Tiny Robotic Insects by MIT: The Future of Pollination
Tiny Robotic Insects by MIT: The Future of Pollination @neosciencehub #MIT #RoboticInsects #Pollination #MAVs #neosciencehub
In a groundbreaking development, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created tiny robotic insects with the potential to revolutionize pollination. These micro-aerial vehicles (MAVs) are designed to mimic the agility and endurance of real insects like bees. With significant implications for agriculture, these robotic pollinators could help address the growing concern…

Very heavy on the "animal deprived plague" coz one of the families in the human civilization had a robotic pet dog. Not even a real one, a robotic one!
One of the things I loved about The Wild Robot from a writing/world-building perspective was that it was clearly set in a post-apocalyptic world, but the details were very vague, and you don't even know until about an hour in:
Tumblr media
"Beautiful shot," you think, and then it hits you that the whales are swimming over the Golden Gate Bridge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abandoned, crumbling satellites and a sunken city. And then when we do see the human city, they freak out at the sight of geese:
Tumblr media
Animal-derived plague? Global warming? We don't know. We only know that something has happened. But like the general theme, whatever bad has occurred, the natural world is thriving. An unexpected positive from a history of tragedy.

Everyone is so horny about robot girls when plant girls are right there. Lay in the sunlight with your plant girl, kiss her and taste blackberries, laugh together as you gently shoo away bumble bees trying to pollinate her, make a joke that only you can do that. Plant girls !!!

Hiii, Harpy anon again.
I have more thoughts. Instead of making Idia a dog boy, I say we make him an insect. Mostly because there are some insects out there that just make sense for him. (Also because he kinda look like bug to me tbh)
For example, spiders. (Yes I know they aren't insects but they look insects and that's all that matters) Spiders specifically have a lot of significance in Greek mythology, so it would make sense for Idia (who is based off a Greek god) to have some kind of connection there. But also spiders tend to be solitary creatures, they don't live in groups and only come together during mating. And a lot of the time, during mating the males are killed by their female mates. Which..I feel like is why Idia would avoid Yuu like the plague. Because all he can think about near them is "Mate.Mate.Mate.Mate.MATE-" and he's scared if he tries anything he'll get killed immediately.
Now I don't know if we've talked about Ortho yet but I feel like he's a little robot bee. I know it doesn't really go with spider Idia but Robot bee Ortho would be so gosh darn cute. There was a study done on bee's that came to the conclusion that when bee's bump into eachother they make a little "Whoop" noise. IMAGINE BUMPING INTO BEE ORTHO AND HE JUST GOES "Whoop!"
AGSJSGAHSVSS
Ahem, sorry got carried away there for a sec. Bee's are also very protected of their hive and other bees in said hive, so I can't help but imagine if Yuu gets picked on Ortho immediately just pulls out the laser beams. Bee's can also smell fear. Giving bee Ortho this trait is like giving a toddler a glock and telling them to go do a crime. It is both horrifying and hilarious at the same time.
Robot Bee Boy.
BeeBot that makes cute noises when bumping into things.
So very cute. I don't have much to add to that except look at this cute bee butt.
Tumblr media
Now...spooder Idia...
Did anyone else see Kar'niss from Baldr's Gate 3 and thought he was hella fine?
Tumblr media
What kind of spider would he be? If he's one of the fluffy kinds I love the idea of his floof matching his hair. Would he have multiple eyes? Fangs on top of having those already pointy teethies?
Did you know an interesting thing that bee's and some spiders have in common his helping with pollinating plants?
Hmm drider's are usually big and people in general already don't like regular spiders very much. Poor Idia is just going to keep getting more reasons to not leave his room. 😔Oh Jeez Jamil would prob freak out seeing him.
Man, Idia and Azul have it bad. For females of both of their kind if they don't kill you after sex cuz doing the diddly works up an appetite, they might kill males that they simply rejected...or just because they got too close.
Another thing that both male octopuses and spiders have been shown to do to lower the risk is present their possible mate with food. Azul's an amazing cook with his own restaurant and Idia has a surplus of every kind of snack/junk food you can think of so at least they have that going.
Still, I would like to think that even if that happens with their kind in that world it's not nearly as bad or quite as common. Funny though to think of Idia screeching when he sees you and tossing a few bags of gummies and chips at you.
Also....to avoid getting eaten after sex some male spiders will actually tie the female up in his web and set her free after. Do with that info what you will.
Some spiders also do a mating dance, but you have a snowball's chance in hell of seeing him do that.
Still, it's just more things that get these types of nonhuman boys thinking that you the little would be the best choice when it comes to finding a mate. AMAB? Cool. AFAB? Well, human ones don't cannibalize so it's all good....well once the guys learned that they don't.
Plus, once he gets to actually know you and see how you're the least threatening thing in the school things will be easier.
Once he's comfortable around you get to see something amazing...
That he's a snarky little shit with so much sass. He's a weird combination of having issues with self-loathing while also having an ego.
One time you tried to bite him for mouthing off and he was legit scared for a sec but once he saw those little teeth of yours couldn't even make a scratch on the exoskeleton on his arm, he gets super freaking smug, and now he's even more of a shit when teasing you.
One of the cool things is that you can legit ride him places cuz he big spooder. It's too bad it rarely if ever happens with being a shut in.
He'll still let you sit on him like that when you guys are in his room.
A cool thing he can do is climb on walls and ceilings, does it often when trying to sneak to the vending machines on campus without being seen. He has unfortunately been seen once or twice though and it scared the hell out of the poor student to see a giant freaking spider on the ceiling and almost made Idia drop his snacks.
His webs are pretty and glowy, he kind of has them around his room set up like fairy light.
Weird fact, spiders can taste with their feet.
Cute fact, some spiders will keep a frog as a pet. Frog helps keep the spider's eggs from getting eaten and the spider protects the frog from other things.
Tumblr media
I'm kind of picturing Idia as the spider and you as the frog. You are his emotional support human that he keeps close when he has to leave his lair.
He unintentionally gives you scary dog privileges.
Imagine working your shift at Twisted McDonald and a little human comes up to you with this big-ass sharp-toothed spider dude behind them, you are scared out of your mind but then the human says "Excuse me, he asked for no pickles."

Pregame v3 au where I basically rewrite all of it in this fic
Warning very long post
So following the reopening of Hope's Peak Academy, with Makoto as headmaster (following the end of the dr3 anime), new students are scouted for the 79th class. The talents they end up recruiting are largely for the sake of rebuilding society after the tragedy. They looked for talents that would help the environment, the people, and society as a whole recover with better systems in place.
Ecosystem Team
Lead by Aoi Asahina
Members:
Gonta Gokuhara, Ultimate Entomologist
Responsible for helping maintain the huge garden within Hope’s Peak Academy grounds, caring for various plants to attract and house pollinators and restoring populations of the insects and critters that are important to the balance of the ecosystem and food production.
Rantaro Amami, Ultimate Adventurer
Part of the main search and rescue team, sailing out to find city ruins and explore them or touch base with developing cities recovering from the Tragedy and get them in touch with FF/HPA for any future assistance. Still searching for his sisters during these trips. Survivalist, mapping, and navigation expert.
Kirumi Tojo, Ultimate Maid
Does as she's asked to help clean up environmental destruction. Acts as a kickass support wherever she's needed, and helps to maintain the HPA building and other facilities.
Social Team
Lead by Makoto Naegi and Yasuhiro Hagakure
Members:
Kaede Akamatsu, Ultimate Pianist
Writes and plays new pieces of music to perform to the survivors of the Tragedy and restore hope within them
Angie Yonaga, Ultimate Artist
Creates new art pieces that inspire others to create as an outlet for their despair to make way for hope
Tenko Chabashira, Ultimate Neo Aikido Master
Practices and spreads the teachings of Neo Aikido as a method of self defense, as well as a way to get in touch with emotions and physically work out those emotions
Himiko Yumeno, Ultimate Magician
Comes up with and performs elaborate tricks to restore wonder and hope in the audience, it helps to know there's a little bit of magic still left in the world
Subteam in Towa City led by Toko Fukawa and Komaru Naegi
Societal Team
Lead by Byakuya Togami and Kyoko Kirigiri
Members:
Korekiyo Shinguji, Ultimate Anthropologist
Uses his expertise and research of other cultures to assist in building a stronger society that is less susceptible to the kind of collapse that happened with the Tragedy, largely focusing on the social and cultural aspects of these structures.
Miu Iruma, Ultimate Inventor
Uses her vast knowledge to design and create inventions that will help with the destruction and pollution of the planet and make it livable and more accessible for the survivors of the Tragedy
Shuichi Saihara, Ultimate Detective
Kirigiri's apprentice. Assists with rebuilding a better society in regards to laws and systems put in place by the government to support the people to lessen crime and preventing a repeat of the Tragedy.
No team:
K1-B0, Ultimate Robot
Often hanging out with Miu to further her talent research as well as his own, seeing how far he can push himself and how lifelike he can become as an android. His existence is really what makes him Ultimate.
Kaito Momota, Ultimate Astronaut
Continues his Astronaut training and researches celestial phenomenons purely for the joy of exploring the universe and having more knowledge about its vastness
Ryoma Hoshi, Ultimate Tennis Pro
HPA bailed him out of juvie to study his tennis skills and his participation on the recovery teams would serve as public service. Helps out wherever he's needed, prefers the Ecosystem Team.
Maki Harukawa, Ultimate Assassin
Occasionally called out with the Social team to apprehend particularly difficult opponents still under the influence of Junko and Ultimate Despair. Most of the time, the academy is just a safe space for her to relax and train her mind and body.
Tsumugi Shirogane, Ultimate Cosplayer
HPA is a safe haven for her after being rescued from a city completely decimated by the Tragedy, and she spreads her love of cosplay to others looking for a little escapism in the hellish world they've suffered through.
Kokichi Ouma, Ultimate Supreme Leader (?)
No one really knows what his talent is. The Future Foundation tracked his movements backwards and found he had several run-ins with the Remnants of Despair and even Kamukura when they were still inflicting despair upon the world. Somehow, he managed to charm his way out of danger each time. Kyoko found him and took him in, making him a ward of HPA and FF. HPA is his home more than anything now, though his fellow students don't know that.

Does anyone else ever think abt the worldbuilding of eggnancy bc I do frequently... eggpreg sexy but what do yall think happens to the eggs once they're laid...
My personal pet headcanon is that it works like plant reproduction. You pollinate the pussy and the egg is a seed and you plant it in the fertile cybertronian soil (mineral dust and energon)
Couple centuries later a new robot sprouts from the dirt fully formed. À la cabbage patch kid

Ladies and gentlemen
Here they are:
Winx mythix redesigns are FINALLY done!
So for the main idea for all the transformations, I completely disgarded the ‚prom dress‘ ideas cus
1. They looked nothing like prom dresses
2. They didn't even look like prom dresses
3. Did I mention that they were hideous?
4. They are hideous
So I went a different way.
I asked myself "what do I see when I hear the word 'fire fairy'?"
A fairy with red hair like Bloom?
A fairy made of literal flames?
A person with molten lava as hair?
There is no right to wrong with mythical beings, everyone can interpret them in their own way. So I took that idea and made them more 'in tune' with their own elements!
I left out their wands for now since I wasn't sure what to do with them.
Tumblr media
With bloom, I went with the idea of a Fire dancer. Her wings are similar to her mythix one. I tried to make her skin resemble lava and I think I screwed up that part but eh.
For me, being a sky Fairy, I went with a light pastelly sky warrior theme. Speedy, agile and sparkly! I also made the skin slightly transparent cus I thought it would look cool :>
Tumblr media
Flora ofc had to be the pretty one. I made her resemble a butterfly, her feet, knees, hands and shoulders are covered with pollen, so she can even pollinate flowers!
Aisha also has a more warrior theme going on. With water hair and even webs on her fingers and ears. Her Main Accessoires are corals and tiny teardrop shaped pearls
Tumblr media
Stella ofc has to be one with the sun and moon. I liked the flower she has in her concept mythix design so I gave that back to her. It's a little hard to see but I also gave her tiny blue star freckles :3
Tecna just had to be a robot I'm sorry. She doesn't emotionally change tho ofc. Regardless of her metallic limbs, she has a very human heart and looks badass as a traveling robot ready to kick ass
Tumblr media
Musa and Roxy were a little more tricky.
I wanted to show off Musa's Chinese heritage and combined that with a Dirigent. I'm just glad that the combo went really well in my opinion.
Roxy was a lot harder. I eventually settled with a deer-like appearance. And yes she's freaking out the first time she sees her legs turned into that of a satyrs.
But here they are, the Mythix redesigns!
What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments!
I'm sorry it took so long but I always try to keep my promises!

Parahn is a Makuta who specializes in passive Rahi- the little, cute ones. The harmless or near-harmless ones. The ones who pollinate the plants, who make up the bottom of the food chain, who sing from the treetops, who buzz around a Matoran's face while he works.
When the Plan was announced, when the Makuta were picking sides between the two options for leader, no one had noticed Parahn sprint out of the room. By the time the Makuta had finished up the meeting that would change the destiny of the Mata Nui, Parahn had gathered his lab supplies on a skiff and was gone from the island.
He fled to the Southern Islands, where he was hunted by the Order, the Brotherhood, and Dark Hunters hired by both sides. The moment an outside boot or clawed foot stepped on whatever island on which he was currently residing, he'd be gone to the next.
Eventually, Teridax decided the chase was a waste of time- he'd deal with Parahn later, once he was god of the Universe.
The Order realised something as well- the Rahi Parahn creates are the bottom of the food chain… but there needs to be a bottom of the food chain. They called off their search as well, acknowledging that Parahn's presence was actually critically important to the Universe. They attempted to station guards for him, or reach out in any sort of contact to explain their interest in alliance, but he fled from these attempts as well.
Finally, the day came in which Teridax was the complete ruler of the Universe. Had Parahn fled the robot by this point? Was he still in the Southern Islands? No one knew. The one thing known, was that Teridax never did kill Parahn.
For, by the time Teridax was the Great Spirit Robot…
… He had forgotten that Parahn even existed.

@tomorrowsgardennc tagged me in a garden ask game they made, so here we go!
🌱 current garden 🌱
what season is it currently?
Winter!
how's the weather been? normal or unusual?
Last week had a false spring so I let my citrus outside briefly, but now they're forecasting 8 inches of snow for next week 😬
what's growing the most successfully?
Currently? Garlic is all I have left, they're getting pretty big despite the temps
what's struggling the most?
I had to compost a lot of my cabbage- earlier in winter they took some harsh frost damage, they were alright for a little bit but eventually the remaining ones rotted
any garden animals?
hundreds of birds, birds all day! I got a bird identification book for christmas, "Birds of the Carolinas Field Guide" by Stan Tekiela, and I love identifying the ones that get close enough! I know for sure there are cardinals, blue jays, and northern mockingbirds, but there are so many I don't recognize that I can't get a good look at. there's also a big old mama cat who wanders in to play in my woodchips every once and while <3
how much space are you growing in?
so my 'garden space' is about 10,000 sq ft, but that includes my paths and negative space. I think the size of my raised vegetable beds are around 1,500? but only half of those are filled in, it took 12 yards of compost to fill half. Aside from my raised beds, I have native perennial beds that are another 300sqft probably, and a big ol 300sqft wildflower prairie area currently dormant and full of sleeping pollinators
are you happy with that space, or do you want more?
I'm very with the space I have, it's just a matter of filling it out now. I have a plan for the rest, but it's a lot of work for one person so everything I've done is piecemeal. Once spring begins and my perennials start blooming and the wildflowers start poking up I'll know if I did a good job last year!
✨️ future garden ✨️
what's next on the to-do list for the garden?
I need to finish putting the new woodchips all over my paths, I got a dump from the power company cutting down a neighbor's tree but I still haven't used it all because of how much work shoveling is. this was back in June or July as well, so many of the woodchips are decomposed enough to use as mulch in the beds! but I have to get the woodchips out of there so I can schedule the compost dump for the other half of my raised beds.
new plants you want to try and grow?
I want to spec hard into cut flowers this year, I stocked up on clearance rosebushes in winter and ordered lots of flower seeds, I really want to save my beautiful flowers and give them as gifts, maybe even give them to someone I met at a vendor fair so she can sell them as arrangements.
new garden skills you want to learn?
nothing in particular, but man every plant is a brand new skillset. It's hard to keep all this knowledge in my head when I'm only growing something 1/4th of the year, I feel like I have to watch an hour of youtube videos on everything I'm growing just to remind myself of everything I forgot in the last year.
new tools you need to buy?
a damn boston dynamics robot to shovel all my compost for me
I need a new tree lopper because I broke my last one pruning the apple tree (FISKARS PowerGear Super Pruner/Lopper, avoid unless it's on a really good sale, I think mine was $10 or something on clearance. the whole thing except the blade is plastic and it broke in one year, very bad tool.)
I was also thinking about getting a smaller soil blocker? I have the intermediate sized one but I don't have one of the tiny ones to start seeds in. even though I have 100% failure with soil blocks so far, I haven't given up, although i'm not rushing out to buy more either.
what needs to be built?
nothing! that was why I went so hard last year building all my raised beds and the brick path and the pergola, now I just get to enjoy growing!
although I did see a youtube video about turning scrap wood into seed trays, so I'll probably do that for fun since I have loads of cedar fence planks leftover
what needs to be cleaned up?
everything 😔😔 add new woodchips everywhere, silage tarp my empty beds, the wildflowers are just a field of 3' sticks that I'll have to cut down after the pollinators wake up in spring, and the perennial bed is 60% weeds right now that I'll have to pull. loads of maintenance to keep everything shipshape
📝 dream garden 📝
top of your wishlist?
a parterre flower garden in the last big spot of empty grass in my garden area, with a beautiful vintage water feature in the middle!
first plant you're buying if you win the lottery?
this big japanese maple that one of my local nurseries has had for 3 years. It's like 600 dollars and it's in this massive pot the size of a full bathtub but it's so strikingly beautiful. I believe it's a Acer palmatum 'Musashino', but I could be thinking of a different one. They have plenty of varieties and sizes, but this one is basically fully mature in a pot.
if you could change growing zones, which one would it be and why?
I think I'm a fan of 8, I just wish the winters were more predictable.
what do you want to grow, but can't? why not?
👀 admit it... 👀
how many spare nursery pots you have:
not enough! I have plenty of reusable 6-cells and 10x20s, but nearly all of my little individual up-potting pots are in use. I do have about a dozen 2 quart pots from buying perennials though.
how many plants are still in it's original container and need to be planted:
none, but I have about 12 bare root trees from the arbor day foundation that are wintering indoors at the moment.
how many seed packets do you have:
I did a lot of cleaning (and donating) to get rid of my unused seeds, so I have maybe 40 or 50 currently?
how many more seeds did you buy this year anyway: 40 or 50 :^)
💚 garden favorites 💚
favorite flower plant?
used to be lilies, of any kind but once we adopted cats and found how a single grain of pollen is deathly toxic to them I immediately renounced lilies and their wiles.
I don't have a new favorite yet but that's what this year is all about!
favorite vegetable plant?
Sweet Peas, I just love how they look and taste, how quick and ready to eat they are. The flowers are beautiful too, although they lose all their color after being pressed unfortunately
favorite fruit plant?
Peach trees, I think. Fresh warm peaches are so insanely good, and I love the color of the bark on the trees and how the leaves look.
favorite landscaping plant?
Muhly Grass, always makes me smile
favorite pollinator?
bzzzzz bees every bee is precious, and I will photograph every bee I come across
favorite garden noise or texture?
wind through the trees or mockingbird calls
favorite gardening book or blog or podcast?
I'm always going through phases with who I like to listen to, and it changes every winter because I'm never in the mood to listen about californians' permanent growing seasons when I'm in the dead of winter BUT
Self Sufficient Me is the reason I'm gardening in the first place, I came across his videos about gardening in raised beds probably a decade ago and that's what first planted the seed in my head about starting a garden to begin with. Also he's on tumblr at selfsufficientme
Patrick Goes Native is a new channel with basically no subscribers or views but I hang on his every word because he really cares about native plants and has a beautiful landscape and great cinematography, I think everyone should check him out!
Lisa Likes Plants is also super passionate about native plants and landscape design, her videos helped me decide on some of the plants I put in my native perennial garden.
I like Jacques in the Garden even though he's with Epic Gardening, he has a totally different vibe from the other guy and Jacques in the Garden is his personal channel.
Bre Ellis has about the same sized vegetable garden as I do so I listen to her often, and she does a lot of preservation of what she grows, which is something I struggle with
Regenerative Gardening with Blossom & Branch Farm runs a cut flower farm and her videos are most of the inspiration for me wanting to start my own cut flower journey!
Craig Lehoullier doesn't have a youtube channel as far as I know, but any time a podcaster or organization features him I tune in, he always has great insight on growing tomatoes.

INVENTATO UN ROBOT SUBACQUEO CHE SALVA I PESCI DALLA PESCA INDISCRIMINATA
Tumblr media

The shape of the bee larvae capped cell determines their gender role
The shape of the honey bee larvae 🐝 cell capping, determines their gender and role in the hive. Cell capping is a unique process that worker bees use to produce drone bees, worker bees, and a new queen for the hive.
