One of the better resources I've seen when looking for phone apps to recommend is No-Bullshit Games, a curated list of Android/iOS games that are either free or low-cost and don't use dark patterns or extremely exploitative payment systems (more on the methodology here since it's pretty subjective).

The lists are separated by OS, and have other ways to sort including genre, rating, and cost.

my pet peeve this morning is how everyone on tiktok is treated as an influencer or an influencer in making for even the most simple of videos. like on a video of someone accidentally scaring their friend someone in the comments will be like "we HAVE to see the best friend now 🤣" no tf you dont? you don't HAVE to see anything. it's a funny video and now it's over. there's always this entitlement to "another video please!!!! another another!!!" and it'll be on someone's page that isn't trying to be entertaining for billions of people

Part 3 Entertainment - Apps Part 1

I can't imagine I'll have much in the way of apps for you, because the Google Play store is a pit of despair that you cannot browse, but if I come across something I think might be useful, I'll happily share it.

Any apps I'd profile here would have to be:

For Android (somewhat obviously)

Either free or low-cost (I'm willing to pay single digits for a game I already know that I like and will meet all of the other criteria on this list, but not really much more.)

Says it doesn't share data with third parties and collects and accesses no more data than is reasonable for the features that it has. (A game with payments does need to have access to certain things, as does a game that allows you take pictures).

Always plays offline or can be played offline. I don't about anyone else, but I've never been stuck waiting ANYWHERE with decent wifi. I'm always in the waiting room that has no connection.

The somewhat obvious way to go with something like this is to purchase the cell phone port of a game that was released for NES/SNES/Sega Genesis. I used the tail end of a Play giftcard to buy the cell phone port of Dragon Quest II (Apple), a game that I've played so many times that I don't need access to a walkthrough and cost me like 2.60 after using my gift card balance. I doubt that's of much interest to anyone besides me, though, but several other similar games have cell phone ports if you know of one you think you would enjoy.

This tumblr post, however, got me interested in Simon Tatham's Puzzles (Apple), which has 40 logic puzzles in a single app (the Apple version has 38, your guess is as good as mine), including Sudoku. Does it have the best graphics? No. Will it run when I have no cell reception? Yes.

I'm looking through some of the other suggestions in that thread and seeing if any other apps are worth mentioning.

This is just me screaming out into the Tumblr void but it really infuriates me seeing people talk about online that “there won’t be elections in 2026/2028” so I should not get my hopes up for any sort of future where America stops/leaves this fascist administration.

Am I not allowed to hold onto hope? This defeatist attitude is what the current administration WANTS, they want people to give up, to roll over and take it until something MAYBE changes. Why give into what they want me to feel? The current administration HATES how their every move has been watched, mostly due social media, even when they get something done, they’re still complaining about those who opposed it, who did not stop talking about, those who want to inform the people around them (and beyond) of the cruel, hateful, dehumanizing actions the current administration is committing.

An example is senator Mike Lee from Utah being forced to take the sale of public lands out of the Big Beautiful Bill, because ENOUGH people would not shut up about it, and it was enough for even his hateful self to notice and make a change, albeit begrudgingly.

(I’m not giving him any props for this, he’s mad that all eyes were on him and the sale of public lands. I am sure he, or someone else, will try to do this again and try to do it in a sneakier way.)

I want to ask those who push this defeatist rhetoric/idea online:

Have you done anything before conceding? Did you vote? Have you gone to any protests? Have you talked to the people around you, to see how they’re doing, how they’re dealing with everything around them?

If you said no to any of these (especially if you said no to all), you’re part of the problem, part of the current administration’s agenda, falling in line with their goal, watching the days go by and hoping for something BETTER to magically appear.

Something BETTER won’t magically appear, it has to be MADE, DEVELOPED. Voting won’t solve everything in America, a combination of coming together as a community, building up support, and saying FUCK NO to everything happening is needed. You cannot sit idly by and EXPECT things to get better. You must participate, you must invest in your’s and others’ futures to MAKE A CHANGE.

Look at Zohran Mamdani, do you think he won the NYC mayoral democratic primary because he was just sitting around? NO! He was out of the streets, meeting with the people of NYC. His supporters helped spread his message, his ideas, canvassing neighborhoods day after day. And they will continue to do this, as the NYC mayoral election is this November. Zohran Mamdani defied the odds once, will he do it again? Hopefully, and that’s something I can hold onto during these times.

I will also recognize that I should not be listening to the doomers online. What I see online isn’t always representative of reality, but feel like this defeatist attitude is something that needs addressed if any progress is to be made.
