The field of computer science offers vast opportunities, but success in this ever-evolving industry requires more than just a basic understanding of programming. The demand for skilled professionals is at an all-time high, and employers are constantly looking for individuals who possess the right technical expertise and problem-solving abilities. Whether you're a student just starting your journey or someone looking to enhance your career, mastering the right set of skills is key. In this blog, we'll break down the top 5 in-demand computer science skills that can help you build a successful career.
1. Programming Languages
At the core of computer science lies programming. The ability to write clean, efficient, and bug-free code is crucial for any tech-related role. Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Python, C++, JavaScript, and Ruby is highly valued by employers across industries.
Each language has its own unique applications, and mastering multiple languages can help open doors to various career paths. For instance, Python is ideal for data science and AI, while JavaScript is essential for web development. For students looking to gain proficiency, enrolling in Computer Science Classes in Yamuna Vihar can provide you with a solid foundation in these languages.
Having a firm grasp on multiple programming languages will help you solve complex problems efficiently, making you an attractive candidate for tech positions. Whether you're interested in software development, web development, or even game development, the ability to program is a must-have skill.
2. Data Structures and Algorithms
Data structures and algorithms form the backbone of efficient coding. Data structures are ways of organizing and storing data to ensure it can be accessed and modified efficiently, while algorithms are step-by-step instructions used to solve problems. Together, they help developers optimize their code, making it run faster and use fewer resources.
Knowledge of basic data structures like arrays, linked lists, stacks, and queues as well as more complex ones like hash tables and binary trees is essential for tackling problems in fields like software development and data science. Additionally, understanding algorithms such as sorting, searching, and dynamic programming can help solve some of the most complex computational problems in the industry.
3. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
With technology advancing at an unprecedented rate, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have become two of the most in-demand skills in the computer science industry. AI focuses on building machines that can simulate human intelligence, while ML teaches computers to learn from data and improve over time without being explicitly programmed.
As industries such as healthcare, finance, and retail adopt AI and ML to enhance their operations, professionals with expertise in these fields are increasingly sought after. Whether it's creating self-driving cars, improving medical diagnosis systems, or automating customer support, the applications of AI and ML are vast and growing.
4. Cybersecurity
As businesses and individuals continue to store more information online, the demand for cybersecurity professionals has skyrocketed. Cybersecurity is all about protecting systems, networks, and data from cyber threats and attacks. Professionals in this field help organizations safeguard their sensitive data and prevent security breaches that could compromise privacy or result in financial loss.
In today’s digital landscape, the need for cybersecurity experts has never been greater. As more industries move to the cloud and store vast amounts of data online, the risk of cyberattacks increases. Students interested in this field should focus on understanding network security, encryption techniques, and ethical hacking.
5. Cloud Computing
The rise of cloud computing has revolutionized the way businesses store, manage, and process data. Cloud services like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform allow companies to host applications, store data, and run processes remotely, providing flexibility and scalability.
Cloud computing professionals are in high demand because organizations increasingly rely on cloud infrastructure to meet their data storage and computing needs. Knowledge of cloud platforms, virtualization, and cloud security can open doors to a variety of roles, including cloud engineer, cloud architect, and cloud consultant.

NO ESCAPE ZONE…
1.7k words. sure, you’re supposed to be taking sylus’ measurements. yet, what happens when you’re sexually drawn away, pushing forward an offer that the two of you can’t refuse? once you’ve made a deal, you have to keep it.
acts: oral (m) receiving, throat fucking, gagging, whimpers, facial, cum-swallowing, crying, sadistic tendencies, massive cock, slight cock warming, almost getting caught and more.
a/n: he’s officially my favourite now. like, he’s the perfect man. argue with the wall if you think I’m wrong. 1/3. pt2 here.

PROPPED within such a delicate space, your heart boisterous, you remain before Sylus. A measuring tape embroiders your fingers, leaving you a contorted mess — your fingers situated against his sculpted abs.
“Do you want me to wear the wrong size?” Snarky aloofness mixes into Sylus’ question.
Patronisation stains him while he looks down at you, his crimson eyes slicing into your facade. Wickedly, mischief tints a composed Sylus. It sculpts him into soft grunting at your touch becoming more intense.
Skilful, you clumsily back into Sylus’ chest. His closeness clamps around your mental functions, rendering you breathless. Attempting to scoff, to paint yourself as unbothered, you continue to take in Sylus’ measurements.
“With your cloudy mind, you are going to mess up my outfit,” Informing you, Sylus’ vibrating tone causes your breath to hitch. All the stability within you was beginning to falter.
“Stop complaining,” Stubbornly countering Sylus, you allow your delicate fingers to fall against his v-line.
Blooming with forbidden thoughts, you cast yourself into becoming bolder. Tracing the intricate curves of his abs, you lightly disregard the measuring tape. Unable to revert, you continue — knowing this is a no-escape zone.
“You can do whatever, but we’ll have to strike a deal, sweetie,” Taunting you, Sylus gruffly speaks — observing you drift your hand incredibly lower.
“Mhm, you can do whatever you want to me, Sy’,” Responding to him, you momentarily gather the courage to sensually flutter your eyelashes at him.
“Be careful of what you put on the bargaining table,” Uncaring at Sylus’ warning, you roughly drift your hand lower — casting your palm into resting against his cock outline.
Mesmerised, you plaster yourself into listening to his rapturous heartbeat. Grinning, you develop lustful at Sylus’ stolen groans — pushing you into cruelly squeezing.
“Is gentleness not an attribute of yours?” Grunting, Sylus cloudily questions you.
“Your body begs to differ,” Mocking Sylus, you teasingly trail over the ample outline — listening to his sensitive gasps.
“Damn, s-sweetie,” Stripped of composure, Sylus voices his guarded heart — curling into your fingers prying at his concealed fly.
Riddled with tainted control, you greet Sylus’ fluttering eyes. Naturally, he tries to suppress his anticipation — beads of sweat contrasting his coolness. Happiness festoons you while you silently unbutton his trousers.
Bubbling with ropes of control, you allow his elusive trousers to fall — completely pooling before the both of you.
Smothered with commitment, you glance at Sylus’ thick, girthy, pre-cum, adorned erection. An erection that’s scarcely caged, pointing greedily in your direction.
“Your body always goes against your mental stoicism,” Corrupting Sylus’ sanity, you lowly speak — pushing eagerly closing your plush thighs.
“Is that why… you’re clenching your thighs?” Fixed with a strained expression, Sylus’ territorial inquiry causes you to innocently puff out your cheeks.
“Is there any reason to lie to you?” Raising your brow, you counter Sylus’ point — beginning to disregard his cock-blocking underwear.
“If you were a fool, of course,” Your abdomen curls, refined by butterflies at Sylus’ snarky remark.
It completely aroused you, pushing you into straining the ache that wells within your toned thighs. Pushing with a restrained might, you almost cave at Sylus’ clouded gaze resting upon a lust-trembling you.
Shaping yourself mentally, you lower yourself with every fabric tug — inching painfully nearer to Sylus’ throbbing cock. Shuddering with longing, you admire every vein that greets your smitten eyes. Sheerly his v-line made you almost finish, riddled with your release between your clamped thighs.
Lowered before him, dominance still ravelled around a patient Sylus, you continue to watch as his girth cock eventually releases itself from his briefs. Drool adorns your lips while you admire the thickness of his precum-beaded tip.
Nothing within you could manage yourself as you loudly gulp, allowing his underwear to properly fall. Dutiful, you push yourself into grasping his girth — smearing your fingers against the midst of his large cock.
“You’re so beautiful when you’re on your knees,” Admiring you, Sylus admits his thoughts — glancing down at you with admiration.
“You’re next, Sy’,” Too enamoured by his monstrous cock, you whine with longing — wanting to fill yourself up with his cock.
However, you’re in a reserved place.
“What was that?” Eagerly questioning you, Sylus softly moans at your lips parting — gently kissing upon the tip of his dripping cock.
Before you could consensually glance at him, Sylus releases crimson and raven tentacles from his evol. Satisfyingly humming, he casts himself into smugly glancing at you — consumed by you hungrily greeting his gaze.
“You…heard me,” Replying hazily to him, you reach towards mentally satisfying your sexual trance.
Being swiftly released, you blanket a hand around Sylus’ inhumane cock — relishing the delicate, veiny skin. Focusing your lips, you pepper tender kisses — consumed by the idea of satisfying him.
Filtering your hearing, you pluck out the hefty sounds of Sylus’ needy moans, his breathless pants, his silently voiced eagerness. To you, it was obvious that the heartless man was riddled with an immense amount of pleasure.
Content with how effective your touch is, you widen your warm mouth — burrowing Sylus’ tip between your saliva-tinted lips. Slimming your cheeks, you contently suck down on his tip — innocently flaunting your glimmering eyes.
Unable to stop yourself, you prepare your mouth for more —- flattening your tongue before you push your head further. Completely enticed, you lodge your mouth with Sylus’s cock — rewarded by his subconscious moans.
Flustered, you mellowly watch his cheeks grow blessed with a crimson hue. Pleased at the rare sighting, your curiosity peaks at Sylus’ fingers yearning to burrow into your hair and guide you.
Honoured, you strategically fill more of your mouth with Sylus’ girth. Knowing his heavy cock would be hard to fully put into your mouth, you take a little bit more — filling your mouth so obediently.
“Oh, yes,” Unwilling to quell his moans, Sylus completely releases them. His lips part with his intense gaze glancing down at you, his eyes rolling back effortlessly.
Fond at Sylus’ enjoyment, you softly bob your head — feeling every vein whilst you intensely suck down. The warmth of his cock stains your mouth while saliva drips from your lips, supporting the pace that you set for your mouth.
Contently sucking, Sylus subconsciously bucks his hips into your mouth — his fingers grazing your forehead. Beautifully obeying him, you listen to his every moan — love-stricken by the gushy sounds of your cock-sucking.
“This…is the…best way of shutting you up,” Playfully rolling your eyes at Sylus’ scrambled words, you harshen your pace — watching silence envelop a trembling him.
“Ah! Yes!” Unable to control his breathing, Sylus’ frantic moans continue to spill over you.
As he watches you through strained eyes, Sylus softly bucks his hips into your mouth. Stirred on, Sylus strengthened his pace while you fruitfully gag on his cock. Unwilling to pull back, teary at his pleasurable pace, you grow flustered at the heavy squelching sounds that flee from your lips.
“Such a…good girl,” Sylus contently praises you, throwing his head back.
Testing your limits, Sylus pushes your head against the base of his cock — turned on by your heavy gagging. Lightly pulling back, your face riddled with tears, you grin at him.
“Too much?” Concerned, Sylus’ beams of affection tint his question.
“More,” Wooed by Sylus’ subconscious yearning, you gesture for him to throat fuck you.
Blanketed by your compliance, Sylus casts himself into slamming his cock into your mouth. Your heavy tears falling completely turn him on, leading to him quickening his pace further at the lewd sounds of his cock fucking your throat.
“Close, my…sweet,” An aggressive, focused expression tints Sylus’ face while he watches you, so near to finishing.
Nodding lazily, Sylus’ pace effortlessly creates an impossible momentum. Narrowly struggling to keep up, your eyes flutter at him burying your mouth impossibly with almost every inch of him.
“Hm, take… it,” Smushing your lips against his cock base, Sylus almost hunches over with his energy-consuming statement.
Flushed, Sylus’ worded murmurs completely stain your ears. Ears before he holds your mouth there, hardening effortlessly. Almost rendered breathless, you hold out for him — listening to him moan extremely loudly. His loudness leaves your thudding cunt a pooling mess, in need of being touched upon and coddled.
Grunting so audibly, Sylus relaxes whilst his throbbing cock shoots out thick, warm cum down your throat. It causes him to almost bellow a whimper at the sensitivity, panting harshly whilst his balls are finally empty.
Strained with pleasurable tiredness, Sylus happily pulls back from a used you. A small beam frames his lips while he admires your smudged mascara, your streaming tears, the cum and saliva bubbling around your lips, along with the drops staining your clothes.
“Swallow,” Sylus dominantly instructs you to do so, accidentally bringing himself to finish against your face.
Gasping, you slightly flinch at his thick beads of cum caressing your eyelashes. However, you then hear the sound of a worker stirring nearer to your reserved spot. Panic arises within you, causing you to hyper fixation on the cum staining your face.
You’re far from presentable.
“Sy—”
“—Are you ready for your measurements to be finalised?” A worker so cheerily asks, causing you to stifle your breaths — embarrassed.
“I think I’ve already finalised my measurements,” Smirking, Sylus responds to her — gently placing his cock back into his briefs.
“I’ll be available if you need to finalise for customisation,” As she speaks, you frown at Sylus smoothing out his sexual ruffles — leaving you on your knees.
“Perfect,” Sylus announces, observing you pout — a little annoyed at him simply staring.
“A little help here?” Completely pulverised, you croakily speak. Large specks of cum rest upon your face and within your styled hair.
“Sure, but I’ll be sure to fulfil my half of the deal,” Softly informing you, Sylus gently lifts you, “Once we get back to my home.” Amused by the degrading sexual look you wear, Sylus admires you — mellow.
He wasn’t done with you, yet. 1/3.

The Optimist by Keach Hagey
The man who brought us ChatGPT. Sam Altman’s extraordinary career – and personal life – under the microscope
On 30 November 2022, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted the following, characteristically reserving the use of capital letters for his product’s name: “today we launched ChatGPT. try talking with it here: chat.openai.com”. In a reply to himself immediately below, he added: “language interfaces are going to be a big deal, i think”.
If Altman was aiming for understatement, he succeeded. ChatGPT became the fastest web service to hit 1 million users, but more than that, it fired the starting gun on the AI wars currently consuming big tech. Everything is about to change beyond recognition, we keep being told, though no one can agree on whether that will be for good or ill.
This moment is just one of many skilfully captured in Wall Street Journal reporter Keach Hagey’s biography of Altman, who, like his company, was then virtually unknown outside of the industry. He is a confounding figure throughout the book, which charts his childhood, troubled family life, his first failed startup Loopt, his time running the startup incubator Y Combinator, and the founding of OpenAI.
Altman, short, slight, Jewish and gay, appears not to fit the typical mould of the tech bro. He is known for writing long, earnest essays about the future of humankind, and his reputation was as more of an arch-networker and money-raiser than an introverted coder in a hoodie.
OpenAI, too, was supposed to be different from other tech giants: it was set up as a not-for-profit, committed by its charter to work collaboratively to create AI for humanity’s benefit, and made its code publicly available. Altman would own no shares in it.
He could commit to this, as he said in interviews, because he was already rich – his net worth is said to be around $1.5bn (£1.13bn) – as a result of his previous investments. It was also made possible because of his hyper-connectedness: as Hagey tells it, Altman met his software engineer husband Oliver Mulherin in the hot tub of PayPal and Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel at 3am, when Altman, 29, was already a CEO, and Mulherin was a 21-year-old student.
Thiel was a significant mentor to Altman, but not nearly so central to the story of OpenAI as another notorious Silicon Valley figure – Elon Musk. The Tesla and SpaceX owner was an initial co-founder and major donor to the not-for-profit version of OpenAI, even supplying its office space in its early years.
That relationship has soured into mutual antipathy – Musk is both suing OpenAI and offering (somewhat insincerely) to buy it – as Altman radically altered the company’s course. First, its commitment to releasing code publicly was ditched. Then, struggling to raise funds, it launched a for-profit subsidiary. Soon, both its staff and board worried the vision of AI for humanity was being lost amid a rush to create widely used and lucrative products.
This leads to the book’s most dramatic sections, describing how OpenAI’s not-for-profit board attempted an audacious ousting of Altman as CEO, only for more than 700 of the company’s 770 engineers to threaten to resign if he was not reinstated. Within five days, Altman was back, more powerful than ever.
OpenAI has been toying with becoming a purely private company. And Altman turns out to be less of an anomaly in Silicon Valley than he once seemed. Like its other titans, he seems to be prepping for a potential doomsday scenario, with ranch land and remote properties. He is set to take stock in OpenAI after all. He even appears to share Peter Thiel’s supposed interest in the potential for transfusions of young blood to slow down ageing.
The Optimist serves to remind us that however unprecedented the consequences of AI models might be, the story of their development is a profoundly human one. Altman is the great enigma at its core, seemingly acting with the best of intentions, but also regularly accused of being a skilled and devious manipulator.
For students of the lives of big tech’s other founders, a puzzling question remains: in a world of 8 billion human beings, why do the stories of the people wreaking such huge change in our world end up sounding so eerily alike?

Man imagine if in MHA, the business course had a student with an OP quirk, and during the sports festival he said "yeah, I dont care for heroics, but winning this shit will look good for my CV when I'm a CEO of a corupt company" - perfect opportunity to explore the dychothomy between super powers and heroism - hell the charachter could then develop and realise that using his powers for less selfish reasons is better
And then just finish it with a double subversion, him not becoming a "super hero", but using his quirk in a unique but really necessary way, like idunno, give them heat control, to use for clean energy to solve both polution and lack of it or something, while using his business skils to manage corporate and goverment redtape and beauracry
Like even if one dislikes my example, its just a placeholder to express that, we really missed out for a social satire as quirks as a metaphor - cause everything had to be reduced to supercops...
This submission has given me ideas about how much better, with hindsight, My Hero Academia could have done more worldbuilding on how Business and Support Courses work, and give far more compelling stories and character progression to Mei Hatsume and Re-Destro.
I’ll get to the Re-Destro stuff below, as I have a lot to say. But I want to address something you wrote first:
And then just finish it with a double subversion, him not becoming a "super hero", but using his quirk in a unique but really necessary way, like idunno, give them heat control, to use for clean energy to solve both polution and lack of it or something, while using his business skils to manage corporate and goverment redtape and beauracry
I really wish we had shown more of the UA students using their skills for something other than superpowers. The final arc even had that opportunity: I know people are pissed Denki and others didn’t get some big flashy superhero fight, but the manga did a good job of showing that Denki, Momo, and others are also valuable for what they can do to alleviate resource problems we have in our real world, as well as the threat that persists that maybe we then are just dependent on the resources instead of letting go of them.
Think about Book 1 of The Legend of Korra: Mako can generate electricity, but that makes him a raw resource of power, hence keeping him in a lower economic class where it’s not just his labor as a raw product to trade for cash but his literal superpower and the way his body creates it is now separated from him and made into a product, like selling your blood and plasma.
There are so many opportunities to give this idealistic image you show of Pro Heroes figuring out that maybe they are more useful to create clean energy, and the dark side that maybe this perpetuates the same problems Pro Hero society has had for so long--but Horikoshi never tried to take this approach.
And yes, it would help navigate gray areas: “Maybe big business does do some good things,” “Maybe corporations can be used for good.”
Stan Lee helped co-create Iron Man in order to take the worst kind of person in that time period--a corporate leader creating weapons that were perpetuating a damn foolish war that never should have been started--to see whether the creative team could make a character that even young anti-war activists would sympathize with, cheer on, and see progress into a better person.
Horikoshi keeps doing this: there are so many cliches and notable moments in comic book history, and he just doesn’t tap into them to say something new. I am so not going to cheer on libertarian bullshit, but you can’t talk about comics if you’re not going to talk about Iron Man, the Question, Spider-Man, and Blue Beetle as objectivist Ayn Rand / Steve Ditko dream projects and how later creators have perpetuated, celebrated, agreed with, ironized, criticized, satirized, or condemned those characters and the politics they hold.
Okay, now onto my rambling. This is going to be another long response, so let’s again put up some headings to outline the answer better.
Let Mei Hatsume flirt with villainy
Your submission has big Mei Hatsume energy--and it’s not as if I haven’t toyed with the idea about whether Mei would become a villain, or an inadvertent one.
Granted, that idea seems a little too close to what they did with Entrapta in the She-Ra reboot--but if it worked there, it’d work here.
I’m kind of surprised the manga never said, “Oh, by the way, after the Pro Heroes failed to stop Shigaraki and ended up letting the PLF get stronger, some of Mei’s inventions got stolen by Villains and that’s why the Cider House Gang was able to get their hands on those Support Items.”
It felt like a missed opportunity to show how Mei’s work could be corrupted, it’d give her something more to do to the story, maybe give her an arc, maybe show other dimensions to her, how Power Loader or someone else gets her confidence back, reassures her it’s not her fault--and it’d pay off that potential villainy that she showed (but which we are definitely not actualizing here because she is a good person) way back in the Sports Festival by using Tenya as her glorified mannequin to show off her inventions, the kind of behavior you describe in your submission.
Make Re-Destro a UA alumnus and donor
Let’s go back to how you started this submission, about how the Business Course could end up giving rise to a potential corporate villain: yeah, it’s another missed opportunity.
I am going to go in another direction, to suggest, what if that potential corporate villain just flat-out did become a corporate villain.
If we are really going to have this many problems with this story, where everything has to be connected when really they should not have been (maybe Shigaraki should not have been Nana’s grandchild; maybe Geten should not be related to the Todorokis), why not just say:
“Screw it, Re-Destro went to UA in the Business Course”?
Horikoshi weirdly avoids taking the path of certain comic book cliches that could have been deconstructed or at least fun references: what is Lex Luthor if not the corrupt businessman who also happened to have gotten his start because he grew up with Clark Kent in Smallville? (Granted, I am mixing together the original origin story, Smallville, and John Byrne’s reboot…Sidebar: Fuck John Byrne, what a bigoted sack of shit.)
I know we have far too many of these characters having been alumni of UA: All Might (how did no one recognize All Might and Toshinori Yagi were the same person if he was in the UA Sports Festival?), Endeavor, Best Jeanist, Edgeshot, Midnight, Oboro, Present Mic, Aizawa.
But we never showed a Business Course graduate. Why not let it be Re-Destro?
It was so boring that All For One was scouting UA like a raccoon digging through his own personal dumpster in order to try to steal Aizawa’s Quirk and settle for Oboro’s corpse. And I hated how All For One just happened to have numerous moles, not just Aoyama but also all those other no-names in the final arc. All For One’s power (his literal superpowers, not just his political power) is so massive that it stretches believability, mostly because he has been set up as a villain so powerful that you can’t think of any way to defeat him--which is why the ending fails to actually give a satisfying way of stopping his physical might. He is a symbol of fascism, and defeating fascism, while requiring a ton of force, also depends on beating a bad idea with a much better idea--and it is difficult to boil down that fight of ideas to just two super-powered individuals punching each other.
All For One is not the person who would be able to infiltrate UA, and he is not a great option for storytelling and symbolism purposes to have him be the one to infiltrate UA.
But Re-Destro would be.
It’d make sense that Re-Destro would use UA to scout for new talent for the MLA. It’d be sadly realistic: corrupt corporate mogul funding schools to get the kind of lackeys and resources he needs for future conquest. It would fit with comic book cliches. It would finally let us do some worldbuilding as to how the Business Course, and likely also the Support Course, works, see more of the teachers, maybe some of them are with the MLA inside of UA, and maybe some of the teachers and students actually hate Re-Destro, whether because they know he’s corrupt, or they have an inkling, or (speaking as someone who has learned and taught in the university system) you just know the corporate funders are aiming those resources towards helping their business and could not care about improving education in languages, ethics, civics, and critical thinking skills.
As you said, “the character could then develop and realize that using his powers for less selfish reasons is better”: what if Re-Destro is that motivation for certain characters to realize that altruism would be better? A student gets brought into Re-Destro's orbit, doesn't know about the MLA yet, but works alongside him and slowly realizes something is wrong. Maybe this character learns about the MLA and helps inform Hawks; maybe this character never learns about the MLA but manages to extricate themselves away just in time, giving the audience a sigh of relief, and they instead get recruited for another business (to show "not all businesses are bad") or a Pro Hero agency (have Centipeder and Bubble Girl recruit them, give them something to do after Nighteye's death).
Or, what if it is a character we already know? What if Ochaco went to work for Re-Destro? What if Re-Destro’s fixation on wealth and advancement made Ochaco temper her desire for money, no matter how good her intentions are? Or, what if Re-Destro's vibe unsettles one of our more wealthy students like Shoto, Tenya, and Momo, and it shows us "not all rich people are bad"? I know this risks saying, “Don’t eat the rich, some of them are good people,” but it would keep asking the question Stain offered, when is there too much fame and wealth being given to glorified super-cops?
And this change to the story would serve Re-Destro better given how little presence he had after his defeat, and how empty he was as an antagonist once he just gives up to Shigaraki, and how little foreshadowing or build-up we had for him.
Re-Destro is to My Hero Academia what Fukuchi is to Bungo Stray Dogs: if this person is such a puppet master, then he should have been present in the background since Chapter 1--show us Detnerat products since Chapter 1, just as Bungo Stray Dogs should have shown movie posters, books, and military recruitment ads with Fukuchi since Chapter 1. Or, if Re-Destro and Fukuchi were such late additions to their stories, the anime adaptation should have fixed that. Granted, they didn’t have the same amount of time between first appearance of the character in the manga and first produced episode of the anime, but think how well this worked in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: “Here’s Father, yes we are introducing him early so that the Sins, the Ling stuff, the Alkahestry stuff, and the Xerxes stuff does not come off as such an ass-pull especially for those only familiar with the first anime, not the manga.”
I know this is very “me”: “Oh, you just want the story to be like this because you’re familiar with school politics!” Um, yeah? This manga has “academia” in the title--I’m a lifelong superhero fan, I enjoy poring over comics for how their stories and paneling are structured, but this series started so well because it took such well-worn genres, the superhero story and the school life manga story, and combined them to get something new, then fumbled the project by not getting back to the school stuff and using the superhero stuff to pull apart the school life story cliches and respond to the ongoing problems in education. I want a story that flat-out makes the donor to the big school into a bad guy--I want us to interrogate how much harm is done to education when the quality of the education depends on a handful of donors.
Make Re-Destro the arch enemy of Nezu
And this would also go a long way to give Nezu his own arch enemy. The story waits a long time before revealing, in trivia or in the text, that Nezu is rich and funds UA mostly on his own. Cool--but let’s show that Nezu still needs help from others, and maybe he is that big brain to know to keep his enemies closer, where he’s playing chess against Re-Destro, who is so ignorant that he thinks he’s the one pulling the fast one on, if we allow him to say this line, “some highfalutin lab rat.”
It’d be even funnier with the MLA having its rat symbol that it’s Nezu, so animalistic, being the one to screw over Re-Destro.
Think of how this would improve upon what, say, DuckTales 2017 tried to do and didn’t pull off as well: Scrooge is now a businessman in the 21st century, corporations no longer typically run on the whims of just one owner, there can be shareholders and managers and accountants like Bentley and his brothers getting in the way.
Same idea here: Nezu may be in charge of UA, but even he has to answer to the donors and, ahem, “customers”--if he screws up, he risks losing money. And when UA has villains robbing their paperwork, attacking students at USJ, attacking a student at the mall, and kidnapping and injuring more students, of course Re-Destro now can use this as a power play against Nezu. Come on, what is the point of having Re-Destro’s partner in crime be a politician like Trumpet if we’re going to chicken out and not get political about this story?

This may be a rather stupid question, but do you think Varg is capable of being honest to himself?
It's not a stupid question, but a thought-provoking one.
Theoretically, he could ONLY if he would let go of his false ego and look inside, but it's really not that easy.
You see, one of the most fundamental conditions of suffering from NPD is the inability to perceive who you truly are inside. Your identity is a blur. You think you know who you are and what you firmly stand for only to realize seconds later that you don't know anything, that what you identify with isn't you anymore or had never been you in the first place, and you search to actualize yourself again and again.
This deeply-rooted inability comes from a permanent failure in the 'separation & individuation' phase in which the mother allows the child to develop a personality, to become different from her. As you probably guessed, this happens in the early stage of development and it's mandatory for the child.
If a child doesn't separate and individuate from their mother, this will come to be the recipe for narcissism. This of course applies to Varg too.
So, a first problem would be his inability to find his true self because his false self serves as a barrier between him and the world. The false ego is a very skilful survival mechanism, it exists to assure you that 'nothing can touch you/ hurt you anymore'.
There are many types of narcissists out there. I see Varg as switching from overt to covert and vice-versa at convenient times. Naturally, he was more covert when he grew up, being more anxious and shy, but in time as he gathered popularity and made a name for himself, he rapidly turned overt (I would estimate this change around the time he met Øystein). He is also a cerebral narcissistic rather than a somatic one, so his focus is on 'seeming intelligent'.
Someone who is obsessed about seeming intelligent and controversial with his opinions will have a very hard time looking inwards simply because he doesn't believe there is something inadequate with them.
I think if he ever had any kind of reflection onto himself, this must've happened while he was in prison. Why? Because prison strips you of all of your entitlement and narcissistic supply. All criminals are treated equally in prison, no one is special anymore. The unfortunate thing that happens is that when narcs get out of prison, they return immediately to their old ways.
Another reason why it is so hard to be sincere with himself is that narcissists dissociate under stressful situations. It goes like this: they do something wrong and have to suffer consequences, but they can't take the blame because the false ego HAS to protect them, so they dissociate when having to deal with the aftermath and they soon forget what they've done wrong. And then they do it again and again, without ever realizing that they make the same mistake all the time. Call it 'convenient amnesia'. This is why they never learn, this is why Varg never learns. Repetition & compulsion also make narcissists extremely predictable.
If untreated, NPD worsens in time. We see Varg becoming more and more delusional from one day to another, making it (at this point) impossible to search for honesty in himself. I don't give him many chances when it comes to self-sincerity, but one thing is certain. He KNOWS he is miserable. Deep down, he knows he is unhappy and unsatisfied with his life, but he didn't know 'why'. He's unable to see the process of his flawed mentality. He cannot put a name to what is wrong, but he feels it, and I have no doubt about that.
He will always remain angry at himself for good reasons. He ruined his life and wasted his best years in prison while all of his peers grew and evolved. He will always remain angry and obsessed with Øystein, blaming him for his misfortune because he's unable to see the errors in himself.
To find the problem and recognize the source would mean literally ego death for him. This is why if he EVER looked into himself, he didn't do it for long because he couldn't stand the truth that he sabotaged himself.
It will always be much easier for cowards to blame the world around them for everything that went wrong in their lives instead of themselves for their own bold stupidity and grandiose ego.
Varg is too much of a coward to accept who he is.

5 Headcanons about Morticia Addams
I. Judging from the fact that in each adaptation of the Addams family story Morticia displays not only feminine manners but also skills in handling weapons, playing musical instruments, knowledge of classical literature, foreign languages, chemistry, physics and botany, she has received an excellent education in her time, and her demure demeanour and welcoming as mistress of the house all relatives without exception, even those who may not be the most desirable, suggest an upbringing that was typical of children in wealthy families who could afford it. Most likely, the Frump family sent both daughters to a boarding school, where the girls could not only learn various sciences, but also develop existing talents and skills. This only confirms that Morticia really could have studied at Nevermore… And that she wasn't so simple. After all, there was also Ophelia….
II. Morticia Addams is an excellent mother, very sensitive to the needs of her children, but also able to curb their very difficult characters. She has taken care to home-school her children before school, and both of them are probably ahead of their classmates in intellectual development: even the quiet Pugsley is a talented pyrotechnician, and this indicates an excellent knowledge of at least chemical processes and physics. Morticia willingly allows them to develop their skills and do things that bring pleasure, even if it threatens the integrity and safety of the house, but from time to time keeps a tight grip on them(and at the same time on her husband and others in the house) : probably thanks to this Wednesday and Pugsley have not yet nailed each other.
III. Morticia is a model of self-control. A woman so perfectly in command of her emotions could easily be a CIA agent, fooling all the polygraphs and giving out a half-dead heartbeat until Gomez says "cara mia". Whenever they have guests in the form of various relatives, she remains admirably unperturbed, as if she knew perfectly well of their intention to arrive, so that even if she wants to send them away with a kick in the arse, the guests do not even know about it and kiss the hands of the lady of the Addams' house. To think of what might really be lurking in the thoughts of this enchanting lady of spades…
IV. There could hardly be a better mistress of the house than she is: with a skilful management of available means, Morticia creates order and 'Addamsian' comfort in the house, keeping the household under her control so that the reigning matriarchy does not hurt Gomez in the slightest. He seems to love his clever wife and is happy to show this feeling always and everywhere: even after all these years his ardent Spanish nature is completely at the mercy of the black charm of Morticia Addams.
V. Morticia Addams is probably not fully human. It is true that often in answers to the question of what she is, we are assured that Morticia is perfectly ordinary, just that she has a peculiar way of life and a touching fondness for it through the cult of death. This may well be admitted, but can a lifestyle be an antidote to the deadly plants in her greenhouse or the far from healthy bites of the same spiders? And if we remember the approximate menu of meals in the Addams family (crocodile's feet, bilberry, eyes of newt), then there are involuntary suspicions whether these Addamses are so ordinary, and what kind of blood flows in their children. And even if we go back to the origins, 'Morticia' and 'Ophelia' are definitely not ordinary names. Of course, it could just be a tribute to mother Frump's taste… Or maybe there's a darker story behind it. Shall we investigate?

2024 in TV - My Top 10 Shows
Tumblr media
10. TWILIGHT OF THE GODS (Netflix)
Yeah, I know, first entry here’s probably gonna be a controversial choice – how could I pick THIS over so many far more worthy properties? Honestly, I just REALLY LIKED THIS, and this is my FAVOURITES for 2024, it ain’t a purely CRITICAL list, and I’m a person who LIKES a bit of trash occasionally, which this DEFINITELY is. But it’s REALLY GORGEOUS trash, and it’s FUN, so live with it. Seriously, even before Rebel Moon Zack Snyder was already considered one of the most shamelessly adolescent and pure sound-and-fury filmmakers out there, but given the sort of material he usually makes animation is actually the PERFECT art form for him – this is a medium in which it often PAYS to exaggerate things, to deliver glossy overblown action and stripped back archetypal storytelling and character development. Snyder’s THIRD collaboration with Netflix, therefore, is the perfect encapsulation of his entire aesthetic, but also deserves to be considered amongst his VERY BEST WORK, almost as good as early highlights like Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen. Besides, a full-blooded, ultraviolent and just plain SEXY reimagination of classic Norse mythology is the perfect project for him to work on, and he delivers in fine style here, aided in no small part by co-creators Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Ark, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas) and Eric Carrasco (Supergirl, Foundation), along with an extremely game vocal cast which includes Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049, See), Stuart Marten (Rebel Moon, Miss Scarlett & the Duke), Rahul Kohli (iZombie and most of Mike Flanagan’s TV series’), Jamie Clayton (Sense8, Hellraiser) and heavyweights like Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) and the mighty Peter Stormare, who bring the fascinating collection of jaded, indifferent gods and vengeful, rebellious vikings to vital life. Coupled with beautifully offbeat, highly stylised 2D animation (which carries strong hints of Cartoon Saloon throughout) and an intense and oppressive score from Hans Zimmer, this is a dark and seductive feast for the senses.

9. THE GENTLEMEN (Netflix)
Back in early 2020, Guy Ritchie was rightly lauded for his long-awaited return to London gangland-based cinema (a film which many considered to be a real return to form, even though I never thought he’d actually fallen off, and I know I wasn’t alone), and we were all enthusiastically onboard for a sequel, especially after this film’s much deserved critical AND commercial success. Then the Pandemic hit, and (for that and other, more unfathomable reasons) his career seemed to take something of a shocking (and entirely undeserved) nosedive … so the arrival of this spinoff series from Netflix in the New Year came as a much needed and very welcome surprise, and the final product definitely lived up to expectations without reservations. Theo James (the Divergent films) is our enjoyably complex “hero”, Eddie Horniman, a former soldier and the new Duke of Halstead who returns from a UN Peacekeeping mission to take over his late father’s estate only to find himself in a very tricky spot indeed when he discovers his inheritance comes with some very problematic strings attached because his father was keeping everything afloat by renting out his land as an expansive and lucrative cannabis factory for a particularly ruthless London drug firm headed by incarcerated kingpin Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone) and his Machiavellian daughter Susie (The Maze Runner and Skins’ Kaya Scodelario). Eddie’s attempts to find a way to wriggle out of this increasingly smothering obligation make for some enjoyably offbeat shenanigans, Ritchie’s eclectic sense of humour and deftly skilful balance of anarchic fun and casual violence making for a rewardingly edgy thrill ride. The cast is, as has become par for the course with this particular filmmaker, also uniformly on top form, with the ever-reliable James and Scodelario joined by the likes of Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Freddie Fox and the welcome return of one of Ritchie’s original good luck charms, Vinnie Jones, although the show is consistently stolen by Daniel Ings (Lovesick, The Crown) as Eddie’s black sheep elder brother Freddie, who got passed over in the line of succession for being a truly spectacular fuck-up. In the end, not only does this pay great respect to the original film it (sort of) follows, but it’s another perfect example of what Ritchie does best, and I’m very much looking forward to the already greenlit second season.

8. STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS (season 5, Paramount+)
I was a bit late to the party for this, having only actually gotten round to checking out Solar Opposites creator and Rick & Morty writerMike McMahan’s animated comedy series early this year, but I fell in love with it FAST, and it’s now become one of my very favourite shows in the ENTIREStar Trekroster (putting it into DIRECT competition with Strange New Worlds, in fact). This was always a show that’s been made with clear love and respect for the source material, which is, of course, how all the best lampoons work, and the final season maintains that high quality to bring the whole saga to a fittingly grand close. Jack Quaid’s OTHER best creation (alongside The Boys’ Hughie), neurotic super-nerd Brad Boimler, and Space Force’s Tawny Newsome’s unrepentant rebel Becket Mariner remain the core focus of the main cast, but my heart will always belong first and foremost to the endlessly effervescent bright spark that is Orion junior science officer D’Vana Tendi, still voiced with endearing charm by Master of None’s Noël Wells, and it’s nice to see her friend (and occasional foil), Gabrielle Ruiz’ new Vulcan officer T’Lyn, finally get promoted from guest star to main cast, too. Once again, this is filled to bursting with goofy, anarchic and perfectly pitched comedic twists on classic tropes, conventions and lore from across the entire gamut of the various series AND movies, once again throwing more brilliant cameos from old favourites into the mix (right down to a truly inspired Brent Spiner appearance), but there’s no denying that this is also one of the most consistently well-written and thoroughly INSPIRED shows in the entire canon, often putting far more high profile and expensive series to shame with the embarrassing WEALTH of creative talent displayed by everyone involved. It genuinely feels like the end of an era, and given that I’ve only just discovered this it feels like it’s over WAY too soon ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. 3 BODY PROBLEM (Netflix)
All right, first off I have NOT read the original novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin, so I have NO frame of reference regarding how faithful adaptation this actually IS, so I can only go off my own personal gut reaction to the quality of the material itself … but I REALLY LIKED THIS a whole lot. Then again, there’s a genuinely fascinating premise at its core – a group of bright young academics find themselves at the centre of a disturbing and potentially cataclysmic intergalactic conspiracy after a strange immersive video game revolving around a fiendishly difficult astronomical physics problem turns out to pertain to a VERY REAL approaching alien invasion … Game of Thrones’ co-”creators” David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are clearly looking to achieve career-based some retribution after said series’ frustrating final season, and for now it looks like they’re succeeding, teaming up with co-showrunner Alexander Woo (best known for his work on True Blood and The Terror) to craft a rewardingly labyrinthine slowburn suspense thriller bursting with intriguing ideas and well-rounded, exquisitely crafted characters. Of course, it helps that they’ve assembled a truly exceptional cast to make things so much easier, with Jovan Adepo (Fences, Overlord), Eiza Gonzalez, breakout star Jess Hong and, in particular, Alex Sharp (The Trial of the Chicago 7, How To Talk To Girls At Parties) all standing out alongside GOT alumni John Bradley and Liam Cunningham and heavyweight veterans like Benedict Wong and Jonathan Pryce. This is definitely one of the most singularly inventive and challenging series that Netflix has put out in some time, a fascinatingly immersive intellectual thrill ride that poses some really intriguing BIG QUESTIONS but stubbornly refuses to provide any REAL answers until late in the game in the best tradition of well-executed “mystery box” television … meanwhile the Panama Canal sequence is destined to go down as one of the most spine-chilling and nightmarish set-pieces I have EVER seen on the small screen. That scene ALONE makes this worthy of a place one this list ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. DELICIOUS IN DUNGEON (AKA Dungeon Meshi) (Netflix)
My latest favourite anime series is a very strange beast, genuinely one of the weirdest shows I’ve EVER come across, but very much in that wonderfully committed way that only anime can really pull off. Essentially it’s a culinary show, where obsessive attention is paid to EVERY ASPECT of a recipe before we get some genuine food porn payoff shots of the finished cuisine before watching the characters indulge in the resulting taste sensations. But it’s also a perfect lampoon of classic high fantasy action adventure tropes, taking wickedly accurate potshots at the likes of Dungeons & Dragons and its ilk that can ONLY be performed by someone who actually knows and LOVES the material they’re poking fun at. Then again, this is an almost RELIGIOUSLY faithful adaptation of an immensely popular manga series from fiendishly talented writer/artist Ryoko Kui (Terrarium In Drawer) which is regarded as one of the most unique and inventive titles out there right now … this is nothing less than PERFECT, a frequently HILARIOUS delight as we follow a motley crew of misfit adventurers on a dungeon crawl as they try to rescue one of their number from a fate worse than death, all while being forced to cook and eat the bodies of the various monstrous creatures they encounter along with way due to scarce supplies. The characters are all wonderfully original creations, each with deeply fascinating backstories and enjoyably complex personalities, particular co-leads Laios Touden (Damien Haas in the English dub, best known for his work on Fire Emblem and Like a Dragon), a hyper-focused super-nerd human warrior with a deeply ingrained obsession with monsters, and Marcille Donato (live action One Piece’s Emily Rudd), a high-strung neurotic elf mage who’s pretty much the absolute DEFINITION of girl-fail, although it made me SO HAPPY when later episodes saw the long-awaited arrival of fan favourite (and mine) Izutsumi (Fire Emblem and Goddess of Victory’sLaura Stahl), the prickly, picky and endearingly abrasive cursed catgirl that so brilliantly defies and challenges so many of the medium’s established conventions regarding this particular character trope. The results are one of the most addictive and genuinely “moreish” anime series I’ve ever come across – just what you want from a show so intrinsically focused on FOOD ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA (season 3, Amazon Prime)
Is it any wonder that, for the third year in a row, Amazon’s animated adaptation of Critical Role’s legendary (ahem) first Dungeons & Dragons campaign has made my list, and again scored SO HIGH? Really? Never mind that I’ve been a pretty rabid Critter myself ever since I first stumbled into the fandom during Campaign 2, this is a genuinely BRILLIANT piece of work in its own right, Matt Mercer and co continuing to pull off a pretty beautiful job of distilling hundreds of hours of in-depth live tabletop roleplay into another twelve 20-some minute episodes of compellingly dynamic television. So strap in for another exciting rollercoaster ride through the embattled high fantasy lands of Exandria as our much put-upon band of adventurers continue their seemingly hopeless battle to defeat the monstrous machinations of the evil dragon collective of the Chroma Conclave, taking in blossoming romance, crises in confidence, family drama and more than one major character death … once again this is a tour-de-force achievement for all involved, although the lion’s share of the praise once again MUST go to the hard-working animators at Titmouse for delivering everything they were asked for and SO MUCH MORE. This is about as good as fantasy television gets, effortlessly pulling off in less than 300 minutes what whole seasons of shows like The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power are really starting to struggle with in a whole lot more time (not you, House of the Dragon, you’re doing just fine darling). The main story arc may be over for now, but the scene’s nonetheless been seamlessly set for the next (and most devastating) chapter of the saga moving into season 4 (if you know you know), and I for one cannot wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. HAZBIN HOTEL (Amazon Prime)
God bless Vivienne Mededrano, she has one of the most exciting minds in television right now. Her anarchic, profane and wonderfully unique animated series Helluva Boss on YouTube has already been a balm to the soul (and the second, far more emotionally resonant season has proven to be a particular improvement on what was already SO GOOD), but her magnificent spinoff series for Amazon genuinely leaves it in the dust – this is solid 24 caret gold showrunning, she deserves all the awards she can get for this one. Taking the comedy musical concept of the already very impressive YouTube pilot and running with it, this spectacular refinement of a first season is a genuine MASTERPIECE, Medrano and co crafting an epic saga packed with expansive vision, powerful emotional resonance and a gleefully dark sense of humour. Erika Henningsen (the Mean Girls musical) is a blinding ray of sunshine as Lucifer’s effervescent daughter Charlie Morningstar, unshakeably chipper in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds in her mission to use her titular hotel to help cleanse the souls of her supposedly irredeemable patrons, while Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s own Rosa Diaz) provides loving support as her far more cynical girlfriend Vaggie, and the cast is rounded out by a spectacular collection of top drawer vocal talent that includes serious Broadway talent like Alex Brightman (the School of Rock and Beetlejuice musicals), Christian Borle (Spamalot and the Legally Blonde musical), Jeremy Jordan (Supergirl() and Krystina Alabado (American Idiot and Mean Girls) alongside the silky tones of the legendary Keith David, but the show is roundly stolen by breakout star Blake Roman as the sassy and acerbic spidery pornstar Angel Dust. The musical numbers are truly legendary, easily the equal of anything we’ve seen in any of the big shows, the comedy never fails to hit and the animation is genuinely beautiful even when it’s at its weirdest, but the thing that this show has above anything else is true HEART, hitting us right in the feels as much as the funny bone. I am genuinely IN LOVE with this series, and I’m waiting with bated breath along with the rest of the fandom for the already greenlit next THREE SEASONS ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. SHŌGUN (FX)
One of the first serious, grown-up TV series I ever remember getting into when I was a kid was the 1980 miniseries adaptation of James Clavell’s sprawling historical epic novel, which told the story of John Blackthorne, an English navigator in the early 17th Century who finds himself shipwrecked on the mysterious islands of Japan and becomes a pawn in the deadly battle of wills between squabbling political factions within the samurai nobility vying for control of the nation after the death of the emperor. I loved the old show so much that I read the book, loved it even more, and subsequently read it a bunch of times since, so I was REALLY EXCITED when I found out that FX were pulling out all the stops to give it a lavish new long-form treatment. And then, within the first ten minutes of the opening episode, I knew this was something TRULY SPECIAL … this is a VERY JAPANESE series, not just because of the setting and subject matter but also because, while the focus IS on a Western character, the vast majority of the cast is Japanese and ultimately very little of the dialogue is actually in English (subtitle haters beware, there’s A LOT of reading involved in truly enjoying this show). Then again, being a proper Japanophile I absolutely LOVED IT. Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth, Calm With Horses) does make for a suitably robust and eloquent leading man, giving Blackthorne just the right balance of fish-out-of-water exasperation and wily precociousness, but the true heart of this series lies with the double threat of Anna Sawai (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) as glacial Christian interpreter Lady Mariko and living legend Hiroyuki Sanada, who effortlessly steals every scene he’s in with mesmerising subtlety as the powerful and ambitious Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who realises this intriguing young sailor is a potentially powerful tool in his plan to ascend to the titular position as supreme political master of all Japan. This is one of the most sumptuous and masterful historical epics I have EVER SEEN made for television, co-creators Rachel Kondo and her husband Justin Marks having seemingly come out of nowhere to create one of the greatest long-form series I’ve seen not only this past year but quite possibly for this decade so far! The dialogue is incredibly rich and endlessly quotable, the narrative immersive and rewardingly twisted, and the production and costume design, seamless effects work and action sequences are never anything less than FLAWLESS. It’s gone on to perform a CLEAN SWEEP at various primetime awards and RIGHTLY SO, this is a genuine MASTERPIECE, and FX definitely saw sense in taking what was originally intended to be a standalone miniseries and expand it into at least two more seasons moving forward. I can’t wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. FALLOUT (Amazon Prime)
Now I’ll admit, not being a gamer I’ve mostly gotten to know the Fallout games through osmosis (mainly on here), but I definitely saw the potential in adapting it for television. The fact that it was Westworld co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy doing it just convinced me that it was guaranteed to be GOOD … and by the gods was I ever RIGHT in that estimation. This really has turned out to be Ella Purnell’s year (as well as Sweetpea she’s also returned to a particular star-making series we’ll talk about more later), the promising young Brit actress landing another well-deserved breakout lead turn as Lucy MacLean, a naïve young Vault Dweller forced to undertake a dangerous quest in the irradiated wasteland of post World War III California in order to rescue her abducted father Hank (Kyle McLachlan). Lucy’s massive culture clash as a literally sheltered youth raised in a nuclear bunker having to survive in a world where EVERYTHING is out to kill her in the worst ways imaginable makes for a suitably compelling central driving force for the series, while Aaron Moten (Disjointed) provides a similarly involving tangential narrative focus as Maximus, a squire for the militant Brotherhood of Steel who essentially STUMBLES into becoming a mech-armoured Knight as his own accidental hero’s quest brings him into Lucy’s orbit … the TRUE core of this series, however, is Walton Goggins as the Ghoul, an unapologetically amoral bounty hunter whose own dark past holds the key to the far greater overarching mystery at the heart of the whole story (not to mention that he consistently steals EVERY SINGLE SCENE that he’s in). Amazon have pulled out ALL THE STOPS to make this the very best viewing experience it can be, and every single penny of its impressive budget is right there on the screen, the worldbuilding really is some of the most impressive I’ve ever seen while the set-pieces are just as robust and enjoyably NASTY as you’d expect from an adaptation of such a subversively FUN video game. It’s also got a pretty jet black sense of humour, Nolan and Joy clearly appreciating the opportunity to do something a whole lot more irreverent after spending years on a property as serious as Westworld, although this does still pluck at the heartstrings with due skill when needed and definitely poses some VERY deep and pretty disturbing questions about war and capitalism and how often the two are inextricably tangled together. The end result is definitely the best live-action series we got in 2024 (sorry, Shogun), and I look forward to the second season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. ARCANE (season 2, Netflix)
Seriously, are any of you even surprised? I ADORED the first season of this series, despite the fact that I’m no more familiar with League of Legends than I am with Fallout I really have resonated with the property and I just LOVED what Riot and Fortiche put together in those simply PERFECT nine episodes, so I was so excited to see what they were going to do with what was intended to be the closer to this first story within their larger creative universe. Thankfully they have (essentially) pulled it off with similar skill, dropping another nine episode season that EASILY lives up to the example set by its predecessor while offering a suitably satisfactory payoff, as well as breaking ground for whatever they plan on when they move forward with new stories in promised follow-up Runeterra-based series. Sure, it’s not QUITE as perfect, there are parts of the narrative that feel a little truncated in places in the rush to reach a suitable climax, but what flaws there are ultimately prove insubstantial enough that they really don’t detract at all from our enjoyment of the work as a whole. It’s certainly hugely enjoyable getting to see everybody get their own well deserved rewards (or comeuppance), while also seeing some of our most beloved old faces (and some similarly brilliant new ones too) meet heartbreaking but nonetheless poetically powerful ends that are definitely given their due chance to have a real impact. Much like the first season it’s best to just go in good and cold, so spoilers are definitely best avoided … suffice to say this is JUST as gorgeous as what came before, Fortiche again producing a truly cinematic work of art that leaves anything else we’ve seen in animation this year choking in their dust, while the exquisite complimentary mixture of visuals and a magnificently opulent soundtrack once again provides suitable sensory joy throughout. In the end this is just as well-written, well-designed, well-performed, well-directed and just downright WELL-EXECUTED as the debut that won all the awards and much-deserved critical acclaim back in 2021, and it’s been a genuine privilege getting to see it all unfold. I’m just hoping they don’t leave us waiting ANOTHER three interminably long years for whatever they give us next ...

Sweet Tooth (season 3, Netflix), Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Crunchyroll), Sweetpea (Sky Atlantic), The Penguin (Max), Invincible (season 2, Amazon Prime), The Edge of Sleep (Amazon Prime), The Brothers Sun (Netflix), Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix), Helluva Boss (season 2, YouTube), What We Do In the Shadows (season 6, FX)

Links Roundup
Welcome to another edition of links roundup. This week, Ariel’s been reading and thinking about the following articles, none of which are explicitly solarpunk, but all of which relate to the way solarpunks choose to interact with the world and their communities.
Experts Agree: Sugar Might Be as Addictive as Cocaine
This comparison has been floating around for a while, but reading a properly-cited article about it is a bit of a trip. The language is fairly cautious around sugar’s addictive properties, which is par for the course with scientific studies, but I can tell you that my brain has certainly rearranged itself to accept sugar as the only acceptable reward despite harmful consequences. Hopefully this awareness means less added sugar to our daily foods going forward, although that’s hard to control unless you have the luxury of time/space to make your own foods on the regular.
Karl Marx and Frederick Engels’ Manifesto of the Communist Party and its genesis, published by the Marxists Internet Archive
Cheating a bit here because I’m not all the way through it and maybe showing my hand a bit that I haven’t fully read the Communist Manifesto, but I’ve had one too many Marxist bros tell me, in the course of grad school, that it will like, change my life and how I look at things. You know how you tend to avoid something because it’s too popular and too many people recommend it to you? Or is that just me? Either way, this edition really helps set the Manifesto in its context and has some very insightful commentary. (I still don’t agree that class is the fundamental oppression on which all others are predicated and you cannot make me see it that way, DAVE).
How Good, Kind, Caring People Became The Bad Guys
I highly enjoy the articles from OkDoomer, although it’s pretty explicitly the opposite of solarpunk. Jessica Wildfire is an incredibly compelling writer, and imo this article recasts Sara Ahmed’s theory of the feminist killjoy in a skilful, contemporary way that applies to how we are living our lives post-pandemic. Food for thought.
Dairy worker with bird flu never developed respiratory symptoms, only pinkeye
This is a fun article to read and spiral off of. Gonna warn those with anxiety now, please have the group chat or whatever mental health supports you need open before reading through this one, because you might be hyperventilating afterwards. It’s always a good time to experiment with veganism, and now more than ever, at least get yourself off of cow products and byproducts, for everyone’s sakes.
Pluralistic: Tabs give me superpowers (25 Jan 2024)
Cory Doctorow is so productive it’s bananas - this blog post of his has some insight into how he manages to maintain that, the bullshit that is “life hacking”, and some very useful information.

When Carl Weathers auditioned for the role of Apollo Creed, the prizefighter who gives an untried contender a shot at his heavyweight title in Rocky (1976), he was asked to read opposite the film’s writer. “Now – I’m ignorant – and as I finish reading, I say, ‘Well, wait a minute, if you can get me a real actor to read with, I can do this a lot better.’”
Unbeknown to him, his scene partner was the newcomer Sylvester Stallone, who had not only written the script but was playing the title role. “Somehow I got the job,” said Weathers.
A 6ft 2in former NFL linebacker, Weathers, who has died aged 76, brought the full force of his charisma to a role that could in less skilful hands have prompted straightforward hisses and boos. There was a depth and kindness to him that no amount of on-screen braggadocio could conceal. He spoke, said one LA Times reporter, with the “overly concise diction of a TV evangelist”.
To prepare for the role of Apollo, Weathers watched old Muhammad Ali fights for inspiration. Shot for peanuts, the film grossed $225m, won three Oscars, including best picture, and spawned four sequels. A further three films in the spin-off Creed cycle featured Michael B Jordan as Apollo’s son Adonis.
Weathers was taken aback by the instant fame that Rocky brought him. The day after the film opened, he said, “I was out for a walk in Manhattan and street vendors are yelling, ‘Yo, Apollo.’ That is scary. You are not prepared for that.”
He reprised his role in the first three Rocky sequels. Rocky II (1979) begins immediately after the events of the original film, with both fighters in wheelchairs, coming face-to-swollen-face with one another in the hospital.
“Get up out of that chair, chump, and let’s finish this fight right now!” Apollo demands, having won only on a split decision after 15 rounds. Later, there is a moment of tenderness when Rocky, bandaged and slurring, wheels himself to Apollo’s hospital room late at night, nudges open his door, and asks whether Apollo really gave the match his all.
Though they decide initially against a rematch, Apollo becomes incensed by the hate mail he receives branding the fight a fake. Rocky II ends with the opponents bloodied on the canvas. Struggling to his feet, Rocky is declared the winner.
In Rocky III (1982), Apollo trains Rocky against a vicious new opponent, Clubber Lang (Mr T). The old adversaries get back in the ring at the end of that film for a friendly sparring match, the outcome of which remained a secret until Rocky revealed to Adonis in Creed (2015) that Apollo had clinched it. In Rocky IV (1985), Apollo is brutally trounced in a bout with the Russian boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). He dies in Rocky’s arms.
Weathers found many of the subsequent roles he was offered to be “pointless and meaningless”. But he enjoyed squaring off against another of that decade’s action heroes – Arnold Schwarzenegger – in the fantasy thriller Predator (1987).
In their first scene together, the men greet each other with a handshake that develops into an impromptu arm-wrestling contest. It is won by Schwarzenegger, his bicep bulging monstrously in close-up – a clear case of the more famous actor literally flexing his celebrity muscle.
Weathers later meets a sticky end during an encounter in the jungle with a shape-shifting alien. He loses an arm – his finger is still firing the trigger of his automatic weapon even as the limb falls to the ground – before expiring with a blood-curdling scream.
During his down-time on Predator, the actor developed with the film’s producer Joel Silver a lead role for himself as a Detroit detective in his own shoot-’em-up adventure, Action Jackson (1988), though a hoped-for franchise never materialised.
He acquitted himself well in the Adam Sandler golfing comedy Happy Gilmore (1996) as a pro golfer whose hand is bitten off by an alligator; in one scene, he sits at a grand piano on a golf course playing We’ve Only Just Begun. He reprised the role in Sandler’s Little Nicky (2000) but was even funnier as a tight-fisted, cost-cutting version of himself in four episodes of the sitcom Arrested Development between 2004 and 2013.
Weathers was born in New Orleans, the eldest son of a labourer father. He won a sports scholarship to St Augustine high school, then attended Long Beach Poly high school and Long Beach City College. He made it to San Diego State University on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in theatre.
His professional football career began in 1970 with a single season with the Oakland Raiders. After being dismissed for being “too sensitive”, he played for two years with the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League. “How good was I? I was good enough to make it … But I was never dedicated enough. I was never in love with football.” Acting, he said, was “a lot more fun, and I ache a lot less.”
He retired from football in 1974 and won supporting roles in television series such as The Six Million Dollar Man (1975) and Starsky and Hutch (1976), and with Pam Grier in the blaxploitation thrillers Bucktown and Friday Foster (both 1975).
After Rocky, he starred with Burt Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson in the football comedy Semi-Tough (1977); with Robert Shaw and Harrison Ford in the Guns of Navarone sequel Force 10 from Navarone (1978); and alongside Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin in the thriller Death Hunt (1981). He also wrote and performed the 1981 soul single You Ought to Be With Me.
Television work was plentiful, though attempts to fashion a long-running TV vehicle for him were hit-and-miss. In Fortune Dane (1986), he played a political troubleshooter battling white-collar crime; the show lasted six episodes. Its producer Barney Rosenzweig called Weathers “one of the more intelligent people I’ve ever been in business with. But he’s a physical animal. He’s gorgeous … The guy looks like a Greek god.”
He was a regular on Street Justice (1991-93), In the Heat of the Night (1993-95), inspired by the 1967 Sidney Poitier film of the same name, and Chicago Justice (2017).
Weathers also provided the voice of Combat Carl in Toy Story 4 (2019) and played the bounty hunter Greef Karga in the Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian (2019-23).
Weathers’ three marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by two sons, Jason and Matthew, from his first marriage, to Mary Ann Castle in 1973.

for the ask game:
Poppy/Imelda (i know you ship this, OBVS, i just want to hear you yap about them 🥺)
Evelyn/Poppy (because i am a self-indulgent bitch and want to hear your external thoughts 👀)
Imelda/Adelaide (absolute wildcard, i know its become MY brainrot but would love to know what you think! 💭)
anyway, love you and your thoughts J ❤️❤️❤️
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [link to the ask game]
I have received an ask about Imelda x Poppy few weeks ago!! It here: >>> Imelda x Poppy ask. I don't really know what to add to it. ._.
Evelyn/Poppy
Ship it
| 1. What made you ship it?
I generally love all Poppy x f!MC ships, but I was specifically drawn to Evelyn x Poppy because 1) yapping and leaping about them was very fun to read, it built a dynamic of expectations I could have about the two AND MEMES OF COURSE I love memes and screenies and all these little cutesy things about them; 2) I absolutely adore Kiss Me (Like You Wanna Be Loved) and its universe (and the way it is written; I keep this fic as a syntax guide of sorts hee hee); 3) Evelyn is her very own character, I'm interested in her lore.
| 2. What are your favourite things about the ship?
They're so awkwardly, sillilly, adoringly in love 🥺🤧 About ships like this one we say over there, 'I'm invested in their relationships more than in any in my own life' lmao
| 3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i don't think i have
Imelda/Adelaide
I respect the ship and enjoy the fics and arts very much but…
Don’t Ship It
| 1. Why don’t you ship it?
Their dynamic is fabulous. I can imagine Adelaide being a good emotional support to Imelda as Adelaide is very much ready to undertake tasks like caring for her uncle in his retirement, and manage finances and the silver mines in the future as well. She has a good balance of silly and emotional matureness, besides, Adelaide is an orphan; her parents died. It kinda implies that Imelda would also have financial support if her career path wouldn't be an easy take off, but in return Imelda can offer a supportive family of Quidditch nerds who might as well give Adelaide pointers in business (or finance; if Imelda's family have a fortune, it means they most likely have invested in property or land; Oakes' silver mines could fall to their interest, too).
But…
It just doesn't click for me. I don't really have an answer to it. Might it be due to Adelaide's recklessness of a non-competitive kind? Imelda being potentially too brash/blunt to Adelaide's liking?
Something's missing for me here. Imelda ships I'm into are all having an element of a constant surprise for Imelda e.g. Julia is naturally abrasive and grim but skilful and fluctuant to give Imelda roller coaster rides whenever Imelda feels like she has learnt Julia; e.g.2. Poppy is literally an embodiment of innocence in Imelda's eyes until Poppy loredrops something about poachers, beasts, forensics, some rare magick, etc, leaving Imelda gob-to-the-ground surprised.
| 2. What would have made you like it?
I think, logically, that element of surprise. A well-hidden sharp edge to Adelaide personality perhaps? When she's older and lived through a fair share of negotiations and land deals, developed a no-nonsense attitude, but of that subtle shade you only perceive after said something too silly or too ridiculous in her presence one too many times; that same attitude that for a loved means I See What You Did Here Aren't You The Naughty One Eh.
| 3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
They are very, very soft together ^ ^
