📽️ Me Before You (2016)

This is a movie that is such a good representation of the book. So many book adaptations follow the basic storyline but not much else. There was obviously some stuff they had to change, but they followed the book really closely. Which means that the ending is still devastating. The casting was also perfect, especially the two main characters. This is a great movie to watch any time, but especially if you want to cry. It’s definitely a tearjerker.

Sex/nudity: 2/10 (kissing, some talk of sex and sexual joke)

Language: 2/10 (no f-words, mostly mild stuff)

Violence: 1/10 (references to suicide attempts)

Overall rating: 8/10

Okay guys, I’m really sorry, but this is going to be another vent piece rather than a proper essay. Once again, I’m here to despair about the inconsistency in Coyle’s comic design. 

So, as we can see, Coyle's uniform is based on the New Mexico State Police uniform

This image in particular.

Everything is present and correct, except that Coyle's uniform has a mandarin collar rather than an open one. It really bugs me because while the image has been manipulated slightly, it just kinda looks like they stuck the standing collar on top of the uniform without trying to blend it? I mean look, you can even see the badge on the lapel has been copied over to the comic, even though they didn't use the open collar. What the fuck is that?

This is derivative and I've mentioned it before in another post, but I'm going to mention it again because it still pisses me off. They even left the SP on his Sam Browne belt. SP stands for State Police! The Blackwell Police Department is a municipal police agency! The Oklahoma equivalent of the NMSP is the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Coyle having a Russian shoulder patch and no Sergeant's chevrons? Lazy. And I mean that with my whole chest at this point, and imma tell you why I'm losing patience with this comic.

So, going back to the original image, above the rectangular name badge is a badge that I couldn't identify.

In an earlier post, I misidentified this pin as something similar to the badges below.

This style of badge appears to be connected to the Union, given its laurel theme. I admit, I was kind of surprised to learn that Oklahoma and what was known as Indian Territory at the time, were a part of the Union and not the Confederacy, however, the American Civil War isn't my area of expertise.

But on closer inspection... do you see what I see? The four thunderbolts? That badge is an EOD, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.

Now that as a concept is cool as fuck. Coyle being part of the bomb squad actually makes a lot of narrative sense. Coyle is implied to be very good with electrics (and possibly just DIY in general, given we hear him referencing power tools). By the time he's killed his third wife, the man is rigging full-on saw traps to get rid of his in-laws.

So if Coyle's got the brains and the will, what's the problem? Well, the thing is, EOD badges were originally created for the military in the 50s, and we have no evidence that Coyle served in the Korean War to have earned such a badge, nor would he have reason to display it on his police uniform. Those credits don't transfer.

There isn't any one set Law Enforcement EOD badge, and it differs from agency to agency, but for a small agency like the Blackwell Police Department to have their own designated bomb squad in the 1950s... while it's not impossible, it's a pretty big stretch. If Coyle had been part of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, it would make more sense as it's a larger agency, but from my limited research, even the OHP didn't have a formal bomb squad until the 1970s.

So while it would be super cool if it were canon that Coyle is a bomb disposal expert... I just don't see enough historical evidence for it.

I would give Red Barrels actual physical money for them to remake Coyle and Phyllis' comics in the original comic styles, because this photomanipulation-collage type shit just isn't it.

Imagine if something happened to Coyle that made him unsuitable to be a prime asset, so they take him on as an engineer... hopefully not in the same sleep room as Noakes.

I hope this rant has been educational, or at least entertaining to watch me get heated over. Coyle could be such an interesting character, but I keep running face-first into walls of inconsistency 😔

Still getting the hang of writing Coyle and his dynamic with my reagent so I wrote a lil thing about the in-universe acquisition of Murphy :3 CLOSEST THING TO FLUFF THESE BITCHES WILL EXPERIENCE. I also stuck with the name Ira for my reagent because he's a self insert anyway, whateverrrr

Ira could hear and smell Leland Coyle coming before he could even see him; The rhythmic thudding of his boots against tile and the cigarette smoke that preceded him were unmistakable. Ira stiffened in his bed, sitting at tense attention; There was never any guessing what sort of mood the officer would be in which always set him on edge. Coyle pushed the door to Ira's small cell open and casually leaned against the door frame to regard him cooly without a greeting. He seemed even taller outside of the trials somehow, probably due to him not slouching without having to lug around the heavy battery that powers his shock baton, but also because of the unnatural nature of his presence - he felt out of place here, his presence looming and imposing, like seeing a wolf waltz into a public park. Ira was so accustomed to seeing him snarling and lashing out like a wild animal that seeing him in any other state was almost more unnerving. Coyle watched the reagent for a beat too long, his expression unreadable as his eyes scanned across his body and came to rest upon the thing held in his lap.

"What in the Sam Hill is that thing?" Coyle drawled out, jabbing a finger at the stuffed animal in his arms.

"Oh, this is Mr. Lopsa… Dr. Easterman gave him to me." Ira held up the stuffed bunny, revealing its' worn rubber face plastered with a smile that was likely meant to come across as cheeky or mischievous but just made the thing look downright demonic. Coyle's expression visibly soured at mention of the doctor, his jaw tightening around his cigarette.

"Well it's ugly as shit," Coyle said gruffly as he stepped forward and snatched the rabbit from Ira's arms.

"Coyle!" Ira protested but Coyle ignored him, regarding the ugly thing with a sneer before tucking it under his arm.

"There's no reason you need this. You're not Easterman's dog." Ira's expression immediately fell, his eyes becoming glassy with tears over the loss of his one comfort in this sterile, soulless place. He resembled a kicked puppy, so much so that it even elicited the slightest pang of pity from Coyle. The feeling made his insides twist in a way that was foreign and deeply uncomfortable, so his next words came out quick and harsh,"Don't you start sniveling. Makes you look like a girl." Ira remained placidly silent, his mournful gaze shifting to the far wall - he was starting to dissociate, Coyle could see that he was starting to lose him. Coyle really hated it when Ira did that.

"Look, this stupid thing was probably mass produced in some commie sweatshop anyway. You can get a better one, something American made!" Coyle proclaimed as he began to pace, reminding Ira of a drill Sergeant from a war movie. "What's your favorite animal?" He suddenly asked, halting on his heels to face Ira again. Ira paused at the question, blinking blankly as he stared back at Coyle. "Come on Ira it's an easy question, favorite animal." Coyle pressed, snapping his fingers impatiently.

"Anteaters…" Ira answered slowly, his voice flat and quiet.

"Christ boy, why do you gotta be so weird? Why couldn't you have chosen somethin' normal like wolves or cats?" Coyle shot back with a snort.

Ira's brows furrowed in vague irritation and he retorted,"Oh yeah well what's your favorite animal?" Coyle grinned - Ira was engaging again, pulled back from the brink of that perilous abyss he seemed to be constantly teetering on.

"Wolverines. Now there's a good animal. Ferocious and meaner than Hell."

Ira had to admit that he wasn't surprised. If Leland Coyle were any animal, he could easily see him being a wolverine. What would that make him, then? Whatever wolverines prey upon. He supposed.

"Now you just sit pretty. I'll get you an anteater." Before Ira even had time to register his words the Sergeant was gone, his boots stomping against the floor as he marched off.

Ira didn't think much about the encounter for the new few days - he was far too preoccupied with the string of stressful trials he underwent. He was sitting on his bed grimacing and rubbing the sore spot on his hip where he received a blast of teeth-buckshot from Franco earlier when Coyle made his reappearance.

"Am I a man of my word or what?" Coyle asked proudly as he sauntered in, one hand held behind his back. When Ira raised a questioning eyebrow at him Coyle brought his hand forward to present what he had been hiding - an anteater stuffed animal. Ira's expression lit up with surprise and glee and he eagerly took the plush from Coyle, cradling it in a hug. It was soft and fit perfectly in Ira's arms, much to his delight, and carried the faint scent of the cigarette smoke that constantly clung to Coyle.

"You better appreciate it, you have no idea how difficult it was to get my hands on somethin' this niche from the outside." Ira's gaze shifted back up to Coyle and there was a tenderness there that Coyle had never seen. When the reagent spoke his voice was sincere and deliberate,

"I do… a lot. Thank you, Coyle." Coyle shifted his stance and crossed his arms, humming gruffly in reply. Somehow he hadn't expected a reaction like that.

"Good," He finally said with a satisfied nod. "You keep that in mind when you start feelin' a certain way about the doc. How he got you some mass produced garbage he likely gives out to any Reagent - you're not special to him, not like you are to me."
