2020. A make or break year. Who would have thought that we will be stuck indoors for such a long time having the virus hit not just a country but the whole world. It also badly hit lives in all continents. Despite the situation and the lockdown we were able to remain hopeful and able to continue life the way it is now, struggling but surviving. A dear friend told me that 2020 is the perfect vision, which is true, and this year gave us reason to look into how our lives are, gave us the time to look within us, gave us the opportunity to assess where we are heading and gave us the moment to connect and reconnect with the people who matters in our lives. VISION. CLARITY. I think, the mere message of 2020 is for us to see clearly our present given our past and envision our future well. 2021 is already in our doorstep and we must remain steadfast and resilient as we traverse the coming year. Keep what good values we have that made us stronger and the faith in Our Almighty Father that kept us living with good guidance. My take away is RESILIENCE, INNOVATION, HOPE and TO HAVE THE FIRM FAITH. As we close 2020 to move forward to 2021, let us be thankful for how the year was and what it brought us, be it good or bad. Let us keep the bond we have sealed, the ties we have strongly created and definitely the acquaintances we have had. A roller coaster it is but as how the ride goes, we had very good highs and the lows were far significant to impact us too. May the lessons from 2020 steer our 2021 well and good. On hypernormalisation

Watching Adam Curtis’s documentary “Hypernormalisation” I was drawn most by some similarities between the story the film was telling and the situation in Egypt for the past few years since the January 25th revolution. Telling the story of the financial crisis in the 1970s followed by the rise of individualism in the United States, Curtis describes the political activists who lived in New York City as depressed inhabitants of the city who just “didn’t try to change” reality but “just experienced it” in a sense of alienation and detachment. It instantly reminded me of how young Egyptian activists have been going through for the past two years. Despite being for other political reasons, one can feel the same sense of detachment where many just lost interest in changing the status quo or getting their voices represented amidst the overwhelming and extreme support of the current regime whose supporters alienate and attack any even slightly opposing views.

The other concept that applied to Egypt at many times was that of perception management, which Curtis states has been introduced by the United States in the 1980s. The same concept can be seen used by the Egyptian regime with Mohamed El Baradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and one of the most iconic political leaders who pushed for a change in 2010. After winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, El Baradei was celebrated in Egypt and awarded the Nile Order by President Mubarak. A few years later, a media war started against him, aiming at changing people’s perception of El Baradei from Egypt’s pride to the man who is the reason behind the US war and Iraq and the secret agent of the US in Egypt. The same tactics were used yet again as soon as El Baradei decided to step down in 2013 in light of the events taking place at the Rabaa sit-in. What strikes me is that how the exact same messaging was used to defame him in 2013, after they were all nulled by the same media after the January 25th revolution in 2011. But the key factor I found common between both cases, that shown in the documentary and that of ElBaradei, is that the media played on people’s ignorance and their laziness to look beyond the picture being drawn for them.
