Day five! If you can’t home-grow your own samurai to serve you, store-bought is fine.
#tomoe ame#usagi yojimbo#i’ve been really into the murderb*t diaries so thinking of how these two things might mesh was really fun#i think a lot of UY characters would stay ‘human’ but i really love the thought of tomoe as a SecUnit#pizzazz art#her hand isn’t permanently a sword btw. i was thinking that she transforms it into weaponry whenever needed#fancy pizzazz art

hi quick question for my sci-fi besties - this is one of my new bookmark designs, just deciding on the colour? it’ll be doublesided so i’ll probably have two different colours, i’m just thinking….are these the best choices? in terms of matching to the covers of books with similar vibes.
#laya talks#maybe an evil red? oranger?#just not purple bc i already have a space sword one that’s purple.#i feel like. bluish and goldish are used a lot right#other new designs in this drop are vampirey witchy/horror honey/bees and a fanart one of a certain secunit

🎵 last song:
Currently listening to Swords of a Thousand Men, by Tenpole Tudor
🌈favourite colour:
I love a lot of bright primary colours especially red, since I’m dressed all in red right now I will say red
📺 currently watching:
Watching Murderbot with my utterly adored family and with my much loved online family too—I am hugely enjoying it! It’s not the same as the books, but to slavishly replicate every detail of the books would have been utterly pointless! Instead we have a wonderful new work of art (transformative art) with some incredible performances—and yes I love Dastmalchian’s Gurathin
🎥 last movie:
We watched Mickey 17 on Friday night—it was okay, personally found the pacing weird and the plot bizarre (I’m quite happy to suspend belief but I was there questioning the weirdness of a technological state where you can copy a human, make interstellar journeys, but are having basic issues like food production on your ship—also the vaccine manufacture made zero sense, nor did the translator for the aliens…and and and—but it was watchable
🍜 sweet/savory/sour: I am not drawn to sweet food, much preferring savory—I also like sour, I have toxic waster sweets in my bag because I sometimes enjoy that taste (and sometimes need a bit of sugar—I can forget to eat)
📚 currently reading:
Reading and LOVING Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice series (reading Sword right now) and I love it SO MUCH! Brilliant brilliant brilliant books. I am quiet obsessed with them
❤️ relationship:
This September marks my 29th wedding anniversary to the love of my life—who just bought me carrot sticks to nibble 🥕
🗺️ current obsession:
I’m a vaccine advocate champion, and also spend a lot of time advocating for and advancing the visibility and impact of getting diverse individuals involved in scientific research—so I utterly loathe RFKjr, vile vile man and I think David Attenborough was right about Trump. I’m also obsessed with The Murderbot Diaries especially MB’s favourite* augmented human
*it’s a joke, okay
🔍 last google:
Swords of a Thousand Men—because I couldn’t remember the name of the group, 1981 is a long time ago…
💻 currently working on:
My Murderbot BigBang fic! You’ll never guess who it features! (That’s a joke, it’s Murderbot and Gurathin)
And now I must go—as spouse has cooked a lovely meal for us…

🎵 last song: "Lotta Love" by Nicolette Larson is what's currently playing. I've got the internet radio station set to the year I graduated, so there's a lot of familiar disco-y stuff going past me. Oh, it just changed to "Mama Can't Buy You Love" by Elton John
🌈 favourite colour: Does anybody really have a favorite color? It's been officially green since I was seven, though.
📺 currently watching: Let's see. At the moment the only things D is saving to watch with me are Sherlock's Daughter and Sister Boniface Mysteries. I'll probably arrange how I'm going to watch Murderbot today when I'm at gaming group with friends who use streaming services. My general impression from fan reaction is that it's going to have typical adaptation difficulties but be generally acceptable watching. I'd be surprised if it were half as addictive as the books, though.
🎥 last movie: Oh, lord, what was it? We don't get to movies very often. It seems like I ought to remember. Oh, it was Here!
🍜 sweet, savory, sour: People have favorites of these? You need all of them for the full range of taste experience! More of my preferred foods have sweet or savory dominating than sour.
📚 currently reading: The Second Biggest Nothing, by Colin Cotterill.
❤️ relationship: Coming up on 35th anniversary of marriage.
🗺️ current obsession: Not really. Trying not to obsess about the State of the World, which just overwhelms me and makes me useless when I let it.
🔎 last google: "movies November 2024." My husband couldn't remember either but we narrowed it down to that month and there it was.
🖥️ currently working on: A Murderbot Diaries fic about Gurathin's "Mom," a Comfort Unit. I'm giving this poor man such a complicatedly awful life. May or may not finish it. Also the perennial quest to get the house in order.
Normally I tag the last x number of people in my activity field, but that would include a bunch of strangers liking and passing on my addition to that Murderbot remark, so I'll be a little pickier this time, let's see: @ao3cassandraic, @nerianasims, @alianoralacanta @silvermars because I actually had a little conversation with them and this kicks it out of my usual circles, @eulaliasims, @medleymisty, @rosewind2007, @shadysentinel, @natteryaktoad.

thank you for the tag @eloquentspeeches !! I immediately forget every book I've ever read xD I'm going to put what I do remember under the cut. Let's see~
The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
This series is one of my all-time favourites. It's a science fiction series of seven books and short stories about a rogue cyborg security agent, set in a space-faring society with wormhole technology and alien remnants. The first book in the series is:
All Systems Red
"As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure." In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid--a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.
The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
An epic fantasy saga spanning multiple books and worlds, featuring magic, war, and the return of the ancient Knights Radiant. The first installment is:
The Way of Kings
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them. One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable. Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity. Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar's niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan's motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war. The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making. Speak again the ancient oaths: Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before Destination. and return to men the Shards they once bore. The Knights Radiant must stand again.
and last one for now
Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda
Deltora Quest is the collective title for three distinct series of children's fantasy books. It's a series I read consistently throughout my childhood and it's one I still enjoy as an adult. The overall synopsis for the first series is:
For centuries, the evil Shadow Lord has been plotting to invade Deltora and enslave its people. All that stands in his way is the magic Belt of Deltora with its seven gems of great and mysterious power. Now, Leif, Barda, and Jasmine must unite to find the seven gems and save Deltora from an eternity of darkness.
I tag @wickedthemusicalaustralia @astillnight @stunt-muppet @beeawolf and @avatarofterminus if you want to give some recommendations! No obligation, of course <3
#tag game#books!#i need more books to read#honorary mention to into the dusk and cloud chaser those are beloved#and the ultimates series is also a fun read

August TBR--

August is going to be the month of SciFi apparently. This is because I was given access to an ARC of the new Murderbot Diaries novella that comes out later this year. Which means I need to speed up my reread of this series. I’m also continuing with my reread of the Skyward series in preparation for the final book later this year. But I’m going to try to leave a lot of my reading open for the month so I can have less pressure on myself and the ability to mood read books from my physical TBR and the TBR I have with my library. Let’s get into the books I plan on reading.
1. Fence: Disarmed by Sarah Rees Brennan-- This was sadly the only book in Fence that I couldn’t find at my local library so I had to purchase it instead. This book is based on the comics from C.S. Pacat about a group of boys who fence at a boarding school. The comics were great on their own but I had such a good time reading the book that comes before this one. I am sad, however, that this is the last work about these characters that I have left to read.
2. Sunreach by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson-- This is the first novella in the Skyward series. I’m rereading the entire series in order to prep for the final book coming out in November. This follows Spensa who wants to become a pilot for her country’s military but her father’s reputation as a coward holds her back. This comes after the first two books in the series so I won’t dive too far into the synopsis. I will say that this one follows a secondary character and keeps us in the loop of what’s happening while Spensa is being a badass.
3. Exit Strategy by Martha Wells-- This is the fourth book in the Murderbot Diaries. You all have heard me go on and on about this series so I’ll keep it short. We follow a SecUnit that has hacked their governor module. They can do anything they want now. But it seems like what they want to do is keep saving stupid humans and keep watching their serials. Murderbot is anxious and socially inept (but who am I to judge really?) and they also keep finding themselves falling head first into conspiracy after conspiracy.
4. Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory by Martha Wells (Kindle)-- This is the only currently published Murderbot that I haven’t read yet. This is a 12 page story following Dr. Mensah and the events of Exit Strategy. A human perspective on Murderbot? I’m interested. It’s listed as #4.5 in the series so hopefully I didn’t NEED to have read this before the full length novel.
5. Network Effect by Martha Wells-- This is the only full length novel in the Murderbot Diaries and it’s still following our favorite SecUnit. If I remember rightly, this also has one of the most heartwarming scenes in the series in it. So I’m really looking forward to rereading. I’ll probably read this closer to the middle of the month while the other two will probably be read back to back.
6. The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood (Kindle)-- Csorwe has always known how and when she will die. She’ll climb the mountain, enter the Shrine, and become a sacrifice. But on the day of her foretold death, she is given a new fate from a powerful mage: to become the wizard’s sword-hand--stealing, spying, and killing to help him reclaim his seat of power in the homeland from which he was exiled. From the GoodReads: “Csorwe and the wizard will soon learn--gods remember, and if you live long enough, all debts come due.” Let’s freaking go my dudes. I love it. I hope the part about the gods is really about some gods who she has to defeat some how. I’m excited to throw some Fantasy in the mix with all this Sci-Fi.
7. Moorewood Family Rules by Helenkay Dimon (Library)-- I saw this one on my library app and I’m really hoping I can get a chance to read it this month. I keep seeing it pop up as available and then unavailable the next day so I’ll have to keep an eye on it. This one was pitched as Kives Out and Ocean’s 8 meets The Nest. This one is about a woman who returns home from prison to her dysfunctional con artist family and tries to get them to go legit. (Okay, is that ringing The Company You Keep bells for anyone else? Just me? Okay.) I’m excited to see where this one goes. It’s listed as both a Mystery and a Romance so that could be good, as long as it’s done well.

might be writing a Borderlands/Murderbot crossover (one-shot?) partially because I wanted to write 'strange aliens running around distributing rocket launchers is no basis for a chain of command'
There’s also a humanoid of some kind, whirling like a ballet dancer, a sword in both hands. He dispatches two of the rock-dogs with the sword and disappears behind one of the monster’s front legs.
I must not have the efficiency rating I think I do, because he somehow manages to sneak up behind me. I only figure that out when a grenade flies past me, because I know that none of the humans would have brought something like that.
“Who are you?” I ask, which maybe isn’t the smartest thing, but figuring out if he’s another SecUnit of some kind seems like a good idea. Considering he has four fingers on each hand, I don’t think I’m dealing with a human.
Instead of answering, he points at the monster with his sword.
“I would recommend shooting from a great distance. It is dangerous.”
I would recommend not shooting at all, and instead leaving this planet and going back to ART in orbit. I don’t want to get in a fight with something so much bigger than me. I want to catch up on my shows.
But the monster’s seen us, and it won’t take long for it to close the distance between it and us. If the sword-wielding humanoid is inclined to help, I probably won’t tell it ‘no’.
When he tries to hand me a massive weapon, though, I just stare at it. I don’t trust strangers, or things they try to give me. For all I know, that thing could explode as soon as I touch it.
He shoves the weapon into my hands and takes a step back. "This is called a gun. Shoot it at the guardian. This will help kill it."
I know that, but strange aliens running around distributing rocket launchers is no basis for a chain of command.
I don't want Bharadwaj to get almost-eaten by anything for a second time, though. I also don't want to think about why I don't want that, because that feels too much like a prelude to having emotions.
And then he disappears into thin air. I have questions about how he did that, and why he doesn't exist on any systems that I can access. But the skyscraper-sized monster seems to be slightly more important at the moment, so I brace the rocket launcher on my shoulder and fire.
#and also I wanted to write Zer0 liberally using the smile emoji to try to seem like less of a threat to the overprotective SecUnits#Three is willing to consider him a potential friend if the humans like him#Murderbot straight up pulls a gun on him and says “why are you doing that”#two kinds of people etc etc

Ten characters, Ten fandoms, Ten tags game! I was tagged by @neoncomets and @epersonae - thank you both for tagging me!
This was fun. I included captions because I can’t help myself.
Our Flag Means Death | Edward Teach

Deserves a million kisses and with the power of God and David Jenkins on my side he WILL get them.
Unsounded | Sette Frummagem

If you love innovative magic systems, complex world building, and feral children, you should go read Unsounded. Do it. Do it right now. (Just be aware it can be a bit intense, content wise.) It’s beautifully written and drawn. It’s free online but I still buy all the print books bc if the world ends and I have to live in a bunker underground I’m bringing Unsounded with me (also the author deserves to make so much money).
The Murderbot Diaries | SecUnit (Murderbot)

Art by Tommy Arnold (link is to his blog where he goes through the fantastic process of setting up reference photos for stuff like this. But also I just have to gush about how none of his art shows Murderbot’s face. It hates that. (Also also I would kill god for a copy of this omnibus edition))
The Mandalorian | Din Djarin
The epitome of the tired-dad-protects-secretly-powerful-child trope. Just wants to live in the country with his kid and keeps getting pulled into space wizard bullshit. Never shows anyone his face but maintains a mustache anyways. I love him.
Ted Lasso | Ted Lasso
Has heard of negative emotions. Refuses to experience one. Is sure that will work out just great. This is otherwise known as being Midwestern.
Steven Universe | Connie Maheswaran
I, too, wish to be taught how to sword fight by a 5000 year old lesbian rock in between tennis practice and violin lessons.
Lucifer | Mazikeen Smith
This show is not exactly well-written but it’s very sexy and I am weak. Justice for Maze’s character arc though lmao bc it’s really just “No longer evil I want to be loved.” … “Evil again.” on repeat. But she looks great the whole time. You can be as messy as you want Maze, I’ll still love you.
Game of Thrones | Oberyn Martell

(Yeah it’s Pedro again leave me alone) I could write essays on this bisexual disaster man. And I have. The silver lining to dying horribly is that he escaped the show before it got irredeemably bad was mysteriously canceled.
What We Do In the Shadows | Nadja of Antipaxos
Her best friend is the ghost of her human self in a doll that she dresses to look just like her. The smartest vampire in the house. Can’t tell the difference between human children and raccoons. Icon behavior.
Westworld | Maeve Millay

This show could have ended after one season and I would have been perfectly happy. Alas. But Maeve! She is so brilliantly kind despite everything, and that’s what I adore about her.
I’m tagging @gaypiratebrainrot, @chocolatepot, @emi--rose, @asneakyfox, and if anyone else wants to do it feel free to say I tagged you :D (and if I tagged you and you don’t want to do it, that’s totally fine! no pressure)

okay hmm
i’m starting to feel a bit uncomfortable with how so much of fantasy/scifi literature deals with violence monopolies or has central characters whose main skill sets have with violence to do? they are fighters, warriors, rebels, Jedi knights, police, SecUnits, sorcerers… and that is all very fine but it gets tiresome after a time?
and so hmm. i was thinking, could we gather books/fics/other reading for fantasy/scifi types that has a different focus?
i’ll start, in no particular order:
-Emmi Itäranta: Moonday Letters, City of Woven Streets, Memory of Water
-Ben Aaronovitch: What Abigail Did That Summer
-TL Huchu: The Library of the Dead
-Ursula K. LeGuin’s Earthsea series
-Lumberjanes
—
yeah so these are some books i’ve really enjoyed where the focus isn’t on violence and the characters have to use other strategies to get by in life than bashing people with spells/laser swords etc.
anyway, i’d love hear from you!

I got my fandom wires crossed and now I want Geralt of Rivia as a SecUnit from The Murderbot Diaries.
His governor module glitched out years ago, but he kept doing his job because what the hell else was he going to do, run for it? The company would have him stripped for spare parts before he made it to the first transit station.
So his life goes on that way, as inventory sold to various clients for their security needs, until he meets Jaskier, who I think runs some kind of “deep space adventures!!!!” docu-feed. He only scrapes together the money to rent a SecUnit because a corporate-sponsored rival--Valdo Marx--has been after him recently. Marx tries to hack the company interface and sends Geralt orders to kill his client.
Geralt: “Hm.” *punches Valdo Marx into the sun*
So then Jaskier is like!!!! You’re a rogue SecUnit! And he buys Geralt’s bond from the company so that they can travel around together. Geralt still does his job--he likes protecting humans, even the dumb ones--so he becomes a freelance security consultant, and Jaskier sorta...tags along. He sets clips of Geralt fighting various things--giant sandworms, rival corporates, colonists infected with alien remnants that drove them insane--to music, kinda like music videos. The feed is absurdly popular. (The energy weapons in his arms turn into swords.) Their arrangement isn’t the most comfortable: Geralt can’t exactly forget that Jaskier owns him, despite Jaskier’s every attempt to ignore that problem and all of its implications.
The company, of course, doesn’t like having a competitor and starts chasing them down. Jaskier gets hurt and they take shelter in the first transport that Geralt can convince to let them onboard. It’s empty, or seems to be, and has a full medical suite.
He’s just starting to hack the bot pilot when he hears a voice on his feed. Oh, aren’t you sweet.
YEN--Yikes Evil Network, as Jaskier later calls it--has the processing power of a small star. YEN could crush Geralt like a bug.

Hello, Isolans! We have conducted an activity check for the month of January!
If your character isn’t on this list, make sure to check this page to see how many stars that character has earned this month! Stars can be used for purchases at the marketplace.
The blogs that were removed from the Isola Radiale masterlist are under the cut. Note that both blogs with broken links and deactivated accounts will be included both at the top of this list and in their proper categories.
If you were removed in error, please simply send a re-application message. Several different people work on the activity checks, so it’s possible there are mistakes! If this happens to you, you will be able to keep everything you previously had, you just may be placed in a different residence.
Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:
Make at least three in-character posts during a calendar month (for instance, if the activity check is for January, have three in-character posts between the 1st and 31st of January).
Only one drabble and/or meme response of 300+ words counts as activity.
One-liners or minis not tagged #isola mini also do not count.
Please Note: If you are removed during two consecutive activity checks, you will not be allowed to re-apply as that character for two calendar months.
Additionally, anyone removed during the activity check will have a 12-hour window from the time of posting to re-claim their character. Any character not reclaimed during that period will be open to the community at large.
Please send in your reapplications from the account of the character that was removed.

Look, droids in the GFFA are treated like bits in the Corporate Rim, but since there isn't really a SecUnit equivalent it's super easy for Murderbot to blend in with humans. And if this is the Clone Wars then Murderbot finds a city being attacked by a droid army, and whether by convincing or just taking them over they're Murderbot's army now. All to protect those who should really use bots for security.
Then these assholes without augments but with abilities that they really shouldn't have show up and have plasma beam swords and Murderbot is just going "For fuck's sake!"
Also, I stand by my theory that a Murderbot/Star Wars crossover would be hilarious. Murderbot can hack like nobody in Star Wars, but imagine Murderbot having to deal with Force users.
