Curious for your final thoughts on Til We Have Faces?

You know, I read his Narnia series when I was in elementary school, and I was a big fan. I also was pretty religious at that time. I'm now very much not, and I remembered a lot of Christian symbolism in the Narnia series, so I wasn't exactly excited about picking up Til We Have Faces. I knew nothing about it other than that you recommended it and that it worked under my 'classics' category.

And I really liked it! I'm not really sure what I make of the end or if I really like that, but I'm fine with saying I really enjoyed the book as a whole even if I'm not sure what I think of the end. I didn't know the story of Psyche, so I can't speak to what he did with the mythology, but the afterward referenced the story as it's well known, and I'm a big fan of 'what if the woman from this story actually did have a bigger role and a more nuance, complicated motivation around what happened.' It made me think of Lavinia, which was another sort of Greek story retelling.

When the story first began, and it was the doubting Greek versus the a believing pagan society, my interest was really piqued knowing what little I knew of Lewis. It was entirely not what I expected of someone who may use their writings to evangelize their beliefs, but this felt more, if anything personal, like a person exploring one's belief. Where does the modernity of the day meet the faith of belief? Which is so well placed in Orual, who is raised by a skeptic in her homeland of firm believers (I don't know what I think of her father's belief. I do think he has a sort of core instinct of belief but in the end a skepticism built out of self interest).

But most of all, I love the love she had for Psyche and how she let it take over everything. Redival may have been a pain in the ass from the start, but Orual really didn't attempt to get to know her, and I definitely think she did Redival a bit of a disservice for that. I love that we get to be in the POV of someone who can be pretty convincing about why she does what she does and think what she does and sympathize with her even while we know she's walking down a disastrous path. I adored her hopeless love of Bardia. Hopeless in that she never got back the kind of love she desired, but he absolutely did love her back. Honestly all the relationships that felt convincingly of having love in them were deliciously complicated and messy and great.

LOVED the solider queen stuff! Young Furi would have forgiven all the perceived slowness of the start for that!

I was thrilled at the temple to Psyche and their version of events. How wrong it was while still having enough of the truth that you could see how someone could listen to the story from Psyche herself and come to the conclusions. And if we're generous to Psyche and think she tried to put a nice spin on Orual's actions, how easy it would be for a listener to assign malicious intent. Afterall, there was some wasn't there.

But then yeah. That ending was... strange. Not sure what I think of it. That's when it felt like it veered of to perhaps some moralizing. When their god got turned into just Orual and there was some Other Ultimate presence she was supposed to have just trusted all along, but it's okay that she didn't yada yada XD It walks a tricky line of leaving Orual's tragedy of never seeing or knowing Psyche again but getting to tie that knot in the story, but I'm not sure I think it was done well.

And to leave the story off with someone else ending it and speaking of trying to get the story off to the intended audience is soooo interesting. Especially when I think Lewis intends Greeks to sort of be the stand-ins for 'Western' and how I think The Fox's thoughts are what he believed likely most aligned with those of his readers. The idea that WE are the intended audience but that this is so because we are strictly not among those the story was written, by and large, about? Lots to mull over. I don't know that I plan a re-read anytime soon, but I think the story would benefit a lot from a reread!
