I thought my "struggling to get anything done until its very very late at night, and only for a few hours, after a full day of fatigue and laziness" behavior was a recent thing, in the wake of graduating and being unemployed and out of schooling, but its been at the very least 5 years because I made a comic about this when i was still IN college.

it's when he gets to elusia castle proper that he realizes he didn't really think this through.

did he want to fight a war? i mean, not really. it'd sounded really inspiring at the time, when he and goldmary had been talking about it. elusia was stirring up for something big, and hortensia and a bunch of others were getting pulled out of school for it. there were even rumors the academy was going to suspend entirely to help prepare for everything. it was all so sudden.

it felt like——just yesterday, they'd been hanging out together after class, talking about the best way to do their math problem sets as fast as possible so they could spend the rest of the day shopping, and making fun of professor peony's weird speech tic, and talking about how much it'd suck to end up in different sections next semester "so rosado you'd better work harder to catch up to the rest of us!!", and if getting left behind wasn't going to motivate him to bring his grade up even a little bit, nothing else would.

and then the academy'd gotten so quiet so fast as a lot of people left in a hurry. and their classes were getting cancelled so they could help sort out rations of clothing and food instead.⠀(⠀clothes? rationed? in elusia? it just didn't even feel real. what do you mean ' in case fabric had to be redressed for bandages? ' what do you mean?⠀)

and then——they were here.

which was also weird. because rosado'd never walked among royalty before. well, obviously, there was hortensia, but she wasn't a princess, she was just his best friend. but here, nobody smiled and everyone was——again——super quiet and barely looked at him and goldmary even once, much less twice. if they talked, they talked to hortensia, and it's not until he got used to them kneeling and bowing that he finally started to see she was a princess after all.

and he'd asked her:

should i do all that too?

it didn't feel right, but——should i do all that too? he didn't really want to cause more trouble for her, and maybe everyone would think he and goldmary were weird if they didn't.

but he just couldn't bring himself to, in the end. it wasn't right. it wasn't him.

(⠀looking at hortensia, the answer seemed to be ' no. '⠀)

which made him even more determined to be. ' good afternoon, your majesty ', ' may i assist you down the steps, princess? ' ——no way. it'd always been "hey hortensia, what's up?" and "i'll get there faster than youuuu!"

only problem was, it turned out he had more to think about than just himself now. it took a couple weeks to really sink in, but then he started seeing them: the sidelong looks from officials, attendants, all these people in the castle whose roles he didn't even have names for and couldn't even begin to keep track. he started hearing them: "if the princess needed retainers, she should've told someone. there are more qualified guards out there than two random friends from school."

friends are good, they said, but friends won't put themselves at risk for you. friends don't stick their necks out under threat of death. friends are fair-weather attachments: they're there to have fun when your lives come together, then move apart when they're not. funny thing is, he thinks, he would've said the same not super long ago. why risk his life for someone else's war? why should he fight just because someone else needed to? if life took them in different directions, just embrace it! they don't always have to be close.

those lines of thought don't trail so far out of reach that he can't still touch and taste them ; it's too easy to get it.

and yeah, for most people, for sure.

but——who knows. he's got a spear in one hand and some reins in the other and there really isn't a single doubt in his head, and why? it's really just as simple as that:

he just doesn't want to let hortensia go.
