For this week's episode of HEnabled, I sat down with the wonderful Maddy to discuss their experience of Higher Education.

Maddy has been studying part-time for a BSc (Honours) in Computing & IT and Business at the Open University since 2019, after Idiopathic Intercranial Hypertension forced them to change their life's trajectory. During Maddy's studies, they acquired an ADHD diagnosis, which deepened their understanding of themselves.

I don’t really post too much about my day job, but today I escorted just over 120 @universityofhertfordshire Biomedical students along to @watfordfcofficial for an #AssessmentCentre Experience Day. Its an opportunity for students to experience recruitment Assessment Centres in a realistic yet safe environment where a job isn’t directly on the line. For many this was the first time they’d experienced an #interview and assessment environment, it was great seeing them put through their paces and rising to the challenge! Working in #HigherEducation Employer Engagement I get some great opportunities like this but don’t always celebrate them as my focus outside of work is often on other projects. That being said I am very lucky to work for an institution like the University of Hertfordshire. Finally, a shout to @srs_sophie and her team at @smart_res who orgnaised and ran the day. Definitely worth a follow if this sort of thing interests you. Correspondence University Student

To all those fellow correspondence students out there. What do you think you struggle with the most? How do you get through your day? How do you plan?

UNIVERSITY

Ahhh...

University is already hard as is. Going to school, getting up for school, getting to school on time, going to work and studying. But I chose the correspondence route. So when everyone is out of school for reading weeks, breaks (especially summer) I’m still in school.

Gross I know.

I enrolled in a University that is all online. I thought it was a good idea, but now I’m torn. Was this a bad idea? How am I going to complete these courses? Am I insane? Should I just go to an “actual in school university?”

NO

Here’s why I chose to stay in online courses.

There are few deadlines.

Course end date. Usually 4 months. So you have to complete either 1-5 courses of your choosing (from your graduate guideline)

Complete your course work, midterms & exams before the end date.

I can do the course whenever I’m free.

There are schedules so if you need them they will help. (Or you can make your own)

If family situations happen, if you have to move, if you are struggling you can get an extension.

I can have a full time job without having to go around courses.

With regular school you have to plan work around school and vice versa. With correspondence you don’t.

You can chose to be full time or a part time student. (It might take longer to complete the course)

Here’s my schedule for next term! I’m only taking 9 hours as I find that best for balancing with working half-time and having a pretty significant chunk of time spent commuting each day.

My three courses are:

Introductory Statistics

Global Demography 

Environmental Health

I’ve scheduled in 26 hours of study per week, which is 2.89 hours per credit hour.
