Finished fantasy high s1 and it was sooo good.

The resolution to the parent kid relationships (with the exception of poor Kristen and Adaine) were so heartbreakingly wonderful and so fun.

I have to say that Fig understanding that her mom is a complex person and she is allowed to be imperfect hit hard. The way Emily's voice broke and she started crying because she was scared she was going to see her mom die broke my heart. And of course Fabian and his dad had such an insane and wonderful resolution and I was tearing up the whole time.

Insane finale for an insane season.

I cannot wait to start sophomore year so I can meet Ayda ngl.

fabian and fig not ever having died is SO interesting to me, like i was relistening to the early episodes (crazy sentence since i’ve been a fan since 2020) and his desire to protect is such an interesting trait bc yes both he and fig have it, bc i think they both have that protective instinct + genuine desire to do so, but also the way fabian was raised to be ‘the man’ and part of that is being strong enough to defend not only your self but your family. like the thing where he chooses to save his mama in the end of s1 despite definitely would of rather having bill survive, and bill says i would have slit you in half if you saved me over her. this is all to say id love to hear if u have any more thoughts on fabian’s feelings

YEAH YEAH YEAH YOURE SO RIGHT!! I think there is a point in time where Fabian feels genuinely helpless and useless because he lets people get hurt and can't undo it. Or I guess that's not what I think, thats just canon. (I just finished answering this ask and I yapped a lot even though what I was actually trying to say is so straightforward. My bad lmao.)

It starts in freshman year. Younger Fabian thinks he is the most skilled and important kid in the world and then he gets that rug pulled from under him. I know he was adventuring with his father a little before but his first real own fight ends with two of his new friends dead. That sucked. He was arguably the most dejected afterwards? Like yeah Gorgug was having a rough time but Gorgug was having a rough time the whole day, Fabian went from such a high to such a low. He absolutely did not think he'd care that much going in, but then, be was under the impression that he's so strong and capable; if he's so strong then why did his allies die? Doesn't that prove his weakness? Some scrawny kid arguably showed more bravery than him by jumping right into a monster, and the bravest Fabian felt was probably when he managed to help Riz after that went south.

He absolutely was raised to "be a man" and more importantly a leader, but before that day Fabian wasn't ever actually responsible for anyone's safety — not even his own, because he grew up both coddled and socially isolated. The first time Fabian feels responsibility for the well being of others (which he has to take, because he is Fabian Aramais Seacaster and he's obviously in charge, right?) he realises how fucking heavy it weighs on his shoulders.

Later they have some fuck ups with Adaine and Kristen and get whooped into shape by his father and Fabian gets it into his head that yeah, he (and Gorgug) are the front liners. They're the protectors. He's strong and capable (and still so much better than most other people) and he's going to protect his friends (that he cares about so so so much even if he's at a point where he can't openly admit it) and nothing bad is going to happen and after defeating Kalvaxus it maybe seems like that's true and then BAM sophomore year. Two of his friends go missing. Fig ends up kind of fine "just" possessed but Riz is decidedly NOT fine and he had to fight a creepy mirror Riz not-clone and there is a moment where he thinks his best friend (who he, at this point refuses to openly call his best friend because he's a shitty insecure teenage boy) is fucking dead. I think Fabian had not yet considered how he'd feel if any of his friends died (again) before that, of course he didn't that's a crazy thing to think about. He'd managed to brush off the corn monster dilemma because that was their first fight and they were just inexperienced but it's never gonna happen again, but it does. His father also also died when he wasn't there — does this mean something? Do people die when he's not making sure to watch them? How can he keep everyone he cares about safe when he is just one man and all his hands know how to do is to slay one monster after the other in hopes they never reach his loved ones.

It's probably fine, he thinks, until it's not. Chungle Down Bim Arc. Right when he thinks he's in his element and feels good and smart and important and powerful he leads a crew of people straight to their death and comes out of it humiliated and needing to be saved and maybe he was never that strong at all.

He regains his confidence by stepping up as a protector and supporting his friends. Like yes a big part of it is just discovering that he's passionate about dancing but the bigger part is arguably putting out the fires on his party members. Fabian is so capable and worthy and helpful and he is keeping his friends from harm and he feels like himself again but also like a new man.

They enter the Nightmare King's Forest and it's his heroism spell that keeps Kristen safe. His magic born from the desire to protect. For just a moment he feels like he found himself and his battle sheet feels nice and warm under his finger tips and he feels right in his skin.

Then Kristen fucking dies.

And she doesn't just die, no, she dies in front of him when he elected to go with her and was supposed to keep her safe. He is supposed to protect his friends now and yet, and yet, he can't actually do anything. Kristen is dead and he doesn't know what happened and he doesn't know how to help and he is useless because there is nothing he can do to reach beyond death like Kristen has done to help them (mostly Gilear) oh so many times.

Then Riz and Adaine die. Everyone dies. Why do his friends keep dying and Fabian is always fine — why was he fine after the shit in Leviathan when everyone else died and he definitely should have met his demise as well? Is he strong? Is he just lucky? Is this a cruel trick of fate? Why does he, despite being stupid and reckless and putting people in danger again and again and again continue to survive when no one else does after he fails to protect them?

Fig hasn't died either, but she learns revivify and even starts creating diamonds to cast it on the spot. She's saving their friends. She's being helpful. She's using the gift of being permitted to stay alive again and again to help, and what is he doing? Nothing. He's not doing shit.

Except that's not right, because there is something he can do. There's something he did do. Because Riz was falling and slipping past his reach and he really thought he'd loose his friend but then the extension of himself that is so deeply connected to his own self discovery and acceptance reaches out and saves him. It saves Riz and embraces him so gently and brings him to Fabian so he can cradle him and swaddle him and keep him safe and the flames that are supposed to be so hot and destructive are simply just warm. It reaffirms his discovery that yes, this is good. This new him is a little softer and maybe a little less imposing but it's helpful and good, and he just has to focus on the fact that this new him knows how to protect his friends.

No longer is his version of protection just killing whatever is threatening them before it gets the chance to hurt, now it's more preventing harm. Which is so simple and obvious but it never occurred to him, and maybe it's stupid that it took him this long to learn, but all he ever knew was to be ruthless and to fight and to demand respect because that's how his father did it — but Fabian isn't his father and he's learning to be okay with that, and maybe he isn't even a leader but that doesn't mean that he does not hold the power to do what he wants.

Fabian can't do magic to revive anyone but he can and he must and he will keep them from dying in the first place in the future, and the strained muscles and calloused hands that previously sought only to fight for glory and recognition now act as a shield to keep others safe. They have to. If not that then he can't do anything else.

He regains his cocky attitude but with just a little more grace, he regains his fighting spirit but instead of being a champion (hurt fight kill) he's a battlemaster with manoeuvres that prevent foes from getting to his friends. He regains his grandiose presence, demanding attention in every space he enters, but now it serves to essentially draw aggro. Almost all of his spells are support or utility spells! Yeah that's because he is a college of swords bard and fighting wise acts like a martial but in character that means something. Fabian knows feather fall. He needs his precious spell slots to do damage and a younger Fabian with the same build would only focus on that and maybe buff himself, but this Fabian will always cast feather fall. He will never watch one of his friends almost slip through his fingers again.

That's not to say that he isn't still stupid, or occasionally reckless, or stops throwing himself into battle without thinking it through. But his priorities have shifted and his way of thinking has too and he can never ever allow anyone to fall while he's still standing. And maybe he didn't even change that much, maybe he just got more Fabian, less Bill. Because it was already a Freshman Year Fabian that took the sentinel feat (which in universe would translate to him purposely learning how to slow down opponents), no one else.

pomo, like how's Kalina doing or honestly anything about that au i'm fascinated with it

PoMo my BELOVED it's just. Like. I cannot say a thing about this story without it sounding absolutely unhinged it is also full of Fucked Up Shit (TM). It is all the worst implications of @20dimensionsoftangerine's Properties series and the most fucked up version of Midnight Oil Riz because instead of his Emotional Support Abernant being a friend, Adaine's functionally his slave, even if he refuses to acknowledge that.

With all of that being said, Kalina actually gets off very easy for a story where 'everyone gets Worse' is a major theme. For context, PoMo is a 'The Nightmare King Wins' AU (it's also a Royals AU but that's not particularly relevant to Kalina) and, in Midnight Oil, 'The Nightmare King Wins' also means Riz gets his parents back! Pok gets raised from the dead and Sklonda is teleported to the middle of nowhere with her dead husband, her dead son, her husband's murderer and the woman who groomed her son, and her son's slave. It's a great and normal time for everyone.

So while Riz's reward is that he gets his parents back, Kalina gets... a body. She still has many of the advantages of being a plague, but after the resurrection, she's a fully fledged person! Does she know how to be a person? No. She was made as a familiar and then transformed into a plague and, now, a person. With free will and feelings and about fifteen existential crises that she does not want to deal with thank you very much.

But, eventually, after Pok bows out of the story for Moral Reasons and Sklonda stays behind, well... It's (partially) Midnight Oil continuity, and while they couldn't fuck there for Thematic reasons, PoMo is for all the Dark Themes of its sources. So: Skalina. Yuri more toxic than a nuclear reactor.

And even in spite of that, Kalina figures her shit out. She learns how to be a person, she learns how to love, and how to regret, and how to grieve. She comes to terms with life and death and self-actualizes in a way very, very few characters in PoMo get to. Which doesn't mean she's not a little shit, of course, just that she is a person outside of her relationship to the Nightmare King--or even Cassandra.

For a story that barely exists, @20dimensionsoftangerine, @domesticice and I have written and plotted a truly unconscionable amount of this AU and it's been an absolute delight. There's a lot more than I've shared here but due to it's dark content and the disjointed nature of the parts we have written, it doesn't look like something we're going to share large swathes of publicly, but we are very happy to yap about it in DMs and on Discord.

OK THIRD MOVIE TIME THE END IS NEAR!!!

So back in move one/two buddy was student president, but then kristen beat him and he/his evil preacher dad was Not happy about it, mainly bc kristen starts talking abt accepting everyone and talking about her new doubt got etc etc they just kind of hate her like they do in fh

so buddy pulls an audrey and goes full evil, starts believing in bakarath the very real rage god and is helped by porter/jace because yeah they can still be evil here, as a treat.

so fig and ayda are talking about like letting more kids come to the hero school, they bring over bucky and some other kids that i havent thought about, but bucky and kristen and just kind of eevie and dizzy. as they're bringing the kids off the island, ankarna who was awoken by buddy's whole Thing tries to escape, and that the version of hades trying to get out in this au.

so that makes fig and ayda decide to keep the barrier up for good, but then everything with buddy starts to happen, he's starting the whole rage curse thing instead of a sleeping curse, and so the bad kids go back to the island to get some magical item to stop it.

that's where they run into kipperlilly and the rat grinders. kipperlilly ends up with the item they need and they end up having to work together like in the movie. lucy is like eevie where she Really wants everyone to get along and tries to make everyone work together, but it is not going great. kipperlilly is beefing with kristen and riz and there is just Tension with everyone else. they do keep accidentally bonding while being forced to work together and kipperlilly hates it, but lucy loves it

it comes out that fig and ayda had decided to keep the barrier closed forever and everyone else is Obviously upset by this. that gives buddy the chance to curse them as well, and now everyone but fig is affected by the curse

fig ends up with her whole paladin thing with ankarna to stop the rage curse, buddy is like "Oops my bad guys," but he's really nice now and everyone forgives him. the rat grinders and the bad kids are friends by the end of it and everything works out in the end!

SO that's all of the au i've thought abt, i obv glossed over the smaller details but if anyone else is interested at All in this au please come up w ur own ideas!! and i am always happy to yap more abt it i havent even touched on fabian and riz yet

Cariad was playing with her friend Madeline. At least, Cariad thought Madeline was her friend. They were playing superhero’s, and apparently Madeline had a power that made Cariad go away because she was annoying. Naive, innocent little Cariad believed it was just part of the game. Riz glanced up over his science book at the pair. He felt bad for the little blonde girl, just trying desperately to make friends. He’s given up on that a long time ago. All the kids were…immature. He couldn’t blame them. This was preschool- of course the kids were immature. But they just didn’t get him in the slightest.

Cariad then tried to be social. She didn’t necessarily want to be. She liked being solitary and by herself. But her mother had told her to at least try and make an effort so she did. The staff had given up trying to coax Riz.

To her surprise, the kids let her join the game. But she was forced to be the maid while everyone else was royalty. She seemed content with the role, being the outsider, until a girl screamed. Cariad instantly covered her ears. She hated, hated, hated loud noises. She walked away from the game and saw Riz. He seemed quiet. A little intimidating but she doubted he’d be loud. So she approached him with a small smile. She was wearing cute little dungarees and her hair was in two plaids held by pretty pink ribbons. A smile was plastered on her face.

“Hello! I’m Cariad. You’re Riz, right? Can I sit with you please?” She asked, twiddling with her fingers. He gave a silent nod to say yes. She sat beside him and peeped over his shoulder to see what he was reading.

“That seems pretty interesting!” Her gaze turned excited when he got to a page about marine life. Cariad knew everything there was to know about sea life, she studied it in her own time frequently.

“Did you know that sharks can go into a trance? When you flip a shark upside down they go into a trance-like state called tonic immobility!” She said excitedly. She adored sharks, an uncommon interest in 1880. “And they’ve been around for like a really really long time, like 445 million years! Can you imagine being alive for that long?!” He listened intently, the corner of his mouth twitching up slightly in amusement. Her eyes were sparkling with glee at the opportunity to ramble. Most people told her to shut up by now. And other kids normally weren’t interested anyways. It was nice he was listening to her. But then she figured he was just being polite and that he didn’t care either so she reigned herself in a little.

“Sorry-.” She mumbled. That’s when he did something unexpected. He chuckled. She hardly heard a word out of that boy the whole time she’d been at this preschool and here he was laughing. She liked his laugh, it made her smile.

He scooted over closer to share the book with her and they read it together, Cariad just yapping if she saw something that caught her interest. “You seem to know a lot about this kind of thing, huh?”

“Mhm! I’ve got so many books like this at home! I love reading! I like fiction but non fiction is really cool because I like knowing about the world. Mother calls it a special interest or something. Do you have anything like that?”

“I like science.”

“Science is so cool!” She grinned. She was always grinning, like a little sunshine. She leaned her head on his shoulder to read the book better. Riz flinched slightly, before he realised what she was doing. She was touching him…nicely? He could hardly recall a time he’d been touched with care, rather than loathing. Being groomed to be the next dark lord didn’t exactly give him a loving household. Yes, he couldn’t feel pain. But he could still suffer things like passing out even if he couldn’t feel it. Some people close to the family thought it was fascinating and a gift. Riz knew it was a dangerous curse.

He focused on the little girl on his shoulder. Maybe there was one tolerable person at this preschool after all. He hardly noticed Cariad undoing her cute little plaits to tie the pink ribbon in a bow around his index finger. She tried to do the same for herself but she struggled to tie it around herself, so Riz gently took her hand and tied it for her. She smiled at him and put her head back on his shoulder. The staff looked slightly shocked, but we’re glad the girl people found annoying and the boy who kept to himself had found a friend in eachother.

The two ended up falling asleep. They’d skipped ‘nap time’ to read with eachother and talk. When Eloise, Cariads mother, and Riz’s nanny came to collect the kids at home time, they saw them cuddled up on a bean bag, a book on their lap. Cariad was asleep on his shoulder and Riz leant his cheek against her head. Both were reluctant to pull the two apart, they looked so content. But eventually, Eloise picked up her daughter and left. She noticed her hair had come out of its pigtails. Before she saw the pink ribbon tied around her finger, with the other ribbon around Riz’s index finger. She smiled to herself.

Maybe her daughter would have friends after all.

🌻FRANK isn't the only one with a stress ball collection....... i'm breaking my silence to say.. i also....... have a small hoard at work.. it started as a joke, i swear. my coworker noticed how i fidget with my ring and this sliding fidget toy a lot and gave me this company logo stress ball he recently got. i almost ripped it in half from how had i was squeezing it. and then for the company secret santa, i put stress balls on my wishlist as a joke. i got a pac man one. thus, the very real, very persistent stress ball collection began....... since then my boyfriend's gotten me an onion stress ball from one of his site visits, a new coworker got me a dumpling, my other coworker got me a flamingo, and the most recent one is a hardhat my boyfriend got from.. another site visit.

🌻speaking of flamingos, i'm secretly obsessed???? like, again, it started as a joke. i saw this big christmas themed flamingo cookie platter bowl thing and got it to hold pastries for the company holiday grazing day. and then.. there was a christmas themed flamingo tinsel decoration at target....... and then my coworker caught on and gave me that flamingo stress ball...... now i always have one (1) eye out for other obscure, niche flamingo things...

🌻i faced my fear. snuug and riz bullied me into facing frostfang grandpa and raging boogerman twice each last night. i was sniveling the entire time, but... they were right...... now my ice weapon's bangin' and i'm so mad about it
