'Sisi' was a terrible empress. Her romanticization needs to STOP.
In more recent decades, Elisabeth has received a growing attention in pop culture: there are several series, films and even a musical paying tribute to her legend. Her beauty is admired, her trials and tribulations are pitied, her struggle to escape the chafing constraints of royal life is celebrated. There's a whiff of feminism surrounding her lately - a strong, intelligent woman, metaphorically, and if we take the film Corsage, even literally flipping off the patriarchy. She's galloping through forests barefoot, she's facing off her tyrannical mother in law, she's fighting for her freedom, for control over her own life. German writer Karen Duve goes as far as to call Elisabeth "an undiscovered feminist icon."
But... was she? One of her ladies in waiting once said that Elisabeth will "live on in legend, not in history". And right she was. You see, Elisabeth has triumphed. When I look around, it seems as if we see her exactly as she would have wanted us to. A tragic heroine, a beautiful apparition, a nymph who somehow got trapped in the mortal realm, to her immense suffering. And for a modern woman,  there is much to empathize with in Elisabeth: her sublime sensitivity, her iron self-discipline, her headstrong character, her inborn thirst for freedom. But upon lifting the starry veil of this ethereal fairy-tale queen, one will find the face of a much more complex, flawed and ultimately human woman. Self-obsessed and narcissistic, monstrously selfish and possessive, cruelly indifferent to her empire (with one all-consuming exception), incessantly self-victimizing and deeply, deeply unhappy - overwhelmingly through her own fault.

Princess Aminah of Johor's Yellow Diamond Tiara
This tiara was made by Singapore based jeweler, Royal Insignia, for Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah to wear to her wedding in August 2017. It features a cushion cut yellow diamond along with pear, marquise, and emerald cut white diamonds set in white gold.
Tumblr media
Princess Aminah's father, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar of Johor, was sworn in as the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong aka King of Malaysia today so I hope to see this tiara worn more in the future.

Of course, this documentary is also part of the Palace’s PR operation to build a profile for the future monarch. Everyone is recorded saying what a great guy he is. The Prince is asked about the criticism that he has faced for taking on this particular subject, given his wealth and privilege and abundance of homes. He replies in carefully chosen soundbites while skirting the question, because there is really no satisfactory way for him to answer it. This programme is the best response he can give to those critics.

Yet, even Chapuys, who gives us this information, says earlier in the same letter that ‘there had been… talk of a new marriage for this king… which rumour agrees well with my own news from the court of France, where, according to letters [I have] received, courtiers maintain that this king has actually applied for the hand of Francis’ daughter’. Chapuys himself therefore does not connect up the rumours of a ‘new marriage’ with Jane Seymour. In early April, Jane was still little more than a lady whom the king was pursuing. At best, in accordance with the conventions of courtly love, she was the lady whom ‘he serves’ – a telling phrase. At worst, she was a passing fancy, whom Henry may have hoped to make his mistress. Chapuys certainly didn’t think much of Henry’s choice. He described Jane the day before Anne’s execution as ‘no great beauty’ and ‘not a woman of great wit’; he implied that she was unlikely to be a virgin, and reported that people said she was inclined ‘to be proud and haughty’. Yet, by this point, the world had changed, and with it, Henry’s intentions towards Jane. It is highly improbable that before Anne was considered guilty of adultery, Henry had seriously begun to plan to make Jane his wife.
1536: The Year that Changed Henry VIII, Suzannah Lipscomb
"I hear that, even before the arrest of the Concubine, the King, speaking with Mistress Jane Semel of their future marriage [...]"
#suzannah lipscomb#things that make you hmmm...#yeah i remember this part in her first documentary and kind of being like...eh?#i mean. i suppose it's possible that before the arrest = *right* before; as in . once the investigation is completed to the level#of 'preponderance of evidence" needed for arrest warrant#like it is true that chapuys is not making that connection in april. but i'm not sure how instructive we should find that#eustace chapuys#although i think we should maybe find it instructive that he doesn't claim jane is mary's supporter until after anne's arrest#like it is certainly a ...conveniently timed. retrospective rumor/report#there are members of the faction around jane that seem to be interacting with mary or speaking for or with her much more directly in#the months leading up to these events...#it's carew and 'some persons of the chamber' that send a message to mary to be of good cheer#'bears great love and reverence towards the princess' is not a judgement he expresses ; again; until mid may#so it doesn't seem it was all that..evident; necessarily#(like#frankly. that unnamed mistress of 1534 during her time in the beam of royal favour#seemed to have more direct involvement/ communication with mary than jane did...? during the era as mistress.#which i think is why there's been this sort of propulsive instinct to#not only link them but insist they were the same person#but returning to a former mistress was just not something henry...did#one of many reasons it seems implausible--#not just that chapuys described them so differently--#is that it wasn't henry's modus operandi to return to any woman he'd ended things with romantically#to believe it you'd have to believe she was his mistress in 1534; he rejected her/ended the tryst in favor of taking one up with m shelton#and then absented himself from m shelton to return again#i get that the slow burn is a more compelling arc from a storytelling perspective#it just doesn't seem to fit the pattern/ evidence is all....)

Olga, Princess of Yugoslavia, née of Greece and Denmark, in a documentary film by her daughter Elizabeth and a Serbian journalist Mira Adanja Polak, 1994.
"The Princess likes to be held by the hand for there was little tenderness in her life." - M. A. Polak
The said documentary caused a stir, so much so that Olga's eldest son, Alexander, filed a complaint against his sister for the damage to the image of their mother. Namely, Olga was heavily affected by Alzheimer's disease.

Exploring Slow Living: Documentaries, Movies, and Books
I don’t know a lot of people who share the same desperation I have for a slow life except for my boyfriend, a friend I constantly talk to these days and a bunch of online strangers in a Reddit sub I’m subscribed to. My boyfriend lived in a farm. LOL. But setting aside all the memes and controversies now infamously associated with that line, he really did and he has always dreamed of leaving the…
