Hey, look! Esc-a-pay. I wonder what that means. That’s funny, it’s spelled just like the word ‘escape’.

Finding Nemo, The Hand-Crafted Mosaic
Finding Nemo, The Hand-Crafted Mosaic
A sweeping 30-foot-long hand-crafted mosaic depicting an underwater scene from the Disney•Pixar animated film Finding Nemo can be found on the wall inside Cabanas on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

The 8-foot-tall mosaic re-creates the big blue world of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef with approximately 200 colors of Venetian enamel. The glass pieces were broken into irregular…

Cities lost to time and half-remembered civilizations, discovered deep in the mountains of the Himalayas, the Amazonian rainforest or at the bottom of the sea, are a familiar trope in steam- and dieselpunk fiction.
Drawing on the expeditions of Percy H. Fawcett and Heinrich Schliemann, the writings of James Churchward and Theodore Illion and the esotericism of Helena Blavatsky, W. Scott-Elliot and Rudolph Steiner, both genres exploit the half-real and fully imagined tales of ancient races that supposedly roamed the Earth millennia ago.
Mu
James Churchward’s map of the lost continent of Mu
James Churchward, a British-born Sri Lankan tea planter, claimed in his 1926 book The Lost Continent of Mu, Motherland of Man to have learned of an ancient Pacific civilization from an Indian priest, who taught him the language of the Naacal: a people who, according to French explorer Augustus Le Plongeon, lived in the Pacific tens of thousands of years ago.
Translating ancient tablet inscriptions, Churchward uncovered the history of Mu, the homeland of the Naacal people: a vast continent in the Pacific Ocean, stretching from the Marianas in the east to Easter Island in the west and Hawaii in the north to the Cook Islands in the south.
When volcanic eruptions sunk the once-flourishing civilization, the people of Mu spread out across the world. Ancient Egypt, Greece, Central America and India all trace their origins to Mu, according to Churchward.
Like so many lost worlds, Mu was, in Churchward’s telling, a land of plenty. Tropical weather, beautiful plains and valleys, slow-running streams and rivers, “shallow lakes bejewelled with sacred lotus flowers in emerald green settings” and “tiny hummingbirds, glistening like living jewels in the rays of the sun.”
Another trope we’ll find in later ancient-civilization myths: the white man descending from Mu’s priestly, patrician class. According to Churchward, Mu’s darker-skinned inhabitants knew their place in the racial hierarchy. I’m afraid this won’t be the last time white men glean the origins of their “master race” from ancient Asiatic wisdom.
Mu appears in several Japanese cartoons and video games, Marvel Comics and H.P. Lovecraft’s story short, “Out of the Aeons” (1935).
Lemuria
Amazing Stories (June 1945)
Thongor and the Wizard of Lemuria
Another sunken continent, this one in the Indian Ocean. Nineteenth-century zoologists postulated Lemuria’s existence to account for fossils found in India and Madagascar but not in Africa and the Middle East. Their theory has been superseded by plate tectonics. India and Madagascar were once part of the same landmass (Gondwana), but it broke apart; it did not sink into the sea.
Before it was discredited, the Lemuria theory gave credence to the Tamil myth of Kumari Kandam, a continent that allegedly connected India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Australia in ancient times. Helena Blavatsky and other theosophists believed it. Charles Webster claimed to have received the ancient wisdom of Lemuria from Theosophical Masters by “astral clairvoyance”. James Bramwell called the Lemurians one of the “root races” of humanity, the other two being the Atlanteans and the Aryans.
Richard Sharpe Shaver popularized the theory of Lemuria in his short stories for Amazing Stories. Lin Carter, another American fantasy author, based several of his stories in Lemuria as well, including The Wizard of Lemuria (1965). The Agent 13 novels of Flint Dille and David Marconi, which were written as a homage to 1930s pulp fiction, feature a mysterious Brotherhood founded by survivors of Lemuria plotting world events from the shadows. Lemuria is mentioned in Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. The 2014 video game Child of Light is set in a mystical land called Lemuria, but it appears to have no relation to the real-world myth.
Hyperborea and Thule
Art by Vsevolod Ivanov
Hyperborea and Thule were both mythical lands in the Far North. The former was known to the Greeks as a land were the sun never set. Thule is commonly associated with Greenland, Iceland and Norway. Occultists in interwar Germany identified it as the homeland of the Aryan master race.
They weren’t the first ones. Jean Sylvain Bailly, a French astronomer and revolutionary, pointed out that, in most ancient mythologies, races originate in the north and then migrate south. William Fairfield Warren argued in Paradise Found (1885) that humanity once inhabited the North Pole and that various mythical lands — Atlantis, Hyperborea, the Garden of Eden — are all folk memories of the same thing. Warren rejected Darwinism and believed the Great Flood had submerged mankind’s Arctic home. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, an Indian nationalist, believed the Vedic people migrated to India from the Arctic region during the last Ice Age.
In the 2009 video game Wolfenstein, the Paranormal Division of the SS (based on the real-life Ahnenerbe) is investigating ruins of the vanished Thule civilization.
Searching for images of “Hyperborea” turns up the artwork of Vsevolod Ivanov, who believed the “Vedic Rus” descended from an alien race. Weird Russia has more.
Atlantis
The ultimate lost civilization. Invented as an allegory by Plato, Atlantis has inspired too many books, movies and video games to count. Wikipedia has a complete list. I’ll focus focus on the most steam- and dieselpunky ones.
We have already met the theosophists, who believed the Atlanteans were one of several great pre-Flood civilizations. “Atlantean” became a shorthand for supreme ancient race. Ignatius L. Donnelly imagined an Atlantean Empire lording over large parts of America and Europe in his Atlantis: the Antediluvian World (1882). The Nazis traced the origins of the Aryan Nordic race in Atlantis.

Professor Aronnax and Captain Nemo visit the remains of Atlantis in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea (1870).
In H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Temple” (1920), a German submarine discovers Atlantis when it sinks to the bottom of the Atlantic during World War I.
In The Maracot Deep (1929), Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, describes Atlantis as a high-tech society that is inhabited by people who have adapted to life under the sea. In Carl Barks’ “The Secret of Atlantis” (1954), Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck and his nephews discover a similar underwater civilization.
Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge discover Atlantis in “The Secret of Atlantis” (1954)
Fantastic (August 1961)
In Robert A. Heinlein’s Lost Legacy (1941), Atlantis is a colony of Mu. In the 1982-83 anime The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Atlantis and Mu destroyed each other with nuclear weapons.
David MacLean Parry’s The Scarlet Empire (1906) Poul Anderson’s “Goodbye, Atlantis!” (1961) both feature Atlantis as something of a communist dictatorship. In the latter, it is destroyed by vengeful gods.
The 1992 video game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis shows Nazis searching for Atlantis technology.

Disney’s 2001 Atlantis: The Lost Empire featured an early-twentieth-century expedition to find Atlantis in a Nautilus-inspired submarine called the Ulysses.
Atlantis is discovered in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), which is based on Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island.

Plenty of artists have created their own versions of Atlantis. Here are three examples by Flavio Bolla, Raphael Lacoste and “Gaius31duke“.
Agartha, Shambhala and Hollow Earth
Shambhala is a mythical kingdom in Central Asia or Tibet, supposedly the refuge of the survivors of Lemuria or Hyperborea and a center of spiritual enlightenment.
Jean-Claude Frère wrote that the survivor of Hyperborea settled in a Central Asian city called Agartha, which sunk into the Earth as a result of another catastrophe. In his telling, Shambhala was founded by dissident Hyperboreans who followed the path of the “Black Sun”.
Alexandre Saint-Yves d’Alveydre told much the same story in his Mission de l’Inde en Europe (1886), which for the first time connected the myth of Agartha with that of a Hollow Earth.
At the Earth’s Core
Hollow Earth Expedition
The idea that the Earth’s poles provide entrance to the underworld is an ancient one. Edmond Halley (who discovered Halley’s Comet) brought it into the modern world in 1692. The myth inspired Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Pellucidar novels, among others.
Iron Sky: The Coming Race concept art
More recently, it has featured in such dieselpunk fiction as the role-playing game Hollow Earth Expedition (2006) and Iron Sky: The Coming Race (2018), whose title is drawn from Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s 1871 theosophist novel.
Something these Hollow Earths have in common, aside from being popular with Nazis: dinosaurs.
Shangri-La and Xanadu
Lost Horizon
Shangri-La in Lost Horizon (1937)
Return to Xanadu (1991)
James Hilton was probably inspired by the myth of Shambhala when he invented Shangri-La in Lost Horizon (1933). It also sounds similar to the pleasure land described by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the poem “Kubla Khan”, which was based on the old Chinese capital of Xanadu.
Lost Horizon was adapted into a movie twice, in 1937 and 1973. Shangri-La’s appearance in the first inspired the Valley of Tralla La in Carl Barks’ 1954 Uncle Scrooge comic. Keno Don Rosa later revealed Tralla La to be Xanadu in his 1991 sequel to the story.
Shangri-La in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Shangri-La also appears in dieselpunk favorite Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004).
El Dorado and the Seven Cities of Gold
Painting of El Dorado
There are several American city-of-gold myths, the most famous ones being El Dorado and the Seven Cities of Gold. The former was supposed to be hidden in the jungles of Colombia; the latter in New Mexico. Numerous expeditions were undertaken by adventurers and conquistadors during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in search of both.
Scrooge McDuck and his nephews discover both lost lands: in Carl Barks’ “The Seven Cities of Cibola” (1954) and Don Rosa’s The Last Lord of Eldorado (1998). The latter makes reference to the El Dorado expeditions of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, Nicolaus Federmann and Sebastián de Belalcázar.
The Last Lord of Eldorado
The Lost City of Z
British adventurer Percy Fawcett searched for a similar city in the Amazon rainforest known as “Z”. His quest was turned into a book by David Grann (2009) and a movie by James Gray (2016).
In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), El Dorado and the legendary Inca city of Paititi are revealed to be the same place, called Akator.
Lost cities and civilizations in #steampunk and #dieselpunk Cities lost to time and half-remembered civilizations, discovered deep in the mountains of the Himalayas, the Amazonian rainforest or at the bottom of the sea, are a familiar trope in steam- and dieselpunk fiction.

K E Osborn

Australian author K E Osborn was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. With a background in graphic design and a flair for all things creative, she felt compelled to write the story brewing in her mind.

Get Rocked? (The Next Generation Series) (Volume 2) by K E Osborn (2015-08-16) By K E Osborn
Writing gives her life purpose. It makes her feel, laugh, cry, and get completely enveloped with the characters and their story lines. She feels completely at home when writing and wouldn’t consider doing anything else. She wrote Get Rocked? (2015).
What are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?
The Secret Garden – Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Secret Garden (HarperClassics) By Frances Hodgson Burnett
When I think of books from my childhood, this is the one that I always remember. It constantly sat beside me on my bedside table, and when it came out as a movie, I was so excited to see it. I loved it that much.
Fifty Shades of Grey – EL James
Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, Book 1) By E L James
This series had such a significant impact on not only my career, but I believe the entire romance industry as it is now. Without this series paving the way for romance to be acceptable, I’m not sure I would have gotten into writing. Reading FSOG gave me the courage to write the stories brewing in my mind. I know I, and a lot of other authors out there, have a lot to thank EL James for.
Thoughtless – SC Stephens
Thoughtless By S.C. Stephens
This series is what dawned the rock genre phase I went through. After reading Thoughtless and loving the emotions it pulled from me, plus my love of music, I wanted to emulate that in my own stories. Now, I have four different rocker series published, and it all grew from reading Thoughtless.
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?
An ergonomic keyboard and mouse. Honestly, you need the best of everything when you sit at a desk for eight hours a day.
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
It has taught me to be resilient. When you think things aren’t going your way, or that nothing is ever going to get better, things will always have a way of working themselves out in the end. There will always be a fix to a problem. Or if there isn’t, worrying over it isn’t going to resolve it either. If it can’t be fixed, and it isn’t life or death, then you can’t continue to stress over it. If it’s not going to cause you financial strain, cause you medical issues or your imminent death–let it go. When you let things go, you can work harder, and you become more efficient. When you can do that, things naturally fall into place, and you become more successful.
Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?
‘Just keep swimming’from Finding Nemo- is one I live by every day.
This author stuff is damn hard work. You need to push yourself every day to keep relevant, to keep up with the market, to just keep writing. So my motto has been for quite some time, to ‘Just keep swimming.’ Keep up the good fight and never give up, no matter how hard it gets, because in the end, I love what I do, and for every bad day there’s a dozen more that are great.
What is one of the best investment in a writing resource you’ve ever made?
The Emotion Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi
What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
My unusual habit is when I sit down to write first thing in the morning, I have to have a cup of tea. I feel like if I don’t have one, my routine isn’t in order, and I get up in the end and make one anyway. It’s a habit now, and something that’s kind of ritualistic for me. If I don’t have my cup of tea, I can’t start for the day.
Weird, I know.
In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life?
Self-editing is a must before sending it to anyone. Never send a draft to anyone, unless you are happy with what it contains.
Also, trying to eat healthily and exercise (though this doesn’t always happen in a busy author’s day, unfortunately).
What advice would you give to a smart, driven aspiring author? What advice should they ignore?
ALWAYS send your manuscript to a reliable editor. Don’t ever think you’re good enough to not have your book edited and proofread. No one is ever that good. They are there not only to find your grammar and spelling mistakes but to check a variety of things we can miss (like timeline issues, inconsistencies, etc.) Once you have found a good editor, never let them go.
Make sure you have an amazing cover artist working with you on your cover. After all, the cover is the first thing a reader will see. If your cover is subpar, it represents the writing inside. Think about that. Your branding is everything. You might be the next ‘big thing,’ but if your cover is average, readers will judge your writing based on that fact alone. Image is everything in this industry – so branding should be at the forefront of your mind. Readers need to be able to spot you in a sea of covers, so always having the same branding can help them find you more easily.
If you haven’t invested some money in your book with a great cover, compelling blurb, and sharp editing, then, unfortunately, you will get what you paid for in return. You are a small business, and you will need to spend money to make money.
Ignore people telling you to take out loans to advertise on social media. Spend what you can afford. Obviously, the more you can spend, the better the return will be, but don’t fall into traps where you need to take out repayments to finance your advertising. That’s dangerous territory. Do what you can. If you can add a little extra into your marketing budget, I recommend it, but don’t blow the bank in a way you can’t manage.
What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession often?
Selling books at $1.99, this is the dead zone of marketing. Readers don’t seem to buy books at this price. Maybe it’s because they don’t see value in a book at $1.99. Always remember, you are worth the price readers will pay for your books. Never have a book at 99c unless it’s for promotional reasons.
Beware of stepping away from your brand and genre, always keep it in mind. Even if it means having a pen name for a genre that is too far away from what you are known for.
In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)?
For me, I’m the opposite. I need to learn to say yes. I’m so busy working with my writing and on my author career that I never say yes to social invitations or distractions. I need to work on my work/life balance, and as of next year, I intend to focus on this more. I will be including work/life balance into my business plan to make sure I don’t overload myself like I have over the past few years.
What marketing tactics should authors avoid?
As I mentioned previously, the $1.99 price point is a dead zone. Selling books at 99c – remember you are worth more.Free eBooks, unless you have a big deal with one of the large promotional companies and the book is the first in a series of books, so you can gain the on-sales from the free promotional book.
You should never release a book without a marking plan. Think about how you can make your book visible in the world of social media, and in any other way you can think of that will interest readers. Think about the tactics you can make it known you have released a book.
What new realizations and/or approaches have helped you achieve your goals?
I think when I decided to stick to writing to the market, I found my niche (MC Romance). I’m lucky that the genre I adore writing is also very popular at the moment, so when I write to the market, I find my sales and marketing methods tend to boost a lot higher than my other books.
When you feel overwhelmed or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?
I tend to read. If I am having trouble thinking or with motivation, I go back to basics. Learn from my peers. See what they’re doing. What their stories are about. See how their writing flows. Try to pull inspiration from them. Then generally, that will pull my love back and get me back in the mood as it were.
Any other tips?
This industry isn’t easy.
Equally so, it isn’t for everyone.
You need to have a tough skin to be an author. Reviewers are tough. Editors are critical. But even worse are your own demons that continuously tell you you’re not good enough. But, if you can pull yourself through all that, there’s this bright light. A spark. That glimmer of brilliance that is your beacon of creativity, demanding her voice. If you can let her free and let her develop into a beautiful, dark, or angst-filled story, whatever it may be–then you’re on the right path. And let me tell you that path is a wondrous and joyful journey. If you can get to those two words- The End - that is the most powerful feeling in the world, and I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

Disneyland with kids is amazing. It might sound silly but when we first found out that we were going to be dads one of the very first thoughts that went through my head was “ hooray! Someday we could to take our kid to Disneyland!” If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland or already have one on the books doing Disneyland with kids is one of the most special memories you’ll ever make.
So what do you do on your first trip to Disneyland with kids? Well, there are rides you’ll do and then there are characters you’ll meet, but there’s more to it. We’re going to share our favorite attractions to do with toddlers and with big kids as well as the easiest options for family fun in both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, but we’ll start with the original.
Prepping for Disneyland with kids
If you haven’t read it yet go check out our article on planning and prepping for a trip to Disneyland with kids. Basically you want to decide ahead of time what the most important experiences to you are (fireworks, parades…) as well as make sure you got your dad toolbox ready, AKA your backpack of supplies and the Disneyland app.
What to bring into the park:
smartphone with a great camera (love the Pixel!)
lots of simple snacks ready at a moment’s notice
your own stash of wipes and paper towels
light jackets for everyone (even rain ponchos)
the Disneyland app loaded onto your phone
sunblock and hats
As long as you have the supplies with you the rest of the day is going to be a breeze. Seriously, the backpack/app combo is totally the ultimate Disney dad toolbox.
Disneyland’s FastPASS system
Disneyland uses the FASTPASS system which means that you can scan your entry ticket at different stations to get a pass for a shorter wait time for an attraction later in the day. If you want to leverage the system, go for it, but know that you can have just as much fun without it. If you’re using FASTPASSes, start your day by getting passes for what is most important to you to ensure that you’ll get to do that ride that day.
Tip: pay close attention to the time stamps on your FASTPASSes as they both say when you can return AND when your next FASTPASS will be available to get.
Disneyland Guide Land by Land
The Disneyland Resort has two parks (you probably know): Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. If you’re going to do only one, Disneyland with kids is the way to go. It has a great balance of attractions for really young guests as well as adults.
Tomorrowland Guide
Tomorrowland is a great place to start if you’re an adult. The main attraction being Space Mountain, it’s the perfect launch to a day. Bigger kids like Tomorrowland for its Star Wars theme attractions, from Star Tours to Jedi Training, the Star Wars Launch Bay to the Path of the Jedi. Who knows how this will all change when the newest addition to Disneyland opens in 2019: Star Wars Land.
For smaller kids though, you’ve got three really fun attractions: Finding Nemo Submarines, Autopia, and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters. Oh, and the Astro Orbiter… but that’ll make you nauseous.
Planning tip: hit Space Mountain and Finding Nemo first thing in morning or at the end of your day. The lines are super short if you’re there within the first hour of the Park being open.
Characters to meet
The highlight in Tomorrowland is within the Star Wars Launch Bay. Here you’ll be able to meet Chewbacca, Storm Troopers, and of course, Darth Vader. There are queues within the Launch Bay, but the atmosphere and Star Wars displays are pretty cool and you won’t mind waiting.
Fantasyland with Kids
Enter through the castle, just do it. We just did Disneyland with kids and I’ll tell you straight up, Fantasyland made the whole trip worth it. Here’s the big disclaimer though: not all of the rides in Fantasyland will be a hit with all ages. From a kid’s perspective Pinocchio, Snow White and Mr Toad’s Wild Ride are all strangely creepy. There was a fair amount of screaming.
Having said that, Peter Pan’s Flight, King Arthur’s Carrousel, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Tea Party were amazing with the kids.
Time saving tips: walking through Sleeping Beauty Castle is fast and easy and is a great way to occupy time if nobody has the patience to wait for lines. Also, the Storybook Land Canal Boats and Casey Jr’s Circus Train cover the same territory. Pick one and nobody will be the wiser if the other is skipped.
Feel special: if you ride King Arthur’s Carousel, ask the cast members at the attraction to point you towards the carousel horse named Jingles. This was Mary Poppins’ horse and is specially painted with her emblems.
Characters to meet
The characters we have most commonly met over the years, and this holds true today, are Alice and the Mad Hatter. They wander continually and are really spacey… always perfectly in character. This also makes is tricky to get a great pic with them because they’re genuinely distracted by EVERYTHING else. That’s okay though, the kids loved meeting them.
Pixie Hollow is also right by Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, so meeting Tinkerbell is a breeze. To snap pics with the many Princesses, you’ll have to stop by the Fantasy Faire just outside of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. They may also be wandering about, but there is a queue and process for a guaranteed Meet and Greet.
Tip: some kids need a buffer between them and characters. Ask if your kids want to be right next to these oddly familiar faces before they freak out.
Frontierland in the afternoon
There’s not a ton to Frontierland so if you’ve got only one day, don’t linger here. Big Thunder Mountain is the prime attraction to hit up and it really is awesome. It’s my personal favorite rollercoaster within Disneyland. The other main attraction of Frontierland is the Rivers of America where you can relax by the water, get on the water on the Mark Twain Riverboat, and explore Tom Sawyer Island.
Note: big changes are happening in Disneyland right now including revamping the Island and areas on the backside of the Rivers of America. Know that access to much of Frontierland’s space is limited while the Park undergoes updates and the addition of Star Wars Land.
Fronteirland is great for dining when you do Disneyland with kids. From the outdoor vendors with snacks to the restaurants, you’ll have lots of options and plenty of seating.
Top picks for dining in Frontierland: Rancho del Zocalo, Stage Door Cafe – both have simple menus and are easy with kids. Rancho del Zocalo has lots of seating, but the Stage Door Cafe does not. It’s a grab-and-go sort of place.
Characters to meet
There aren’t too many characters that roam through Frontierland, but Woody and Jessie are almost always a guarantee here or over in California Adventure by Toy Story Mania, and often Pocahontas winds her way around the river bend. The cool thing about Frontierland and its cast is actually the cowboys. If you’re lucky enough to catch one, the cowboy stand-up comics and shows are awesome and hilarious.
Adventureland: best spot in Disneyland with kids
Adventureland has long been our favorite place in Disneyland. Indiana Jones Adventure was the first scary ride I ever did as a kid, and now it’s one of my favorites as an adult. If you’re doing Disneyland with kids though, if they’re pretty young you may need to skip this one, because it’s a whole lot more thrilling than just a simple roller coaster. If the littles are daredevils though, let them check it out.
The best things about Adventureland though are the mellow attractions that are good for any age. If you’ve never done the Jungle Cruise with a toddler, you have to; it’s hilarious and so exciting for them. Tarzan’s Tree House is also a hit. Tarzan is one of our kids’ favorite movies, so getting to go through the tree house and see Tarzan and Jane and the animals, it was one of their favorite experiences in the Park.
Tip: the Jungle Cruise at night is really fun, so be sure to hit it both during the day and after dark.
Lastly, the Enchanted Tiki Room and its ridiculously cheezy singing birds and flowers is a must. We hung out in the Tiki courtyard before the show, watching all of the gods moving and talking. Then going in and actually watching the show, the kids were totally in awe.
Characters to meet
Moana. Seriously. Meeting Moana was at the top of our bucket list for Disneyland with kids and it was really perfect. They were dumbfounded when they saw her and they had so many questions. It was unforgettable.
New Orleans Square relaxation
On a hot day sitting on a bench by a fountain in New Orleans Square is just ideal. It’s one of the more calm and quiet areas of Disneyland and when you’ve got wild children, it totally mellows them out. The tighter street area of the Square is beautiful and a slice right out of NOLA, but for the relaxation, grab some beignets and sit until the grand old trees. This is one of the spots to let the smallest visitors grab a nap if needed, which can be important to maintain a happy time.
The attractions of New Orleans Square are all about chillin’ out too. Pirates of the Caribbean has a little thrill with two small drops (and you sometimes get wet, soaked), but for the most part is just a mellow boat ride everybody enjoys.
Note: even kids who love pirates might be spooked when face to face with them, FYI.
The Haunted Mansion is the other big attraction. It’s again, nice and mellow, but also children might be creeped out. It’s best during fall and winter when it’s set up as Haunted Mansion Holiday. Jack Skelington and the crew from the Nightmare Before Christmas take it over and it’s awesome! It’s fun with haunted jingle bells playing and all kinds of Halloweentown stuff. It’s one of the reasons we want to do Disneyland with kids next Christmas.
Characters to meet
Depending on the day of the week there may not be anybody to spot, but if you’re lucky a band of pirates might stroll through, including Captain Jack Sparrow. Also, this last trip we spotted Princess Tiana and Dr Facilier from the Princess and the Frog… because it takes place in New Orleans.
Tip: also watch for Princess Tiana and Dr Facilier also hanging out on the decks of the Mark Twain when it’s docked in Frontierland (close to New Orleans Square). And what’s more New Orleans than a beautiful old riverboat?
Critter Country fun
At the very end of Disneyland things get rustic. That’s where you’ll find Splash Mountain and the Winnie the Pooh ride. Pooh is cute and colorful and silly. It’s great for little kids and adults that have a soft spot for cute things. It’s a must if you’re with a child.
Note: Once upon a time the Country Bear Jamboree was where the Winnie the Pooh ride is. If you’re quick and know where to look, you can spot the talking taxidermy heads within the ride near the end, but you have to turn around and lean forward and break your neck to see them.
Splash Mountain is the big ticket item though. For all of the cute, singing animals within the old mountain there is plenty of thrill and creep-factor. Yes, you will get wet. Yes, there is a double drop in the dark. Yes, there is an ominous chorus or terror and despair before you take the big plunge. It’s all in good fun though and if you’ve got a brave kiddo, go for it. We took our oldest and he refuses to say he enjoyed any part of it… but he totally did. Ahh, Disneyland with kids…
Tip: this is a spot to get a FASTPASS, for sure. If it’s a rainy day, chances are the lines will be swift, but on a hot sunny summer day you’ll be so glad you got the shorter queue.
Characters to meet
They’ve created a really great setup to do a meet and greet with Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore. There is one queue to meet all three, much like meeting the Princesses. When it rains, they just shift the queue to be undercover at Pooh Corner and you still get to hug them all.
The other folks to watch for in Critter Country are Briar Bear and Briar Fox. They’re not always around, but when they are they like to roam and stop for pictures. They’re hilarious and act like doofy guys when you pose with them, so know that little kids might not be all up for a hug.
Tip: if you haven’t grabbed a Disney PhotoPASS card by the time you’re in Critter Country, get one from the cast members working with Pooh and friends. It’s a cool way to capture professional photos all around the park. Also, PhotoPASS cast members can help you by using your own camera to take pictures of your with characters and such, so leverage them.
Mickey’s Toontown (if you have the time)
On beyond It’s a Small World is Toon Town. I will say that it’s the coolest place and is visually amazing. You’re literally walking around in a cartoon world. There are some attractions in Toontown that kids may enjoy, including Gadget’s Go-Coaster and Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin, but the purpose of Toontown really is just being in such a whimsical place… and to meet Mickey Mouse.
Note: Toontown typically closes earlier than the rest of the Park, so if Disneyland with kids includes a visit here, check what time the land closes that day.
Characters to meet
This is why we enjoy Toon Town. Mickey Mouse, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Daisy, Pluto… you can meet all of them here in Toon Town. Mickey and Minnie’s houses aren’t just funny places to walk through and explore, but it’s where you’ll actually find them and meet them. Mickey’s house is extra cool with his Movie Barn out back. You actually get to meet him on set, and who knows what costume he’ll be wearing.
Note: DON’T SPOIL DISNEY MAGIC by telling your kids that fuzzy characters aren’t real or how Mickey Mouse’s house works. Let them figure it out. It’s half the fun of Disneyland with kids.
First time meeting Mickey Mouse…
First time meeting Mickey Mouse…
2nd time meeting Mickey Mouse
Hopefully our family guide to Disneyland with kids is helpful and you feel confident visiting the Happiest Place on Earth. Keeping realistic expectations about what you’ll be able to do and see in the Park is key to enjoying your time there with minimal stress. As an adult, you’ll have a nostalgic blast. As a parent, you’ll see Disneyland in a new way: through the eyes of your kids. You’ll love it and and your kids won’t forget the awesome time they had.
Want to pin it for your own Disneyland planning? Go for it!
Dads in Disneyland: family guide to fun inside the Happiest Place on Earth Disneyland with kids is amazing. It might sound silly but when we first found out that we were going to be dads one of the very first thoughts that went through my head was “ hooray!

The long-term survival of clownfish – made famous by the Hollywood movie Finding Nemo – depends more on the sea anemone neighbourhood they live in than on their own genes, according to a first-of-its-kind study which suggests that climate change may make it hard for both the fish and its host to survive.
The researchers, including those from…

Fulham 2-0 Everton: Tom Cairney and Ryan Babel see already relegated side heap misery on visitors
Scientists were dizzy this week with excitement about photographic evidence of a black hole, an entity whose appeal is so great is
Fulham & # 39; s goal mouth this season looked like something like being sucked ball after ball. Here at Craven Cottage we witnessed our own phenomenon.
For the first time in 2019, Scott Parker's side kept a clean slate. After winning two or more goals in their previous 13 games and having suffered nine consecutive losses, they won.

This was not a fluke either.
This was Fulham & # 39; s first appearance since their relegation from the Premier League.
This was Fulham & # 39; s first appearance since their demotion from the Premier League was confirmed. Maybe to know that their fate had taken away the pressure that had tormented them this season.
On paper this should have been simple. Everton pursued a fourth consecutive victory, after beating three London clubs in Chelsea, West Ham and Arsenal without disrupting.
Fulham would represent fishing in a barrel, but the Cottagers were the ones who came out of the shooting range. Within the first five minutes, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice on goal.
Moments later, Mitrovic received his third attempt. This time he had used his power to shake his marker in Phil Jagielka, but goalie Jordan Pickford was happy to see his shot directly at him.

Fulham's fans were in a happy mood, just as they were during their 4-1 defeat to Watford last week.
In the 20th minute we saw why they are ready for the second phase. Bernard took the ball and no player tried to close it. His next shot was saved by Sergio Rico.
Mitrovic then came close to scoring again. He stuck his head to the corner, but Pickford could tilt it with a somewhat dramatic dip in the air.
By the half hour, Fulham had tried five times, all through Mitrovic. The 24-year-old Serbian – a West Ham target this summer – caused all kinds of problems.
How, against a team that had allowed 76 goals in this match, most by a club in all European elite competitions, were they the ones on the ropes?

In the 42nd minute, Mitrovic came to the end of the impasse with this effort – but his header was saved well by goalkeeper hit a curling shot of 15 yards. Pickford was a spectator because the powerful attempt defeated him but not the woodwork. That was shot number seven of the striker.
The visitors had been paintless to say the least. There was no imagination, no fire in their stomachs. Richarlison had done little, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been anonymous
Whatever Silva did not have the desired effect.
Babel played a one-two with Mitrovic before squading the ball to Cairney, whose left foot shot of 18 yards defeated Pickford in the bottom corner.
Fulham Concierge Scott Parker now had a difficult decision to make. Mourinho would have been a handy person to ask for advice and the former Manchester manager was here, he looked unobtrusive with a cap hanging over his face
Everton thought they had their equalizer on the hour when Gylfi Sigurdsson found out Calvert-Lewin, who focused on the goal.
Fulham did not lean back, despite the fact that he was in charge. They tried to secure a second goal and grabbed it when Babel was played through Mitrovic. The former Liverpool striker had the pace to escape Everton & Seamus Coleman and then dumped the ball over Pickford for 2-0.
Fulham countered the 10th consecutive defeat – their worst run since 1962. Now they had daylight
On Fulham & # 39; s bench for substitutes stood Harvey Elliott, the boy of the academy who only turned 16 last week. For those who want to feel old, it was born in April 2003, before films such as Elf, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Rock School were even released.

Referee Lee Probert decided to add eight minutes extra time.
Andre Gomes should have seen red when the midfielder, clearly frustrated and well aware of what he was doing, stamped on Mitrovic. Probert missed it, but VAR would not be next season.
At the end, Everton couldn't make a late comeback. Finally Fulham had their first clean slate since December and their fans had a reminder of what it was like to win.
