Komodo dragons have iron-tipped teeth, new study shows
Komodo dragons, the world’s largest species of lizard, have iron-tipped teeth that help them to rip their prey apart, according to new research. The metal is concentrated in the cutting edge and tips of their curved, serrated teeth, staining them orange, scientists wrote in a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution. Komodo dragons are native to Indonesia and weigh around 80 kilograms (176 pounds) on average. They eat almost any kind of meat and are known as deadly predators...

Man, i love Dr. Stone and how it shows so much love for curiosity and the passing of knowledge. I love seeing Senku so happy watching Chrome find the answers with the knowledge he is acquiring.
Tumblr media
I love how thinking about the stories of the past Suika gives a guide to building a new way to problem solving, which is not really new! but knowledge is cyclical and Chrome's wit rediscovers it AAAAAAH,

I love how ancient knowledge of the Vikings that Ryusui remembered is now just as useful and once again drives humanity to find its way at sea!

I love how creativity is so loved, how every skill is appreciated and valued as a fundamental piece to rebuilding the world. I always say this, but this series really feels like a love letter to humanity's perseverance, curiosity and will!!
I just loved this story so much 💚

Given that Emmrich (a highly competent and respected necromancer) can perceive Spite when near Lucanis, I bet that Dorian (also a highly competent and respected necromancer) would ALSO be able to percieve Spite.
Meanwhile Lucanis would be out here like "If I had a gold piece for every time a necromancer with a mustache could hear my demon's incessant rambling, I'd have two gold pieces. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice."
Only difference is while Emmrich uses his ability to try and be a good influence on Spite, Dorian would use it like an uncle who purposely gives terrible advice and lies for shits and giggles because he (correctly) thinks it would be very funny.

the fbi was going through the craziest shit in the 90s like what the hell do you mean they needed to use an insanely dangerous cannibal for information to catch a serial killer who is murdering innocent families for his becoming of a god that is possessed by a dragon, then having to use him AGAIN to catch another serial killer who is murdering girls (including a senator’s daughter) to wear their skin as a suit while some other girl died under mysterious circumstances while other people are getting abducted by aliens and being terrorized by the paranormal while ALSO across the country, there’s a satanist who is possessing dolls and using a former nurse to kill more families???

Today’s Exhibit of the Day features the Komodo dragons in the Museum's Hall of Reptiles and Amphibians, as seen on 35 mm film! The current hall opened in November 1977. This retro photograph shows a Museum preparator hard at work on the gigantic reptiles—clearly demonstrating their enormous size! At 10 ft (3 m) long and 200 lbs (90.7 kg), the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's biggest lizard. In this scene, one Komodo dragon is beginning to eat a wild boar.

There is, I think, no arguing that contemporary genre art has a character distinct from previous decades. I also think that while there are big shifts in aesthetics somewhat aligning with each decade of the 20th century, here in the 21st things have definitely slowed down — I feel like the look of genre art has fossilized somewhat in the last 20 years. I don’t have a good explanation for why. Sometimes I wonder if I’m blinded by nostalgia, and that there really aren’t any obvious objective differences at all.
Worlds Beyond Time: Sci-Fi Art of the 1970s (2023) is a compelling argument, I think, that there ARE definite differences. The book, by Adam Rowe (and spinning out of his social media accounts dedicated to, well, ’70s science fiction art) looks at both artists and thematic categories of art from the period, mostly from paperback covers, and offers commentary and historical context in the text. The result is startling: a body of work by a variety of artists working in their own styles that nevertheless seems visually unified. With the exception of a couple outliers, this stuff all feels of the ’70s. The fact that there are some inclusions from both the ’60s and ’80s makes this even clearer.
I think the most interesting thing about this is how bizarre some of the ’70s art seems to be. A lot of these artists appear to be entirely off the leash, delivering work they WANTED to produce rather than what they were directed to produce (you can see a shift toward clearly pairing the cover art with the content of the book in the later part of the decade). There was also more money in the work, then, so speed wasn’t quite so big a part of the equation as it is now.
And, greater questions of genre art aside, Worlds Beyond Time is still a mesmerizing collection, worthy of your time even if you just want to feed pictures to your eyeballs.
