Derulo
One of the party props was a big background of the DA:TV key art [source]. Here you can see the DA:TV logo on another backdrop. [source] This tweet contains both of these backdrops from a different angle
There was also an archway prop based on this DA:TV key art, and big screens which projected images from the game (including of Varric and this screenshot) [source]. It looks like these images were also projected to television screens? [source]
This tweet contains the questions and the answers to the DA-themed scavenger hunt (transcription of this at the end of this post), as well as a partial look at the map layout of the party
This is how photos taken in the DA themed photo booth look (this DA:TV screenshot was the backdrop) [source]
There was a VIP section at the party [source]. Gary McKay, the General Manager of BioWare, was there [source], as were John Epler and Zach Mendez (Lucanis) [source], Ali Hillis (Harding) [source], Nick Boraine (Emmrich) [source], Kari a BioWare Brand Director [source], Jessica Clark (Neve) [source] and Corinne Busche [source]. Erika Ishii (Rook) also visited but got kicked out of VIP hh [source]. Some cosplayers from the DA community were also personally invited by BioWare & PR at EA Games and attended! like Ladytoxie as Bellara ^^ [source, two], and some celebrities also, such as Doug Jones [source]
Ladytoxie mentioned that they will be posting a Vlog of their experience and coverage of the event, "probably next week" [source], having documented it at the time [source] (tysm!!)
Ladytoxie reported that it was a good, memorable experience and that everyone was lovely [source]
There was supposed to be some DA:TV-related pins and lanyards being handed out at the party, but these got stuck at customs, so there wasn't any goodies being handed out [source]
Links to some more images from the party: [one], [two], [three]
Scavenger hunt text (questions and answers) transcription:

what happened to the fandom wiki?
Hey! So I'm not dead (I got sick because of my pollen allergies and attended a con, among other things) and I'm back to posting BTD and other fandom content I like! ^_^
As the title says, I'm curious if anyone knows what happend to the old BTD fandom wiki. I knew one existed before but is now gone. I also know the Miraheze BTD wiki currently exists but it's really lackluster in content compared to any other wiki I've seen (a image in Ren's page is literally just a QR code for some reason?? and there's a lot of missing image links and even whole pages). IDK if there was some drama regarding the fandom wiki specifically and as a reletively new fan to the scene (i.e early May 2025), I'd like to know more about it! I was thinking about making some sort masterpost/wiki thing, mostly for Ren, Strade, Lawrence, TPOF, TINR, and basically any Gatobob content related to the series since that's what I want to record and archive the most.
Any and all inquiries are welcome!
EDIT 17/06/25: I guessing the main reason why the fandom wiki got nuked was because of the "Don't post p0rn, shock images, or other disturbing content" guidelines, but that's just a guess since I wasn't there to see what could've caused it to be deleted.

World Champions | Artwork for World Champions by TheDefenestrator by TheDefenestrator, art by Blurb_brain
Fandom: The King's Avatar | 全职高手
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Category: Gen

At the end of season 4 of the Glory Pro Alliance, the government finally receives the information it has been waiting for: The other players have caught up. Or, In which Glory has been a government recruitment ploy for remote-piloted mecha operators all along.
About the Book
FONTS: Mundo Serif, Azonix [dafont], Segoe UI Symbol
IMAGES: Illustration by Blurb_brain [AO3]; cover image by NASA ID: 440611 [Rawpixel]; Planet Earth background ID: 6331593 [Rawpixel]; Circuit lines background ID: 3117935 [Rawpixel]; endpapers' image by Eric Eastman [Unsplash]; Swoksaar, Desert Dust, Lord Grim, Vaccaria, and Cloud Piercer [The King's Avatar Wikia]
MATERIALS: regular printer paper (8.5"x11", 96 bright, 20lb), 80pt bookboard, Iris Bookcloth (colour: Black Pearl), Neenah cardstock (8.5"x11", bright white, 65lb), waxed linen thread (white, 30/3 size), embroidery floss (shades 3750, 350, 3845, 370), leather cording (1.9mm diameter), Reeves’ acrylic paint (Mars Black, Phthalo Blue, Titanum White), Americana acrylic paint (glow in the dark), ph neutral pva glue (Books by Hand)
PROGRAMS USED: Typeset in Affinity Publisher, cover/title page/endpapers designed in Affinity Designer/Photo, QR codes generated with LibreOffice Writer, PDF arranged for printing with Bookbinder-JS
BINDING STYLE: quarto, case bound (slightly rounded, with oxford hollow, forgot to use tapes)
.
Fenes' "Glory's tech isn't handwaved" AU. This was great! Funny and creative, and I'm both amazed and full of admiration for Fenes' ability to juggle so many characters.
I was feeling excited and ambitious with this one. Tried some new fun things (double core endbands, painted edges) and used some new equipment (a lying press).
The Text
TITLE/HEADINGS FONT: Azonix says 'SciFi' to me, it's a bold, non-serif, sleek font.
BODY FONT: Mundo Serif, it's a decent serif body font I haven't used before. Felt like it worked with Azonix.
SCENE BREAKS: a special character in Segoe UI Symbol of a black & white icon of Earth, the globe showing Asia.
TYPESETTING: Finished typesetting the fic, left document open on my laptop, laptop's battery failed, file now crashes immediately upon reopening, issue persists with copied versions of file (; ̄Д ̄) . Thankfully I had a backup file for the typeset with the barebones of the text, so I didn't have to restart from scratch...
Title Page
My thinking: it takes place in space, the world's at stake, and it's the dawn of a new horizon for Earth. Glory and the titular champions are represented by Swoksaar, Desert Dust, Lord Grim, Vaccaria, and Cloud Piercer – the captains of what I'd call the 'big 5' teams. A circuitry board background element hints at the tech/mecha nature of the story's competition. It may not match Blurb's art, but I hope I was able to convey some of what the story is about.
The circuitry image is used as decoration throughout the book. I only used the avatars of the top five teams' captains because too many silhouettes would lessen their impact and readability. (Removing the backgrounds was tedious, but worth it.)
Here's what it should have looked like. The test prints for this and the BB art were fine, but I think my inkjet started running out of ink just when I printed the final copies and I didn't reprint them. (Too impatient, really wanted to finish up and read the book)
The Cover
World Champions is another Big Bang fic, and once again I based some of my design choices off of the accompanying artwork. The dominant colours of Blurb_brain's illustration are red and blue-green.
COVER PAPER: For the decorative cover material I used NASA's ASTER image of Poyang Lake. NASA has some really interesting photography some of which remind me of marbled paper, thought it could be interesting. I chose this image of Poyang Lake because 1) it's in China, 2) the colours were similar to Blurb's awesome illustration (fate strikes again, dropping matching images and artwork into my lap!), and 3) NASA is tangentially relevant to the fic, which takes place in space.
BOOKCLOTH: Verona bookcloth in the shade Black Pearl, a lovely dark navy blue colour. Thought it suited the cover paper and title page. (Bought it for this fic specifically, but the colour goes well with almost all of my decorative papers so it should see a lot of use in the future!)
Endpapers
The final decision that held this project at a standstill for two months. In the end I drew inspiration from the matchups against the final opponent in the story. The image I used is a little chaotic and a little too unrelated to identify why I picked it without an explanation, but this book is for me and I know why, so there. (Note that I played around with the colours and cropped the photo.)
Endpaper inspiration: the maps for the matches against the Infilhites
"a long bridge through an enormous tube-like hall, where light seem to come from every side through stained glass windows. It was visually confusing, limited lateral motion" "a warehouse, crates stacked on and beside metal racks that went all the way to the ceiling." "a house of mirrors, fully enclosed to be sure the Infhillte couldn’t fly out of it." "like a volcano, rivers of lava moving sluggishly down a slope, occasional vents of overheated air nearby." "a series of overlapping bridges between halls and stairways, level after level layered over an open abyss."
Trimming & Painting the Edges
Going all out, a 2-for1 deal: the opportunity to use my lying press for the first time and learn a new technique!
TRIMMING: Used a paring chisel and lying press.
CHISEL: The 1.25" wide paring chisel I used was form a modern manufacturer. (Vintage paring chisels are very thin, enough so that you can bend/flex the blade. But don't do that.) It's long and wide blade made it easier to register against the surface of the press for consistent cuts. Looks like this one below from Lee Valley.

LYING PRESS: My dad's project. Solid black walnut, hand carved screws and internal threads — he even made the tools to make the threads too! The jaws of the press are each 3 7/8" wide. It's big and heavy (though much smaller than full-sized professional ones omg), but there's enough of a flat surface to register the chisel against. A thicc boi, much like this one below from Bookbinding Supplies.

PAINTED EDGES: The idea was to have dark navy edges, speckled with white stars. I used acrylic from a tube to paint the edges — tutorials recommended it over liquid bottled acrylic, and I had an old set hanging around. Had to water it down because otherwise the paint just flaked off.
My test of trimming and painting went well. Then the trimmed book itself came out slightly crooked, the paint required significantly more watering-down than before, and the white paint did not want to be both opaque and speckle-able. Unfortunate, but still book-shaped! And now I have an idea of what to do differently next time.
Also, did not like the glow-in-the-dark paint. Looked too translucent in the light when compared to the white acrylic, and needed a thicker coat to be visible in the dark. (The thickness combined with the translucence and base colour kinda reminded me of boogers... Ended up scrapping most of it off, so there's not much left to glow.)
Endbands
Still in the mood to have fun and go all-out, I attempted double-core endbands for the first time.
TUTORIAL: YouTube @ BookbindersChronicle: Bookbinding 101 Sewing Headbands Session 2. Also watched @ DAS Bookbinding's Double-Core Endband // Adventures in Bookbinding, but I personally found Chronicle's closeup video easier to follow.
I used embroidery floss from a 100pk of assorted colours off Amazon, wrapped around a core of 1.9mm leather cording from Michaels. I drew from Blurb_brain's art for the general colours, choosing a dark base, with red, blue-green, and gold. The specific shades were picked to go with the cover.

i apologize in advance if this ask sounds kinda weird, but i'm kinda curious to hear your thoughts on how the narrative treats qi rong, mostly because i think interacting only with the eng version/fandom might take some context from his character. i've seen people complaining that some fans woobify him too much, others complaining that some people treat him as a pure hate-sink when he's more than that. while i do think he's a multi-layered character, i do sometimes get the feeling that mxtx did not go easy on him, with the revised version being even crazier than before (some even say he was given a bit of onesided incestuous subtext with xl, but i wonder if that interpretation isn't just the result of weirdly translated lines in eng). i think this might be because he strikes me as a meta personification of sorts for toxic fans who place their identity and self-worth on just one person they completely idolize, and when that person is shown to be imperfect they immediately turn against them, and we know mxtx has had experience with those kinds of people.
i do think he's largely meant to be seen as unsympathetic overall, though i think there's strong nuances with his character as well. since his childhood he always lacked something and never really had a well formed identity, his prince name being symbolic of his life. he projected himself onto xl in life, and he kept on absorving the worst traits of the people around his life without really understanding them in order to feel powerful and important, from the xianle nobles to the signature traits of the other calamities. he also strikes me as very... "little brother"-coded, in the sense that he keeps looking for any sort of recognition and seems unable to mature. even when he hates xl i think he still somewhat craves his attention, and qr only developed a bit when he was forced to let go of this role by accidentally becoming a father instead. i think it's also interesting that he started out a lot like his father, but ended up sharing the fate of his mother.
i do wonder how the cn fandom views him and if he's nearly as divisive as he is here. i'd also be pretty interested in seeing some meta about him from cn fans. again, it feels like some context is missing by not speaking the language the book was originally written in...
Hi! I think the narrative basically takes the same stance as Xie Lian in its attitude towards Qi Rong, which is the sort of "I can't love you but I don't want to hate you, the best I could give you is indifference". I agree that Qi Rong isn't meant to be lovable, but MXTX isn't dismissive of him as a character either - she devoted almost an entire chapter to Qi Rong's death, let him speak his mind, and gave him some form of closure.
Qi Rong having onesided incestuous subtext with XL (!!) in the revised version is...very interesting haha, I haven't read the revised version so I can't know (someone please tell me where to get the revised version ><). Although I want to speculate that even if there is some incestuous vibes, it's not truly sexual - it's probably libido directed the wrong way when you're lusting over someone else's identity, but not over that person per se. Qi Rong lusts over XL's identity in the sense that he wants to be XL - or rather he wants to be perfect, worshipped, all-powerful etc. (bit of digression, there's an underrated psychological thriller called Cracks starring Eva Green, if you watch it you'll know what I mean)
I don't have the impression that he's truly divisive in the Chinese fandom, but then I don't engage with the Chinese fandom that much so I could totally be wrong. And I don't think any context is missing for English readers either (except maybe the humour of QR's obscene language might be lost in translation?) because human nature is the same everywhere, and Qi Rong's distorted psyche is more a matter of human nature than cultural context.
As for Chinese fandom's view of QR, there's this great meta I translated and posted a few days ago, and I found some other opinion pieces about Qi Rong on Zhihu (Chinese equivalent of Reddit), as you'll see they're quite diverse.
A lot of Chinese readers say that what stands out most about Qi Rong is his comedic role in the story because his cursing and name-calling are really funny; a lot of people also mention being really touched by his self-sacrifice to save Guzi. I found this one post that has a similar view to yours, which is QR represents MXTX's toxic fans:
"I always felt it's the author admonishing her fans in an implicit way not to be as crazy as Qi Rong [...] My guess is that the author can't ask her fans outright not to act in this way because that would hurt people who support her but are immature, however she can't turn a blind eye to these people going around provoking more resentment, so she creates QR to remind her fans not to be like QR, or they'd appear as unlikable as QR to the public. But the author still feels symathy for thse fans, so she didn't depict their representation in the novel as totally incorrigible - QR retains some humanity and is a little adorable when he starts to care about people."
I also saw opinions about the narrative (or rather Xie Lian) not going easy on Qi Rong, like this one:
"Xie Lian is clearly a very good person but why is he so heartless to QR? He eventually treated QR as a joke and a burden, but QR was once a true follower of his. At first I thought XL was perfect and cares about everyone, but he never really cared for his cousin. When I read that XL felt neither joy nor sorrow when QR died saving Guzi, my heart chilled. If XL could forgive the masses who betrayed and reviled him, why can't he forgive his cousin who once followed him whole-heartedly?"
There're also people saying that Qi Rong's potential divisiveness is what makes him a great villain, like this post:
"What MXTX's well-received villains have in common is a tragic childhood and not being loved growing up, and they only have a soft spot for one person. Although these villains did horrible deeds and are unrepentant, they all reserve some kindness in their heart for the only person who's good to them. This contrast is striking and touching, yet most likely to cause controversy. Therefore, MXTX knows very clearly how to create a memorable villain, and I admire that."
Someone else says when they read about Qi Rong they "don't know whether to laugh or cry" (XL's signature emotion hehe). They add that "this is where MXTX is successful in writing a villain - you both hate and pity him; he's infuriating, but you don't really want to see him die either."
Another view is that since Qi Rong has no filter, he sometimes serves as the truth-telling voice. For example, when XL wanted to keep Lang Qianqiu in the dark about the truth of the Gilded Banquet Massacre, Qi Rong blurted out the truth.
There's also a question posted on Zhihu that asks why people like Qi Rong, and there're some interesting answers. There's one post that says "I find him attractive because he's depicted as alluringly ghostly in a lot of fan art like vampires in Twilight" haha
Another post says they like Qi Rong "because he's guilelessly wicked, while XL and Hua Cheng are hypocrites" emmmmm
Another one says they like Qi Rong because "being Xie Lian is exhausting, he's so wronged but he just endures it all, while Qi Rong just launches verbal assults whenever someone rubs him the wrong way, it's so cathartic. The most difficult thing in the world is to be a good person, because as soon as you do one thing wrong, everyone criticises you; but if you're a bad person, even if you did just one good thing, everyone praises you for it and shows you pity".

I just finished playing Steelrising!
And I gotta say...
I'm disappointed in the lack of fanart and fanfiction!!! Like WHAT!!! The game has such a cool story! Taking a real-life event and adding clockwork robots! (can we do that with everything please...)
And there's only Four fanfictions on Ao3?! FOUR! One isn't from the same fandom, and the other isn't in English! So TWO!
AGH!! I can't live like this!
And have you seen the fandom wiki? BARE BONES! Not even the main story is up there!
I don't normally rant like this but for a game this beautiful not to get proper recognition drives me bonkers!
All that I have had to feed my need for more Steelrising was concept art (which I've only found a few on Artstation (they are GORGEOUS)), and the game itself (which I've already platinumed as it is so short).
I don't know what to do, and I'm not ready to move on. So I've made fanart. Expect more.
Also the soundtrack is nowhere!! I had to go to the dev's website and use a QR code to TASTE the individual tracks! Okay, rant is done.
#steelrising#digital art#fanart#obssessed#this took way too long#aegis#french revolution#but with robots#let it be known#someone please make fanfiction#or fanart#i will be eternally grateful

De Tocht Der Koeien \\ The Journey of Cows | MxCaptain

[ID: A hand-bound book shown from the front. There is gray bookcloth along the spine and black bookcloth on the front pasted on top of silver and black marbled paper. The title in both English (The Journey of Cows) and Dutch (De Tocht Der Koeien) is painted onto the cover in silver fabric paint, as well as the author name MxCaptain and a graphic of grass. /End ID]
As another gift as part of Fandom Trumps Hate 2023, I did a bind of MxCaptain's fic De Tocht Der Koeien and its English translation The Journey of Cows! Both fics are contained within this volume, one after the other.

[ID: A hand-bound book shown from the spine. The front cover can also be seen from an angle. There is gray bookcloth along the spine. The name in Dutch (De Tocht Der Koeien) and the author name, MxCaptain, are on the spine in silver fabric paint. /End ID]
The cover and spine are both stenciled with silver fabric paint, and the cover has black bookcloth glued atop black-and-gray hand-marbled paper (not marbled by myself). This is, like my previous book, a sewn board binding, and the ends of the boards are painted black.

[ID: Two images of the interior title pages of the book. The first shows the half-title page, which has both titles De Tocht Der Koeien and The Journey of Cows separated by a line and the author name, MxCaptain, beneath a graphic of a cabin. The second shows a two-page spread with a watercolor painting of a pine-tree-covered hill with some highland cows on it. The same titles can be seen on the righthand page, as well as the same author name. /End ID]
The half-title page precedes the title spread, which has a full-spread painting. The edges have been trimmed (very carefully, using a utility knife, which I only attempt with thin books like this one because it is generally very perilous to trim this way) to bring the book down to A6 size and to get the white space away from the edges of the spread.

[ID: Two images of interior pages of the book. The first image shows the front matter on the left and the summary page on the right. The front matter has QR codes with links to the fics, the Blue Skies Books logo with a bluejay, the Renegade Publishing logo with a bookpress, and information about the book. The summary page has the summary in Dutch and English as well as sketches of cows. The second image shows the chapter header on the righthand side. The chapter header has the English title, The Journey of Cows, encased within a woodcut print of cows, with the text of the fic beneath it. /End ID]
The summary page and chapter headers have some more public domain cow images from rawpixel, and I'm especially pleased with the chapter headers, which I think are very cute!
