One thing I think about a lot is how in S3, the person who worked the hardest to keep Will away from Hannibal was actually Will. And even he didnt do a good job, but he can honestly say he tried. He tried to have a normal murder free life with a wife and a kid and he tried to stay away from anything that would tempt him to do smthng else. When Jack turned up to ask him for help he said no thank you. He tried to resist his urges both homocidal and homoerotic but he did not have very much support in that at all
He said "I need to see Hannibal" and Jack basically told him "By all means! Go right ahead! Go visit him whenever you want for as long as you want, let him smell you too. Just like old times." He told Molly, "When I come back, I might not be the same." "But I will be 🥺" Girl shut the fuck up hes fighting DEMONS
How hard would it have been for one singular character to say "Hey, this is a bad idea" just ONCE. Jack could have personally supervised Will's visits to Hannibal. Molly could have vetoed his involvement after Will TOLD her it was probably going to be bad for him. Literally any small intervention from someone with actual sway over Will's decisions and there's a small chance he might have listened.
Not that it was anyone's job to prevent Will and Hannibal from disappearing to Europe together for a honeymoon murder tour but you also cannot surprised pikachu face when you did not even do the tiniest low effort thing to prevent it. Especially when you saw it coming miles away. Will and Hannibal more than deserve to enjoy their homoerotic killing spree when every other character knew this could and would happen and did fuck all to stop it

The way that Hannibal and Will are never referred to as being queer is interesting. It’s not like sexuality never comes up, it does, predominantly with Margot who openly admits to being lesbian and talks about it often as a part of her character but I think that the way sexuality is framed is another mask.
Margot openly wants to kill her brother, so her sexuality is on display, she is a character that the viewer can “see”. The audience knows that Hannibal is queer — he doesn’t say it but it is shown through numerous other characters, predominantly through Will. Will is the filter in which the viewer “sees” Hannibal and so we know and acknowledge that he is a queer character.
Will is the blurriest and this is interesting in a variety of ways to me. Why does the viewer never have a clear sense of sexuality from Will? To start, Will is an unreliable narrator, we cannot explicitly trust the truth of what Will tells us about anything because it’s always just slightly shifted. He doesn’t victimise himself but he does elevate himself, just slightly, based on his current concept of morality. He was guilty when he killed Hobbes so we see him as guilty and unsteady, he was righteous when he killed Tier, so we see him through a lens of righteousness. No-one else can see him clearly and therefore, neither can we. He is not hidden in plain sight the same way as Hannibal and in doing so, makes himself very confusing to properly understand while also being exceedingly easy to pick apart.
Will is multifaceted and shifts the way he’s perceived a number of times throughout the series, while always giving the impression that he is completely unaware of it.
(side note: this doesn’t properly fit but I think it’s worth mentioning the “Will Graham is not a lesbian” line because there’s an undertone of stubborn curiosity there — is Will Graham a lesbian? Hannibal doesn’t know and Margot is quite smug about it, but that’s more gender based than anything).
Because of the ability to “chameleon” himself for any situation, he leaves a lot open to interpretation. Will Graham could be queer, he could be straight, he could a lot of things. It’s also worth noting that Will Graham experiences attraction in very different ways when it comes to men vs women based on the characters we see. With Matthew (and I’m using the definition of attraction very loosely here) as well as Hannibal, he is incredibly manipulative, like he can’t imagine being genuine with these men in the biblical sense but with Alana he is more open to being perceived and received a certain way. Molly is a more hollow imitation of Alana — he acts the way he thinks love should be but it’s hollow.
Hannibal, of course, is a curious show of attraction. He expresses a wide range of emotions towards him but never stereotypical feelings, if anything, he seems to take a sharp left when it comes to Hannibal but at the same time, he is very obviously more gentle and honest with him, like he’s trying to “show”the viewer what’s underneath. (meaning he does carry about Hannibal, we know he does, he simply shows a wrestling with these emotions that often come across as more violent or unrefined).
*this is just my interpretation, please don’t take it as gospel 🙂.

Okay I need people to look at these two gifs together:
This gif made by @lousolversons
Tumblr media
And this gif by @not-psychotic
Tumblr media
THAT IS THE SAME SMILE. THAT IS HUGH DANCY'S ROMCOM SMILE AND I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES IN THE WAY HUGH PRESENTS IT FOR EACH MOMENT.
First of all, the moment presented in the first gif is why I believe Will did love Molly. Yes, I'm a firm believer that Will still held feelings for Hannibal while he was with Molly, but I don't think she was a placeholder. The way I think Will's love for Hannibal and Molly works at the same time is like when you meet a widower who remarried.
Yes the widower (Will) still loves his first spouse (Hannibal), and it's terrible that they were ripped apart the way they were, but he can eventually move on. And he loves his new spouse (Molly), but there will always be a part of his heart that belongs to his first spouse. Except in the case of this analogy Hannibal isn't actually dead and he will come back.
And I mean, honestly, if the love of your life died and came back completely in one piece and still loved you after years of separation, what would you do? Would you tell them to move on because you've found someone else that you love almost as much as you loved them? Or would you discard your new spouse for the one you had always imagined you'd stay with? It's a really difficult decision.
But anyway I do wanna analyze these smiles. Obviously in the second gif Will is smiling at Hannibal, but in the first gif, Will is smiling at Jack while talking about Molly. They're the same smile but they're also so different.
In the first gif, the "romcomness" of the smile almost feels exaggerated. It's the way he smiled and kind of laughed but especially it's the way he broke eye contact. He breaks eye contact but the smile stays. It says "Molly and I can't see each other completely, but I'm happy enough." It reads as coy in a way we know Will Graham is not. It's a performance, but it's a performance based on a truth.
On the other hand, in the second gif, Will's smile is there but more subdued. Of course it could be just that he's tired and/or in pain as he's obviously injured, but to me it's lesser because it's just him and Hannibal. He doesn't need to wear his mask for Jack or for Molly or for anyone else. And he keeps eye contact with Hannibal even as his smile falls away because he and Hannibal can see each other. They accept the good (the smile) and the bad (the loss of the smile) in each other but that's okay for them because they're true to each other like they are to no one else.
The way Will smiles at Hannibal in the second gif is so much more intimate than the way he smiled about Molly in the second gif, and I can't help but wonder: if we got more scenes where Will and Molly were interacting face to face (because let's be honest there's not many), would Will smile the same way he did in the second gif? Would he even smile at her the same way he does talking about her in the first gif, or is that just him trying to appear like the happy/satisfied husband in front of company? I know Will loved Hannibal, and I know Will loved Molly, but these two gifs side by side just confirm for me that what he felt for Hannibal was so much more impactful for Will than his love for Molly.

other people have pointed out that hannibal’s seaside house was supposed to represent will’s “boat on the sea” which will tells hannibal makes him feel safe in Œuf, but i haven’t seen much comparison of it with re: molly’s cabin and how they differ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(will’s house as shown in Œuf)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the seaside house in the wrath of the lamb)
as we can see, hannibal’s seaside house had huge windows and let in a lot of natural light and was brightly lit up in the dark, just like wolf trap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(molly’s cabin in the great red dragon)
now compare that to molly’s cabin - molly’s cabin had an overarching roof which made it dark even in the daytime, the windows are small, the space is lit up by low wattage bulbs which don’t give out much light, and she keeps the windows closed with dark curtains. i think this is supposed to represent that molly wasn’t will’s “boat on the sea”, that she couldn’t be his anchor.
later, we see will drinking in ‘the great red dragon’, and then call someone (presumably molly) but the phone keeps on ringing without anyone picking up.
Tumblr media
will’s mind is then filled with crime scene photos. and - who does he ask to see? hannibal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now in the next episode, molly does pick up, but when will puts down the phone and goes to sleep, he has a nightmare and hallucinates his face falling apart in the mirror. molly was a brief respite, but she couldn’t truly keep the darkness at bay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the truth is apparent - despite all the time spent together with molly and all the time spent apart from hannibal, hannibal is still who will thinks of as his safe space, who he feels at home with. not because hannibal keeps the darkness at bay, but because he taught him not to fear it and to find the beauty in it.

I write about it very often in my tags, so I decided to make a post out of it actually.
Imagine being Molly Foster-Graham.
Your first husband dies of cancer when your son is six. You still love him and miss him, but you decide to try to get your life back together, because you have a child, right?
Here is a delated scene from the script (which is also partially a scene from the book):
Tumblr media
I believe that in the book it is clearer, but it's not really that Will or Molly loved each other very much. For Molly it was rather a marriage to feel less alone and was born out of convenience for both of them.
But I will stand by this: Poor Molly.
Yes, it happens that women marry closeted gays without even knowing it, but there is a difference between this and the fact that it turns out that your husband is not only a closeted gay, but also has murderous and cannibalistic tendencies, and, on top of that, has a so-called "murder husband", who currently is in an institution for the criminally insane and is so possessive of your husband that he sends another murderer to kill you and your child. You barely make it out alive and your husband still chooses the guy who put you in danger.
Traumatic. Both for Molly and for Wally. This poor boy went in his eleven-year-old life through like... A LOT.
