“Hey, Carlos.”
“Hi baby.”
His eyes meet Sam’s, whose own phone is also held up to his ear. He can see the fear there. A bit of resignation, too. He knows it's in his eyes. They both nod, just barely.
TK draws in a shaky breath on the other end of the line.
“This is just our luck, huh?” comes over a few seconds later.
Carlos sniffs against tears that haven't quite yet come, and laughs slightly.
“Yeah. Very us,” he replies.
TK laughs too, barely perceptible over the phone. But Carlos knows. He knows TK. They're both silent, for a moment. The world is panicked yet dull around him – his focus is only on the call.
“I love you, Carlos,” his husband says. His voice breaks. Carlos can hear TK’s tears.
“I love you too, TK.” He can hear the thickness, the wetness in his own voice. He knows TK hears it too. Carlos closes his eyes, hoping for anything that will give the swirling in his chest peace. His mind is oddly quiet, like it's preparing for the end. But his chest, oh, it aches.
“I don't have anything to say,” Carlos whispers. TK sniffs.
“Neither do I,” he says.
“But–” Carlos takes a shaky breath. “I don't want to hang up. I want you here with me.”
He can hear TK’s pain through the silence.
“I know,” returns his husband’s voice.
And so they sit, in silence, for what must be at least a minute. Carlos needs to call his mother, but he can't bear to hang up. He looks over at Sam. There are tears in his eyes, a few in his face, and a smile plastered on even though no one is looking. He must be talking to his kids.
A stab in his stomach. They were so close. So close to having that.
Carlos looks away again.
“I wouldn't change a single thing,” Carlos says, breaking the silence. TK takes in a breath, he can hear it. “Anything that happened so that we could have these last 5 years.”
A small sob.
“I wouldn't either,” comes the reply. “I'd do anything to have those years.”
Carlos feels a tear slip down his cheek.
“We make a pretty good team, don't we?” he offers back.
He can feel a smile sneaking into his face, and TK laughs wetly.
“Yeah,” he says, and Carlos can hear his smile. Can see it in his mind’s eye.
They both know they need to go.
“Thanks for taking care of my heart,” TK whispers. Carlos makes some small, sad noise.
“Thanks for watching over mine,” he whispers back.
Smiles still on their faces, he knows.
“I love you,” says TK.
“I love you,” he returns.
The call ends.
Carlos registers a hand being placed on his shoulder. He turns to see Sam, eyes a bit red, surely matching Carlos. The other man squeezes his shoulder briefly, and Carlos returns the gesture.
They let go, and just hang there for a moment. Timeless, it feels.
Then, Carlos calls his mother.
“Carlitos,” she answers. He can hear the tears in her voice too.
“Mamá,” Carlos says, and his voice wavers. He clears his throat.
“I just wanted to say I love you.”
“I love you too, mijo. Te quiero mucho.”
“Te quiero mucho,” Carlos manages to repeat.
He ends the call.
Barely five seconds after he does, his surroundings start to bustle again. Loud voices, quickly moving people. It's time, he supposes.
Carlos takes a shaky breath, as deep as he can manage.
His father’s ring sits on his right pinky finger. His wedding band is on his left ring finger. His cross pendant rests on his chest.
Carlos gets down and prepares for impact.

I've got quite a few pieces looking for new homes! All pendants come ready to wear on a coordinating chain, packaged in a gift box with a velvet bag for storing between wears. Shipping is $7 extra in the US. Made from semiprecious gemstones, recycled and repurposed copper wire, some being 1950s radio wire.
It's weird sharing things like this when the world is so heavy and people are trying to just survive right now...but, the thing is....I am trying to survive too. Art is a form of resistance, and for a disabled American, it's also the way I'm attempting maintaining my sanity.
There's more I could say...but... I'm not sure I've got the energy for all that.

I am rotten to the wires forged among eternal fires guided by unholy choirs screaming in my code, I am rotten to the atom formed upon my base desires tortured by what they require or so I'm told
[Freeced - Murder Drones ELECTROSWING! (Rotten to the Wires)]
Yeah, it's been a minute since I felt like really getting into the shit behind these songs. But guess who's on Vyvanse now! Take that, ADHD-C and your legion of comorbidity!
Anyway. Here's the shit behind the stuff:
I'll be honest, I didn't quite click with Murder Drones at first. I thought it could be better. I liked the voice acting and the designs, but I thought the pacing and the structure and the corny dialogue would make the whole thing kind of a tough watch for me: a person who took 1 screenwriting class in college and decided to never shut up about it. (Or ever finish writing my feature. Let's keep ignoring that.) I, whose flawless opinions reign supreme above all, I who sneer down at the lesser works of mortal engineers who have had the audacity to make their projects exist rather than opting for my time-proven methodology instead: 1. contemplate making something incredible of my own, 2. feel wholly superior considering my imaginary credentials as someone who would have made that better thing, 3. never make a single move to do the work myself. It works so well for boosting my own ego, I'm kind of surprised anyone ever decides to actually make stuff! Don't they know that these things takes time, and regular effort, and that assholes like me might not like them?
But joke's on me, I DID like Murder Drones. I watched it at my own pace and judged judgingly and rolled my eyes at the tropier dialogue choices so that the 0 people in the room with me would know I had sophisticated taste, and after a few episodes I just really truly actually fucking genuinely enjoyed that shit. It was fantastic. I felt the cadmium lights of hell pierce my bittered soul during some of the first big fight scenes, felt my dusty android core heat up as it processed the emotions I was surely too watercooled to be staggered by right now, and before too long I was sitting in front of my PC in a state of total absorption, exhibiting (at a guess) the precise range of responses you'd see if Shadow the Hedgehog ever got his Axe-doused gloves on a copy of Devil May Cry.
And I was like, fuck. So what's the song about? Who is The Murder Drone?
In the end, I'm not sure I really had a choice. When it gets down to it, the songs I write from robot POVs (PsOV?) are always very personal, because personally I feel very much like a robot all the time. And as a robot, I feel constantly in a state of overflow, every horrible thing happening in the world around me further proof that I simply wasn't built to handle the rigors of being biologically alive. But lately I've been like, fuck it. Life is what you make of it. I want to live. I want to make a world where what I'm primed to be isn't an inevitable destiny if I refuse to let it be.
Thinking back on my life (unavoidable, I've tried quitting), it's always been frustrating coming to terms with every single straight-up lie that was stitched into my brain from the moment I was born. Lies of justice. Lies of morality, hateful dogmas wrapped in gilded epigrams. Lies of ownership and divine right and defenses for murder, corruption, greed, and the wholesale conquest, capture, and exploitation of anyone without enough allies to fight back. Lies that none of that shit ever happened. Lies that it wasn't still happening today. And the lie that says all of this—the harm, the hurt, the danger, the ceaseless violence, the annihilation of voices that stand against—is inevitable. That even if it sucks, oh well, what can you do? It's human nature to do these things. There is none righteous, no, not one—so let's act like it. The illusion of fated suffering and the illusion that the ones who cause the greatest harm are no more to blame than the ones they burn and kill.
But it's just—not true. Some of us have just been skipping over thousands of butchered lines that don't compute. We can do better. Of course we can. Of course we always could. So could the people who taught us. So could the people who govern us, who brush away people's lives like chaff with the same pen that draws a barricade around the wealth of parasites. Rotten to the atom, or to the Adam, we are meant to be discontent with our lot in life, to turn on each other instead of the ones causing our greatest pain, and even to hate and fear the victims of our cruel empire in caricature, whether they're our own neighbors already laboring against the system designed for their frustration, or faceless entities abroad that surely deserve to be eradicated because [any lie will do]. That others hate and fear us not because we're the most brutal, mindless destructive force on the face of the planet, but because they must want what we have. Because what we have is so great. After all, we have our freedom, don't we? Freedom to what, exactly, no one seems to know.
At this point in my—essay?—it occurs to me that I haven't mentioned what country I live in. But I think that the fact that I don't need to is pretty hard evidence of our own damnation.
This post might have gotten away from me.
Look, I think anyone who listens to my songs for a while will probably figure out that nothing I write is ever just about the shit that it's about. I wouldn't know how to make art without putting something from my real life into it, no matter what inspired me to start writing in the first place. I also wouldn't know how to feel strongly about something and not talk about it, in real life, online, in the things I make. I don't know if it counts as activism to just say "hey, shit's fucked and we're the bad guys," but if I feel that shit is fucked then everybody's going to have to hear about it when they travel to my zone. And maybe they're gonna miss the message entirely. It's a very danceable tune (if I may), and that's probably going to be most people's primary takeaway from listening to it on Spotify or watching a TikTok edit starring the mechanical talents of Serial Designation: N. I'm not sure that beating people over the head with a full interlinear explanation of the song would really help my cause, if a cause is what I have, and I'm not sure I have much more to offer anyone than what I've already said.
But please, dear fucking god alive, don't let anyone say, 10 years from now, on whatever platform is left standing, "did Freeced mean something more by these lyrics, or was it just a Murder Drones song?" and nobody be sure. Be so sure, gang. Art isn't ever being made in a vacuum, and I don't ever really think my nerdy little YouTube fan songs are exempt. How the hell could they be? I'm here, after all. Same planet as the wifi is on. Same planet as most of each other (I hope those astronauts make it back ok). Which part of anything we experience is an island to itself?
On that self-important note.
Apparently I like Murder Drones a lot! It meant a good deal to me, it inspired this song to whatever degree it did, and I don't really feel the need to point out any of its cinematic flaws in the future, especially when other people can do that way more insightfully than me. I'm glad to have watched it! I'm a little scared of the fandom! But that's just me, I'll always be a little scared of whatever's new and crashing through the comments of my work. I just hope some way, whatever way, that any of this matters in the end.

One of the defining aspects of the current war in Ukraine is the presence of fighting units with distinct animating ideologies. Plenty of attention has been given to the far-right units of both the Territorial Defense Forces (TDF) and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, such as the Azov Regiment and Right Sector. On the Russian side, there has been a mix of ideologies present among its fighters, from neo-Bolshevik/authoritarian communist to neo-Nazi. Nationalist factions exist on each side as well, such as the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment comprised of Belarusian volunteers, and the Georgian National Legion from their namesake country, organized in 2014 and still fighting today, both on the side of Ukraine. The 141st Special Motorized Regiment, or the Kadyrovtsy, a Chechen paramilitary unit, has posted droves of content on social media from their side of the invasion forces, notably during the siege of Mariupol—which since the outset of the war became an adversarial contest between the Kadyrovtsy and the neo-Nazi Azov Regiment. (Azov fighters posted video of themselves dipping rifle rounds in pork lard as an insult to their Muslim enemies on February 27th.)
Exclusive to the Ukrainian side of the war are fighting anarchist formations and those of ideologically aligned units. One of the most prominent anarchist organizations involved in the war is the Resistance Committee (RC), a coordinating body for anarchist, libertarian, and anti-fascist units within the TDF. Many of these smaller units participating in the Resistance Committee are openly anarchist, such as RevDia and Black Flag Ukraine. Others are less ideologically inclined and were organized under different auspices prior to the war, such as the anti-fascist football hooligan firm, Hoods Hoods Klan.
The Resistance Committee and affiliated fighting units have had a consistent presence on social media since the war began, posting videos and photos of their armed fighters in the field on exercise, on the range siting in Maxim machine guns, at aid collection points, declaring their solidarity for jailed comrades in Belarus, patrolling their various areas of operations, and recently of some affiliated fighters at the front, who along with other members of the TDF have been redeployed to defend the east of the country. On May 20th, they published a four-page manifesto outlining who they are, their principles, the current scope of their activities, their organizational aspirations and greater aspirations for Ukrainian society, their view on the war, and some key demands made of both the Ukrainian government and the international community.
The very presence of anarchists within the TDF has raised many questions among those outside of Ukraine. Typical of these questions is to ask how anarchists fighting for Ukraine are organized, and what their approximate force strength is at this time. Even more common are questions of how anarchists could join any state’s military without contradicting their own ideology; similar to this are questions of how “anarchists could fight on the same side as fascists and neo-Nazis”. Ignoring that this last question is a major mischaracterization of the TDF’s force structure, we nonetheless hope to answer all of these questions about the anarchists currently fighting in and defending Ukraine.
Despite the attention that anarchists of the TDF have attracted in recent weeks, there is still much that the outside world does not know about them. Our interview with a participating member of the Resistance Committee and a TDF fighter of the affiliated anti-authoritarian platoon, “Ilya,” should answer many of these questions. Speaking strictly on his own behalf, however, here is what Ilya had to say:

Chloe Simon at MMFA:
After a week of right-wing media spreading baseless smears about Haitian migrants abducting and eating pets, conservative activist Christopher Rufo posted a video allegedly showing a cat on a barbecue grill in Dayton, Ohio. Dayton police have issued a statement saying “there is no evidence to even remotely suggest” that any community is eating pets — but some in right-wing media ran with the story, claiming that Rufo’s video falsely “confirmed” the rumors about migrants and animals.
Last week, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, promoted baseless and racist rumors about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets. During the September 10 presidential debate, Trump claimed, “They’re eating the dogs. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” Right-wing media also jumped on the narrative, calling Haitian migrants “locusts,” zombies,” and “weird Third World aliens.” [The Associated Press, 9/11/24; Media Matters, 9/10/24]
On September 14, Rufo posted a video purportedly showing a cat on a barbecue with the caption, “EXCLUSIVE: We have discovered that migrants are, in fact, eating cats in Ohio. We have verified, with multiple witnesses and visual cross-references, that African migrants in Dayton, the next city over from Springfield, barbecued these cats last summer.” Rufo did acknowledge in his Substack that “this single incident does not confirm every particularity of Trump’s statement. The town is Dayton, not Springfield; cats alone were on the grill, not cats and dogs.” However, he continued that the video “does break the general narrative peddled by the establishment media and its ‘fact checkers’” and that “independent journalists are already on the hunt and could reveal more.” Prior to releasing the video, Rufo claimed he would “provide a $5,000 bounty to anyone who can provide my team with hard, verifiable evidence that Haitian migrants are eating cats in Springfield, Ohio.” [Twitter/X, 9/14/24, 9/11/24; Substack, 9/14/24]
Rufo, a senior fellow at conservative think tank the Manhattan Institute, is a conservative activist known for his right-wing crusades against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and higher education. Media Matters has described his career as a long attempt to “inject bigotry and incorrect information into mainstream discourses about gay and trans people, drag queens, and the academic discipline known as critical race theory.” [Vox, 9/10/23; Media Matters, 1/6/23, 7/27/23; The Guardian, 2/21/24]
Dayton police have categorically denied that any group has “engaged in eating pets.” In a statement, the department wrote, “We stand by our immigrant community and there is no evidence to even remotely suggest that any group, including our immigrant community, is engaged in eating pets. Seeing politicians or other individuals use outlandish information to appeal to their constituents is disheartening.” Rufo’s video has also received a lot of backlash online, with open-source intelligence analyst Oliver Alexander writing that it was “clearly chicken you weirdo. Dude’s never seen chicken that wasn’t dino-nugget shaped.” In a further attempt to verify the video’s claims, CBS News reached out to veterinary experts who cited the image’s poor quality, while another “noted the legs looked ‘weirdly distended’ and in his opinion, did not look like cat legs.” [Twitter/X, 9/16/24, 9/14/24; The Independent, 9/15/24; CBS News, 9/16/24]
Right-wing disinformation purveyor Christopher Rufo posted a video purporting that cats were cooked on a barbecue grill in Dayton, Ohio. Dayton PD, however, shot down Rufo’s rumor-mongering by stating that there is no evidence of cats being grilled in Dayton.
