Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. Only gathered 35 minutes worth of exposure before the wispy clouds wrecked havoc so I really had to massage the data and coax the photons in post-processing to display a modicum of what can be revealed in this gorgeous section of sky. The Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex is a rather colourful deep sky object that can be found by looking at Antares in the night sky, the core of the Scorpius asterism, the heart of the scorpion, lighting the way with its beautiful reddish colour sparkling in the sky. Antares shown here as a bright yellow star in the yellowish portion of the complex. The complex itself lies some 460 light years away from Earth and is one of the nearest star forming region. M4 can be seen next to Antares and the beautiful dust lanes that can be seen converging to the colourful nebula shows a beautiful surprise at the left edge of the image, that of Jupiter, our beloved gas giant in our solar system. This was shot with a QHY294C with a Nikon 85mm f1.8D shot on an unknown aperture as I feel I may have nudged the aperture control while focusing 😅. The whole setup is mounted on a CEM25P and has a 50mm guidescope and zwo224mc guidecam. Shot with exposures of 180s. 14min wide field of Antares and the Rho Ophiuci Region / La Palma 2018 This is my very first try to photograph a celestial object with a telephoto lens. I had a crush on the Rho Ophiuci Region since I started to photograph the milkyway and nearby constellations. You can easily see the bright yellow star on the left - Antares - the heart of Scorpius (Qalbu l-ʿAqrab) - with a distance of 600 light-years or the Star Cluster M4 - which is approx 7200 light-years away. And of course the colourful dust and nebuleae around makes this region very famous and beautiful. In a few weeks I will return to la Palma and continue to photograph that region to add more exposure time for a better result. That’s the cool thing about deep-sky photography! Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex by Martin_Heigan About this image A Camera Lens image of a section of the large Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. Rho Ophiuchi is a dark nebula of gas and dust that is located 1° south of the star ρ Ophiuchi of the constellation Ophiuchus (close to the red Supergiant star Antares). The camera was on my Telescope Mount, with Sidereal Tracking and Autoguiding to counter track Earth's rotation (as I would normally do with my Telescope). About the Interstellar Cloud Colors: Fine dust illuminated from the front by starlight produces blue reflection nebulae. The atoms of gaseous clouds that are excited by ultraviolet starlight produce reddish emission nebulae. Back-lit dust clouds block light and appear dark. Antares (a red super-giant star, and one of the brighter stars in the night sky), lights up the yellow-red dust clouds. Rho Ophiuchi lies at the center of the blue nebula. Interstellar clouds are even more colorful than we can see in visible light, emitting light across a large portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. At the beginning of April I camped on the edge of the Muddy Mountains Wilderness Area in Nevada. I was hope for great daytime explorations of an area I had never been to and great nighttime astrophotography opportunities at night. The daytime worked great, the nighttime not so much. Three of the four nights there were still clouds at midnight as well as the omnipresent, overbearing, and astro-defeating Las Vegas light pollution along the southern horizon. The fourth night intense wind gusts raked our camp and prevented any tripod work. However, looking at my astrophotography planning app I could see that on the 3rd night the clouds would clear 2am. So, I set my alarm with the idea that I would shoot both the Milky Way and the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex as they rose in the east. Due to the Vegas light pollution, the Milky Way was but a very faint smear. But using a 85mm lens coupled with my astro-modified Pentax K1 I was able to capture 17 60 second exposures of the colourful nebula-and-stars cloud. This is using just the in-camera Astrotracer feature that only modern Pentax DSLRs have. No other special gear was used. I stacked and integrated the images in Astro Pixel Processor (no calibration files were captured) and further processed in Photoshop. The yellow mass in the lower-left of the frame is the edge of the Milky Way. The bright star is the massive orange giant Antares with just to its right (west) the large yellowish globular star cluster known affectionately as M 4.
